The 360 only upconverts dvds to 1080p via hdmi or vga if you are using the component it will do 480p but thats it I believe. If you have an older 360 it won't have the hdmi output so you will either have to go vga or do the ebay shuffle.
later,
Neal

I'm not trying to upconvert. I'm perfectly fine with playing regular DVDs at 480p. BUT the xbox will not output a DVD video signal to this TV. 480p DVD output works PERFECTLY fine on my HP 32" via component cable.

Any ideas for a cause?

Sorry if this has been mentioned before but i couldnt see it anywhere. I bought a TX-47F430S in september online from bb. Over the last few months I notice a distinct ghost of the Input box in the upper right corner of the screen and the no input signal box in the middle top of the screen. Is this something that can be fixed or should I have a technician come in to look at it. Also, is this covered under the warranty or will i have a tough time with it? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Your still within the year warranty so anything you need done to it should be covered. Never really heard of this issue before so hard to say if there is something wrong or not. If everything works fine I don't know what to tell you, unless you see this "ghost" input box all the time.

Definitely call Westinghouse or Best Buy up as quick as possible and explain your problem before you have had it for a year. I'd probably call Best Buy first and try for a replacement or money back/exchange for another TV rather than possibly betting a refurbished or your current one "fixed"

Ditto, call ASAP. It takes a while to get it all worked out. I'm on day 11 of the 7-10 business days it was supposed to take to get my exchange authorization, but when I called today, they said it didn't get "filed" until 3 days after I gave them all the info, so the 7-10 days only counts from that day. So they told me to wait even longer, then call back. I can't wait to get my store credit so I can get a 52" Samsung 550 :D and drop this Westinghouse POS. I convinced my parents to go with the 40" 550 and its image quality is leaps and bounds above the Westinghouse. Add another foot to that and I'll have one sweet TV.

Playing dvd's. I'm using an Xbox 360 connected via component cable. I've tried every setting from 480i to 1080p and I get AUDIO but no VIDEO from DVDs. I occasionally get a purple screen for about 10 seconds the NO SIGNAL message.

I have the same issue but mine usually comes on gradually and not on every DVD. A movie will play fine for 15 mins then start cutting out gradually eventually becoming unwatchable. The image blinks quickly until it completely loses sync and resets with the little box saying it's 480i. Team America World Police is the only live action DVD that's done it so far. Animated movies such as The Simpsons Movie, Futurama Movie, and Appleseed all have this problem. Animatrix does not have this problem. I guess it's either an upscale problem or a framerate sync issue but I don't know anything about it. I haven't tried anything but component because I am screwed on the no audio throughput-deal as my receiver is a digital receiver pre-hdmi. I guess I can try VGA to my TV and use the component fiber optic to go to my receiver. If anyone has any comments or help I'm a little desperate to fix this. I really love the picture on this TV and I do not want to give it up for this issue.

I don't know if anyone else is getting this, but I just noticed a little burn in of the input display for "HDMI 1". Right now it's only noticeable with certain colors. Anyone else getting similar issues?

I've got my PC connected on that input, and I suppose it might have crashed and lost signal, but doesn't this TV fall asleep after a while? And I wouldn't think it would happen enough to actually burn in the screen

I remember people mentioning stuff like that sticking around sometimes, but then going away (someone with a better memory or a person who experienced this, please correct me) eventually.

I was under the impression that one of the benefits of LCD over plasma was not having to worry about burn in?

LCD's do not get burn in. It maybe a "stuck pixel"(LCD) or many of them if you see the same image like it is "burned" in. It should go away if you unplug the TV for several hours at least from power and then plug it back in. This allows everything to lose power/all capacitors to discharge and then hopefully the stuck LCD's should go back to normal. If that doesn't correct it then defiantly try to take it back or get it serviced.

LCDs do not "burn in" but they can have "image persistence." I've seen it happen a hundred times before. Here is some quick info about it and common methods to prevent and fix it:

I am having the same issue with the "image retention." The no input signal box is definetly there. I have had it setup to turn off the TV after 5 minutes when no signal is present so I am not sure why I am having this problem. Got the three year warrenty from Best Buy so I'm not worried about it. It is puzzling though that there is a few of us that are starting to get this. I bought this TV 11 months ago.

The toslink does not work on the set. It is set to mixed and I checked my reciever and it works fine.

I tried to update the software and it did not like my usb drive. It would do nothing.

And now I have no audio on hdmi #1 but all the other 3 work.

I have the TX-42F430s. Lately, when I try playing DVDs on anything hooked up to the component jacks (either a DVD player or a PlayStation 2) the disc's picture will get all jumbled, like there's a power surge or something. What could have caused this to start happening? It started after I got a Nintendo Wii hooked up into the other jack, but even if I don't have it hooked up it does this. Any advice?

note: I have the Sept 2007 firmware, I can't seem to find a flash drive to update it.

Thanks!

FOr some reason, I can't get a really good picture on my own. Too much greens, too much Blues, too little reds, etc. esp. while watching sportscenter in HD.

Can anyone point me in the direction of some good calibration settings or provide me a site where I can calibrate the TX47 myself?

thanks

Hello,

I have the TX-42F430S Westinghouse that others are having "burn in" problems with.

I used to have another 42" Westinghouse monitor (no tuner) that NEVER had this problem. It's funny that this model (maybe others) have such a problem.

Is the "burn in" permanent?

