View Full Version : POTC Problem with PS3
aclerok 05-23-07, 01:31 PM When accessing Scoundrels of the Sea I selected to just watch those features instead of having to watch through the movie and select which parts I wanted. SotS was playing fine, and then I wanted to get back to the main menu. When I tried doing this it kept looping me back to the SotS menu. Eventually it stayed on the loading screen for over a minute and I just had to stop playback and restart the disc in order to get back to the main menu.
I know that there have been issues identified with some standalone players, but from what I've read the BD-J shouldn't be an issue on the PS3. Has anyone experienced a problem with the menus when trying to navigate?
Also to clarify, both movies play fine without problems. And I haven't had an issue with any other the other features on either disc.
EDIT: I have tried this after installing 1.8 firmware and am no longer able to get stuck in the menus. Perhaps there was a Java update in the firmware as well.

I work with Java..... sounds about right to be honest :D
Hopefully some firmware patches will come out to eliminate some of these issues. Maybe the 1.80 patch tomorrow?
donricouga 05-23-07, 01:56 PM I never even touched this feature. But i'll try it out when i get a chance. Too busy watching these new BD's as well as rentals from online Blockbuster.
JE3146, I also work with JAVA.
Doesn't sound right to me ;)

I know I know.. I just like to give Java grief cus I work QA. ;)

It could be, so run with it until people can either confirm or deny it....

Since I have a PS3 and POTC on order, yes it does.

Very understandable. By Title I'm a java developer, but of course, i get stuck with DBA duties, App server configuration and maintenance and QA testing :(
QA testing for developers under the gun isn't fun

On order?
PoTC 1&2 are on my porch right now...
Unfortunately I won't be home for another 5 hours...
The fact that it plays, but could have a problem in the menu isn't a huge problem to me. But it is something that I would expect to be fixed.

As a BI/DW consultant, believe me I know this as well. It is surprisingly very easy for a minute issue like this to sneak through many rounds of testing and it never rear its face. There have been many times I've had things come back to me after going through 3-4 separate test cycles simply because certain buttons weren't pushed in a certain order at a certain time.
I would assume that this is an actually a minor bug with the java code on the disc and not the BD-J on the PS3 running that code.

As long as you watch this one supplimental feature without developing ADD and a burning desire to press buttons during the presentation, you should be fine. I don't see what the big deal is.

Yet you jump in and comment all over the place at the first little problem on a HD DVD disk.

1) If you're watching one specific suppliment on one BD disc, then get terrets and start mashing buttons.....it may freeze.
<a world away from>
2) The HD DVD is not recognized.
Clear enough?
I noticed that was a little wonky on my PS3. Also it doesn't seem to support resume like other BD discs do when you exit to the XMB.
ShagMan 05-23-07, 03:51 PM I don't fool around with extras like IME that much, so these problems are a non-issue for me :)

There was no mashing buttons. Not that I owe you an explanation, but I entered the feature via the main menu to see what it was about. I then decided I didn't want to watch it then and wanted to exit to the main menu. Upon pressing the (square) button, which would normally bring up a pop-up menu, nothing happened. I then tried using the L1 to go back and this just started it over. So I then tried using the Top Menu after using the (triangle) button, which is when it froze on me.
This bug isn't a big issue to me, I am more just informing others to look out for something that could potentially be a problem with this or future releases.
eddy_winds 05-23-07, 04:18 PM Bummer
:(
Omg. Reading everyone's comments some of you sound like Blu-ray issues are a "Don't ask Don't Tell" policy, "Ignore the problem and it'll go away", or "Don't use the features and you won't have a problem".
C'mon, people.

Not that it is related, but you need to get the remote (assuming you don't have it), it costs less than most of the BD movies in retail and works great.*
*as long as you aren't trying to integrate its functionality into a learning/programmable IR remote ;)

Be fair Fett. It's like 4 HD DVDs split among two players and 3 of the 4 discs are European discs. Currently, the only "disc not recognized" in the U.S. is "Relentless Enemies" on the 360 add on.

I don't know what you're talking about because just about every combo has reported problems and most of the recent ones aren't recognized on the 360, even the Ultimate Matrix discs! Sorry, but that's a heck of a lot bigger problem than a one in a million button combo freeze possibility!

