Hello,

I currently have a HD HomeRun with which I record Unencrypted QAM HD channels (just local from Comcast Denver) to my pc. I also have a DVHS. My question is, if I were to rent an HD box with firewire out from Comcast:

1) Would I be able to record channels other than local HD via firewire to my DVHS, or
2) Is everything that is Encrypted QAM also 5C protected, so I wouldn't be able to record it from the cable box?

1. You would be able to record anything you're entitled to view by your package.
2. You can only record the channels you're entitled to view by your package.

A DVHS will record 5C channels without any problem.

Hey guys- thanks for the responses. I didn't phrase my question very well. I understand the technical limitations of recording encrypted QAM and 5c content.

My question really is do cable companies generally set a 5c flag on any content that would normally be encrypted QAM? i.e. if it is encrypted and I can't record it via HDHomeRun, it would also be 5c'd to something that I wouldn't be able to record via DVHS? I am trying to determine if I would actually be able to record channels like ESPN-HD (that are encrypted QAM on my system) to DVHS if I rented the cable box, or would it still be un-recordable on DVHS due to the 5c setting?

Thanks again.

No, they "can" and "have" in the past set copy-once flags on OTA re-broadcasts which *should* always be copy-free.