When I watch a film etc. on DVD / HD DVD, etc., the burn in from any text the player generates or from things in the movie content etc. does create the burn in as members have shown here. When I look at the burn in spots after the player stops on the mostly blank (dark) screen all of the text boxes are clearly there in ghost like fashion. But if I turn off the DVD player when the Westinghouse is still on, all of the "burn in" images instantly go away. It is as if the Westinghouse is buffering data from the HD DVD player -- and when the player loses the connection or power is stopped, the Westinghouse is as good as new. The unit is only a few days old, so maybe over time this "burn in" won't disappear as quickly.

If others could check this out, this would be great. At least it might mean that the panel isn't suffering damage from burn in . . . but there is something wrong when an image is retained regardless of why or how.

Please let me know how it works on your end.

Thanks!

Do you have the latest firmware already or have you updated to the latest? Many report that after doing the update the "ghosting" goes away.

Thanks again . . .

My current firmware is 5112_1.20. The unit was built on Sept. 7, 2007.

Trying to get firmware support from Westinghouse is bad. Their site doesn't allow me to download -- even after registering with the serial! The site doesn't tell me if I have the latest software or not when using the serial. On top of that, Westinghouse support don't even have any info. on hand to let customers know what the latest version is.

LINK (http://207.38.27.164/firmware/SW/SusanII_v1.3.0_20071026.rar)

Should give you a direct download from there.

Here's the instructions given when you get to the download page.

Firmware Update Instructions
USB Firmware Update Procedure

The purpose of updating the firmware on your Westinghouse TV is to enhance your TV viewing experience with added features or minor bug fixes or both.

You will need:
1. A Westinghouse TV or monitor with a USB service port.
2. A 64MB or larger USB thumb drive.
3. A computer with either Microsoft Windows 2000 or Microsoft Windows XP as the operating system.

Step One: Format Your USB Thumb Drive

Your USB thumb drive must be formatted in FAT32 to be detected. Formatting it will overwrite all information stored on the drive, so be sure your files are backed up

1. Insert the USB thumb drive into your computer.
2. Right click on the Removable Disk icon.
3. From the menu, select Format.

4. Under File System, select FAT32.
5. Select Start to begin formatting.

6. Be sure all data on the thumb drive is backed up before you click OK.

Step Two: Download Your New Firmware

If you haven’t already done so, go to www.wde.com under the Support menu to download the latest firmware for your Westinghouse TV or monitor.

If you don’t already have Adobe Reader and/or WinRAR software on your computer, you can download them by clicking each icon from the right corner underneath the Download Firmware icon.

If you download Adobe Reader and/or WinRAR, run the application for installation into your Operating System.

Once it’s installed, click the Download Firmware icon from Westinghouse Support menu and save it to your system for transfer to the USB drive. Please insert the USB drive into your system.

Please follow these step-by-step instructions exactly. Extract (unzip) the WinRAR firmware file in your system by simply double clicking the downloaded file. Then click the Extract To icon and choose the destination path. Highlight the drive that you have designated as your USB drive, then click Enter. File will automatically transfer from the system to USB drive.

Please double check and make sure the firmware software is extracted (unzipped) in the USB drive.

Step Three: Install Your New Firmware onto Your TV

Remove the USB thumb drive from your computer and take it over to your Westinghouse TV.

1. With the power cord removed from the back of your Westinghouse TV, insert the USB thumb drive into the service port.

2. Plug the power cord into both the back of the TV and the wall outlet.

3. Press the Power/On button on the TV to begin your firmware update.

4. The status will be seen on your screen while the firmware is updating.
5. The Power LED indicator will turn to amber. After 30 seconds, it will begin to blink. After 3 minutes, it will turn blue.
6. Once the Power LED turns blue, your firmware upgrade is complete. Remove the USB flash drive.
7. Turn your TV off, then turn it back on to enjoy your new Westinghouse TV firmware.

If you have any questions or problems with downloading, or are not comfortable downloading firmware and need assistance, please call our friendly Customer Support at 1-866-287-5555.

Some flash drives may not work properly with this firmware upgrade.

Windows Vista, XP and/or 2000 users only.

Thanks Carsfanatic.

I managed to try to get the update from Westinghouse -- and with luck and persistence I got the 1.30 firmware update from Oct. 2007.

You are brilliant! I did the update and the ghosting seems to have gone away. I see no tell-tale signs from doing the quick tests that always give the burn in effect ... and it appears gone after the update. Before getting too excited, I will check again tonight, after dark, to see if the trick worked when testing in a fully darkened room.

Those who have similar problems with "burn in" might want to check out for the latest update if you don't have it.

Thanks once again!!!

I did the update before I even actually set my TV up when I first got it home so now I see all these people with these ghosting and other weird problems and have never had these problems that the firmware seemed to fix for me I guess. I always suggest doing any updates for anything right when you get it then if there's any problems you can take it right back and then just tell them it doesn't work or whatever the problem was and should be no problem since you just got it.

ANywhere else I can find a calibration disc online to calibrate myself?

Now that I think about it, red and colors look good when I play 360 and such just not when I watch TV.

DO you think it might just be the cable box? Comcast BTW scientfic atlantic HD DVR box

Don't know that box specifically all you can do is check the settings it has see if there is anything to adjust any of the video settings to change colors or output range or something like that. With the link I gave those are close to the settings I use too red looks very good on the same stations/logos described but I use a HD VIP211 DishNetwork box.

