Are all HDMI cables created equal?
I need to buy an HDMI cable to hook up my new panasonic dvd recorder to my HDTV LCD flat panel. There are large differences in price.
Anyone aware of any good/bad on GE, Sony, Philips, etc. HDMI cables?
Thanks

A forum favorite are cables from the forum sponsor monoprice.com. Many of us here have purchased from them and have been satisfied with both the cost and the quality. You do not need to pay a ton of money for good cables. The majority of cables out there I would consider equal, except of course in cost.

Another vote for monoprice.com. Great stuff at fair prices.

One vote for Blue Jeans cable, a forum sponsor.
I have (2) HDMI's, (2) component BNC, and a component/RGB from them.

All great quality.

Monoprice for the win ...

I was actually shocked at the build quality, and even the packaging.

Very impressive, hard to believe they are so inexpensive.

No where else to shop for me

I bought an HDMI, toslink, Cat6 network, and a 50 foot (!) SVGA cable w/ audio. Outstanding product and prices.

According to this article, ALL HDMI cables are currently made in China, so unless some seller tolerates low quality standards, all HDMI cables should perform more or less the same as long as they adhere to the HDMI cable standards, especially with regards to impedance.

Monoprice is good.

Does anyone actually read that site? Man, don't even ask about the round listening room, I often think they mean to spread misinformation as a joke.

The common standard is for up to 100 meters or 300 feet for gigabit on copper. 10 gigabit on copper is rated for 50 feet. In 6 years time even more data will get packed into cheap twisted pair copper and the distance will lengthen. HDMI has an absolute cake walk with fancy specailty products in quite homes compared to what data centers and telco's do with the same basic technology.

I have bought 7 HDMI cables, 2 toslink optical cables, 1 HDMI switcher, 1 optical switcher from MONOPRICE and couldn't be happier with their price and quality.

Yeah, I know. After seeing those prices, I bought from monoprice for less than 10 bucks & they work great

Monoprice is good, I have used them myself. But they are not the only source of quality HDMI cables at low prices. These guys are an excellent choice also:

in all honesty, Monoprice still offers better value than Mycablemart.

Why is there an overwhelming majority of monoprice buyers as opposed to BlueJeans Cable? Does BJCable do something wrong?

Probably because their cheapest component cable is about $45.00 and the monoprice cable is less than half that. :)

True, but they are not a forum sponsor. ;)

Unlike component cables, HDMI passes a "digital" signal, which either is "there" or it isn't.
ANLOGIES:

Just like a blank CD or DVD, as long as the cheaper blank "works" fine, the sound/video quality of the burned recording would be identical to using a blank costing 4x as much. - same w/ HDMI cables, if they "work" , there shouldn't be any difference with another more expensive cable.

Component cables, however, can be analogized to blank analog cassette or VHS tapes, where you may notice a difference in more expensive brands ....

that's because BJ cables are considerably more expensive than Monoprice.

Okay, here's a very very basic question... Is there such a thing as an "HDMI 1.3 Cable", or are all HDMI cables capable of HDMI 1.3? It was my understanding that the cables are all capable of HDMI 1.3, it's just the components that they're plugged into that are either 1.1, 1.2, or 1.3. Is that right?

I don't want to spend more than necessary just because some company brands their cable as "HDMI 1.3", kind of like antenna companies brand their same old antennas as "HD antenna" and double the price.

EDIT: To clarify, I'm not talking about any forum sponsors with my above comments.

Alright went to the site and found $5 and $18 HDMI cable with the difference being the cheaper was a ferrite cores. The more expensive was 24AWG vice 28AWG. Is the price difference simply the gauge and does that matter on a 6" cable?

swifty7

no it doesn't, you can comfortably go for the 24awg.

Lots of people here like BJ's ( I know I do as well ) but everything I have gotten from Monoprice has been top notch quality and just plain works.

Monoprice is popular with the "I need a cable that works" crowd, people who don't care if the wire or connectors carry any branding. If a non-branded unit does what it is supposed to and meets all the needs a user has, why not save money?
