View Full Version : POC 1 & 2 Won't play in Samsung BDP1200

Neither of the movie disks will play. POC 1 gets stuck at the "loading" screen that appears before the trailers. POC 2 makes all the way to what appears to be the main menu (a talking skull), while it isn't frozen there is nothing to select and none of the buttons do anything (I can press stop, but hitting play or menu restarts from the beginning).

Anyone have a similar problems? Am I missing something obvious here or is this a firmware issue?

Nope, you're not alone! There's a thread on this in the BR player section, but all you'll find is that Samsung is aware of the problem and is looking into it.

That's the same problem I had with the Philips BDP9000 that I wrote up in another thread. It was solved by using Samsung 1.1 firmware. Is that a possibility for BDP1200 owners?

Greetings,

It appears as though the issue has been resolved. There is a firmware update that can be downloaded via ethernet that fixes it.

My player is currently dowlnoading it.

Wow. I am impressed. A quick firmware fix on the same day as release. I in no way want to flame as I have both Blu-Ray and HD DVD, but with all those problems with combos, it is disappointing Uni nor Toshiba were quick enough to fix the issue or even admit which Uni finally did 3 weeks later.

Shhhhh.

They were busy investigating (dusting their manufacturing plants). After all, one of HD DVD's perceived advantages was the fact that they could use the old plants that they had been using for DVD with little fuss or muss, so obviously they didn't feel they needed to clean the plants.

Meanwhile, with all that new Blu-ray pressing equipment, they dusted and vacuumed some. Hence, BD's are cleaner and HD DVD's come out, sometimes with hairs and other particles "coating" the lense in a superior "dust process." ;)

Ha. Just kidding. Well, kinda. My HD DVD's come out pretty foul sometimes, but no idea why. Meanwhile, it looks like Toshiba finally got around to releasing a firmware update to help with that if early reports on 1.6 are to be believed.

I've been busy watching POTC 1 &2, so I haven't gotten around to doing that painfully slow process of firmware updating my XA2... yet. Soon.

Kinda strange though that there are essentially three players total on the HD DVD platform (and all three based off one another) and Universal/Toshiba still can't test compatibility and read problems in a timely manner, but BD has theirs fixed within days.

Hmmmm....

Firmware update solved the issue no worries.

It's amazing how fast firmwares can show up when it is a HUGE issue!

I bet if The Matrix didn't play on a Tosh, they would have fixed it fast! Some titles are more important than others. PoTC series are seen as critical titles for the format, just as the Matrix is for HD DVD.

But kudos to Samsung for releasing this patch when it could have been another black eye for them...wonder what took them so long the first time they had a player issue!

It was probably something very trivial for Samsung to fix.

We have never seen an update from Toshiba that was only targeted to deal with a single issue.

There never has been a single issue that was on that level. Plus, it must have been something obvious, or a known issue with the present firmware.

Thumbs up for Samsung for this lightning fast firmware update. I've just received my unit today and it's been great so far. Can't wait for my POTC discs to arrive.

I'm attempting to watch POTC II on my Samsung 1200 player.

The coming attractions work fine, but when I get to the main menu of the movie (with the skull and crossbones), there are no selections underneath! There is literally no way for me to play this movie.

Anyone else out there having this problem?

Brian

Did you update your firmware? I new version came out yesterday for your player.

I was not aware of that. How would I get this software update and install it?

Thanks!

Just download and burn or use the player to update if it's internet connected. I haven't tried it myself, but there's a good chance this will help.

Downloaded this fix, installed it, and the glitch is gone! Also, the load times seem to be reduced.

More testing tomorrow...

Thanks for everyone's help,
Brian

OK, since I'm never truly satisfied, here is another minor glitch I've noticed with this player.

When the player turns on it seems to default to HDMI output (OK). However, even though I have changed the output in this mode to 1080p multiple times, every time I fire up the player the HDMI output re-defaults to 1080i.

Is there some kind of setting that I'm missing, or is this another firmware glitch?

Thanks,
Brian

I recieved both curse of the black pearl and dead man's chest yesterday from Amazon. What a joke. I own two blu ray players the SONY and the new Samsung BDP-1200. Curse of the Black Pearl take forever to load on both players and Dead Man's Chest won't load at all on the SONY player, just stops hangs up. On the Samsung it loads after a long delay and plays all the trailers but when the main Flaming Skull logo comes up there is now "Play Movie" selection to start the movie. It just keeps playing the audio. Is anyone else experiencing this. Do I have a defective disk? I am aware of the firmware fix stated for Samsung BDP-1200 but Curse played on the Sony player but Dead Man's Chest wouldn't load at all on the Sony.