Also no one listed what you use to connect to your TV, HDMI, Component? If it's component it could be the cables too. If you got a really thin unshielded component cable you could be losing a great deal of color and content because of it.

If so, you will not be successful. First-run sets allowed it, but all later builds (mine included, June 2007) disabled it because passing 'protected' audio over an 'unprotected' interface is a violation of the HDCP rules.

You can thank Big Media for this wonderful bit of crippleware. Think twice before you buy another DVD from those asshats.

The only thing I can think of that would cause that would be if your killing the power totally to the TV when/after you turn it off thus is loses its memory of the settings.

If your not unplugging/turning off all power to it I'd say you have to take it back then trade it for another one.

Yep, I've had my 42" since November and it's been great. We're using all the HDMI ports with a PVR computer, Motorola HD cable box, XBOX 360, and Philips upconverting DVD player running fine. A Wii on the component and a VCR on the composite inputs round out the equipment hooked to the Westy. I did the firmware upgrade to 1.3.0 with no problem. I guess we just got lucky because I have nothing to complain about. I feel like we got the best bang for the buck with this TV.

Why route dvd audio through your display before being sent to your receiver through analog cables? Instead, just use an optical or digital coax cable from the dvd player straight to the receiver so you can transfer digital 5.1/7.1 streams.

What I do is route the digital out from my Philips upconverting DVD player directly into my Sony 5.1 receiver. I only get regular surround sound from the TV through the RCA jacks, but that's OK with me. When I switch on the DVD player, the TV changes to that HDMI input and the receiver switches to DD 5.1.

i purchased my set on 07/02/08. i have the audio output running into my receiver with RCA cables. everything had been working great until i plugged in my upconvert dvd player w/ HDMI. after which the sound from the tv output had stopped working. there was no sound coming from the receiver at all. tested the cables and they work, tested the optical out, it works, tested the receiver inputs, and they work. i just can't get the regular audio output to work on any input of the TV at all. any suggestions?

Yes the problem is your not allowed to send out audio from HDMI from anything other than HDMI. So if you do HDMI into your TV then the only way to get audio out would be to have an HDMI out which you don't have. You have to either use a coax or optical out from your DVD to your receiver for sound that's the only way to do it.

You have to switch to the proper input you put the TV's RCA to on the AVR it will be/should be different than the input from the DVD player.

i have already switched the receiver to the appropriate input that the TV output is being connected through

On my receiver, if it is getting a digital audio signal, that overrides the input from the RCA jacks. So in my case, if I switch on the DVD player, the audio cuts out even if there is no disc loaded. I can switch back to the cable box but there will be no audio until I power off the DVD player.

Has anyone come up with a way to fix the dropped frame issue with 1080p signals.

What I am referring to is, say with my xbox360 playing guitar hero in 1080p, it drops a frame every second, so the notes flwoing down at you jerk forward every so often.

I saw someone suggest rebooting the tv using e.saver mode a few times - I have done that but it didn't help - Is there anything else I can do?

1.3.0 is the most current version.

Press menu go to settings and it will say when it was built and list a software version and the end number displayed like _1.3.0 for example are your version of FW.

im sorry, let me re-phrase, after plugging my Upconvert DVD player through HDMI on my set, i can't get the RCA audio output to work for OVER THE AIR CHANNELS. i have my DVD player's sound ran from its coax to the receivers coax separately, so i know its not the player's sound interfering. could it possibly be that since my set recognizes an HDMI source, that the analog output is being disabled?

Possibly but can't say for sure would be a funny bug. I have HDMI going in but when using my Wii on component I use the analog out of the TV to my receiver and it works fine. So yours should work the same way. Only way to tell for sure if the HDMI is somehow interfering would be to unplug it...

Only other suggestion it may sound like a no brainer but make sure you have the correct red/white out from the TV.

yea i thought that it should still work properly. i have checked to make sure the red and white are in correctly, like 1,000 times. if i were to unplug the TV from the power source for about a minute, would the set refresh itself, possibly fixing the problem? or is my set leaning towards the busted list?

I thought of what the problem could be went for a swim just got back thought of it on the way there don't know why it slipped my mind. There is two possible things. Press the menu button on your remote and go to audio and then down where it says Speaker make sure that says either External or Mixed External will make it so just he audio out is on and the speakers in the TV won't work mixed will give you both. The other one though since I see you meant OTA TV channels it won't matter on the HDMI audio setting then so guess there was only one thing to check.

If your FW was 1.1.0 then it may want you to update to 1.2.0 first then 1.3.0. I think I remember it asked me after I put my serial number in what my FW version was so I chose the 1.2.0 and thus it gave me 1.3.0 to download it is named SusanII_v1.3.0_20071026 the v.1.3.0 tells the version of course.

Forr me it asks me the s/n, then the model number (of which there is one choice, the TX-42F430S), and then two part numbers: TW-51101-L042A or TW-51102-L042A.

I have had the 42" version for about 1 month now. Sept build. So far it seems like a really great lcd. The only issue I am having is with an upscaler dvd player Phillips 5990/37 . When using an HDMI cable the screen is green/pink/blue. If I use composite cables, it works just fine. Phillips seems to think it is the player. I am waiting to hear back from them. They wanted to replace the player, until I mentioned the composite cables. We will see.

I've had my set for about a year now, and I'm still loving it! However, I am running into a problem.

