View Full Version : Official Westinghouse TX Series ( TX-42F430S, TX-47F430S ) Owner's Thread
Unofficially yes. Try it and see, but results have been varied. The Trident video processor supports the mode, but it is unsupported in the set's operating firmware so it's technically an unofficial feature. That didn't stop Westinghouse from beginning to claim 1080p/24 capability on their website though.
Thanks for answering this. Should I update the firmware to ensure 1080p/24hz works or will that make no difference. I can't test this yest because I don't yet have my blu ray player that will use this feature.

1080p/24hz works fine on my ps3 on 1.2.0 firmware on a sept build.
Joseph4469 01-17-08, 03:37 PM I bought the Tx 42 and i have the firmware version 1.0 or 1.1 from the april build. My question is, should i update the firmware to 1.3? It seems people are having more problems then good with the 1.3 update.
tmpanime 01-17-08, 04:12 PM what is your connection when you get this burn in? dvi to hdmi?
Yes, I'm using a DVI to HDMI cable. I would try DVI to VGA but I'm already using the VGA port for my XBOX 360.
Also, as for the firmware upgrade, I unplugged EVERYTHING from the tv and made sure I have the latest version of the firmware downloaded. It still does nothing when I try the upgrade. I called Westy support and the guy told me "your tv probably doesn't need the update so it's ignoring it". I know I have the September build and I know I'm trying to upgrade to the newer firmware, so I think his comment is BS.
I am still having the dynamic contrast problem and it won't turn off. According to Westy tech support, they suggest that I return it to BB and get an exchange. I was also comparing the image quality on my Westy LVM series 42" and this one and I have to say, the image on the LVM looks so much sharper. Maybe it's because of the smaller size, but even after the tuning I've done on the TX, the LVM looks much better. I'm currently considering getting the 47" version of the LVM instead since I don't really need the tuner and I like the fact that that one has the built-in DVI ports. Not sure at this point *sigh*

can you describe your dynamic contrast problem to me. I'd like to see if I am getting the same problem with mine, and to see if upgrading to the new firmware may be worth it.
smurph98gt 01-17-08, 04:57 PM Well, bonuses finally came around and it's time for me to upgrade. With BestBuys new 12% off coupon out, I'm leaning heavily towards one of these WestingHouses since they're both within the price I want to spend for their respective sizes.
I currently have a 42" TV and am pretty happy with the size, but there's always room to go bigger IMO! Is it worth the extra ~$300 or so to get 5 more (diagonal) inches?
This thread is huge, and fairly old, so I've been trying to keep up with all the changes and major issues with these TVs. It seems several people have had issues, but the majority seem to be fine. Is there any overall concerns about buying one of these TVs now? Is it worth spending the extra $170 to get the 4 year service plan?
Since I only have a PS3 and component cables, will I be able to watch my BluRay movies and video games in 1080p on these televisions, or would I have to invest in an HDMI cable for the PS3 now as well?
Thanks everyone!

tmpanime 01-17-08, 05:04 PM can you describe your dynamic contrast problem to me. I'd like to see if I am getting the same problem with mine, and to see if upgrading to the new firmware may be worth it.
I have noticed the dynamic contrast problem when it's connected to my PC. It will be most noticeable in your wallpaper image. When I open a browser window, the contrast in the shadow areas of my wallpaper image changes drastically. The same happens if I move the window around the screen. For a while I thought it was an optical illusion or just due to the extra light emanating from the huge white area in the browser window, but I really don't think it is. I can see the background image change drastically even if I'm moving a small window around the screen. It's quite annoying because it's making it nearly impossible to calibrate the monitor correctly.
XxProtocolxX 01-17-08, 05:25 PM To all who can't shut off DC. Upgrade to 1.3.0 and you will be able to.

When I open a browser window, the contrast in the shadow areas of my wallpaper image changes drastically.I notice it most when watching 4:3 source with black pillars on either side of the content. The pillars go from almost-black to sort-of-dark gray and everything in between as the brightness of the content changes. It's really annoying. I've never noticed it when watching something that takes up the whole screen though -- I mean, I know it must be happening but I don't ever see it, so it's no loss to me.

Avoid this TV - trust me go with something else. I had so many issues with my TX47, spend the extra on something else - ended up returning it after 28 days. Make sure you check the return policy. Pretty happy with my Samsung LNT-4665F
Best of luck
geoffp1 01-17-08, 07:12 PM i disagree with pagan, my recently bought set which is about a month old is working just great and i don't have any of the issues people complain about on here.
i don't use mine with a PC, but it is superb with component and hdmi.
it is a great deal.

I fail to see the issues you've had with this set. Mine is quite perfect except the blue on black text issue.(which isn't an issue for me, and probably isn't for 99% of consumers).
This is an amazing set for the price.
Emonroe 01-17-08, 08:30 PM can somebody point me in the direction of the new firmware and a bit of help on how to install it? I've had this set since the beginning and want to see if it will erase some of the more annoying problems like handshakes and that damn pink line that I have to manually remove every time I turn it on or off.
nascar24 01-17-08, 08:52 PM My biggest complaint to this day with my Apr Build TX47 is the popping sound through HDMI which I was hoping might be corrected by a firmware update which hasn't been posted yet. The reboot because of picture stuttering is a bit of an annoyance as well. I honestly probably would have went with something that was $200 to $300 more expensive at this point. Probably would have been the sharp 46" 1080P.

Gents,
I agree the price is right, but the performance in my opinion with the set I had was not acceptable. Constant lockups, poor black levels, hand shake issues, and lack of support from Westinghouse at the time, I don't know this may have changed. I have other Westinghouse LCD TV's at home > LVM-37w3, which I use as PC monitor (Excellent) and LTV 27 as a TV in my bedroom. Never had an issue with those units.
Just stating my opinion based on my experience with this particular set. I would not recommend.
FYI - When I returned my TX to the store, the manager (Electronics Expo) stated that they get a lot of these units back for the same issues mentioned.
If your going to get this set make sure you get the extended service contract and check the return policy at the place of purchase
Good luck
tmpanime 01-18-08, 12:47 AM Well, it appears that my problems were caused from using a DVI to HDMI cable. I re-connected my PC to the TV via a DVI to VGA cable and it's looking gorgeous. The "simulated" burn-in issue is completely gone. Also, I'm not experiencing the dynamic contrast problem. I'm guessing that feature only works on HDMI inputs so it's just turning it off on the VGA input altogether.
As for my XBOX 360, I plugged it back to my Onkyo receiver via component cables and from there to the TV via HDMI with no problems.
guyver2077 01-18-08, 10:56 PM Sounds like you may have dodged the bullet that killed my set (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=12792178#post12792178) and guyver2077's set (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=12792290#post12792290), since we also had June 26 2007 5121_1.3.0 firmwares.
Is your part number TW-51211-C047A?
After talking to Westinghouse again, they didn't think a tech would be able to do anything onsite, so they sent me an RMA label instead. UPS Ground will be picking the set tomorrow and, in theory, I will have a refurbished or new unit sent to me in a few weeks.
Now I must resist the temptation to buy another HDTV while I'm waiting for the replacement...
bestbuy will be sending a tech to my house on monday.. i am unsure as to what card i should play..
i was going to go with the playing stupid card and just say the tv stopped turning on.
Outofgum 01-19-08, 03:47 AM Same here... Bestbuy sending a tech to my place on Monday to take a look. I'm just gonna tell him what happened - it died while I was watching it. I have PSP, not sure if that makes a difference.
rogerdiaz 01-19-08, 10:28 AM Sorry If this has been addressed prior...
So I am watching Death Sentence DVD and it happened with the The Kingdom DVD also.
During watching the movie.. the screen goes crazyfor like 1 second with crazy horizontal colors/chopping, It doesnt skip... it just looks like the signal is reconnecting... happens randomly multiple times during the movie.
Anyone experience issues,, i am using HD AV cable to television...
Any fixes? is it the xbox 360 or the TV?
thanks
Lordnosfer 01-19-08, 11:01 AM Roger, I have just started having a similar problem on my TX42F430S. I started in just blue colors and now seems to happen randomly on any color/group of colors. There will be odd horizontal lines cutting through, then when the scene changes they will either disappear or move to somewhere else on the screen. It seems to be an issue with the HDMI port, although I am also getting similar errors via the VGA port as well. I tried resetting the tv to default values, as well as trying all 4 HDMI inputs/different cables and all have produced the same problem.
Currently I am running the 2007 June 26 5112_1.3.0 firmware. The set is only a few months old, but I plan on using the PRP from Best Buy to get a credit and pick up a different set.
Have you tried using a different cable to hook the 360 up at all?
XxProtocolxX 01-19-08, 11:26 AM Lord and Roger, I don't experience anything that you have on the 360 while viewing movies or playing games. I tested the VGA and HDMI port with zero flaws.
5112_1.3.0 - Oct 25 build
Sorry guys, might be your set or your firmware not sure but I don't have any of those issues be it DVD-9 or HD-DVD.
rogerdiaz 01-19-08, 01:17 PM Sorry forgot to mention, I am watching the movies using the xbox 360 HD DVD player add on. It is connected to the xbox 360 via USB.. from xbox 360 to Westy is HD AV cable..
I am using HD AV composite cable...
I have not tried the VGA cable yet..
it only happens with regular DVDs. HD DVDs are flawless on the HD DVD player
Weird. I have the june 1.3 firmware also. Is there really a need to upgrade?
Roger

