So that would be a no, since they stream from window media player 11?

I'll have to try one out here at lunch.

Unless iTune is DLNA compatible, which I don't think it is (anyone?). When I tested the streaming capabilities out I think the PS3 only sees WMP 11 but not iTune... but I can't recall if I have iTune up this morning or not. Will need to try it out.

WMP !?? WTF?

why would WMP work with the ps3? sony and microsoft are like water and oil. What is the deal with this DLNA thing? Is it opensource? I won't touch a windows media file or app with a very long pole.

guess we wait for software to be developed for this protocol.

So WMP won't play AAC files?

He's talking about the DLNA compliance which is built into WMP11.

Well, The PS3 can play back all WMA standard audio files up to lossless (not sure about video), but it definitely has problems with the various forms of .mp4, which is unfortunate. Hopefully they'll fix that sometime in the future.

Got it, thanks.

I'm asking because my brother just bought the Apple TV, but he wants to return it now since the ps3 can media stream, just wanted to make sure it can do what he wants. Not sure it will.

That's intelligent.

I'm using WMP 11, it's free and works great with the PS3.

WMP 11 media server is a DLNA compliance server so you can stream media from a PC running WMP 11 server to a PS3 with the latest v1.8 firmware.

I don't think iTune is DLNA compliant (anyone?) so I you will not be able to stream media from iTune (on a PC or a Mac) to PS3.

As for AAC audio... I guess as long as a file is not copy-protected (DMA protected) PS3 should be able to play it. Stuffs you bought from Apple iTune store are protected unfortunately.

This is awesome. Do you think Microsoft is pissed that Media Player 11 works with streaming with the PS3?

Why should MS be pissed? This is started by Sony and Intel and MS is one of the DLNA board members. MS probably has a say in defining the spec/standard. From Wiki:

Originally founded by Sony and Intel in June of 2003, the current DLNA organization (as of Spring 2007) consists of eight Board companies (Hewlett-Packard, Intel, Matsushita, Microsoft, Nokia, Philips, Samsung, Sony), sixteen non-board Promoter companies (AMD, Broadcom, Comcast, DigiOn, Dolby, Huawei, IBM, Kenwood, Lenovo, LGE, Motorola, NXP, Pioneer, Sharp, ST Microelectronics and Toshiba), and approximately 240 Contributor (or regular) members.

Dont quote me (seriously), but I swear when I was updating to 1.8 it said it can play AAC copy protected files, streaming of course.

Wait at least a month to see how things shake out.

Those high quality, unprotected AAC music files that Apple and EMI through iTunes should work on the PS3. But Apple's protected music and videos won't work.

I don't remember seeing that but it would be nice. Apple and Sony ought to work together in this area.