I recently moved into a loft apartment, and so as not to keep the wife up at night, I decided it would be best to get some headphones. Instead of dropping a bunch of money on a wireless set, I decided to just buy some cables to connect my fairly decent wired set. Everything arrived, and after plugging everything in and testing, I'm only getting sound out of the left side :(

Going into the audio options, the MTS options are grayed out, so I can't change it from "Mono" to "Stereo" (I'm assuming that this would fix the problem.) Is there any way to enable MTS or otherwise turn on Stereo?

I don't have a receiver and would prefer not to buy one right now (short on cash, hence the money saving option of the wired headphones).

The setup works like this: Headphones > 3.5mm stereo cable > F/F 3.5mm Stereo jack > 3.5mm to RCA adapter > TV.

I thought perhaps it was something a firmware update enabled, but after jumping through the hoops at westinghouse they tell me there isn't one for my model /sigh.

I would assume that you by accident got a mono RCA/3.5mm adapter. It will mix both left and right into the left side/headphone. It is the only reason I can think if you would only get it from one side off the top of my head anyways.

I double checked my order from monoprice (it was my first thought as well) and its all stereo, unless they sent me the wrong thing, which I can't think of a way to confirm.

Plug the adapter into something else like a DVD player or something like that with RCA out and see if you get stereo that way if you do has to be the TV somehow....Try setting your TV to mixed make sure that is in stereo and when you have it on just TV speakers make sure that is stereo before going to just external.

If you get stereo using another source but still not the TV could try something like buying a cheapo pair of PC speakers for like $10 that have a Headphone jack built in them and use that RCA adapter from the TV to those speakers and then plug your headphone into those see if that gives you stereo. I have always had either a receiver or speaker system plugged into my TV never ran across only having mono sound. I even get stereo from the RCA jacks currently on this TV and 5.1 from the digital out but only on the OTA tuner of course.

I'm looking at getting my first HDTV...I know I want an LCD, around 42", 1080, etc. I've read a lot of reviews, and am on a budget of about $1,000 (good deals at Best Buy fit into my price range). I know the Westinghouse isn't perfect...the one I saw at Best Buy looked nice. I'm not an audio/visualphile. I just want to watch tv/dvds/blueray, play ps3/wii/xbox360. Would the Westinghouse be a good first TV? There is just so much information out there, it's quickly getting overwhelming, including the 170+ pages of this thread, lol.

I'm between the Westinghouse TX-42, a Phillips 42" 1080PI, 29,000:1 contrast and a Sony Bravia 37" 720P, 9,000:1 contrast (the latter of the two a wholesale store if anyone's wondering about prices). Suggestions/thoughts?

Oh and what's the deal with the digital sound issues (5.1 only coming through 2 channels or something like that) that people were having on the first few pages?

Thanks for any help/advice!! :)

I'm probably very similar to you - I just wanted a TV to play games on and watch some movies, and I think the westinghouse will be perfect for that. Its great value (not the best set out there, but probably one of the best values out there). I love the set and haven't had any issues (except this mono through headphones issue that probably has nothing to do with the TV itself.)

I heartily recommend the Westinghouse!

The best advice I can give is make sure you have everything to hook it up before you get it home. Put it through its paces as soon as you can so you can see ASAP if you have any problems with it so if you do you can exchange it for another one till you get one that works perfect. Have the PS3 with HDMI cable ready www.monoprice.com is the best place for those cables don't buy into Monster cable hype, 360 HDMI too if you have an elite if not it has component at least, Wii component too 480p at least looks better than 480i. If you have a home audio system that takes HDMI of course you need an extra HDMI or if you have an older one you can still watch the OTA and have 5.1 from optical.

Would also suggest as soon as you get the TV to update the FW(firmmware) right when you get it before you hang it on the wall or anything like that. The FW seems to fix a lot of the common problems like ghosting of menus and such. You just need a USB flash drive and a computer.

There's probably not much to worry about WRT mounts. Mount & TV vendors have (mostly) agreed on standard hole patterns. The Westy has these. I say "mostly" because I bought an extra-large mount for my 47" figuring it wouldn't hurt to go big, but that mount didn't support the standard! I exchanged for the smaller mount and saved alot.
Good luck & have fun!

I have a Westinghouse TX-47F430S and I tried for 3 hours to upgrade my firmware from 1.2 to 1.3 and I kept running into the same problem. I downloaded the package file, put it on my usb drive, unpackaged it there, then unplugged my Westinghouse, inserted the usb drive, plugged the tv back in, and when I pushed the power button on the TV, it would not power on. The problem seems to be that the TV will not power on with my firmware enabled usb drive connected. I removed everything on the usb and formatted it for fat32. Should the firmware on the usb drive be in a packaged format or should it be unpackaged in which case it would display a folder that says something like root_board (or something like that). Can the usb drive have anything else on it or should it just have the firmware? I was kind of surprise how little detailed the instructions were from Westinghouse regarding this matter.

Thanks in advance

There's your problem, you don't "unpackage" the files on the usb drive. You should only have 2 files in the root directory of the flash drive:

"safe-kernel.img1" and "update_LCD1080CX.tgz"

and nothing else. I would use an empty flash drive and format it FAT32. If that doesn't work, try a different flash drive. I actually used an SD card in a card reader on mine and it worked fine.

Good luck!