I guess this is your own call and might depend on whether you are gunning for a refund or an exchange for a set from a different manufacturer, rather than a straight up replacement unit.
When I spoke to Westinghouse, I was completely honest and described my attempt to update the firmware in the hopes we could do some kind of "vulcan neck pinch" on the set to reset it to the factory firmware. We tried quite a few tactics over the phone, including a number of power cycling attempts as well as downloading the firmware again to a couple different freshly formatted USB drives.
At any rate, Westinghouse did not consider my attempt to update the firmware to be "warranty voiding" and sent me an RMA shipping label free of charge (although I did pay UPS $10 to come pick up the set rather than lugging it myself down to one of their shipping locations). Unfortunately Westy does not drop ship, so I will have to wait for my set to be received and processed before they ship me a replacement - an operation that the rep thought could take at least 2-3 weeks minimum and perhaps longer.
rogerdiaz 01-19-08, 01:44 PM Hi you are also using the xbox HD DVD player addon?
I only have probs intermittantly with regular DVDs. HD DVDs are fine.
Thanks,
Roger
Any of you guys wall-mounted this unit? If so how did you take the stand off?
Lordnosfer 01-19-08, 06:59 PM Roger I notice the issue on HD-DVD's(in particular the Universal screen saver when you pause a Universal movie) but not as much as anything connected via HDMI.
I have it wall mounted right now, it took me a few tries to figure out which were the right screws. If you look at the left and right sides of where the base joins the tv and imagine a straight vertical line going up the back of the set from these spots you should see two screws on either side of the back of the tv. Unscrew these 4 and you should be able to get it to slide out. Note this actually took two people on my set, the damn stand didn't want to come off!
Thanks for the fast reply dude.
Our stand came off pretty easy... but I noticed the metal lining up where the screws went in wasnt exactly straight on with the holes so I could imagine there being problems in there.
thetruest 01-20-08, 02:49 AM Ok i just got the TX-42F430S today and have spent a good over an hour of time reading this thread and cataloging all the issues being said about it, so sorry if this has been asked before or if it's even a common general issue (this is my first HDTV), i have not seen it yet.
I have the monitor hooked up to my windows xp PC via an HDMI-DVI cable on HDMI2, and the picture is actually good, like HD wallpaper and such, except that text is awful. I have heard of VGA being blurry for text, and that HDMI to DVI is good, but the text on my screen is surrounded by some kind of solid white against light/whitish backgrounds, like someone took a white highlighter over it. In some cases the text does look blurred or duplicated, i'm not sure. I later noticed that this is actually happening to all colored icons against bright backgrounds, it just wasn't as noticeable. Anyone know about this?
My graphics card is an nvidia geforce 6600 GT, and the monitor is a sep 07 build with 5112_1.2.0 firmware. The HDMI-DVI cable being used worked great for a HannsG 28" LCD (actually it's the cable that came with the monitor, and it is new), without that issue, so i don't think it's the cable.
thanks
Lordnosfer 01-20-08, 04:17 PM Np Moto :)
Truest have you played around with the backlight settings at all to see if that helps? I believe it defaults to backlight at 100 which is horrendously over bright!
thetruest 01-20-08, 04:27 PM Np Moto :)

hey, thanks for the response. Yes, i've tweaked that already, i have it set at 40 and 70 depending on the user, it doesn't change that. It seems like the black text on whiteish backgrounds is subtly semi-duplicated or blurred or something, except that whatever duplication is total white. The end effect on black text on bright is it looks like a white highlighter was roughly taken over it. It gives it bad clarity. I notice this on many bright icons/graphics on a white/light background, but the contrast of black text on white makes that most noticeable. I am pretty sure it's not a calibration issue with the monitor.
When reading text I usualy have to "select all" (ctrl+a on a page) to make the text white on dark background, and i don't get quite the same effect. Really sucks because its straining otherwise and hard to use.
osserpse 01-20-08, 11:39 PM Does anyone get a blue line on the bottom of the screen when using Xbox 360 + HDMI + 1080p?
Purchased one of these yesterday (42") and got the 5112_1.3.0 - Oct 25 build which so far seems to be doing ok. PC looked fine over a VGA cord, but the DVI-HDMI cable induces a "shadow" or slight blurryness that is most noticable on text almost like a bit of overscanning. No amount of playing with powerstrip fixed it either. However sometimes when I rebooted the screen would come up crystal clear. I think it might be related to the ati x1800xt drivers (8.1). Very strange that it works perfect sometimes and not others.
Xbox, and DVD player look fine on it, and so far no lockups or any other trouble. Seems to be a excellent panel considering how cheap it is, especially if you can get over the black levels. My primary use is content off my PC so I don't mind. If anyone had any suggestions about what to do for the slight shadow effect on the DVI-HDMI it would be appreciated. Sounds like the same issue "thetruest" is putting up with.
Outofgum 01-21-08, 11:39 AM Ok, a BB tech came here and declared the TV truly dead - something about needing a new CPU, a part they don't have. He got me a replacement number so now I have a decision to make - get a replacement or a different set from a different manufacturer. I asked him what he thought and he said he'd go for something else. I'm inclined to agree since I'm pissed at Westinghouse over this TV which didn't last 3 months.
So the research begins anew.
There is a settting in Windows XP that changes the way type is rendered. Just right click on the desktop and select properties then look for the dialogue that addresses type rendering (sorry - I'm at work right now and using a mac so I don't know exactly where). You'll want to select the "clear type" option. See if that helps.

I had to replace my set after six months, best buy said as long as they still make the brand of tv you bought you have to get that same model. Basically if it's not exchanged after the first 30 days your stuck.
At least that's what Best Buy told me when I tried to get a different model. Let us know what happens with your set?

I personally don't like this set for many reasons (I summarized them here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=12772622#post12772622) I believe all of the problems I summarized there were common to all of the sets produced, but if you think you can tolerate them, and the chance of it suddenly dying on you (as others have experienced), then perhaps you'll be happy with your purchase and with having a little extra money in your pocket.
..I intend to replace mine with a 46" Samsung or Sony. More money, but if I get crisp text at native res, and fairly good contrast and color for movies, I think I'll be happy.

Lordnosfer 01-21-08, 10:32 PM outofgum if I were you I'd definitely go for a different set. If you can stand a slightly smaller size you can find good deals on 40" 720p and this week 1080p sets at Best Buy. My set went out for "repair" today, I'll be bringing in my PS3 when it comes back to actually test it out at Best Buy. Hopefully it will still have the issue so that I can get the credit and pick up a Samsung! :)

one thing i don't like about the tv.
only get it over hdmi.
geoffp1 01-22-08, 02:00 AM did anyone notice the tx-42f430s is at the #7 spot just below a 42 inch insignia lcd on best buy's best selling lcd category on their website?
also, i read on engadget hd that westinghouse will be updating the tx line in around march. apparently some of the newer tx models are quoting a 6.5 ms response time compared to 8 ms currently.
could you notice a difference? i don't think motion blur is that big of a problem on these sets.

I hear you Burger - I owned my TX for 28 days, before I brought it back to the store. I eventually ended up with a Samsumg LNT-4665F, It has a glossy screen which some people like ( I personally do) while other prefer a matte finish screen. not the 120hz model but the picture looks great. HDTV, Bluray, Xbox 360 via VGA, all inputs accept 1080P. The last two Giants games looked awesome, no pixelation or blurrying. But I guess that all depends on the signal being broadcast. I can wait to watch the superbowl on this one.
Later:)
pdixon01 01-22-08, 11:21 AM I got the TX-47F430S for Christmas and love it. I do not use it for games or as a monitor, just watch TV and Movies and the picture quality is great. I have not seen any of the issues that are listed in this thread. I do have an audio question. I use a 5.1 Sony reciever for audio instead of the TV speakers, which are off. The audio output from the TX-47F430S, from either component, or optical is constant and can not be controlled by adjusting the volume of the TV. I can control it from the 5.1 reciever, but it would be nice to be able to control it with the TV remote like my old TV. Am I missing something?
tonyj66 01-22-08, 06:34 PM Couldn't resist a deal at BB last weekend and took the plunge on a 47". So far, so good. Running Comcast HD via HDMI, Sony NS55P DVD via component, Wii via component, all audio to a Sony 5.1 VSX-D711 receiver. Looks great on HD, fair to good on SD, fair to great on DVD depending on source. I'm seeing the white line on CBS and I think ESPN2? Can't remember. Funky mottled blacks on some movies, but I haven't dialed in the settings yet. So far it seems like hella bang for the buck... :)
It's got the latest October firmware... Thanks to everyone for helping me make a decision. I was lurking for a week or so reading the comments. It was a little scary with some of the negative reviews here, but I've got a Westinghouse PC monitor that I've been really happy with, so I thought I'd give'em a shot. Happy so far (knock on wood...)

Unfortunately not. This was a big gripe of mine too, but I just ended up using the internal speakers for the internal TV tuner. My wife doesn't care, and I don't watch enough TV to really care either. The sound of the TV speakers isn't all that great, but since I couldn't ever get 5.1 out of the optical out of the TV anyway, using the TV speakers is the best compromise I could come up with.

