Bump because I'd like to know. No DivX right? What about XviD?

View Full Version : PS3 firmware 1.8 coming tomorrow. Upscaling!! fanerman 05-26-07, 12:46 AM So can anyone confirm which movie formats the PS3 WILL stream? Bump because I'd like to know. No DivX right? What about XviD? awx 05-26-07, 01:32 AM Xvid and Divx are implementations of the same MPEG4 ASP standard. So right now neither one works. Nuke1096 05-26-07, 05:07 AM http://www.pcsx2.net/public/KHII_02.jpg http://www.pcsx2.net/public/KHII_08.jpg http://www.pcsx2.net/public/KHII_07.jpg That's from Kingdom Hearts II Now that I got your attention. Those pictures are NOT on the PS3, but in fact from an actual working PS2 emulator. http://www.pcsx2.net Anotherwords, this is what our PS3 "should" be doing, but isnt. All we're getting really is a blurring filter effect applied and standard upscaling that most tv's can do already. We're not getting an actual resolution increase, or proper AA, or anything else that proper emulation can offer. Just take all this how you will. I just want people to be aware of what proper software emulation on a ps3 can do if it were properly implemented in a future firmware update. Slacker George 05-26-07, 06:44 AM Lovely pictures but it's simply not possible to make all PS2 games do that automatically. If you'll notice on that website KH2 isn't even completely playable yet: Zerofrog has fixed the SPS (Spikey Polygon Syndrome) that plagued Kingdom Hearts 2, making the game much more viewable and almost playable! Maybe one day Sony will start releasing patches for some of the more popular games to allow this kind of thing, but don't hold your breath. Doug Schiller 05-26-07, 08:38 AM Can someone verify, If I set God of War II (or any progressive game) to the progressive setting, it defeats the PS3 upscaling? As soon as I turn on progressive, the resolution changes back to 480p (which makes sense). But, I could have sworn I saw a screen shot that showed a comparison shot of a 1080i/p GOW2 screen that looked awesome. My 1080i non progressive setting, looks awful. Triptych 05-26-07, 09:24 AM Every $40 DVD player at WalMart supports DivX now. So I can't imagine that Sony has anything to lose by adding support for older MPEG4 variants such as Xvid and Divx. If anything, the MPEG4 AVC codec is the most pirate friendly codec ever made and Sony already supports this. People say the Usenet groups are already moving to AVC so what is the harm in ASP? Those $40 DVD players pay a licensing fee. InfernoSoul 05-26-07, 11:17 AM That's from Kingdom Hearts II Now that I got your attention. Just curious, they have this for Linux, would it be possible to install YellowDog Linux or whatever its called then install this load the PS2 games and play through the emulator that way? Or is sony still blocking certain access to the RSX or any other certain things that would not allow this to work. I'd be happy to install that YellowDog to use this emulator. risk235 05-26-07, 11:28 AM After I installed 1.8 I was playing MLB 2K7 and notice that my reciever was displaying DTS instead of Dolby D. I put on Resistance and it display Dolby D. Wondering if any of yall had the same thing happen. Bruuce 05-26-07, 11:30 AM When I loaded up College Hoops 2k7 I noticed it said DTS also. On the back of the case, it says nothing about DTS being included. eyerox 05-26-07, 11:57 AM Now that I got your attention. And this is also why the xbox 360 only supports a handful of titles. Personally, I would rather have MANY MANY more titles with the current system than only a few titles through emulation. Obviously you like the xbox style emulation better. To each his own. Nuke1096 05-26-07, 03:52 PM This is what the xbox 360 does. And this is also why the xbox 360 only supports a handful of titles. Well seeing as how the hardware for backwards support for PS1 and PS2 games is "already" inside the PS3, they will always support many many games regardless of what they "add". There's no reason they cant start adding real emulation support title by title. Starting with the popular ones. And the games that dont get the benefits are still supported normally with the built in hardware in the meantime. SpeedyHTPC 05-26-07, 04:36 PM It maybe that the PS3 doesnt have the power to do a scaleup of the PS1/2 games like those of the emulator on a PC. They have problems emulating some games (in this emulator) because of speed. Nuke1096 05-26-07, 04:37 PM Nah it's got more than enough power. eyerox 05-26-07, 06:17 PM Well seeing as how the hardware for backwards support for PS1 and PS2 games is "already" inside the PS3, they will always support many many games regardless of what they "add". You want them to have the hardware BC we have now, and you ALSO want them to work on software emulation of games like the xbox 360. There is no problem with wanting these things, and if we had them I would be happy. Personally, I would rather have someone working on upscaling and other issues at the moment than to work on redundant software emulation. Maybe in the future when other issues are solved someone might tackle this problem. I own an xbox 360, and I'm not saying the box is the measuring stick for video game consoles, but the ps3 blows the xbox away as far as backwards compatibility. I also recognize that you never mentioned the xbox. I did. Again, while I would love the emulation that your asking for, I think you might be asking for a littlie but too much at the moment. I also recognize that if no one asks, we surely won't get it. Edit:and you do realize that the emulator you posted only has 125 playable games. The others are in all kinds of non-finishable states. This is there definition for playable "You can get from 'new game' to 'end credits'. This is regardless of FPS, it simply means you could with a great deal of patience, complete the game! eg: Slow, but stable!" Megalith 05-26-07, 06:25 PM Who cares about emulation. Just give me Reon HQV-quality upscaling for PS1/2 games and I'll be happy forever. ...The problem I have with emulation is that what you get just isn't what was intended, even if certain parts do look better. The fact that the polygons look smooth and hi-res but the 2D portions look like bilinear-resampled disasters really bothers me, for instance. zoro 05-27-07, 12:02 AM I love SD upscale, retiring my XA2 and will get an Elite 360 insyead JimSD 05-29-07, 01:40 PM Has anyone noticed image cropping on the sides using the PS3 to upconvert? I have my TV set to Full Pixel mode (basically dot-by-dot) and see very thin black bars on the side of the screen with DVDs. Blu-Ray discs don't do this nor do DVDs upconverted from a Sony NS75H DVD player. TwinTurboJosh 05-29-07, 02:02 PM Has anyone noticed image cropping on the sides using the PS3 to upconvert?
