Some of you may have seen some of my posts to far, regarding certain questions I have had during the planning process of this whole HT build. From curtains for sound absorption to rack design I have finally reached a point where I can take those blind faith leaps foreward into construction.

First, my inspiration (I recommend everyone find an HT picture somewhere that they can use for inspiration.) Here is mine:
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/HometheaterfrominternetthatIlike.jpg

Second, the space I have to work with
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/Basementbefore2.jpg
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/Basementbefore1.jpg

Next, what I have planned:
Here is the schematic drawing I have come up with (to scale 1ft = 1 block)
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/Scheme.jpg

Check out my 3D rendered walk-through ** CLICK HERE** (http://s184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/?action=view&current=FinalBasement.flv)

I am planning a center raised ceiling cut out that you can see on this walkthrough ** CLICK HERE** (http://s184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/?action=view&current=Ceilingemail.flv)

Here are some stills from the walkthrough:

http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/3232Soundreflection.jpg

The rack will go under the stairs. I used Rack Tools (http://www.racktools.com/) to come up with this
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/RackScheme.jpg

The wet bar in back I want to be similar to this:
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/wetbar.jpg

I have been planning the cable runs as of late and here is what I have (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=82213&stc=1)

INPUT PLEASE!! IS THERE ANYTHING I HAVE FORGOTTEN, ANYTHING I NEED TO TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION, ANYTHING I SHOULD DO DIFFERENTLY?

Stay tuned...

I think it's going to look great. I love the use of wood everywhere in the inspirational picture. Are you sure you want to use that couch though? That won't fit that many people very comfortably for a long duration.

That wood is great isn't it. I am going to do that on the pilars along the sides, but not all of the walls like he did.

The couch is a problem right now. You think I should go with theater seating instead? I am looking for seating that is a little more intimate than separates though.

As for the wet bar. I am going to have to have it plumbed in...

Intimate as in facing each other for conversation, or intimate as in snuggling up together and watching a movie? You can get theater seats in loveseat/couch configurations that allow for snuggling. You could also throw some spillover chairs in there that swivel for conversation if that is you intent.

Intimate as in snuggling up together and watching a movie. Thats why I was thinking of using a small sectional. Something like this maybe:

What do you think?

It all depends on whether you are making a media room with other purposes or a dedicated theater room. I think the sectional couch is a terrible idea in a theater room. At the very least have your couches, if you are using couches, all facing the screen.

I agree, sectional is a bad idea in theater, but I do intend to make this more of a 'media' room where you can hang out. Will be a lot of Xbox going on as well PC,Wii, poker, drinking, partying, passing out, waking up and partying some more...

Its just that I dont want a stuffy, row type theater seating that dictates everybody shut up, face foreward and watch the move like some fascist scene from 1984.

I like the spinning chair idea. I think I will try to find some space for that... front right?

JJ, I don't know how new that house is, it looks brand new. You may want to make sure you live through a really heavy rainstorm to be sure it stays nice and dry before hiding the exterior walls behind insulation and drywall.

I'm actually kind of surprised that there isn't any insulation on those walls already? Or did you take it down to paint the walls? usually code requires a certain amount on any new construction.

Um...its an unfinished basement. That big window is one of these Egress Windows. (http://www.egresswindows.net/index_files/code.html) Walls? I assume you mean the ceiling supports because the walls are just concrete.? Where we are in Michigan there is no code that says you need batting in ceiling for basement. Maybe I am misunderstanding what you are talking about.

frank456
05-25-07, 07:30 PM
The insulation he is talking about would be installed on the side foundation walls. Code applies in 'every' state.

Mr.Tim
05-25-07, 07:59 PM
There's prescriptive code and then there's design-based code.

If you have a home builder that is building the same house again and again (or a custom home), there are tradeoffs that can be designed to meet the energy code. Larger overhangs, low-e glass, high efficiency furnaces. Plug them all into REScheck. It's it passes, you're good to go. Of course, you need a licensed professional to do so. The rest of us just look at the book and it says "use R19 here, R30 there, and R11 there".

Or the insulation could be on the outside of the foundation.

Or the inspector could have done a drive-by inspection.

Who knows.

Tim

Actually my house is built the same here in MI. I know in my case all I have outside of my basement walls is the waterproofing system. No insulation on the outside and none on the inside until you frame the walls. JJ you will probably have your basement done before me based on the rate I am going:)

jjcritch
05-28-07, 07:24 PM
I don't really get the code thing. But I know that I looked at 6 'new build' houses while shopping for this one, all of which had unfinished basements, and none of them had any insulation on the walls. All were just bare concrete.