After the tech determined that the TV was dead AND they didn't have the part needed to fix it, he gave me a return number to show to the store which allowed me to either exchange the Westy for a new one, or get something else and pay the difference. I decided to get a Samsung LN-TX4061 which will be about 150 more, but I think its probably worth it. Unfortunately they didn't have one in the store, so I have to wait for them to get one before I can actually buy.
I was originally thinking about just getting a replacement, but as I returned mine I saw that there was another Westy sitting behind the counter in a box. I asked about it and the BB people told me that it was being shipped out for repair.
pdixon01 01-23-08, 12:59 PM I ended up having the audio come out of my insight digital cable box, and programed the cable remote to control the volume through the receiver, which works great.

That's interesting I have a four year service plan through best buy and they wouldn't let me trade up. They did say that this replacement would be for the manufactures warranty and not through best buy's plan as that gets used after the 1 year manufactures warranty is up.
Maybe I got hosed????

The BestBuy warranty is a one time replacement and takes affect after the manufacture's warranty is over. Within the first year, you can get the TV replaced and continue coverage under the extended warranty. I had my Westinghouse replaced this past summer and the replacement tv continued the remaining 3 years worth of coverage whereas if I had reported the problem about a week later I would have been outside the 1-year warranty and would have had to buy another extended warranty once the tv was replaced.
My local BestBuy would have allowed me to purchase another brand as a replacement but they would only credit me for the lowest price my Westinghouse had been sold at which was about $600 less than I had originally paid. I decided to just do an even swap for the newer Westinghouse model (i.e. the TX-42).
osserpse 01-23-08, 10:40 PM Anyone else notice that speakers lose front/rear audio kind've when going from xbox 360 - tv - speakers? I use 2.1, and if I have them hooked up to the xbox directly, I can distinguish between behind me and in front of me, but when it's through the tv, I can't. I kind've miss having speakers for everything easily (just plug into tv and out to speakers the sound goes).
Is there a setting I'm missing? Btw, it's through the RCA L/R out on the side.
cbh0531 01-24-08, 09:09 PM Referring to my earlier posts...
I just realized that 1080P on the PS3 is also not sharp (just like the 360), but is really sharp at 1080i, so I called Best Buy Home Repair and they'll be coming to take a look at it. I was told that they'd either replace it with a new one, or they'd give me a voucher for the amount I paid.

strange, 1080p looks pretty sharp on my set on hdmi. what is your tv build
geoffp1 01-24-08, 09:39 PM here is an interesting problem.
i am trying to output the tv audio from the rca jacks to my klipsch 2.1 speakers. I am using a rca to 1.8mm jack that connects into an aux input on the speakers. the problem is that the audio outputted from the speakers is extremely distorted. if i turn the volume up on the tv, just at 1, the sound is incredibly overdriven and distorted. any ideas? i'd really like to use these speakers, they sound great.

I really like the set, this seems to be the only issue, which to me, is a big one lol....1080i shouldn't look better than 1080P.....if anything it should be the same...

Thanks in advance.
kolyan2k 01-26-08, 12:13 AM I noticed something interesting last night... I don't know if I should just leave it alone or not.
Being a new owner, I was testing the set out and playing around. I put POTC2 BD in my PS3 and started changing a few settings. I noticed that when I turned the "Force 24hz" option on, the set would display HDMI 1 1080p, but it would also say no signal at the top, however I would still be getting a signal. It didn't seem to do this when the signal was 1080i (it switches back and forth during the previews). If I put the 24hz option back to automatic, the problem goes away. Is there a reason that just happened? Does the Westy support 1080p 24hz?
Was this ever solved ? I have the same thing and wondering if I should replace my Westi or call support to get the firmware upgrade ? I have April, 07 built

called Westi and and after a few arguments I was told that i will receive an email with a number that will qualify me to repair or exchange my TV at local Bestbuy store.
Before my warranty expires i wanna get this 1080p/24hz thing straight
Well, I called and the guy told me I should wait 2 weeks, because they just found out that the file on the website is corrupt. Ofcourse, I found this out after I saw earlier in the thread that a 1 was a J, and was able to download the firmware. Fortunately, it just didn't do anything when I tried to run the upgrade, it just sat at an amber light.
When I plugged it back in, it still sat at an amber light, until I held down the power button to force it to reboot. Then it came back on.
I checked the firmware, and aparently I already have the 1.3 firmware (june 07 model), so I don't know if it will help either way...I also had the firmware fail to update. When I attempted it the TV stayed at the amber light and never progressed. So, I suppose I'll wait the two weeks for the update. I've got 5121 running on the September firmware and I was trying to upgrade to the October firmware.
XxProtocolxX 01-26-08, 07:23 PM Hey does anyone know the difference between the 5121 models and the 5112 models?

Mines one of the very first batch (when was that - May/June?) and I was thinking the picture looked a bit weak.
I fiddled with the image (with no calibration devices/images), based of my prior settings, and now have the backlight up a notch and brightness down.
off the top of my head
brightnes 55
contrast 60
hue 48
saturation 50
backlight 40

Seems punchier without blowing colors/whites or light blacks

i use the thx calibration setup. sometimes i think you can fiddle all day with these settings and end up right back where you started. as long as you think it looks good. on the thx calibration, it tells me to put saturation down at 50, but i just think that is way too low and the picture looks washed out. but then again, i am not using a blue filter like it tells me. instead i am just turning down the red and green, which leaves the screen only blue.
What's neat is that I am going to run an HDMI cable from my audio receiver (Onkyo TX-NR905) to get all of the content from the main room on my Westinghouse in my bedroom (since the receiver upconverts everything and passes it through via HDMI). I just built a USB sensor bar for the Wii -- tested, and it works. I am using the service port to power the sensor bar.
How convenient! ;)
By the way, if your service port is "missing", take off the decal which covers it!

unclben 01-27-08, 11:11 AM Brightness 55?!?!?!? Wow man your sets blacks must be white!I agree. I keep brightness low (30-45, depending on source) and contrast high (60-80) to make things look right on this set. I tuned that with the backlight at 30 for night-time viewing (using a 3M calibration DVD). I usually have the backlight at 80-100 during full daylight, but I don't bother recalibrating in those conditions.
TLJester 01-27-08, 11:58 AM Brightness 55?!?!?!? Wow man your sets blacks must be white!
From testing today i found that anything below 45 crushes blacks.
Watching Casino Royal HD there is a scene with 2 men in black suits in a light dinning room. Their suits are mono-black below 45, and barely show any detail 45-50.
Currently at:
Brightness 45
Contrast 65
Hue 55
Saturation 48
Sharpness 50 (does this even do anything - not form my testing anyway?)
Backlight 40
WARM
Dynamic ON (yeah in know)
I am aiming for a bright, colorful picuture rather then a acurately callorbrated one. (So far cartoons (Diago) look a bit weird - dull and dark for some reason)

That's exactly where I have mine.(Depending on the movie, some require lower brightness) You need to reduce sharpness to 0 and turn off the dynamic. I don't know how you can stand the constant changes in brightness:mad: Sharpness just adds artificial edges that can reduce quality.
I keep my Back light at 30 for movie viewing though, 40 is acceptable but 30 IMO is optimal.

I've held off upgrading the firmware as of now. I saw something in this thread about the firmware letting this tv do 1080p/24. I am correct in that? If so, I will go ahead and upgrade the firmware or if not...if it aint broke......

Thats not what I would call an even trade at over 600 hunde more. I was thinking maybe in the $200 to $300 more would be worth it.
TLJester 01-27-08, 10:05 PM So i wasnt real happy with the crushed blacks, and all shadows being pretty dark/black!
After much fiddling heres my latest settings:
Currently at:
Brightness 45
Contrast 85
Saturation 61
Hue 47
Sharpness 0 (From earlier tip - though I still dont see the difference)
Backlight 30
NEUTRAL : R 133, G 123, B 114
Dynamic ON (yeah i still know)
This so far seem to give good contrast, better black, doesnt crush dull/dark tones, has punchy colors without blowing reds. I will trial for a while to see how it holds true (so far cartoons, vivid tv (HD FOOD, HGTV) and HD Robocop3 (had a lot of dark sceens with fully illuminated foreground people shots - and it was on tv!)
Any input most welcome.
One other oberservation - how come when changing ANY setting with DYNAMIC ON, the picture gets ligher AND darker, so if i change a value and +3 its suddenly gets lighter -3 doesnt make it go back to darker.. then +6 might make it go darker again.... all over the place....
Synaptic02 01-28-08, 09:26 AM Hey everyone...I have the 42" and as everyone knows by now, it's beautiful. I don't have Blu-ray or anything like that yet, but I downloaded some of the WMVHD 1080p movies and they look stunning. I'm only getting issues with it when i try to play back DVDs or Divx movies via my PC, hooked up via DVI-HDMI, running 1920x1080p@60Hz from my nVidia 7900 GS KO. I've also tried 24Hz (which it happily accepted) but still the same issue, only worse. It's almost like a scan-line that progresses vertically from bottom to top of the image very slowly, where it appears as though the image has been "severed" at that line and offset slightly to one side. There is no physical "line," only the place where you can see the image "shift." It is most noticable in scenes with plenty of motion, as one would expect, and not visible at all in more still scenes. I hope I've painted a clear enough picture. It seems to me like it's a problem with the video's frame rate, where the video is 29.97 fps or whatever and then through the video card's output of 60Hz and the tv's pulldown to whatever, the math just doesn't work out. Could be (and probably am) way off, but any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Again, no issues with the WMVHD videos, only with DVDs and Divx movies. Thanks everyone.

nascar - I actualy paid $200.00 more then what I paid for the the TX ($1200.00) over the holiday deals that were being offered. Currently the price of the LNT-4665F has gone up quite signficantly since then.:)
Amazon at one point was selling the LNT 4665F for $1400.00 with a 550 Harmony remote during the Xmas holidays.

unless there is something else i should be looking at for ~1200 bux?

