Hey guys, I just got a Samsung 4254 and I want to hook up my laptop to it. I'm wondering which option of the two above will give me the best PQ. I want to play movies off of my laptop if that matters.
I'm assuming that it's SVGA to RGB, but I'd like some confirmation or a smackdown for being silly :D
Thanks to all who participate in these forums, I have learned a TON.
SVGA refers to a type of cable and the resolution it carries and the connection it uses is a 15-pin D-sub port. RGB is a type of component video signal used in the video electronics industry. It consists of three signals—red, green and blue—carried on three separate cables/pins. Extra cables are sometimes needed to carry synchronizing signals.
So please clarify your question.
The Sammy uses the 15-pin D-sub port for PC input which typically is connected via SVGA cable. Does your laptop have the port listed as RGB? If so is it 15-pin like the Sammy? If so, use a SVGA cable to connect both. You can get a SVGA cable with Stereo plug integrated from the forum sponsor monoprice.com. This will handle video and audio from your PC to your tv.

My laptop(Dell D820) has SVGA out, not RGB. I saw that I could buy either cable, and I just wanted to see if I should use one cable over the other. By your response it sounds like using VGA out of the laptop to VGA(PC) in on the TV is the best way to do this. My concern was that the audio wouldn't be carried and I'm not sure what type of audio in is beside the VGA input.
SVGA cables themselves do not carry audio, that's why I suggested a cable like this from monoprice: http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10201&cs_id=1020106&p_id=560&seq=1&format=2&style=. They sell different lengths too if needed. It has a stereo plug run alongside the SVGA cable. The Sammy has a PC audio input I believe, but you'll need to check and see whether your laptop has an audio out that will work with a stereo plug. Pg 14 of your Sammy manual talks about the PC connection.

Yup, use the SVGA connection.
Try using the short distance possible. Long and crappy built quality VGA cable = Poor data transmission.
As for the audio, you might as well go get a nice pair of speakers or speakers w/ receiver so you can run the audio from your laptop to the sound system. Most TV builtin speakers put out ghey sound....
FYI the one I linked is 50' long and works great. May be this confirms the quality from Monoprice.

I can sit the laptop about 3 ft from the input, so that's about perfect.
I don't have a receiver setup yet, so I was hoping to run everything through the TV until I 'move on up' :)