I have another question, is it possible to use my 1/8th cable for audio while using a connection of DVI > HDMI for the computer, how do i get sound, because i know DVI doesn't carry sound, Anyone know what I can do if i dont have a stero box or anything? Now that I'm using the DVI > HDMI, i cannot for some reason center the screen, theirs a good inch and a half border all around my monitor just black, how do auto adjust because when I use VGA its easy because theirs a thing under TV but now...?Lastly i usually use the VGA and the 1/8th audio cable their and it works fine, but I'm trying to see if i know color/quality different in using the HDMI... You know rather than using a VGA cable than an adapter to change that into DVI ect.... Any help will be helpful.

I don't get what you are meaning exactly by 1/8th cable are you talking about a headphone jack/plug or are you talking about an optical audio cable? The DVI to HDMI cable should look better than using a VGA cord to the TV unless your using a VGA to DVI adapter then changing that to HDMI. If you want to have full screen no black bars just change your resolution to a "wide screen" resolution a 16x9 resolution either 1920x1080 or 1280x720 both have wide screen and should eliminate the black bars on the TV.

Thanks for the fast reply Junebug1701. I will try it out and report back. Do you know if this update will enable the subwoofer option? It is currently grayed out. Thanks again!

Nope, I've never gotten that subwoofer option to work. Let us know how your update works.

Did you wait for your TV to turn on? When it loses power after you unplug it/turn it off it will sometimes take a while before it turns on. Try turning it on with the remote and the button the TV itself too sometimes one or the other won't work. I haven't heard of anyone bricking their TV because of a FW update on these TV's at least. When your trying the FW update unplug everything but but USB drive and the power cord. Some USB drives don't work for whatever reason.

I have the TX-42f4430s. I bought it in March from Best Buy. I am not getting audio to pass through my HDMI cables and into the tv. I have tried and HD DTV reciever, a blu ray player, and an HD DVD player. I am getting sound from non of them. When I first got the tv, sound passed through. What happened??? I got into the menu and reset the tv to factory settings thinking I may have changed something I was not supposed to. That did nothing. Any help would be appreciatted.

Most issues I have had with Westinghouse involved unplugging the power cord from the back of the television and leaving it out for a few minutes. If this doesnt solve the issue you have an issue internally and if you have the service plan with best buy I would call them and get a replacement set or a different brand and pay the difference. But something is not right with no sound from anything. Have you tried all the hdmi inputs?

Well, after being one of the first to own the TX-47F430S in this thread, mine had died after 14 months of ownership. It won't turn on at all. I have a Best Buy service plan and the tech came out and certified it dead, so they have a main board on order. Lead time on the board is 4 weeks. He told me after 2 weeks if he didn't have the part, then I get my choice to wait for the part or get a new TV. The reasons I really don't want a new TV is I like the black matte bezel, picky, I know. Second, is from my understanding, once they replace the TV, then the finishes the warranty. However, if it's repaired, then the warranty continues. I will probably get a new one since the tech was pretty sure the part would not arrive in a month, and would probably be longer. I had a great picture with this TV and it was a great value for the money at the time of purchase. I'll see what Best Buy offers me, but I'll probably get a Sharp or Samsung.

In the past when I've had a complete failure under the protection plan at Best Buy, they have issued a store credit which then was used to purchase a replacement item. You can then buy a new protection plan for the replacement item. This works great for vacuum cleaners by the way.

Thanks for the information. Just curious, do you know if Best Buy requires the broken item to be returned to them under a PSP before they will issue a store credit, I assume in the form of a gift card? I was thinking I might be able to sell the power supply or LCD panel since those appear to be operational. It appears some other board went bad, based on what the technician told me.

I had purchased the replacement plan for my son's DS. We had to have it replaced. They required us to mail it in and sent us a gift card. Which took about 8-10 weeks. I would imageine they would want it back.

I just did a search on Westinghouse's website using my serial number and it said a firmware update was available for my set. I followed the instructions for update (as best as I could...more on that later) and was unable to get my television to update. It just turned on as if no USB device was inserted. First of all, the instructions say to unzip the downloaded file's contents to your flash drive, then rename the update file. Problem is, there are actually TWO files and the instructions don't say which one to rename. Additionally, one of the files is also zipped, and it doesn't say whether to leave it zipped or unpack it. Confusing to say the least.

So I called customer service this morning, and the rep told me if I wasn't currently having any problems with the set to skip the firmware update. He said they've been getting reports of TVs bricking when the update is performed. Has anybody heard of this?

I'm not having any major problems with the set (my Toshiba HD-A3 tends to cut out about three times per movie...Toshiba thinks it's a HDCP handshake issue with the TV. I've been through three HDDVD units and it hasn't resolved the issue.), but I'd like to get any of the upgrades associated with the latest firmware, if there are any.

Does anybody know what features/fixes are in the latest firmware update? I think the firmware version was 1.4.2 or something. I could be wrong.

Also, part of the instructions list a "MCU Update". Anybody know what that is or where to get that file? Again, the instructions on their website are confusing. The customer service rep I spoke with this morning had no idea what MCU was. Odd...

I just went to Westinghouse's site to check for a new firmware update. When I'm at page to enter the serial number, the only option for "Part Number" is TW-51121-C042A.

Is it safe to install the new update even though my part number is TW-51122-C042A? The new firmware's download name is "01_OSD_FW_V1.4.2.rar"

edit: I just read the announcement of the storage loss. that explains it.

anyway, when I go to wd website to update my firmware, when I put my serial number in, it says "this number does not match our records" even though its the same serial number i've always used. And I have downloaded firmware from there before. Anyone else had this problem? I saw another guy who had it but his post was deleted as well.