Proceed with caution - make sure you check the sellers return policy. Sometimes you get what you pay for.:)
You should check your sellers return policy. I've only had my 47" for a week and it has worked perfectly. This is my second westinghouse, the first was a 37" I bought a year ago. Both have worked flawlessly. At a great price might I add.

I have had 2 Westinghouse's myself. the 37W1 and now the TX-47. If you can find a name brand within $200 to $300 of the Westinghouse I would go with the name brand such as sharp or samsung usually in the 46" range. Ive had my TX-47 for about 5 months now while it is ok I think there is better out there in the semi close price range.

Backlight 30

rmgfronm 01-28-08, 11:11 PM I have spent hours trying to figure this one out in this forum. If it has has been addressed earlier, my apologies. (could I have a PM pointing me to the answer in that case??)
My 42F430S is fed by a Dish VIP722 via component cables (for now). I am experiencing an annoying problem. On several channels (non-HD) where I get a 18:9 aspect program via a standard def feed the 42F430 will not allow me to adjust the displayed aspect ratio to fill the screen with the 18:9 material (not even partially). The best I can get is a 4:3 frame with black bars on either side and the 18:9 material displayed (in the correct ratio) in the 4:3 frame. I would have thought that I can display the 18:9 material via fill. but it won't do it. What am I missing ??
Thanks,
Mike

I am wondering if the SPDIF audio sampling has been fixed to pass through 5.1? I am getting a new 360 with HDMI that I will connect to the TV and use the SPDIF from the TV to my receiver and want 5.1.
If not I have to pick up the stupid microsoft connector.

Afterwords, they removed this feature to remain HDCP-compliant. You can thank the asshats who run Hollywood. Westy is not at fault for this one.
I'm currently running my 360 via component (w/optical audio straight to receiver). A guy on this board showed me that you can take off the plastic covering of the component/audio dongle, which makes it small enough that an HDMI cable will fit next to it. I'll probably try that as soon as I work up the energy, but only because I want upscaled DVD viewing. Gaming over component looks great to me on this TV.

Yea man it's weird, 40 is perfectly fine but once above 40 the streaking lines step in. Not really noticable unless your really close but still a bit worry some. I'd roll back to 2.0 but it's not a problem for me and I like being able to turn off DC.

I had my set hooked up to about 3 different GeForce cards, and didn't really have a problem in windows getting them to go to 1080p resolution using two different DVI-HDMI cables.. I don't have the TX-47F430S anymore, but I think I had to mess with the NVidia settings from the systray icon, and using their cutesy little resolution changing wizard (it actually lets you pick "1080p HDTV" resolution) as opposed to the normal windows "Display Properties->Settings" dialog.
I don't think HDCP compliance has any impact in your situation.. I had 1080p going on 2 GeForce video cards that were *not* HDCP compliant, and one that was. They all worked fine.

Personally I would go with the Samsung. I have seen a lot of banding issues with the Sharp Aquos sets. Does BB let you test the TV before you take it home. If they do download a copy of TVBlink and burn it to a dvd. There are two tests on the disc that help you spot dead/stuck pixels and detect Horizontal banding in the picture

Best of luck

burgerleg 01-30-08, 05:41 PM Nesto1, I don't think you'd want to trust anyone to give you the right firmware.. you could brick your set, because apparently there are a few different versions of the TX-47F430S/TX-42F430S floating around. Your best bet would be to call westinghouse support and see what they would recommend. On their firmware download pages, they have you enter your serial # and exact revision & model.. assuming this is to match you up to the exact firmware you need.

Been to the site, and it only gave me susanII 1.3.0 which I tried and it would not load. I am waiting for a call from them right now with an answer to why it would not take(they claim that it should go from 1.1.0 to 1.3.0 with no problems.
I following the instructions perfectly. Downlaoded firmware that was in a .rar file. Opened .rar file and inside was another .rar file. I then opened this one and extracted the contents straight onto a Cruzer 128 USB drive(freshly formatted) and even tried a generic 1gb USB drive too. Unplugged TV, put drive in, plugged tv, hit the power button, saw westy logo, and 5 seconds later LED was blue and firmware still says 1.1.0
XxProtocolxX 01-30-08, 08:31 PM Been to the site, and it only gave me susanII 1.3.0 which I tried and it would not load. I am waiting for a call from them right now with an answer to why it would not take(they claim that it should go from 1.1.0 to 1.3.0 with no problems.
I following the instructions perfectly. Downlaoded firmware that was in a .rar file. Opened .rar file and inside was another .rar file. geoffp1 01-30-08, 09:26 PM i wonder if the firmware fixes the problem of not being able to control the audio level when using the rca audio out jacks.
2panther 01-30-08, 10:43 PM wow I've missed alot, I'm behind about 30 pages since I last read this thread. Can someone tell me what the lastest firmware fixes? and if it's worth attempting the upgrade?
thanks!
i wonder if the firmware fixes the problem of not being able to control the audio level when using the rca audio out jacks.
This is my exact problem I have with my 360. I need to use headphones and the audio level on the RCA outs is absurd!!! I need to use the game audio controls to lower the output which is trash.
I went to get the latest firmware and the webpage told me there wasn't any. I have an april build of he TX-47.

westinghouse told me that you can plug it into a receiver with rca inputs and manually adjust the volume on the receiver, but that still doesn't clear up the audio level, it still remains overdriven and clipped. i sent them an email back saying that isn't acceptable and it needs to be fixed with a firmware update.
XxProtocolxX 01-31-08, 04:50 PM So I'm the only one who is experiencing the "white static" horizontal lines in blacks when brightness is at 41 and above with the 1.3.0 firmware?
Unplug all connections to your set.
Ok I will give this a try tonight.

Yeah, that's a rediculous answer from them. I've been trying to search for an inline volume control for my headphones but haven't been able to fine one. Mostly on new headphones built in. I want an adapter type.
rogerdiaz 01-31-08, 08:18 PM Hi Protocol, I remember saying you have xbox 360 via PC input. What settings brightness, contrast, etc... do you have it set for games.
Thanks much appreciated.

i have the same build as you, but i haven't tried the 1.3.0 with the issue you are talking about
im still on 1.2.0
my serial/model number is like 4112c04a
geoffp1 01-31-08, 11:00 PM so i'm keeping my 42 inch tx instead of upgrading with my tax refund to another set.
i'll spend the 300 dollars on something else like movies or a surround system.
i still think this set has a good bang for the buck, even if there are some quirks to be worked out with firmware upgrades.
Ok I tried unplugging all my connections, followed instructions to a T, and tried 3 separate USB thumb drives with no change.

I had the same issue. I used the audio output from my digital cable box instead, and programed my cable box remote to have the volume buttons control the receiver. My Insight digital cable box had an optical output for audio, which sounds great.

Keep contrast around 60 and brightness anywhere from 39-45 with the backlight at 60. Stay within those parameters but adjust brightness for each individual game.
Also keep it on the standard reference level, you can keep the detail in blacks with standard.

jacobwest1 02-02-08, 12:44 AM Quick question for you TX owners
I recently picked up a 42" from bestbuy. My First HDTV
I'm noticing some slight but consistent color banding.
That is, certain color shades and gradients are producing small blueish gray visual defects. Almost as if I'm viewing a 16 bit color display. It's preset in almost all skin tones. More dramatic in shaded areas. Red tones seem to have the largest problem.
It's not source problem. It's preset through my HDTV Tuner (Through HDMI)
Through my PC DVI hookup, game systems through AV hookups. Everything.
Most people don't notice it until i point it out and i do sit fairly close to the screen ( 5 feet or so ) however it has become quite a distraction.
I'm wondering if this is common with large LCD displays? Is it a Westinghouse issue or a defect?
Below i've linked to a few screen shots of the effects i'm referring to. There are noticeable degradations in color qualities in certain areas of the gradient. This persist regardless of TV settings, position etc...
http://img179.imageshack.us/img179/3051/picture3531od7.jpg
http://img265.imageshack.us/my.php?image=picture350fq1.jpg
Both images are JPEGs Displayed through my PC. I'll also note a problem in a grayscale gradient. Entire shades of gray are not being "Drawn" correctly.
I'll also mention strange red lines that outline solid black figures. (When pure black transitions into a high contrasting color)
Any advice is appreciated

