OK, I won't be making anymore HT purchases, or doing any work on my basement for a little while, as I bought myself a new toy.

All the Brits (even some Oz & Dutch folks) will appreciate this toy :) Imagine my surprise to find it in rural Ontario close to my home.

Nice find. The father of my best friend at school had one of those. It was really cutting edge in its day.

Very nice, my dad's owned a shop for about 36 years that started out British-only. One of his customers had a Rover 3500 with US serial #00000001

My brother also has a Triumph TR8 with the Rover 3.5L V8. Cool car :)

My dad had one, I guess that's when i fell in love with it. My wife thinks I'm crazy, I can;t afford it, I will have to leave my daily runabout outside for winter now.

BUT!!!, what the hell, what a classic, and in really good condition. In another 10 years it will be a true classic for sure :) Best Police car the British Police ever had. I'll get the leather recondiotned, car detailed and it will be good to go.

After that, it's lower the suspension, put Rover Vitesse Alloys on it, and baby her for the next 30 years!!

What with my:

1976 Minty Raleigh Chooper MKII
1984 Rover SD1 VDP
PG Tips &
Monster Munch Pickled Onion crisps in the cupboard
The wifes New Age Music collection (God I hate Depeche Mode)

I'll be in Nostalgia Heaven

Ahh the memories. Is that the bike with the long seat, sissy bar and the gear selector on the cross bar. My best friend had one of those too. All you need now to complete the collection, is a Sony Walkman II and a box of Curly Wurlys.

That is a thing to behold. Excellent car you have there. I myself am an ex South African and guess what?? That was my first car. Actually my Rover was the 2.6 SDX straight six with a 4 speed auto tranny. It was an '81 model year. Down draft Weber monster carbs.

This was to date my favourite car, and not because it was my first car. It has tons of interior space and I guarantee that any pj will fit in the back (bonus) :D What a smooth ride that was/is , not to mention what good looks it has. Raced with a friend of mine over 615km between two cities and took 4 hours to cover that. He had a Mitsubishi Tredia Turbo . I won... :D

You're right there. Someone even went to great lengths to get your car out of Australia...;)

At least the steering is on the right side.....but a British made car...crikey...reliability is not the first word that comes to mind...

Now if i can only find someone returning from the UK to bring a nice set of SD1 Vitesse alloy wheels with them :)

Not even close to the same thing. The Rover is a Big 5 door car, and does not explode if you kick the rear bumper

The British equivalent of the Pinto, is probably the Ford Capri

How did they extend a Pinto without it blowing up? just looking at the rear end of a Pinto was near certain death no? ;)

Hey Mark,

Damn straight I am serious. I found a set in the Netherlands fairly cheap 135Euro, but shipping i bet will be a killer so I am not sure about them. So If I do find a set in the UK when your there assuming I have not bought a set by then, then great! Appreciate the help.

Once I get the car home, I'll take my 76 Infra Red Chopper out to stand beside it. Hell if I could put my CRT in the back of the Rover, everyone would see how perfect it is as a CRT Transporter ;)

Hi Gents, Keith here (G70 owner from East London - currently the slums soon to be an Olympic Village!) The Rover 3500 SDI was known as a 'Jam Sandwich' because the 'Old Bill' used to drive them (Cops) - not sure why we call 'em the 'Old Bill'?? But the SDI's were called that because they were always white and had a fluorescent orange/red stripe down the sides to denote a Police Car....making 'em look like a jam (jelly) sandwich! Wouldn't call it a classic car myself.... now a Jensen Interceptor III that's a real British car (and just as unreliable)! I'll see if I can find a pic of a Jam sandwich for you!

Wasn't the engine derivative of an earlier Buick? Almost bought one of these when they were still sold here in the US. Always struck me as a cool car. Still see one or two of them on the road around here once in a while

Yes, it was based on the Buick 215 aluminum engine...

Did you guys know that 3500 was one of the first (i'm thinking THE first) to have a drive train (engine and gearbox) that was designed to drop to the ground and slide under the transmission tunnel in the event of a head-on collision, so you didn't wind up with it sitting beside you in a crash.....this was before the days of impact absorbing crumple zones .....quite a safety feature.

Sorry I don't know why I hold onto these useless facts.....

A beautiful car spoilt by poor build quality - my dad had two which rusted within a couple of years and the trim within was poorly shaped and fitted plastic and cardboard. Come to think of it...the engine disintegrated on the way home from college in my first year, leaving pieces along a few hundred yards of the road.

Still, fond memories and it went well.

That is a sweet ride indeed  . I am now completely and utterly jealous. Gotta love all those buttons for rear fog lamps et al. If memory serves me, I think you should have that nice wood grain as well.

Still waiting for my childrens passports.....&*^&*^ . I wish that the SA high (or low in this case) Commission will pull their fingers out of their proverbial what nots already. I was told ....3 weeks ago ... that it would only take ten days..still counting. Hopefully my UK trip is still on.

Yeah, the only eyesore , as it were, are those rims. I never did like them. Real dirt collecting crevices which are pretty difficult to extracate from. Its still a site to behold. I am a lisenced tech so ....if its needed. :D
Little titbit for You Ken....don't forget to fill the carbs with oil up top..if they are the Webers.

Lucky devil you

Can't tell you how good the condition is. Honestly it is in as good a condition as my dads was in 88, and his was an 84 as well.

The paint on the hood & roof is not quite as good as the sides due to excessive oxidation of the clear coat. But I am sure it can easily be fixed.

By the way, fired up the XGLC today, and that to still blows me away for an old piece of kit :)

It's got Efi by the way, as it is Oz spec and they put Injection in. Not quite as good as the Vitesse injection, but nonetheless injection
