I have a Magnavox 51MP6200D/37 CRT rear projection that I got a good deal on, the specs. are:
Progressive Scan
Auto Picture
Black stretch
Color transient improvement
3D Combfilter
Contrast Plus
Luminance Transient Improver
1080i at 60Hz.
Ask if you need to know something different, I cant post a link to all the specs. yet… under five posts…lol.
My question is if I were to connect a PS3 via a HDMI cable would it be better to allow the TV to scale the incoming signal or should I go into the PS3 and set the max resolution there?
Thanks for the help, Justin
Compare it both ways and see which you prefer.

The PS3 doesn't do much scaling right now. If your TV doesn't accept 720p input you may end up with many games downscaled to 480p.

Ok, for me to ask the next question I need to know if I have this straight. As far as quality goes I thought it went 480i, 480p, 720p,1080i, then 1080p.
From what I have been reading most CRT projection TVs that are HD are 480p and 1080i. So with that being said the TV should upscale the lower quality’s right? i.e. 480i to 480p, 720p to 1080i. I don’t understand why it would downscale when it has room to upscale…
Now if everything I said is wrong, what can I do to fix it to get the highest definition possible? Or better yet, does the 1.8 update for the ps3 fix/help this problem?

yep that should do it. now everything displayed on your tv should be at the tv's maximum resolution as long as your ps3 setting are correct after the update. the ps3 will detect the max resolution of your tv. now all your games ps2,ps3, dvd's and blu ray will be @1080i except burn dvd's which i think has a limit of 720p because of some copy protection stuff. anyway you should be all set once you get the settings adjusted in the ps3 settings menu. good luck and enjoy

Be careful, for copy protection reasons the PS3 won't upscale production DVDs unless you use an HDMI connection. Any DVDs with your own personal stuff (home movies, etc.) will be upscaled over any connection.
However, if you are using an HDMI connection, 1.8 now seems to scale everything properly and does a very good job of it.

Thats great news, It will be connected via HDMI so all is well there.
Just for my general knowledge was I right that resolutions go in this order: (from least to greatest) 480i, 480p, 720p,1080i, then 1080p.
Thanks