Take it back and get something else. If you read through most of these posts a lot of peeps say that it's a best buy for the price. Those same peeps go on to report many issues with this set. Trust me I know I was one of them. Sometimes you get what you pay for. Spare yourself from buyers remorse & go with a different brand if you can. There are too many issues with this set that even at these current bargain prices are just not acceptable, my opinion.:)
Best of Luck
rogerdiaz 02-02-08, 08:09 PM Hello...
I am in Durham, NC using Timewarner watching Channel WRAZ FOX 50 HD.
At the very top of the screen there is a horizontal dashed black and white line.
Its only on that HD channel. Is there a something i can do to fix this TV-wise?
Anyone experience this?
This happens to be the superbowl channel.
Thanks,
Roger A. Diaz
rogerdiaz 02-02-08, 08:17 PM This is crazy and silly, but how do I watch over the air HDTV? does this TV allow it? Do I have to completely disconnect the cable box?
Maybe my horizontal dashed line at the top of the viewing area will go away with over the air.
Right now i am using a HD cable box.
Roger
flabioh 02-02-08, 09:29 PM The black and white line is part of the broadcast that is usually hidden by overscanning. It contains other information like Closed Captioning. Since this TV displays everything that the broadcaster sends you see it. If you don't want to see it you have to use overscan or call the broadcaster and them them to adjust their broadcast (good luck with that one).
In order to get over the air broadcasts you would have to plug an antenna directly into your TV. That's pretty much it.
rogerdiaz 02-02-08, 11:47 PM Cool thanks, I understand. I have another question. How come some tv shows are shown at full screen like COPS on FOXHD, but MAD TV is cut off on the sides.
Same thing with Saturday Night Live, it's cut off on the sides. Its an HD NBC but it doesnt fill the whole screen.
Will the superbowl broadcast be cutoff on the sides?
Thanks for any info
joeroyhud 02-03-08, 01:30 AM Some HD programming is 4:3, which is why you're sometimes getting the black bars on the sides. But the Super Bowl will be 16:9 and you'll get the full width.

i get this screen shake sometimes also, not all the time. fixed with power cycling the tv. is this the hdmi handshake issue?
geoffp1 02-05-08, 11:54 PM I posted this before the server went down, so i will post again.
I talked to Westinghouse support today, and they said the firmware update for the TX-42f430s fixes HDMI compatibility and connectivity issues. So it appears to be a good idea to update your television IF your television requires an update which you acquire through the support website. I'll be updating mine.
I asked if it is possible to roll back the update to a previous firmware and he said that he knew nothing about that. I then told him you should find out.
Enjoy your tv's.
cbh0531 02-06-08, 09:16 AM Well my 1080P saga is over. I finally got a replacement Westy from BB. This is a newer build, I had a June 07 build, and now I have an Oct 07 build.
This one is properly calibrated for 1080P, unlike the other one, and now when I change resolutions, the screen doesn't turn green and act like its about to die. 360 looks great, as does the PS3.
This new one has its own minor issues. Before I updated the firmware, I had image rention issues. When something went to black from a brightend screen, I could see the shadow of it. This newer set also has worse black levels. I have to set the brightness to 50 to get the best shadow details. The firmware update fixed the IR issues, and seems to have made the color a little better, while also letting me actually turn off Dynamic contrast.
An another interesting note, the old set supported Full RGB and expanded black levels on HDMI while using PS3 and 360. This new set does not. I have to set them to standard or I lose almost all shadow detail.
All in all, I am now a happy Westy camper. Actually having working 1080P makes a huge difference.

wait so you installed the firmware? or the new firmware came with your new tv?
cbh0531 02-06-08, 05:00 PM I installed it. It came with 1.2.
geoffp1 02-06-08, 05:39 PM I installed it. It came with 1.2.
what do the colors look like now, what is the IR problem, and since you are able to turn off dynamic contrast, how does it look, and do you have the problem of white lines when you turn up your brightness like an earlier poster?
I'm thinking of updating, that is why I want to know.
cbh0531 02-06-08, 06:33 PM The color is seems more natural now, it could just be my mind playing tricks on me. I explained the IR (image retention) problem in my earlier post. I have no white lines on any brightness setting. With Dynamic contrast off, I don't have to deal with games getting lighter and darker everytime I move the camera. It also takes effect on any video setting.
Thats something else I noticed about the new set. On the old one, the only user configurable video setting was "user" mode. On the new one, all of the video settings are customizable. So you could techincally get around having one setting for ALL HDMI ports by customizing a different video mode for each source.

strange, because my TV has the 1.2.0 firmware, but I apparently am able to turn off dynamic contrast
cbh0531 02-06-08, 09:33 PM You can, but it doesn't completely turn off.
I picked this set up a week ago. Transported it in the freezing cold of winter, waited an hour for it to adjust to room temperature, and in a horrifying moment, accidentally turned it on when I plugged it in :P Worked fine though, and I was treated within moments to a gorgeous CBS HD broadcast.
Loving it so far, and I've tried to read as much of this thread as possible, but it's freaking huge. So I have a few questions which hopefully haven't been asked a million times:
The PS3 issue- some people have said that the latest firmware for the 42" fixes the HDMI issues. Is the latest firmware the Oct. 27th one? That is what I have and I just purchased a PS3 online so I'm hoping I'm in the clear for some HD gaming.
Can blurriness and pixelization be caused by a broadcast? The only HD stuff I have right now is local channels- some stuff looks amazing (golf, naturally; hockey looks good, too, along with most major broadcast shows), but I was watching a basketball game and the pixel/blurring was ridiculous- I almost started to laugh over how bad it was. I saw the same thing watching The Big Bang Theory- the part at the end with lots of stuff zooming into the distance really fast looked absolutely horrid. But hockey, a plenty fast sport with quick players and quick camera movements looked fine to me. So I'm trying to figure out if it's the 8ms response time or maybe just a poor broadcast? I think I just need to wait until the PS3 is up and running to find out exactly what the TV can do.
3D Adaptive Comb Filter - what is it? I've turned it on and off and I cannot tell the difference.
The remote; my set doesn't like to "recall" channels. I hit the Recall button, or try to use one of the Favorite buttons and it's almost random. Sometimes it will go to the set channel, sometimes it will go to the channel and revert to the previous one before picture comes in, sometimes nothing at all happens. Anybody else experience this? It seems bizarre.
The first day or two I noticed a strange smell coming from the TV- actually, it's the same smell when I stick my nose right up to my laptops fan vent. I've either adjusted to it or it's disappeared. Not sure if that is normal.
Aside from these issues, the set seems fine:
-I do not seem to have any stuck pixels (glorious luck on my part, I guess)
-Black levels look fine to me (though I am far from videophile and this is my first HD set, one would think I'd notice crappy blacks)
-Wii "HD" looks surprisingly decent. Not 720p-crisp or anything, but it's still pretty good. Games like Geometry Wars Galaxies look fantastic (while Guitar Hero looks like ass).
-HD Broadcasts look awesome. The Office, Law and Order, and numerous other stuff that is broadcast in HD looks almost "too" good. I can't wait for Jericho to start up again next Tuesday.
Anyway, overall I am very pleased with the set, and Best Buy is doing price-matching for the three months after purchase, so hopefully the set will have dropped in price at some places by April and I'll get a little something-something back. But I'm still wary and ready to return the sucker if I encounter a problem I cannot deal with. Can anybody help me with the above questions? As not only an HDTV newbie but an AVS forum newbie, I feel like I will be spending a lot of time here.

Westinghouse said there is no option to roll back the firmware.

Your tv is always going to display in 1080p.
The xbox 360 will output 1080p over component for games, but the HD DVD add on will only be 1080i over component. You need the VGA cables for 1080p with the HD DVD.

From what I've gathered, single pixel lines of color or garbly-gook at an edge on a broadcast is due to the TV's 1:1 pixel mapping. I see a vertical yellow line on NBC HD broadcasts, and garbly stuff at the top of most SD broadcasts. I have no experience with Comcast so I could not say if it is normal. If you are only seeing it on Comcast stuff and not on movies or games, it's probably coming from Comcast and is not a problem with the TV.

You have to tune it differently. I noticed a deeper picture, with better color, and better black levels, once I tuned it anyways. 720P doesn't look quite as sharp as the older one, but the other advances balance it out for me.

apackofmonkeys 02-11-08, 10:59 PM Hey guys I have a question for someone who's been in the same place as me. I bought my TV in September, and it's had all the lockup issues, (at least once a day, usually more), plus this weird HDMI-source stuttering sound issue that's only fixed by a reboot.
My question is, will Best Buy repair or replace my set for free even though it's only under manufacturer warranty and I didn't buy a Best Buy service plan? This is what they have on their website: "We perform and process repairs during the warranty period, as part of a service plan, or for a fee."
I could read this one of two ways. One, it's a list that says they'll repair it if it's under the warranty, or if it's part of a service plan, or for a fee. Or two, it's saying that they'll do it under the warranty period only if you have a service plan, or for a fee. I have read some on this thread, but everyone seems to have gotten the the service plan. Does anyone know what they do if I don't have one?

call Westinghouse. complain about your TV. They with tell you to do some stupid things like turn your TV off, unplug it for several seconds....etc. Do all that (or dont) and call them back in a few days saying that you still have the problem. Now they should tell you that you can replace your TV at local BB store. They will call you back within a week and tell you confirmation number, wait another 2-5 business days (it has to process and go through the system) and go to BB store confirm that they received the number, bring your TV for replacement. (if BB store does not carry the model anymore, they can order it from Westinghouse or they should give you any other brand equally priced). Once you get confirmation number its all up to your Best Buy store, Westinghouse has nothing to do with this.
PS. Westinghouse has great customer support !
Aberrix 02-12-08, 08:49 AM I just picked up my TX-47F430S on Sunday and so far I am really loving it, but I have one concern so far... I have comcast digital cable and am using their hd receiver. Now with the picture zoom set to "standard" I see this slight pink/purple line at the top, however if I zoom to "fill" then it isn't there at all. Is this a problem with my cable/hd receiver (the source) or is there a problem with the TV itself?
Thanks in advance.
I took some pictures last night of the above described abnormalities and attached them. I've noticed this problem on both my Comcast HD receiver (over component) and my xbox running XMBC (over component). I hooked up my Xbox 360 (over component) and did not notice this problem though... I am waiting on some HDMI cables in the mail to test alternate inputs, but regardless this doesn't seem specific to the source (my Comcast HD receiver) but possibly a problem with my component inputs and/or the TV itself... It's as if the image has 'slid' down and the bottom 1/8in of the screen is being repeated at the top. However a few channels don't have this problem but most 90%+ do.
What do you guys think? Does this seem like my TV has a problem? I wouldn't imagine this is normal... Should I call Westinghouse? Is there a way I can simply 'calibrate' my image? it looks like I just need to 'slide' the image up 1/8 in (if that), but I can't find anything in the manual to adjust the image.
Thanks in advance.
cbh0531 02-12-08, 10:30 AM I think this has more to do with the TV not overscanning, and 1:1 pixel mapping. If you select the "fill" option, it will slightly overscan the image and it should go away.

exactly, if I choose "fill" then the abnormalities go away.
I guess my question still is, is this a problem with my tv or something a lot of people experience? can it be corrected? I'd like to think my tv should do 'standard' without these problems and it shouldn't be something that I necessarily have to 'put up with'...