Anyway, doesn't matter... I went back to MI this last weekend to get things ready to start moving. I assembled my Middle Atlantic rack while there. Stay tuned for pics!!!

jjcritch
05-29-07, 10:10 PM
Well, here is the rack assembly...

Again, I have some inspiration for my vision of the rack mount under the stairs. Of course I like max lomax's rack, as stated above. I have also taken it a step further.

I like the way this rack is flush with the wall and thus the wallpaper actually can go over the front rails creating a very clean look. Now, I probably wont do it this way, but I do want to do something similar:
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/29645RackFinal.jpg

There is one problem, but I will get to that later.

First, I am installing two Middle Atlantic Slim 5 (part# 5-21) racks. They are 40 inches tall and will be about 40 inches across after they are ganged together. I am not using the cable chase like they show on the Middle Atlantic web site. (http://www.performanceaudio.com/cgi/product_view.cgi?products_id=1951) They will just be ganged together directly.

Here is how they arrived to me:
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/IMG_0789.jpg

One of them open:
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/IMG_0792.jpg

The nuts and bolts:
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/IMG_0794.jpg

One is done:
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/IMG_0795.jpg

Both of them together. In front of where they will be roughed in soon:
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/IMG_0803.jpg

Here is closer to where it will ulitimately go:
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/IMG_0809.jpg

And hopefully look like this (except it will be more like 24 inches off the ground:
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/RackDimensions-1.jpg

Found this in the gallery, mine should look similar:

jjcritch
05-29-07, 10:11 PM
So, that is the fun part...Now to my problem.
I want to mount the side rails flush with the drywall once it is in, so that I have the option to do the wallpaper thing or at least maybe something similar. The issue is that the top and bottom of the Slim 5 have face plates that stick out about a half an inch from the rail:
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/IMG_0815.jpg
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/IMG_0814.jpg

No big deal except if it is mounted how I want, the top and bottom plates allow you to see behind them and see the bushings for the screws. Looks bad.

What I think I might do is remove the top and bottom decorative plates and just leave whats underneath exposed. Then its flush. Its not too bad:
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/IMG_0821.jpg
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/IMG_0827.jpg

Well, I have been doing some work on the design for the little touches of the basement such as cannister lighting, ceiling, wet bar and electrical placement.

Here are the results of my efforts:
This shows where the switch banks will be - where the Grafik Eyes will go
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/switches.jpg
Right now, 1 switch for front 2 canisters closest to screen wall
1 for next four canisters back, 1 for standard canisters over wet bar(2) and the canister in front of closet to right of stairs. 1 for all 6 sconces on columns. 1 for front track 8 feet back from front wall up in left side of cieling recess. 1 for back track 21 feet back from front wall also on left side up in cieling recess. So far, that is 6 switches in media room

Here is a good shot showing the new ceiling dimensions and cannister lighting. There are 6 canisters in HT. Sconces will go on pilars. Notice the ceiling is now off set as to minimize symmetery.
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/lesscannisters2.jpg
Here are the cannisters I am going to use (4 inch):
http://www.homedepot.com/catalog/productImage/a0c9d124-7b7e-4210-9898-b3ff31f5a094_400.jpg
Notice how the bulb is really far recessed into fixture for great focus.

I have been thinking about bass traps lately. My question is, if I filled my front pilars with sand would they have much function as bass traps?

I have been designing the wet bar lately as well. I think I want to do a 'Scotch bar' type design. I just need to make sure I keep on top of the clanking from all the glass.
Tentatively settled on 7 feet from side wall. Will come out about 5 feet from back wall. Side wall side to have the ice maker on it. Front side to have refrigerator on right end of front.
Here are some pictures:

http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/bar2.jpg
Light underneath
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/bar3.jpg

Going to have a fan in equipment room under the stairs tied into a vent leading to outside the house. I want to keep the area air tight so that what the fan is on, air comes in throught the front of the rack. Anybody seen special fans for this application, rather than just using a bathroom fan? I was wondering if anyone made a fan with a digital output so my PC could show RPM, Temp, Thermostat setting and whatever else the fan contains.

jjcritch
07-08-07, 01:11 PM
Well, finally I am not trying to do everything from Chicago. I am here now in Southeast Michigan, and its go time...

The high and low voltage stuff is run as is the ELK M1G (http://www.elkproducts.com/products/m1/elk-m1.htm) security system wires.

