I for one dont support stealing of media but the right to back up your legit copy.
Maybe the studios are finally understanding?

I don't want the studios to "include [small scale piracy] in the pricing". Personally, I don't see why the studios don't just start offering to replace discs that get messed up. Perhaps for a small re-print fee. The consumer would HAVE to send in the original disc in order to get a new disc.

I think it's pretty rare that people make "back-up copies" without giving them away to friends.

As for the HTPC issue, the studios could have online stores/servers that provide one free copy that keeps track of the disc used to copy to the PC. Use full DRM copy-protection on those files. If the consumer then wants to have it on multiple PC's, he has to buy it again.

The consumer would know exactly what he's/she's getting for the price. If a hard drive crashes and/or the disc no longer plays, the consumer would know exactly what the cost would be to get it replaced.
