View Full Version : 1080i only (non 720p) tv's issue FIXED?

This is my 1st post ever and only because so many people are getting this upscaling issue just plain WRONG! I have a 480p/ 1080i tv and after the update was able to upconvert my PS2 games, including FFXI to 1080i. I was also able to scale "Motorstorm" and "Oblivion" to 1080i, the trick is to tell the PS3 your TV handles 1080i only. If you leave 480P checked the PS3 will default to that. As for DVDs I wa also able to upconvert a regular DVD but as the software updater states "...copy protected DVDs will upconvert through HDMI only". I'm seeing alot of articles and posts misinforming people that HDMI is the only way the upscaling will work. Upscaling through RGB is limited compared to HDMI but only when it comes to upscaling to 1080P and copy protected DVDs. At the moment I'am very happy with this update because I don't have to drop a few thousand on, and this is my opinion, an infererior LCD or Plasma. Hopefully this post clears up some confusion.

According to this, all you have to do is uncheck everything but 1080i and it upscales 720p PS3 games. Can anyone here confirm this?

Update: Someone just said they tried it and it doesn't work. Probably another rumor starter said the above. So I guess you can ignore.

Update 2: Now a second (high number poster) confirms Motorstorm and Oblivion are being upscaled to 1080i?

Holy sh't I stand corrected. my 1080i only tv is sohwing motorstorm and resistance in HD. wow.

I went in and checked off 480p,720p, and 1080i and bam it worked.

So can anyone here confirm or deny this? Is it possibly different tv's?

Update 3: So far it is being denied by several others.

i have not tried since i'm not on a 1080i only crt via component. judging from the fact that blu-ray discs scale to 720p fine now, i'd think scaling to 1080i would work too for dvd's and games.

games should work for sure, there maybe other technical issues for dvd's. way to screw paying customers with copyright protection, now prob only pirated copies will work for upscaling.

If Sony fixed this to where all previous 720p only games are now getting upscaled to 1080i....I'm going to be very very impressed with them especially since they didn't uber hype this update and it has many of the major issues addressed.

Also, the scaling for games is more difficult that BR or DVD. The processor can be used for BR/DVD while it is already very heavily in use for games.

So it only works when you have component and not HDMI?

No, the HDMI only thing is about upscaling DVD's to 1080p.

someone also said make sure to check 720p and it works, interesting, we need confirmation on this

I tried the Motorstorm demo with all settings checked.
Plays in 720p.

I tried with only 480 and 1080 checked.
Plays in 480p.

Maybe because it's the demo? Don't know.

do you have a 1080i only tv?
if not try unchecking everything but 1080 and let us know

No, I don't.
I felt that with 720p unchecked, it would mimic what the 480/1080 only people have.

Also, you can't uncheck 480, it's there by default.

Anyway, hope I'm wrong and it does work for people. I'll try it with the Resistance fullgame when I get home.

You have to uncheck 480p as well according to the post.

I'll try it tonight. All I have is Genji and Blazing Angels right now, but both are 720p.

I would be suprised if it worked. You would think Sony would have mentioned it, but then again, they never really owned up to the problem either.

I tried this with the Motorstorm demo on my 1080i-only TV and it does not work.

You're not allowed to uncheck standard NTSC (480i). With only standard and 1080i checked, the demo pops down to 480i. When you add 480p to the list, it pops down to 480p. When you add 720p to the list, it fails to sync to 720p and you get a black screen.

Looks like another bogus story.

....from what i can tell, it doesn't work:

HD display: Sony 65xbr10w w/ 480i/480p/1080i component input

PS3: component connection

Game: Motorstorm disc

PS3 output selection: 480i/480p/1080i
Actual display: 480p

PS3 output selection: 480i/1080i
Actual display: 480i

PS3 output selection: 480i/480p/720p/1080i
Actual display: 720p (display stutters)

PS3 output selection: 480i/720p/1080i
Actual display: 720p (display stutters)

PS3 output selection: 480i/720p
Actual display: 720p (XMB stutters if you accept)

...for me there is no change, but i just checked the one title, 720p game must be displayed in 480p.

the scaling for games only apply to PS and PS2 games, not PS3.

I can't check right now but it sounds bogus to me. It's not possible to uncheck 480p over HDMI, or 480i over component.

So we are still waiting for upscaling for Ps3 games sort of the whole point.. i mean its is great you can upscale old games but why not PS3 ones it looks to be possible if you can do the other it may be harder to do but you should still be able to do it

scaling ps3 games might take up too much of the processor power. from what i've heard, scaling for the ps3 games is up to the developers and not the ps3 hardware.

......i think the ps3 game upscaling is in the pipeline, it just requires more time.....i would think this is a large scale change that would show in a major firmware revision, ie 2.x etc.

I've heard the same types of post on otherforums and I don't believe it. Why would Sony go through the effort creating a 960x1080 resolution in their SDK if they could just enable scaling? I stand that these titles need a patch to support 960x1080 and that is the only way they will get 1080 support.

It already has been addressed by Sony:

I have a hitachi 65f59a with hdmi, the ps3 will not let me uncheck 480p, so if i uncheck 720p motorstorm plays in 480p not 1080i, if i leave 720p checked i get 720p, no stutter.

They, Sony, enabled a new resolution in the SDK so developers can make 1080 games with a marginal performance hit for those folks with 1080 only displays. It is one solution and I don't think we'll see any others. If it wasn't addressed by Sony who updated the SDK? Although this also need to be addressed by developers to work as well.

Sure a hardware scaler that does it would be nice, but it doesn't seem to be happening. I still have yet to see a dedicated scaler in any picture of the PS3 PCBs.

Now by address did you want a PR statement made on Sony's behalf?

What I'm questioning is the accuracy or trueness of this article, I have yet to see this confirmed by
a) any other gaming media source
b) any game developer (we are still getting 720p games that lack upscaling)
c) an official Sony source such as a press release

I don't consider an article written by a non-mainstream gaming media source the same thing as Sony addressing an issue.

Maybe I'm to much of a skeptic at times, but I have not seen anyone (especialy Sony) say "yep that article is true"

so until then it is not confirmed and not addressed by Sony

Beyond3d is pretty respectable source and their forums are known for having game developers as members. In fact a couple of the Team Ninja guys are on those forums.

Oh and VF5 uses the 960x1080 resolution and so does the Ninja Gaiden Sigma Demo. So I would guess that confirms that 960x1080 is being used.

VF5=Virtua Fighter 5

Two other sources, but both point to Beyond 3D so take them for what you will:

I tried it on both Genji and Blazing Angels. If I select just 1080i (and NTSC default) it drops back to 480i. So the claim is bogus. :(
