View Full Version : Which of these would be best for gaming?
azurepiano 05-21-07, 03:53 PM I need help deciding which HDTV would be best for gaming... i'm looking to spend around 2k at the most, but am willing to maybe go a little bit higher if needed.
There's a few tvs i've looked into and I don't know which to go with.
Sony KDS-50A2000-
Looks pretty good, and I think it's my main pick so far... but last I remember, rear-projection TVs had really dim screens, is this one really that bright and is the picture that good?
Another rear-projection:
Sony KDF-50E2000:
Would the picture of a rear-projection LCD compare with that of a wall-mounted one like this-
Sony 40" BRAVIA XBR LCD Flat Panel HDTV with Built-In ATSC Tuner KDL-40XBR2
It seems i've been gravitating towards sony, i've even considered their XBR960/970 CRTs, but i've decided that the weight might be too much and I might end up wanting a bigger screen later... of course, anything would be a HUGE upgrade from my SD-27 inch TV.
Sony KDS-50A2000
Sony KDF-50E2000
Sony KDL-40XBR2
Which would you pick?
Any help is GREATLY appreciated.
(seems I can't post the URLs yet, i'm sure you guys are experts on exactly what these are anyway!)
none. If your really into sony look for the 50 A2020.
I had a 50A2000- but with the notorious green blob.
Bravia LCD still has way to much ghosting for me.
50E2000 is a nice TV, just not my preference - Im not a fan of Rear Projection LCD's . Blacks arent up to par.
If your looking for a good Rearprojection look for the new Sony SXRD's coming out this year or a Samsung HLT DLP (LED).
I bought the Samsung just because i didnt want to wait for the new SXRD's and the A2000 had to much SSE for my liking
azurepiano 05-21-07, 04:25 PM So out of those the 50E2000 seems the best for gaming eh?
I'll keep that in mind. I guess i'm not just limited to rear-projection, anything around the 2K mark that you guys think is best for gaming will do as well... it's just that rear-projection is the initial direction I seem to have taken.
If you have other TVs in mind I have no problem with you posting about them so I can check em out... I have no experience with HDTVs so i'm relying on anyone who is willing to help.
Also, do you know when the new SONY SXRDs are coming out?
Thanks again.
azurepiano 05-21-07, 04:38 PM So I was looking at the Samsung HL-T5087S over at cnet...
Looks amazing, and the (few) reviews are really positive.
I think this is the TV i'm getting. Nearly brand new right?
So I won't have to regret it until next year, instead of a few months. :)
I know this may be rather noobish (and I guarantee I am a huge noob to this), just one thing I don't understand is the difference between the LED models and the older ones... does it replace the bulbs found in rear-projection TVs?
eddy_winds 05-21-07, 04:43 PM Toshiba 65H82
works for me
A oldie but goodie
:)
azurepiano 05-22-07, 06:30 PM I'm pretty set on the samsung now... anything else I should know before I carry this out, any other recommendations?
Speak now, or forever hold your peace.
:)
Good choice. DLPs are great for gaming.
Bretskii 05-23-07, 12:08 AM Just bought a 50 inch Sony SXRD, xxx2020. Simply amazing picture.
Yup samsungs great man, ive been using it for xbox 360 and hd dvd (a20) and both just have beautiful pq. the thing is the samsung has so many options you can get any picture type you want. Its too much if you ask me:P I can never decide.
but yah some people are like SONY lovers or Samsung lovers and wont be anything else, which is why i was listing the sony possiblity, buy if your open minded, you cant go wrong with the HLT.
azurepiano 05-24-07, 04:09 PM Sounds great btdvox.
I'll be ordering the samsung sometime in the coming weeks, just one last question: how's the brightness?
Jay_Davis 05-25-07, 11:04 AM Well, just to warn you, you can go wrong with the Samsung. Not that it's a bad TV, probably the best DLP out there, but any DLP with a color wheel will be subject to rainbows. If you can see rainbows and they bother you, it is a bad choice.
Having said that, the the Sony LcoS (SXRD) models and the Samsung are much better for gaming than any of the LCDs, flat or rear projection.
snyder007 05-25-07, 11:47 AM I have the HLT-4675S use everything from a NES to the 360 its awesome.

The Samsung LED DLP's are made so that rainbows are eliminated as there is NO color wheel.
Check the LED owners thread for more info.

I never really looked too hard at the LED DLPs at Best Buy, their setup was dim and green tinted. But I do recall seeing a rainbow from it, so it can still happen, but greatly reduced over a normal color wheel.
Also, while on the subject, I swear I see some kind of rainbow effect from a couple of CRT rear projections at Circuit City. And Plamsas I see some yellow after image now and then when deep blacks are around.
azurepiano 07-05-07, 07:21 PM Well, I finally got the HL-T5087S about a week ago and so far it's great!
I have my Wii and Xbox360 hooked up to it and gears of war looks excellent on the TV... I haven't really messed around with the settings either and i'm pretty new to this HDTV stuff.
I was wondering, does anybody know of a good calibration guide for this type of TV?
Many thanks.

AVIA and DVE are the most popular calibration DVDs (both are available at amazon.com). No 2 displays and no 2 viewing rooms are the same, so I highly recommend a calibration DVD to properly adjust your settings, unless you will get it professionally calibrated.
azurepiano 07-06-07, 12:45 PM Hmmm, sure that well work well with a 2007 model HDTV?
AVIA (http://www.amazon.com/o/ASIN/630551982X******s9_asin_title_2-1966_g1/104-8051538-3493537?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=195287Z2JD6XWZG8WT8F&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=278240301&pf_rd_i=507846)
It released in 1999...

I have had every version of Video Essentials from the first laserdisc up to the current HD-DVD DVE. All are nightmarish to navigate. Even the newest one is geared primarily toward crt type displays.
I also own AVIA and prefer it to any version of DVE. Much easier to navigate, more understandable tutorial along with the basic test patterns, has a color decoder evaluation pattern that DVE lacks.
DVE is great if you already know what you're doing and just need test patterns. If you're not very experienced with using the picture controls on your set AVIA is a much better choice.
andross77 07-06-07, 02:10 PM Azurepiano, can you comment on the brightness and the tv overall at this point? I'm in a similar situation. I'm looking at 50"-60" dlp tv mainly for movies and tv but possibly gaming. I'm only really considering the samsung models (bulb and LED type), sxrd's, and the mitsu's. My top pick right now is the Samsung bulb ones b/c when i saw the LED's in a B&M store the other day they were significantly dimmer than the bulb ones right next to 'em. I'm also hesitating b/c the River in South America seems to be dropping the price slowly every 2 days so i want to hold out as long as i can. I found a great deal from ******* but i think it was a hoax. Anyways, further impressions on your new Samsung HL-T5087s would be appreciated. Did you get an extended warranty?