2nd edit: I Just got off the phone with wd support. He says it says that because the last firmware I downloaded is the newest one and it will say "this number does not match our records" until a new firmware comes out. I find that pretty dumb but whatever.

It is fairly new within the past couple of weeks.

If you download and update your TV please post how it went and if it works fine for you. I haven't read any posts yet from someone with a 42" updating yet.

The update for the 47" 1.6.3 I think it is was messed up for me at least. I had to revert back to the 1.3.0 to fix all the the problems it caused it made it so any 1080i/p source wouldn't even display on the TV for more than a second or two.

It looks to me that all this new firmware update does is allow the V-chip ratings to be updated in the future. This is from the web page:

http://www.wde.com/vchip/

The V-Chip

All Westinghouse LCD HDTVs include a V-Chip which permits selective blocking of television programming based on the content ratings system in use today.

The V-Chip feature allows for future updates of the content ratings system (although at this time we are unaware of any broadcasters or other program distributors who are using or planning to use a new content ratings system). A few Westinghouse TVs shipped without the ability to update the content ratings system in the event that such an update does take place. Westinghouse Digital is providing a firmware upgrade solution for those consumers who choose to enable the ability to update the content ratings system.

Please note that this update is not needed to operate your TV – the only purpose of the update is to allow the TV to use a new ratings system if one is developed.

If you wish to determine whether your TV is enabled with the capability to update the content ratings system, please see below:

The optical out is for all sources including HDMI what your probably missing is that you have to change it to the proper audio your HDMI is passing which should be digital. Go to your Menu then go to Audio and where it says HDMI1 or whatever input your on make sure it is set to Digital unless your using a HDMI with a DVI source then putting the analog in for audio then of course you have to use analog.

You are limiting yourself to 2 channel audio doing it this way though anything you pass through HDMI of the TV through optical or analog makes no difference it will always be just 2 channel. You will only get 5.1 if your watching the "TV" via the tuner built in (OTA) and if the channel your watching is actually broadcasting in 5.1. So if you have a Blu Ray player or DVD or Xbox 360 you won't get the benefit of 5.1-7.1 if you pass it through your TV you have to either put the optical from the source to the receiver or you put the HDMI to the receiver then the receiver would have a HDMI out to TV.

What happened to the post containing the results from the Spyder calibration?? Those were the best settings I've found here yet. I set my TV to those settings. Am I missing something? This thread is like 3 pages shorter.

In particular what happened to this post?

I was offered a deal on a SpyderTV calibrator system (see the DataColor web site for product details) for $100, so I picked it up. YMMV, but I thought I'd share my results with the group. They are actually pretty similar to settings that have been recommended by others based on eyeballing the display.

For all calibrations, Sharpness was set at 5 and Skin Tone was at 50.

For backlight set at 70:

Brightness: 50
Contrast: 73
Saturation: 59
Hue: 53
Color temperature: Warm

For backlight set at 40:

Brightness: 48
Contrast: 71
Saturation: 63
Hue: 56
Color temperature: Warm

The SpyderTV was easy to use and the results were definitely an improvement over my previous settings. The calibration process takes about 30 minutes. It's pretty basic: only a few different color fields are presented to the colorimeter. You spend most of your time twiddling settings so the software can see what the effects are.
---End Quote---
As an alternate (and I think as mentioned earlier in this ginormous thread) the AVIA DVD might work pretty well. If you don't want to buy it, I know Blockbuster Total Access carries it. But that assumes you subscribe to the Blockbuster movie delivery service. lol I'm not sure you could get a better picture than one you'd get using a calibration tool, though. Thought I trhow my two cents in anyway...

I just got a Denon 1909 and I tried hooking it up to my TX-47F430S. It is having issues receiving video over HDMI. Rarely it will see the HDMI passthrough signals perfectly. The internal menu to the receiver and my PS3. The PS3 works fine directly connected to the TV. Looking around I have seen a lot of handshaking issues with the PS3. I am curious if this is the same issue and sony just built a workaround into the PS3. Has anyone else had problems trying to connect a Audio Video Receiver through HDMI to their westinghouse?

Help! My tv is dead!

This after installing the SusanII_v1.3.0.rar firmware. It was a TX-47F430S purchased in July of 2007, so it most likely had the April 2007 firmware. My suspicion is that the unit had an older chipset than the one supported by the susanII firmware, and now the incompatibility is keeping the tv from turning on (the amber light is on and remains amber). I downloaded this file from this forum and NOT from the westinghouse website, which was my mistake, but that's irrelevant now.
I have no man. warr., no BB ext. warranty. The service technician diagnosed it as needing a new "mainboard" which will run $400, so I obviously don't want to go this route if at all possible.

I think all I need is a copy of the original firmware to roll back to a working state, but I can't find that anywhere. Westinghouse customer support has no better access to firmwares than we do at the their download page, so they're no help. For my serial number, it doesn't offer any firmwares, not even the one that shipped with the set. I would think that if they do have a version 1.1.0 firmware online, it would be located in the same folder as the other firmwares on westinghouse's server (207.38.27.164/firmware/SW/), but there's no way of browsing the contents of that folder for the one I need.

So, it looks like the heavy $400 service is the only solution... or is it?? If you have any ideas, PLEASE HELP!

