Can anyone help tell how i am to audition sub's when the speakers i have selected are not present? Do i only listen to the sub with known material (CD or DVD) . I am am open for selecting a sub and my budget range is $600-$800. My Speakers will be DefTech 350's/main, pro2000/center and BP1.2/rears, since my sub will be placed behind my TV (60" Sony) (WIFE MANDATED)appearance is not important. i have read about the SVS cylinder type and would try this out after i hear more about them, but as i said I'm still very open to suggestings.

The only way to get a good evaluation of a sub is to listen to it in your own room.
Anything else is just a taste. The room is just as big as a component as the rest of your equipment, so it really doesn't matter what you do in the store, because it's going to sound completely different in your house.
IF this is a serious dealer, than I would request that they bring their offerings to their house, or let you borrow a sub for a weekend for a refundable deposit. My local dealer does that. The one thing about the cylinders is that they only cost about $25-$30 to ship depending on where you live, so if you don't like it, it won't cost you that much to return it.
Have you shown your wife some of the smaller subs like the SVS SB12+, or ACI Titan XL, or Axiom EP500?
The Piano black of the SB12 or Titan XL would look beautiful next to those Def Techs.