Beefy we have the same model and firmware, can you tell me if when at a brightness of 41 and above you see white horizontal lines in blacks while looking at the screen from a side view. It should be pretty noticeable when you have a completely black image up. I suggest a wide screen DVD, so you have the two black bars on top and bottom - It's easily visible there)
Thanks.

smurph98gt 02-12-08, 04:54 PM Hi guys, I bought my TX42 about a month ago, and have been fairly happy with it.
I recently got my PS3 hooked up via HDMI, and I've been loving it except for a few things. Occasionally the HDMI inputs play dumb. It'll flip over to the HDMI input I set, but then keep telling me "No Input Detected" sometimes I have to cycle back and forth between Component and HDMI to get it to recognize. I had to do this a few times last night before I finally got it to work.
The real problem came today. I turned everything on, and bam "No Input Detected.".. k.. it was working when I turned it all off last night.. what changed? So I fiddle with it, change cables, change inputs, nothing gets it to work. Great. Hook the PS3 up via component, and bam we're back in business. Ok, so I know the PS3 is at least sending some output.
Unplug component. hook HDMI back up, and reset the PS3 to its default video settings. Still nothing. I changed the cables back to component, and I can see things again. The PS3 did recognize that it was HDMI, because it asks about changing the audio to HDMI out. Awesome.
My cable box from TWC has HDMI out (Scientific Atlanta HD8300). I hooked it up to the HDMI cable, tried a few different inputs on the TV, and none of them show up, but again, component does. My brothers going to bring up his HDMI cables and his DVD player that does HDMI out so we can rule out if it's a cable issue or otherwise, but I can't imagine that it is. Both the HDMI cables I used are less than 2 weeks old. The HDMI out on the PS3 was working just fine last night.
I'm stumped. The only thing I can think is something went screwy in the TV and now NONE of the HDMI outputs are working. Has anyone experienced anything similar? Any suggestions for me? I'm still within the 30 days to return to Best Buy, but I'd like to avoid having to replace it as that's a HUGE PITA since I don't have the box anymore.
:(
God I hope it's something easy and stupid you guys can help with.
Thanks all.

I wouldn't recommend that. At least for my version of TV it says there are no updates. At least one person here installed the firmware for the wrong hardware revision and bricked their TV, so I suggest not trying that.

no, i qualify for the update, i checked on the firmware website, and my tv specs qualify for the same update he is about to get.

gcu arbitrary 02-12-08, 09:42 PM I guess my question still is, is this a problem with my tv or something a lot of people experience? can it be corrected?
There is no problem with your tv or your receiver.
The tv station is simply sending you a signal with a purple line on top. Your tv is showing you all of the signal that they're sending you, complete with the purple line on top of it.
You don't usually see this on other tvs because most tvs don't show you the signal that they're sending you. Instead, they blow up the picture slightly so that you see the middle 95% or so of the picture and the edges disappear.
If you want your tv to act like most tvs, just set it to fill. If you want to see the picture as transmitted, leave it on standard.
flabioh 02-12-08, 11:14 PM exactly, if I choose "fill" then the abnormalities go away.

Just for fun... turn off "De-Interlacing" and see if it makes a difference.
I wouldn't recommend that. At least for my version of TV it says there are no updates. At least one person here installed the firmware for the wrong hardware revision and bricked their TV, so I suggest not trying that.
I was one of the unlucky who bricked their TV by applying the incorrect firmware. If there is no update listed on the website when you enter your exact serial and part numbers, then I strongly recommend against attempting to apply the firmware for another part number.
joeroyhud 02-13-08, 12:11 AM I'd like some opinions, please. My TX-42 is a September build with the 5112_1.1.0 firmware. Those of you who have upgraded from 5112_1.1.0 to 5112_1.3.0 -- are you glad you did? Or do you wish you could go back to the old firmware? I'm trying to decide whether to take the plunge.
wxman08844 02-13-08, 08:23 AM Ok I will give this a try tonight.
Nesto, I have the exact same problem. I have Sept 2007 build and the v1.2 firmware, trying to "upgrade" to v1.3. I can see the TV's USB port "reading" my flash device with the extracted software. I tried two flash devices, but the update just will not load. Anyone have any ideas?
cbh0531 02-13-08, 09:31 AM Make sure you extract the *.img file, AND the other file onto the flash drive. Don't unzip the other file after you extract it from the rar file, just put it on the flash drive.

XxProtocolxX 02-13-08, 11:20 AM Well anyone with the 5112_1.2.0 should update. You can completely shut off dynamic contrast.
Since we don't have a list of what the update does exactly that's all I can tell you that i've noticed.
I think it lets you adjust every picture setting and not just "User" as well (or was that an earlier one?). But yeah, a complete list would be nice.
Does anybody's remote have issues? The Recall and Favorites buttons don't always work properly. I don't know if it's the TV or the remote...

Have you (or anyone) noticed any glitches since upgrading? My set is working fine, and I can certainly adjust my dynamic contrast (don't know if the off setting is off completely, but I don't notice a problem). It's not unusual for a firmware upgrade to screw up a functioning system -- I like having the latest version, but that's me -- my problem is I can't seem to get the upgrade to load! Suggestions on that front are welcome (I'm fairly computer literate, so I can't imagine what the problem is -- the flash drive is definately detected by the TV, but it doesn't load).

What do you mean "completely shut off dynamic contrast??" I have firmware version 5110_1.1.0, Apr 13, '07 :)
I have thought about upgrading but *knock on wood* have not had any real issues. I do recall even after turning off dynamic contrast, there are some strange things that still happen, so the new firmware fixes this?
What's the process that needs to be done to get the latest firmware? I posted in this thread a while ago, but have not been reading it much lately. Thanks.
Can anyone email the 1.3 firmware to me? I have spent endless time on the westinghouse support site typing in my serial trying to get it after I have registered it and it keeps saying it's not in their database.

yeah. we need list of updates for different firmware, and list of changes to different versions of TX47.
Ya this is strange, I went to the westy support site, inputted the serial # off the back of the tv and registered it, and it's saying there's no firmware available..?
I haven't seen this posted yet, but have the firmware updates had any significant effects for those who have upgraded? I have some flickering from time to time w/ my ps3, and some hdmi dropouts rarely, and am debating if the upgrade is worth it. I think I might have the original firmware. Thanks

I've only owned mine for a couple days now... I bought the TX-47F430S and I have to say that anything 'comparable' (in size + 1080p) is anywhere from $700-$1000+ more in price and I just don't think that's justifiable for me personally. Definitely an awesome 'bang for your buck', well worth the money, awesome picture quality. Try and find another 1080p 47" w/ 4 HDMI connections and compare the prices.... So far I completely love my 47" Westy!
Apparently the newest firmware fixes the HDMI/PS3 issue. My TV came with the latest firmware and my PS3 and cables and junk arrives over the next few days, so I'm hoping that is true.
I'm very much considering getting this TV from my local BB. As you are all current owners of the model, what do you think of it? Is it a good buy?
So far, yes. I'm pretty satisfied. Just make sure you read up on it and know that any of the little issues it has won't ruin your experience (all HDMI ports on one hub, for example). Also try to make sure the TV comes with the latest firmware. I got mine from BB about two weeks ago and it had the latest, so I think you'd be fine.
For the price, it can't really be beat. But if your price range extends a couple hundred bucks, you might want to compare a few other models first.

Well, I just bought a 37" Sony RPLCD 2 weeks ago, so I can still return it. The additional fundage needed to get the Westy is about 250 more as I have a coupon. I know that 250 is getting me 5 more inches, 1080P rather than 720P, 2 more HDMI ports (yeah, hubbed....), and a flat panel should I ever want to wall mount it. I'll also not have to worry about any bulbs in the future.
My real question is how is the PQ on this when compared to a 37" RPLCD. I couldn't find a lot of info on the Sony, but it does have a 10-bit panel, though I don't know it's contrast ratio or response time. Thanks!!!

I am not familiar with the Sony you have, but just some friendly advice - Do yourself a favor and compare other LCD TV's before you drop your money on the TX. Trust me I had one and returned it. It had many of the same issues reported here, just plain unacceptable - even at the bargain price this LCD is going for .