If you had the version 1.1.0 to upgrade FW correctly you should have went to 1.2.0 then to 1.3.0 or the new 1.6.3 you can't go from 1.1.0 to 1.3.0 or 1.6.3 without first having 1.2.0 from 1.2.0 you can go to either 1.3.0 or 1.6.3. That is why your TV quit working. I would be sure if you talk to Westinghouse you don't ever tell them that you downloaded firmware that wasn't directly from them. You might search the thread see if anyone posted the 1.1.0 or the 1.2.0 for the 47" I only have 1.3.0 and 1.6.3 myself.

This is at least what someone else told me when they tried to do the same thing.

Ok, upon searching many places, this seems to be the right place to shoot this question.

I have just purchased the TX-47F430S yesterday mainly for my PC (Core2 Duo 2.5Ghz [over clocked to 3.15 Ghz w. slight voltage increase to CPU] with 2GB Ram & nVidia Gforce 9600GT[GPU not overlclocked]) using DVI-HDMI and most likely some HDTV using HDMI in the near future. I was looking at LVM37xxx and W4207 models as well but i ended up getting an amazing deal so i decided to go ahead with the purchase of this model. In terms of f/w, i will provide once i check it tonight.

I have the TV connected to my PC using HDMI-DVI cable. Upon turning on the TV for the first time, everything worked great. Playing movies and browsing with it. Then in about 5 min. of usage, the TV goes in to the sleep mode or off mode (with amber light) and non of the button on the remote works. The tech support at Westing house advised me that it seems to be an issue with HDMI-DVI handshake issue and to perform the following;

1. Unplug power on TV
2. Unplug HDMI cable on TV (while DVI still connected to PC), run thru (by plugging and unplugging) all HDMI ports starting from 1-4 then 4-1.
3. Unplug DVI on the PC and re-run the step 2.
4. Plug everything back into the TV and restart.

The TV restarts and plays fine again for about 5 min. and i encounter the same issue.
I have also tried resetting the TV back to factory setting as well as numerous power cycles (without 4 steps above as i found simple power cycling of 20-30 secs seem to yield the same result) but it always shuts off in 5 min. into its operation.

I have tried the VGA cable and i get the exact same issue and i'm very inclined to return the TV but debating whether to exchange it with the same model or get different brand/model altogether. But b/c there so many people that seem to be overly happy with this TV, i wanted to eliminate the possibility of anything i'm NOT doing right here before jumping into this.

Has anyone encountered this same issue at all or similar that could shed some light on to my problem that i'm having?

Thanks in advance!

That doesn't sound like a HDMI handshake issue at all to me if it does it via VGA too it sounds like a defective TV. If you just bought it I would take it back an exchange it for the same one and keep doing so till you get one that works/looks perfectly. If you are still not happy with it then for sure go with another brand. I am happy with my 47" for a computer monitor I have never had an issue with mine other than the new 1.6.3 firmware and 1080 sources for me was messed up but went back to the 1.3.0 and is still perfect.

I have a question. I purchased a 4 year warranty with best buy and have had this set for 11 months. I just moved to my new apartment and was careful as heck moving the TV.

Well I plugged it in the new apartment and it refuses to turn on. If I unplug it and hold the power button the TV will boot, but then stay in standby mode and refuse to turn on. It is locked up.

I called best buy and scheduled a tech to come out today. They just called me back and said that they could not locate a tech in the area. They will replace my TV, but I need to give them the serial number when I get home and they need to get a confirmation number from Westinghouse.

They want me to bring the defective TV to bestbuy and are claiming that they will charge me a fee if they have to deliver it. I have a small car and to be honest I think it is crap that they can not deliver me a new set. They claim that the warranty only covers in home service, which they can not provide me.

I will have to talk to a manager on a case by case basis if I want a set delivered without a fee.

Is there anyway I can just return the tv get store credit, get something else and transfer the warranty to a new set?

Welp...March 03, 2008 I purchased the 47" as posted #4584. This week, the display has begun dorking up. Perfect horizontal line occasionally has pegged left-to-right across the center of the set. And when that first showed its ass, the top 1/2 of that 'new horizon' had been juttering. Power-cycling the set would thrash it out and straighten up the visuals. Today, its dual-personality added a new twist -- inverting the display's visuals on the top half upside down, while the bottom half stayed right-side up. Obviously, I'm glad I opted for an extended warranty. I'll get in touch with BB and see about lining up a tech visit...or bringing it in to them for service.

It was indeed a defective TV.
I just picked up a new set and it is working like a charm!
Thanks for the heads up Carsfanatic! Really appreciate your input on my earlier thread.

What are some color settings that some of you guys use?
I did play around with it but it really seems taxing on my eyes...

That's all you need, just hook it up and scan for channels.

When i run the scan, it asks me to from HRC/IRC and another option that looks to be analog. What do i choose here? I was too impatient to let it scan thru just by looking at all of the analog channels being picked up but i suppose HD channels will be scanned afterwards?

Just a quick note, the antenna is plugged in to TV using coax cable.

It is in the options choose it before you scan you can choose to scan both or analog or digital only. If you scan digital only it will only look for the "HD" channels.

I'll vouch for Nesto's settings that Carsfanatic linked to above. They look great across the board, whether it's games, movies, or sports, and it's the best balance of brightness/saturation and deepish blacks on this TV imo. I haven't been able to find a better setup, and I recently tried some others but found myself going back to Nesto's. The glorious bastard did it without any calibration tools/discs, too.