Here are some pics:
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/IMG_1383.jpg

http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/IMG_1376.jpg

http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/IMG_1375.jpg

Here is a pic of the equipment room.
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/IMG_1377.jpg
The wires are of course not organized yet. One issue that I am concerned about is that I have just found out by building code, the inside of the equipment room has to be drywalled, that is if there is going to be a door on it. I am wondering if I can get around this by leaving it open and just hanging a door after inspection.

What I am worried about is having drywall limit my ability to retro run wires later and add on to the ELK M1's automation.

Here are some closeups of the vent fan that will be in the equipment room. I want to hook the switch up to a thermostat. I need to search for a good small fan home automation type switch. Something I can run into my PC so I can get fan stats over the network.
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/IMG_1378.jpg

http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/IMG_1380.jpg

You can see, above the fan is the outlet for my conduit to the projector.
Here is a shot of the ceiling in the theater where the conduit runs from. The projector (most likely an Optoma HD81) will mount 16ft back; for a 16:9 diagonal screen size of about 110".

Last pic today is a shot of the rear of the room. Up in the back wall of the raised cieling area you can see the rear speaker outlets. I think I am only going to do a 6.1 rather than 7.1 set up so I will just use the one on the right side of the pic since that is almost perfect with the geometric center of the room.

You are really flying and things are looking great.

As for the screen geometry issue. Over in the thread talking about the New Infocus 1080P projector there was considerable discussion of this topic. A number of installation PRO's said "don't worry" you just tip the to of the screen in to correct for the keystone issues.

An interesting point is that it makes the screen actually look squarer from a seated position.

It's worth the read. For what it's worth I have an Optoma H79 and while the projector has been relatively problem free in the 26 months that I have had it, it burns up bulbs at the rate of $1 hr of viewing.

I want to upgrade but the feedback on the 81 has been pretty brutal.

May want to consider the JVC , wait to see about the Infocus, or any thing else that hit's the market later this year.

Don't forget, when you add your components and shelves, they too will stick out (not quite as far as the top and bottom, but almost). I would mount the top and bottom flush or slightly recessed if I were you. It worked great for me.

The projector is just my old Infocus SP5000 - 720p. As soon as I can start putting more money into this project, I will get a pj, speakers, sub, power conditioner, another HTPC with touchscreen as the home automation server, and maybe a UPS...

As for the faceplates. Its all middle atlantic stuff. Ordered them all from performanceaudio.com. It is the RSH line of face plate/shelves. You just list the model number of what component you. Check out this thread:

They do indeed look as good in person. The color, sheen and detail are really amazing!

Do you plan on putting any sort of black border around your screen?

When I was first planning the screen, I was not sure if I was going to need a black velvet border or not. Since it is done and I have been watching content on it from my Infocus, I have found that I don't really need one. It may make it look sharper when the lights are on and it may also give me some freedom from having to use the 'overscan' function on the PJ, but as for now I don't have one planned.

I have also been considering a molding border for the rack, but I think it looks pretty clean as it is.

Notice the old projcetor still, with the component cable draped accross the room. The new Epson Pro Cinema 1080p UB is on the way! BTW great deal going on right now if you buy it here through AVScience.com

But here is my pride and joy!:

I give you The Rack
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/IMG_2646.jpg
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/IMG_2650.jpg

Yep there it is. In all its glory. I have added the Silverstone 7" touch screen PC case which will house the home automation server running ElkRM and possibly the HomeSeer Vista MCE plug-in.

At the bottom you will see the APC H15. This is a great power conditioner. The best there is in its class. I have gotten a 30' shielded powercord and run it through the conduit to the projector on the ceiling so the new Epson can be run off the conditioner. With the projector and everything in the rack except the PC's powered by the APC, it is still only at 11% load!

You will notice I have also mounted the 19" Samsung LCD in front of the lower right part of the rack using a Sanus mount. It worked out perfect. I also added a Middle Atlantic pull-out drawer for the keyboard and mouse. Its comming along nicely. But I still have some room... maybe a PS3...?

Stay tuned. Wait until you see what is going on the wall here:

That is indeed what has been creeping into my brain for the last few days. I think I am going to break down and do a riser with some Berklines for a back row. I also want to build a sand filled stage, once I pull the trigger on the Sunfire Signature sub.