Exactly what is on the website. Download, unzip to flash drive, unplug tv, plug in flash, plug in tv. Although the website says you need to push power, doing so does nothing. Rather, I can see the flash being "read" by the tv (flash drive blinks), then the westinghouse screen logo comes on, then the tv returns to the channel it was on, but the firmware is not upgraded. Thanks.

Well, even before looking in person, I see their prices online. The competition costs around $500 more when looking for something 40-42" with 1080P. That's about 50% more than the Westy. Of course I'll go see them in person before dropping the money, but that's a lot of extra premium if you ask me.

Aside from the hubbed HDMI and my issues with the remote, I haven't encountered any of the issues. Maybe the newest firmware has fixed them or you had a bum set or something, but I'm not sure what problems you had that were unacceptable. Then again, as I've said, this is my first set so I don't have much to compare it to. I'm also interested in what TV in the TX's price range you would recommend, then. If there is a better bargain/TV at this price I'd be very interested in testing it out.
I know that 250 is getting me 5 more inches, 1080P rather than 720P, 2 more HDMI ports (yeah, hubbed....), and a flat panel should I ever want to wall mount it. I'll also not have to worry about any bulbs in the future.
Personally, I think that's a pretty good amount of improvements for $250 particularly the resolution increase (which doesn't matter too much at the moment but is a nice 'future-proof' precaution) and not changing bulbs. But you should know that the TX has a vertical spine in the middle of its back for all the cables, so the panel is NOT going to sit flush up against the wall if you mount it, it will sit a couple of inches out (http://www.gearlog.com/images/large-lcd-tvs-spine-view.jpg) I've seen reviews on Amazon complaining that they "can't" mount it because of this, so there's a little FYI.
Couldn't tell you about how your Sony and this compares in PQ, though. I'd wager that the Sony would look a little better, but I've heard all kinds of different things from people that can't tell the PQ difference from high-end and low-end TVs, or 720 to 1080p, so I think it really depends on your eyes, how far you sit, etc. When I watch stuff on the Westy, I can "imagine" it looking better, but it does not look bad by any stretch of the imagination. Again, all my opinion so who really knows. :) I seem to have dodged a couple of bullets considering the issues some people are having.
Forgot to mention, of course ixpagan is correct in that you should always compare before you buy :P Don't just go in and proclaim "Westinghouse, I choose you!" You might find something you prefer, or a better deal, or whatever. That fact that so many people HAVE had issues with this set means you should be wary, even though there is always going to be a group of people that feel a certain set is terrible. I've looked at many of these threads and there seems to be no magic TV that everyone loves and has no problem with.
ixpagan 02-13-08, 04:24 PM Aside from the hubbed HDMI and my issues with the remote, I haven't encountered any of the issues.
When I watch stuff on the West, I can "imagine" it looking better, but it does not look bad by any stretch of the imagination. Again, all my opinion so who really knows. :) I seem to have dodged a couple of bullets considering the issues some people are having.
Martin,
The issues experienced with my TX were constant lockups, the remote would not respond. Popping noise, not sure where that was coming from. Sometimes I would turn it on and all I would get is the "W" logo, nothing else. At the time Westinghouse was useless. They recommended that I cycle the power on the unit - disconnect the power cable every once in a while, Sometimes it worked sometimes it didnt. Right now I don't see anything in this price range that's worth picking up. Prices are going down - my recommendation would be is to be patient. When I picked up the TX47 I got it at a great price and was happy with the initial performance until the issues started. Eventually I ended up with a Samsung LNT 4665F as a replacement which I am very happy with and would recommend. In the end I ended up paying about $200.00 more for the Samsung and that's getting a super deal on Amazon over the Xmas holidays. I think it was worth the money. I checked today's prices on my set and prices are now in the 1600.00 to 1900.00 price range online, way over what I paid for it. If I were to do it over. I would have waited another year. I don't remember having to go through this much trouble when buying CRT TVs.
Capnboost 02-13-08, 04:58 PM Well, I just bought a 37" Sony RPLCD 2 weeks ago, so I can still return it.
Thanks!!!
I have to say that after having a TX42 die after 2 days, playing the warranty game for 4 weeks, I finally have a new TX42 on my wall, and I can't fault the PQ for the fact that I originally got a lemon. In the 4 weeks it took to get a new TX from Westinghouse, I succumbed to the urge to get another Flat Panel for my main room. Comparing the PQ from the TX to my Sharp Aquos...the PQ is very close. The TX blacks aren't quite as black, but the clarity is the same. The trick to owning all this slick technology is not getting caught up with whether a Pixel is dead, whether some minor banding is happening, and just enjoying the experience of a flat, crisp, bright, clear image...after all, there's always audio to worry about:)

FrostyMelon 02-13-08, 06:13 PM I am in the same boat as others with the flash drive and firmware update. I've tried five different drives (Crucial, Kingston, SanCruz, Micron, and I don't remember what the other is...named rubbed off)...none work. I have the same issues - TV can read the drive, light blinks on thumbdrive, but it goes to the 'W' screen and then straight to 'no input' (I have all cables unplugged). Followed directions on Westy website, even called them (which was pointless). The guy at Westy said to plug the USB cable from laptop into USB slot on TV...? Huh? How is that going to work?
Damn...firmware update on the Magnavox we have is nice n' easy - load file to thumb drive, plug into back of TV, go into menu and click 'update software'...Westinghouse did things screwy with theirs.
wxman08844 02-13-08, 07:43 PM Firmware Upgrade Worked! Following the advice of poster on this board, I purchased the san disk cruzer (other flash drives did not work). I bought the 2 Gig unit ($25 at circuit city). I did NOT format the drive as there appeared to be installed software on board, but it definitely worked! Now to see if my set works -- scanning channels at the moment.

Right now I notice no changes, BUT I was only one update behind the most current. Immediately, after the update I thought I noticed some degradation in the picture, but I'm now thinking it's my imagination. Anyone else notice any decrease in picture quality? By the way, I really like this TV, getting the firmware on was my only "problem." The set has performed flawlessly for the week that I've owned it.
kolyan2k 02-13-08, 09:09 PM I am on my second TX47 and while everything works fine (almost everything), I did notice a decreased picture quality....(again maybe it is also my imagination)....I already have an "exchange number" from Westy.......I am wondering if BestBuy will let me take another brand instead. I will hold on to this Westy for another week and then maybe see what options I have in terms of exchanging.
ps. last time I was at BB. they has 46'' or 47'' latest Samsung LCD. new is $2,300 or something, and open box was only $1,700. it would have been nice to get that instead.

Did you notice decreased picture quality AFTER the firmware upgrade, or just on your second set?

on the second set which was the "second" version of TX47 and had newer firmware. I now upgraded the firmware to latest and will see if there are any changes.
funkiejack 02-13-08, 10:57 PM +1 to a Sandisk for the FW upgrade
just wanted to chime in..
got the TX47 at Bestbuy- came with the Sept 07 1.2 version, had no issues 'cept the Dynamic Contrast not turning off and the Image Retention issue (which i think is related to the dyn contrast problem). Wii and 360 connected via component, standard DVD player on S-Video, PC (8800gt Video Card, WinXP) connected via VGA at 1920x1080.
Adjusted the settings, the TV looked great, 1 dead pixel
Problems arise...
Watched Bourne Supremacy in 720p divx via the PC (now connected via Monoprice DVI-HDMI) and noticed a lot of the IR issues in the initial dark scenes. Using the PC and moving a window around the desktop you can see the Dynamic Contrast changing on the background image even when I had it turned off. No difference turned on/off.
Decided to upgrade using a Sandisk 256Mb drive, formatted, unplugged everything, successful!
PC connected via a Monoprice DVI-HDMI cable. Dynamic Contrast got a LOT better, no more IR issues. still see the background changing wiht the DC set to off but there is a difference between ON/OFF now. Can't see it in movies or anything.
New Problem
HDMI - DVI - PC seems to lose sync everytime I have the TV in energy saver mode and turn off tv and turn back on. Need to restart the PC. Works fine in regular mode but still loses sync occassionally. Not too bad, just leaving the TV on regular power mode.
Conclusion:
For the price I paid... (i bought it at bestbuy) it's a great TV. Awesome solution for games/pc/TV on a budget. Purchased 3 year squaretrade warranty w/ 30% off.
Last question:
anyone know how many hardware revisions there are? i see 2.. or 3? different video processors? which one do I have?
mnksauce 02-13-08, 11:48 PM Does anyone get the firmware "42 LPL LX v.1.2.0.rar" when they try and update their panel? i have a 42 incher.

EDIT, I just read about the difference in hardware. Seeing how I have one of the earliest builds should i just not bother updating? It seems that the only person that had any info on this was imit8, but his post wasn't conclusive as to what we, the early build owners, are to do about updates. Any suggestions?

I think the "build" also refers to the firmware -- when I updated to v.1.3, I went from "sept 2007 build" to oct 2007 build", interesting.

I'm in the same boat as you with the same firmware. I'm GUESSING here that those with this firmware likely have one of the early panel/video processor configurations and perhaps they have no firmware for these. It seems like Westy has been playing musical panels/processors and those with different firmware likely have a different video processor (that perhaps had alot of bugs?), and that's why there is different firmware available.
On my model, when I turn of Dynamic contrast, it appears to in fact turn off. My guess is we got one of the early configurations where perhaps the vid processor has fewer bugs (at least that's what I'm hoping). Fortunately I have only had 1 lockup since last May, and some slight syncing issues w/ the ps3 *knock on wood*. I haven't experienced the mess of problems others have (I don't use the built in tuner or the built in speakers though).

