my fiancee's parents just called and told me that their SONY plasma TV just shut off all of a sudden after a loud POP. They turned it back on and the screen becomes black, and then slowly begins to go away, gradually showing the picture...however the picture looks like the negatives of 35 mm film. Anybody know what happened?

Anybody know what happened?Planned obsolescence. It's probably a video board and not worth fixing, if parts are even available. Time to buy a modern plasma from a good company ;)

And what would a "good company' mean and which one would you suggest?

The correct answer is "It depends."

Sorry, couldn't help myself. :) Looks like you've been around here a while, so you probably know the drill. We'll need more info on what you are looking for, seating distance, budget, etc.

I was asking which company would be considered a "good" one, not which set. But you are correct. BTW, I grew up right across the river from you in Plaquemine.

Oh I see, I thought you were asking who was a good company and which tv would be suggested.

Anyways, top tier plasmas if I can think of them all (others can add to this):
Runco
Fujitsu
B&O
Pioneer
Panasonic
Samsung
and maybe a few others

Good 'ole Plaquemine...so you are a native Louisianian...Geaux Tigers!