Home automation. Got a lot of help from the guy who runs accessha.com (http://www.accessha.com/)

Also wired in one of Insteons relay switches to run the fan in the equipment room. I plan on hooking up a temperature probe and then setting a rule to turn on the fan when temp reaches x.
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/IMG_2799.jpg
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/IMG_2801.jpg

Using Powerhome (http://www.power-home.com/screenshots.asp), everything will be run through my ELK M1G
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/IMG_2795.jpg

You can see here, the ELK front end called ELKRM running on the touch screen home automation PC

Here it is running on my regular PC
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/Desktop.jpg

The next big thing I want to do in the Automation set up is surveillance cameras. One triggered by the front door bell and one in the baby's room.

Next thing to do in the home theater is the ceiling, I think.
Oh yea, and cable managment.

Yes, they can be controlled by IR or they offer an RF remote. The Insteon KeypadLinc runs $69.99 and the SwitchLinc runs $45.99. They communicate over the power line, unlike the GrafikEye, which is hardwired.

If you are pre-construction and can afford a GrafikEye, it's an excellent solution for lighting control.

Well, I got my new projector Last Tuesdayand WOW! This is a really impressive projector. This Epson Pro Cinema 1080p UB is really something.

First of all, my convergence is great. Almost spot on, but there is quite a bit of refraction of green (or the fancy term 'Chromatic Abberation'). I can tell this because there is a uniform green hue of about .5 - 1 pixel amsot all the way around a white box test pattern. I would not say it is anymore than the lenses that have been on any of my past projectors.

AS for fan noise, as others have said - In high lamp it's audible but not a big deal.

Iris noise, I don't hear it.

Brightness, definitely not a problem. Lost of room to work with here. You want deep contrast, run it on a low setting. If you are gaming and need to see opponents lurking in the shadows or have ambient light, run it on a bright mode. This is the most impressive aspect of the projector to me.

Shadow detail. This is the most important thing to me. I have had too many past projecors that crushed blacks... finally my holy grail comes in the form of the UB.

On with the pictures for those who are interested:

Thanks for pointing me to your thread. It looks like the rack is maybe my best bet and I like the trim. Did you do any research on where the best place to purchase was and is there any difference in the racks? I am a bit concerned that if I decide to put in my Pass Labs amp the rack will be small. The Pass Labs amp is about 20" wide and and 25" deep. I have not decided but I may not like it on the floor because I have a 8 year old that will be able to use the room. I notice you have a girl, does she help with hammering everything?

Yep, she does indeed help daddy whenever she can, for better or for worse.

As for your amp, a standard rack is 19" so you are going to have an issue. If you use a short Slim 5 like I did, you can mount it off the ground and build a separate shelf underneath for the amp. Probably would look real nice.

I have gotten all my Middle Atlantic stuff from PerformanceAudio.com but you should check here http://www.avscience.com/products.htm . Mark or one of the guys can help you out.

I just bought a Middle Atlantic Rack, it is 48" tall, and I think it is a SLIM 5, but I haven't seen one that height before.

Anyways, I currently have shelving built in to my wall that I will be removing. Fortunately, my cut out is almost EXACTLY right for the MA rack!

My question for you is this.... When I cut my drywall, I never did do anything to "finish" it. In other words, since I cut the hole, there was no taping or texture or anything over the unfinished edges of the drywall.

Is that something that you dealt with, or were your edges taped and mudded?

Thanks!

Your room is awesome! Love that Yoda poster! I know you said you got it from ebay, do they make any other posters like that? Do you remember the seller's name? Was thinking about doing something similar but if I can find a place that does them that would be great!

I got it on ebay but they no longer have auctions there. You have to go to their website: http://www.icanvasart.com/

This style is called Giclee. They have 8 piece ones like mine as well as 3 piece.

I have spent soo much time over the last year just searching and reading avs, finally signed up for an account.

JJ, you sir are the inspiration for my ht. It's simple.

I was skeptical at first when i read about rackmounting a screen, but then realized how close all the controls and everything is from the main seating position. Kudos to you.

Thank you. I am glad to hear someone else enjoys my HT as much as I do.

BTW, here is a more up-to-date picture of the rack with the PS3 and Uverse box in it:

JJ, you're at the point where I've been pondering about for myself.

That ISY by UD, did you have a chance to play around with that? if so, how was it? I write code for a living, and was looking for something like that to control everything. *(I think i've got OCD issues when it comes to planning, since ill probably put in as much time planning the system as I will installing and fiddling with it.)

Do you just have the insteon in the basement? or have you started to replace everything above with them too?

I have insteon throughout the house and really like it. I have an ELK M1G home security system and was struggling with how to set up the lighting scenes and integration with the automation. I got the ISY and it has been the key, I love it. It makes everything that has to do with the lighting and insteon control a breeze. The options in terms of some of the rules could be expanded a bit more but otherwise its great.