I picked the TX-42 up on Tuesday, calibrated it and then updated the firmware. I thought I noticed some picture degradation. Then, I noticed that it had reset my calibration to factory. Once I reset everything to the settings I got after calibrating, the picture was back to looking good.

Same here. The picture is fine after upgrading the firmware. I really love this TV. I think it has one of the best overall pictures regardless of price -- my previous set was a Sony WEGA HDTV tube set (heavy as all hell), so I'm comparing the Westy to an industry standard. While the picture may have some technical flaws (eg black scenes), the general experience is WOW -- easily comparable to high end Samsungs LCDS, just go to BB and compare with an open mind.

You know, I have noticed a popping sound now and then. I have no idea what it was, but I've got an electric heater and all kinds of junk in my room so I wasn't even sure it was the TV... any hypothesis about what it could be?
How long did your set last before these issues started to come up? I've had mine two weeks, I'm hoping stuff doesn't come up, but I've got a 4 year warranty from Best Buy so I guess it doesn't matter- if something goes wrong I'll get it fixed or replaced.
Also, you said you had the 47" right? I wonder if those lockup problems are restricted to it and the 42" performs better?

I got my PS3 last night and hooked it up via HDMI. Everything works GREAT. One annoying-ish thing is that when the PS3 changes resolutions (1080p in the menu to 720p for a game) the little info box pops up for a few seconds. Unnecessary, I think, but whatever.
Was playing Orange Box and noticed it has a strange little border on the right and bottom edge- it looks like it occurs when the game puts some kind of filter over what's going on on-screen (zooming in with a scope, etc.) so I'm guessing that it's a 1:1 pixel mapping thing, since it didn't happen with a Blu-Ray movie. *shrug* Setting the picture to Fill obviously fixes this, but like everybody else I wish it would overscan less or let us set how much it zooms in. But after reading about so many people with PS3 problems, I'm extremely happy everything is working. Watching Spiderman 3 on Blu-Ray confirmed that the speedy-shot-pixelization is in fact the broadcasts coming from the TV, because all the fast motion and shots in the movie looked fine. I'm actually quite impressed with how well the set handles speedy stuff when coming from a decent source.
I've finally noticed some banding- the only place I can see it is on the PS3's menu. The background color sort of fades in and out, and for about 3 seconds during that fade I can see banding. However, it goes away after that even though the colors in the background don't look that different. Strange, but glad this is the only time I've seen it.
Beefy we have the same model and firmware, can you tell me if when at a brightness of 41 and above you see white horizontal lines in blacks while looking at the screen from a side view. It should be pretty noticeable when you have a completely black image up. I suggest a wide screen DVD, so you have the two black bars on top and bottom - It's easily visible there)
Thanks.
I took a look at my set with the brightness at 45 last night. Did not see any white lines in black.

It sounds like it's the hardware, but I'm not sure at all. For me, it's just one pop every couple of days. Don't know if it is more or less frequent with anybody else.

The TV isn't banding, the XMB background is designed to look that way. Each color does it.
irshliquor 02-14-08, 03:14 PM So, I've got the April 13, 2007 build TV with 5110_1.1.0 software installed. Westinghouse website says no available updates.

It's designed to go from smooth color fades to fugly ones for a few seconds? I don't understand. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad to hear it, because that means I haven't seen any banding at all so far, but I don't get how/why the background does that.

I had the TX47 for two weeks before the issues started. I owned the unit for 28 days before I had enough and decided to return it. Use TVblink to check for banding and dead pixels http://www.tvblink.com/

ixpagan 02-14-08, 04:18 PM We have been having problems with our elevators at work for years now. Every morning you can hear almost everyone waiting for the elevators complaining on how slow they are and how they are constantly breaking down. I just had to chuckle, the people in the elevator must of thought I was nuts.:) I just wanted to share that.
Peace

Popping comes out of the speakers at random intervals but quite often at that, Much more noticable when you are using it as a PC monitor and not using the speakers from the TV. Seems to be something with the HDMI as I dont believe it happens on any of the other inputs. Was hoping but not holding my breath that firmware may fix my one major annoyance with this TV. I now just hit the mute button so I can not hear it while using as a PC monitor.
I just purchased the TX-42F430S earlier this week. I have the 1.3 firmware with an Oct. 2007 build date. I haven't witnessed most of the problems listed here. However, I have ran across a different problem. I wanted to see if anyone else had seen anything on this issue:
Basically, whenever I hook something up through my HDMI ports, I can't get the sound to export via the optical audio cord to my receiver. If I switch to internal audio, everything is fine. If I got to component or composite inputs, it will output externally as well. But for some reason, it doesn't like to output with the HDMI inputs.
I have two HDMI cables plugged in. One is going to my Motorola cable box and the other to my Toshiba A2 HDDVD player. Neither one has sound unless I switch back to internal sound. Very bizarre. Has anyone else witnessed this problem?

I do believe you are experiencing the HDMI HDCP spec. I believe the early TX-47 build was the only one that allowed this until they fixed it with newer firmware. What you have happening is by design and you can thank all the movie and TV studios for all this.

Its intentional to make it so that you can't send out an audio signal to your receiver? Is there a way around that? It seems to defeat the whole purpose of a unified audio output.
Aberrix 02-15-08, 09:03 AM Anyone else out there with a Toshiba SD-V592 DVD/VCR combo player? I am hooking mine up to my TX-47F430S via HDMI and just get really horribly purple/yellow colors and a funky resolution. I swapped a new 1.3a cat2 HDMI cable in and still the same thing. It's either the player or my TV, I don't have any other HDMI devices currently so I can't rule either out at this time... just curious if anyone else had the same device/problem? I hope its not my TV :/

I heard the/a pop last night, it definitely didn't come from the speakers- I had it muted; also had an NBC broadcast on.
Also, I had my first experience with the HDMI ports playing dumb. When switching between TV and HDMI, it kept giving me a "No Signal Detected." Hitting the Input button on the remote and selecting the specific HDMI port worked fine. I'm coming to the conclusion that this remote just plain sucks. Then again, it may be the TV, but I do not have any kind of other/universal remote to test this theory on.
kolyan2k 02-16-08, 01:51 PM ok. as i already said, I exchanged TX47 built1 to TX47 built2 firmware 1.3 because it didn't support 1080p/24hz. I noticed decreased picture quality...... today i can say 2 things for sure: 1. looking at TV from an angle changes the picture, and it becomes too bright and noisy 2. in PS3 i noticed at the bottom of the screen, sometimes a line is flickering.
i want to exchange it again
I have a TX-47F430S. I registered on the westinghouse site and it says there is no firmware available. I purchsed in November of 07. It is currently on 5110_1.1.0. Built on April 13 2007. Is there no update for this TV?

What exactly would be the cause of it? Just the way the TV is reading the info from the system? Or maybe it's a problem with HDMI devices across the board?
XxProtocolxX 02-17-08, 01:16 PM ok. as i already said, I exchanged TX47 built1 to TX47 built2 firmware 1.3 because it didn't support 1080p/24hz. I noticed decreased picture quality...... today i can say 2 things for sure: 1. looking at TV from an angle changes the picture, and it becomes too bright and noisy 2. in PS3 i noticed at the bottom of the screen, sometimes a line is flickering.
i want to exchange it again
So you notice the noise at an angle too huh. It's in the blacks right?
It's the new firmware, I never had this with 1.2.0
osserpse 02-17-08, 05:03 PM Anyone know why audio going through the tv to external speakers through the dual rca sounds bad? As in loses definition?
When my 360 is hooked up to it via hdmi, I can't really differentiate between sounds infront of and behind me when I have the speakers hooked to the tv. When I have the speakers hooked directly to the 360, sound quality is improved immensely and I can get front/rear sound differentiation.
I'm using 2.1 speakers, btw. Headphones also make this very apparent.
TurkeySandwich 02-17-08, 06:24 PM Edit - After being unplugged for a about an hour I gave it another shot and it came back with the updated firmware. Such a big relief.
I had the October build, with firmware 1.1 installed.
Part number: TW-51122-c042A
Westinghouse's site gave me SusanII_v1.3.0_20071026.rar as the newest version of the firmware.
I unrared the file on to a freshly formatted usb drive, unhooked all cables including the power, inserted the usb drive into the tv, plugged the cable back in and powered on the tv. The screen remained blank, the indicator light started as amber, switched to blinking blue for a few moments, and then switched to solid blue. After a few moments I unplugged the usb drive and attempted to power off/on the TV and got absolutely nothing.
I tried to unplug the tv for a few minutes and plug it back in, but with no success.

we are probably talking about different things. that problem came with built2 not the firmware upgrade from 1.2 to 1.3. the problem is that from angles the picture looks completely different, too much white.
Hi everyone, i'm very sorry to switch a topic or anything, but I can't seem to find which firmware allows 5.1 output to passthrough the tv's S/PDIF connection...i got it a month ago, firmware 1.2.0...am I out of the 5.1 passthrough party with this firmware?
hi all,
after having a 46 plasma (philips) konk out on me i'm back in the westinghouse fold with the 42 tx.
i used to own an lvm 42 set.
the new set is beautiful, the only thing i remember from the first one was that the sound had much more oomph. this new one sounds like it's missing the sub which i cannot seem to turn on. maybe left over from when they used to put a sub in the tv?
