Anyone recieve this version (http://www.fox.co.uk/dvd/the_fountain-11580/11580/) of The Fountain? I'd love to know about the region code and how the quality is compared to the mediocre Warner U.S. release.

Gotta love region coding. One of the aces up the sleeve for HD DVD in my opinion. I would order this in a heart beat if I actually thought it would play on a US player.

Who's distributing it? If it's Warner, it's region-free, so the region code dig at this disc isn't applicable.

The advantage is that HD DVD doesn't have region coding enabling you to buy whatever HD DVD releases you want from around the world and not have to worry about it.

I would rather see that then the HT geeks trying to figure out ways to circumvent their players so they can get the uber UK release or the nice French one of their favorite discs. Region coding is just another way to entice end users to figure out ways to hack into the system.

no region coding for HD-DVD is a big plus.

Now that HD has gotten rid of PAL\NTSC\Secam issues there really is not point for region coding except for greed and to hurt customers.

I have about 6 foreign HD-DVD's and just this week ordered the Graduate and the Elephant Man on HD-DVD from France.

Fox has international rights so I'll be able to pick it up from Japan or Korea once it's released since it's still Region A. Or I could wait one year and the European version would be region-free.

I'd love to read some reviews when someone finally gets this. I rented the U.S. release from Netflix and thought the audio could sound much better.

I have a strong feeling that region coding isn't the reason we aren't seeing Fox on HD DVD. BD+ and more are the reason. Fox is very serious about copy protection and their lack of title support for BD lately just goes to show it. The problem is, YOU WILL NEVER HAVE A COMPLETELY SECURE COPY PROTECTION SYSTEM. The moment you say you do is the moment you will have every hacker out there going out of their way to prove you wrong. And at the prices that Fox is offering their titles they would probably be the first studio to find their stuff up for grabs on the net.

Not a review, but here you go: Region is B, PQ (MPEG-2 on a BD-50) is decent with basically the same issues I read about the Warner disc. AQ is really good, especially the bombastic music cues near the end. I haven't seen or heard the WB release, so I can't really compare the two.

Thanks hollywoodguy. Do you have a way of confirming that the disc is indeed coded Region B and not just marked that way on the jacket? I've read elsewhere that it's actually A,B,C like Night At The Museum was. I would really like to get this but if it won't play in a region A PS3, then it's useless to me.

If it will play in a Region A machine, I'm going to be MORE pissed-off at WB for their bare-bones release.

It wont work on a Region A BPD-S1 wrong region screen, I will try it on a Region A PS3 later tonight. I tried it on a Region B PS3 picture looked quite poor specs on back of the box says it a BD50 and it is MPEG2.

Edit

Does not work on a Region A PS3 watched it on a region B drive the picture was actually reasonable, the dark scenes were a bit flat but that's the same on all versions. Bit rate was stayed around the mid 30's.