One note though. Since I have gotten my Uverse, I cannot get to the ISY from outside my network. I can get to the ELK but the ISY does not support the Uverse 2wire router.

Here are some new pictures. Sorry it has taken so long, but I just finally installed an addition that is worth posting.

Its a 110" Vutec Silverstar. I am extremely happy with it so far.

Here I just uncrated it and layed it up against my S-I-L-V-E-R painted wall:
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/IMG_4354.jpg

With an image projected to it, you can see the difference:
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/IMG_4352.jpg

It comes fully assembled in a 185 lbs. wood crate. The screen itself is 120 lbs. Here it is laying face down on the carpet:
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/IMG_4355.jpg

And finally on the wall:

before I took it down and turned the bottom brackets the right way...

Oh, OK. Looking forward to your impressions of it. Still not available here just puts the brakes on it for me. Just makes me wonder too much. I am at a loss to figure out why and none of the reasons I can think of make me feel very good. Hope you have success with it.

It has finally arrived...

If you have been following the thread, you know I ordered an H5360BD from Germany in early-mid June. It took 13 business days to get from the online retailer's warehouse in Germany to my doorstep. I ordered it on June 13th for 644.11 Euros.

http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/IMG_2395.jpg

I came in a box that was pretty beat up (as expected if something is comming from Germany.) The box however was still intact. It was packaged with paper surrounding the retail box of the pj.

http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/IMG_2397.jpg

The retail box came with mostly English on it but some German. Inside was a composite video cord, a VGA 15-pin cable and three powercables (none of which fit my power outlets here in Michigan) as well as the projector of course.

http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/IMG_2399.jpg

I immediately pulled it out of the box and fired it up to make sure it was not damaged in shipping.

http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/IMG_2400.jpg

I first hooked it up to my PC and ran through the Nvidia 3D set up wizard. This is when I realized you can only use this projector with an Nvidia card using the 3DTV Play software (I though I would have a choice as to whether I wanted to use the Nvidia IR glasses or DLP link glasses.) As soon as the video card detects the pj it pops into the 3DTV play mode and runs DLP link from then on. (Note: you do have to have an Nvidia emitter plugged into the USB for the 3DTV play software to be activated.) The good thing is, you don't have to pay for the software, apparently a license for 3DTV Play is included with the emitter.

I then tested it with the Playstation 3. As soon as I hooked up the projector and powered up the PS3, it detected a 3D capable display and ran through a quick set-up. I fired up my copy of Wipe-Out (I downloaded free because Sony felt bad for releasing my data across the vast tundra of the internet) turned on the 3D and palyed a few races.

http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/IMG_2401.jpg

I then hooked it up to the Xbox and threw in some Black Ops to test that 3D. Had to tweek the pj settings to manual SBS (side-by-side) but was fragging in no time.

http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/IMG_2402.jpg

I did end up going with the UltraClear glasses. And all in all I would have to say this projector performed flawlessly. I had no problems with the 3DTV Play software the DLP link glasses and the PC, PS3 or Xbox. All worked great. The pj menus by default were already set to English and picture quality is great.

Now all I have to do is wait for my 3D blu-ray discs from Netflix to test on the PS3 and I'll be through most of the basic testing.

Finally after many years, I am getting going on the LED underlit Liquor shelves.
Here is a schematic I drew up:
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/schematic.jpg

Construction is well underway:

http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/100MEDIA_IMAG0012.jpg
The picture makes the shelf wood stain look darker than the cabinet color but its actually not that big of a difference in real life, I think its close enough for goverment work...

Here are my inspiration photos from the internet:

I just ordered this remote controlled color changing LED light tape kit from Amazon:

Stay tuned...

Finished contruction today.

The first thing I have to say is, the LED light kit is great!

The remote is even better than the one pictured, the color palate is virtually infinite, they are trimable and they are not expensive.
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/IMAG0295.jpg

I layed them in rows across the bottom of the inside of the shelf.
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/IMAG0296.jpg
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/IMAG0297.jpg

I had to rearrange them a few times to increase the density toward the back so lighting was even across all shelves. I also aimed each row backward a bit.
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/IMAG0299.jpg

You can see the small blocks that hold the back of each piece of acid frosted glass up. The nice thing is, you would have to be eight feet tall to get this perspective. Once the LEDs are on and the bottles are in place you can't even see them.
http://i184.photobucket.com/albums/x248/jjcritch/IMAG0298.jpg

I am very happy with how they turned out:
