View Full Version : In the market for low-end 50" 768P plasma - Philips Outlet?

Hey guys. I'm generally a projector guy and don't know about plasma tech. I'm about to do an install for my parents and I've seen some very cheap ($1k-ish) Philips plasmas from the philips outlet website that sort of fluctuate in price.

What's the warranty? Page doesn't say anything which makes me a little nervous... and also, for a mid-50s not very discriminating couple, I know the resolution will be good enough (15-18' viewing distance so the res is fine).

Other similarly fantastic values I should be aware of? Shipping to Washington State, not sure if sales tax will be an issue or not.

Thanks!

If you love the price, fine. Myself, even though I love my Philips plasma I would NOT recommend buying a refurm or from the outlet store for my 1st or primary HDTV.

Why not check out a 9631 price-matched by Sears?

I don't know the specifics of the 9631 price-match deal from Sears, but I presume it means sales tax, so it's already taking a hit in the bargain department. You seem to be a Philips fan (as am I after good luck with SD dvd/divx players and a CRT) so I wonder why you recommend against hte outlet store/refurb path. Had bad experiences, or heard of bad experiences from here? Bad warranty? This is the info I need to finalize a decision.

Thanks!

Because even though I am a huge Philips fan, I try and be objective and fair...lots of the people here who got 'bad' Philips models either (1) bought a refurb, especially of an older/dated model or (2) bought the models especially produced for big-box retailers, like Costco's 9431.

For a few hundred bucks more, why not have peace-of-mind, reliable quality, and extra features (e.g., Ambilight) in a model that's been battle tested ??

You know, aside from maybe Panasonic and maybe Pioneer, there are more threads and pages on Philips models and virtually all of the users are quite happy with their TV's.

I'm not sure what your game is.

I see why you are confused. You haven't been paying attention. Read the philips threads closely. You spend most of your time trying to pacify unlucky Philips owners. :p

Yeah, right....why don't you back up that nonsense with some proof. You spend more time bashing Philips -- and maybe other models -- than I do doing whatever pacifying you accuse me of. Why don't you just cheerlead for the models you like -- why do you goto threads to bash others? You don't see me bashing Panasonic or Pioneer or even LG or Samsung or Maxent or Vizio.

Most of the Philips users are very happy -- as are MOST of the plasma purchasers here -- and the overall problems are related to the higher plasma fail-rate in general.

I'm not bashing without reason, I own the product. I've experienced the pain. I wish somone would have warned me before I purchased! Instead of running around blowing sunshine up my a$$. Look at Consumer Reports or almost any website like Amazon.com that has customer feedback on purchases. Philips plasmas fail at an unacceptably high rate!

CR has glowing reviews on many Philips models.

Amazon has glowing reviews on the 9631.

But why go there? I can stay here at AVS Forum and read glowing reviews on Philips....and right below this thread I can read problem threads on Pioneer, Samsung, Panasonic, and other models. According to you, those threads are a figment of my imagination.

What model Philips do you have anyway? Dollars-to-donuts it's not a 9630 or later model.
