Good to see Toshiba continuing it's aggressive player marketing. This should sell even more players.

Toshiba must be losing a fair amount of money on these deals.

Any idea if this is good for online purchases or just B&M? I'm getting tempted at these levels...

But wait, there's more (TM). More marketing news but ineresting nontheless.

I can say that's an almost definate no.

The rebate will be available across a wide range of retailers, including Best Buy, Circuit City, HHGregg, Amazon.com and many others.

I noticed the $299 HD-A2 deal starts May 20th... The Matrix Trilogy is released May 22nd
Coincidence? I think not :) Perhaps this deal will be plugged with The Matrix displayed on a HD Display in Best Buy, Circuit City, Fry's, etc :D

Think of how easily this can be marketed and sold
"On May 20 for a period of two weeks the HD-A2 HD DVD player will be $299"
"Two days later The Matrix will be available as a HD DVD exclusive"

Now the HD DVD promotion group is following Warner Bros. lead with in cinema trailers of HD DVD.

If this proves to be true, I will not be buying at MSRP -$100 rebate. :(

But the biggest accomplishment here is that the Toshiba HD-A2 will be priced @ $299 in Best Buy, Circuit City, Fry's, etc.

Average people who don't spend alot of time on the net looking for the best prices will be in Best Buy or Circuit City and they will see a $299 HD DVD player sitting next to the $799 Samsung Blu-Ray Player, next to the $999 Sony Blu-Ray player. The people who are interested in High Definition movie players who own a HDTV but have stayed out of the format war will see the least expensive standalone High Definition movie player ever. This is a golden opportunity for HD DVD to make a hard push forward.

Wow, this will definitely be a huge push for HD DVD into the mainstream market. Looks like they definitely have plans on catching up to the number of Blu-ray 'players' sold. :D

300 bucks plus 5 free movies makes this a better deal than the 360 add on even if you own a 360.. not bad at all.

Edit: unless you have a 1080p set and use VGA.. then I guess it isnt. But for us component 720p users!

MichaelHDDVD
05-16-07, 01:38 PM
Wait a Minute... $100 off. So what about Costco?? I've seen them selling the HD-A2 for $349, does that mean the HD-A2 with the $100 off deal can be purchased from Costco for $249!!!!!!

omg if that is true then I could pick up two HD DVD players for less $$$ than a single Blu-Ray player

05-16-07, 01:51 PM
Woohoo, amazon qualifies!

That means we *could* see it for $220 if prices hold steady... if that's the case, I'll be buying a 2nd one for our 1080P Westinghouse in the bedroom!

I know HHGregg has, in the past, had the player for $299, I am not sure if that will happen again during this promotion (probably not), but that would bring the player to a crazy $199 price.

Not really...because if they spot the PS3 (blu-ray player) or the new panasonic player then it would be not much of a stretch....

"Panasonic said it is now shipping an upgraded version of its Blu-ray Disc player — model DMP-BD10A – at a reduced $599 suggested retail...""To support the player Panasonic will bundle five Blu-ray Disc titles with the DMP-BD10A. These include Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest,” “Transporter,” Fox’s “Fantastic 4” and Lionsgate’s “Crash.”

although admittedly a good price, it's still $299 vs $599.

The PS3 isn't sitting next to the HD DVD and Blu-Ray standalones. The new Panasonic isn't going to be released until after this promotion is over when Toshiba has moved tens of thousands of HD DVD players.

Which doesn't matter relative to this promotional push by the HD DVD promotion group because the Panasonic isn't going to be released until after the $100 off promotion is over.

If anything the inexpensive A2/A20 offers and the inexpensive Panasonic will push people towards being dual format owners

$300 Toshiba + $500 Panasonic < or = $799 Samsung, $999 Sony

I'm waiting for Robert from VE to make a peep about if he's authorized to make the $100 price cut from his deals. I would rather support Robert than Amazon any day (unless of course we can get the A2 on Amazon for $100 bucks less than him in which percentages do talk).

I got a PM from Robert at VE. He said they ARE part of this promotion and to expect a deal from them. They are still working out the details but feel it will be a better deal than the B&M stores.

He said to stay tuned for the details. He didn't say when.

January of last year (2006) was prior to the April 2006 release of HD DVD so I’m willing to bet that you meant to say January of this year.

Still, I feel your pain; I’m still waiting for Warner to send me my free Peewee Herman DVD from 1998.