Not a HD-DVD issue. It was corrected with a software update from MS.
thanks for letting us know. i also have a ps3 and ordered pirates of carribean 1 and 2. .
i dont understand why people would undermine that kind of stuff. if something doesnt work i truelly like to know. specially since i have to import discs from the usa. and i cant just easily return it when a disc doesnt work.
so i am glad aclerok reported it. if you have any more weird problems let me know. thanks!

You hit the nail on the head. I'm waiting for a harmony type remote to come along. But yes, I'm painfully aware of how much more difficult it is using the game controller. ;)
bassmonkeee 05-23-07, 06:19 PM I've got the Blu Ray remote for the PS3.
Writing this quickly so I can run out the door.
I'm currently watching the Curse of the Black Pearl. When I first loaded the disc into the PS3, I went to the Scoundrels thing. The coins showed up fine on the screen while the movie played with the tidbits. I was able to hit enter to "grab" them. I was able to exit to the Scoundrel screen, and watch a bit of the info, but when I went to exit the Scoundrels, I got a quick flash of the screen with all of the Scoundrel extras, and then the screen went blank.
Just like in the Dragon's Lair BD-J menus.
The only way I could get out of the blank screen was to exit out of the disc using the remote. The movie is playing fine, though, and looks amazing.
There might be a workaround to view all of the Scoundrel secrets, but I will have to spend some more time with it.
But, the problem certainly wasn't related to any button mashing. My game controllers aren't even turned on--only the BD remote.

This sort of thing is why I'm moving over to Rails.
I'll still get asked to fix DB issues, I'm sure. I don't mind it now and then.
bunkaroo 05-24-07, 12:15 AM I have a BDP-S1 and just upgraded to version 1.6 firmware.
Both of these discs took FOREVER to load, like minimum 2 minutes. Then once they did, I could do nothing during any of the trailers except scan. No menu, no chapter forward, nothing else. I hope this is not the beginning of a trend with Disney Blu-Ray's.

LOL..
bunkaroo 05-24-07, 01:36 AM I was able to skip through these using the Next Chapter button.
Do you have a BDP-S1?
If so, are you on Firmware 1.6?
Anyone try POTC on their PS3 with the 1.8 update?
joe_six_pack 05-24-07, 06:29 AM It works fine. I watched part II. No skipping or anything. The menus worked fine
I didn't try any of the interactivity crap though. I tried the scoundrels of the sea, but didn't test it out as thoroughly as the original poster.

No, sorry. I didn't read the post carefully enough; I'm running on a PS3. I'll get rid of that post.
Fettastic 05-24-07, 10:53 AM I tried Scoundrels of the Sea and it worked just fine and dandy. You push the square button and a menu pops up, just like it's supposed to. I'm assuming the OP doesn't have the latest firmware. *sigh*

Those standalones are just crap next to the PS3. The PS3 is lightening fast. The spinning coin was on the screen for maybe 4 or 5 seconds. Everything worked like a charm (this is on firmware 1.6). And yes you can chapter skip all the trailers.
There's just no reason why the $1,000.00 standalone is so inferior to the $500 game system.

Well, I had problems with the BD-J menu in Scoundrels of the Sea yesterday. But, they hadn't released 1.8 yet, either. Are you saying that you tried it this morning and you can see the full list of extras on disc one on the PS3? I'll be very happy if this was fixed with the 1.8 update.

I definitely had the latest firmware upon original testing...and 1.8 right now to be exact.
It is seeming to me that everything is working as expected now. I don't know whether or not they snuck something to do with the java into the update, but I am no longer able to reproduce getting stuck in the menus as I was before. I'll update the original post to reflect this.

That's good to know. Thanks for the update. I wonder if this will correct the BD-J issues with Dargon's Lair, too. I can't wait to update when I get home today from work. Four day weekend. Whoo hoo!

I still have 1.6 and it all worked perfectly.
Maybe it's one of those things where some HD-A1s work perfectly and some have issues even when they have the same firmware. Or maybe your java just didn't load right for whatever reason the first time you tried it.*hunches shoulders*