I have been trying to update the firmware to the 1.3 version, currently its on 1.2. I have tried at least 3 different flash drives and micro sd car on a usb adapter. I have tried updating with the files zipped, unzipped in a folder and the unzipped frimware not in a folder with just the two files. All have yielded the same thing. I unplug the tv and all the cables, wait about 10 minutes, plug in the usb stick, light turns orange, hit the power button, nothing happens. I then plug everything back in. The firmware does not update. ANy help from here would be appreciated as wde tech support was worthless.

Another strange behaviour i have encountered on my TV. I actually think it will most likely (hopefully) be the DVI-HDMI cable but i would like you guys' thoughts on this.

TX42F450S purchased (rather exchanged) on Wednesday, and upon setting it up (PC to TV using DVI-HDMI cable), I watched a bunch of HD-DVD/Blue Ray ripped movies, played some COD4 and everything looked top notch. Resolution is set to 1920x1080 on nVidia 9600GT. Then yesterday, i hooked up COAX (cable) to see if i can pick up any digital channels from Rogers cable (in Thornhill, ON), ran scan, watched some analog channels and then i turned on the PC, switched input to HDMI1 and now i see fuzzy, over contrasted picture on the TV. Around the edges of each text, i see bit of ghosting, and fonts for any text look very messy (fuzzy/jagged). I played around with color setting on both PC/TV but no help. I dont think running the scan for cable TV have anything to do with why my display seems all messed up but since the time it ran fine and until i ran into this issue, this was the only thing i've done in between and thought worth mentioning.

So i tried the following;

1. Used VGA cable (with DVI adapter)
Result; images/fonts look clear as they should be but the color looks really faded. Would this be normal? If not, i would start suspecting the video card so I also tried the following.
2. I used DVI to DVI on another 22 inch monitor
Result; images/fonts look fine as they should be. I know this is a much smaller monitor and DVI-DVI but unfortunately i dont have any other HDMI capable display so these two cases were the only ones i could run.

So im thinking DVI-HDMI cable isnt working the way it should? I know anything is possible (just by looking at the reason by i had to exchange my TV with the reason that no one seems to have in forums that i've visited for this TV....) but are there a lot of cases where DVI-HDMI cable is defective?

So my verdict at this point is the cable and i'm planning to exchange to another one.

What do you guys think?

Thanks again!

I gave this a try but it only picked up 1 channel and that did work either.. may be my antenna is crappy... not sure if you are familiar with Toronto area but i live right around Steeles between Yonge/Bayview. I would think i should be able to pick up a few channels using this antenna at least.. but one thing i notice is that i cant even pick up local analog channels (this antenna being VHF/UHF) so im leaning towards this antenna being a dud...

Just thought I would post here to say that I have owned this TV for over a year and recently upgraded to a samsung 81f series with the LED backlighting (advertised 500,000:1 contrast haha yeah right) and after comparing the PQ to my Westinghouse 47 side by side and in actual viewing there was little difference so I returned the Samsung. Please do not be tricked into spending thousands of extra dollars to end up with a TV just as good as a "budget" brand like Westinghouse. Hopefully someone will stumble across this post and realize how great of a TV this is and save themselves alot of money.

and @ outkst012l I use a dvi-hmdi cable to watch stuff from my computer all the time and I have never experienced this so I'm inclined to say its from the cable. At least it would be smart to try a different cable since its an easy enough thing to test and just get it off your potential problems list. Be sure to go to monoprice.com if you don't want to pay the ridiculous markup at the big retailers.

edit: reading > me glad you figured it out

So it is damaged where you plug the HDMI into your TV? What about the other 3 HDMI are they ok? You could check the other 3 make sure they work too just to be sure that it is just the 1 and no other cable problems too.

I haven't been there in many years. The last I was there it wasn't part of Toronto it was the municipality of Scarborough.

I would guess it is your antenna you got just can't pick up the stations very well. Here is a good link to the stations around your area.

Guys, no doubt about it, the 42" is the TV to get. Mine is still going strong, even used about 18hrs a day sometimes 24. I haven't had any problems yet. All my HDMI ports work still. I guess, I just don't have a lot of different equipment. I have my computer(DVD Player) and my cable box. Neither on has refused to come up and they don't drop out.
If you are dead set on a 47", buy another brand. If you find a 42" is what you want, you will most likely be pleased with the Westing House.

I am wondering if someone could host a 1.6.3 firmware for me to download, or send the original rar archive to a email i'd provide in PM for the Westinghouse model number TX-47F430S. mine currently has the 1.2.0 firmware, and am noticing some bugs that I hope that might eventually be phased out either with 1.6.3 or future firmware, but if someone could provide me the latest for TX-47F430S 47" HDTV i'd appreciate that. either on a external website, or perhaps to my personal email through PM.

Do not buy this TV. Reason: You just bought a borked set.

I would suggest first you try the 1.3.0 firmware and if that solves it stick with that one. I have the same TV been using 1.3.0 since they relased it and it has been very good to me with no errors at all when I tried the new 1.6.3 it made it so all 1080 inputs would cut in and out and basically unwatchable. Also going to post instructions again....since people can't seem to read them when they download their firmware.

LINK (http://207.38.27.164/firmware/SW/SusanII_v1.3.0_20071026.rar) This is for 1.3.0

LINK3 (http://207.38.27.164/firmware/SW/SusanII_v1.6.3.rar) This is for 1.6.3

I will add since people can't seem to read it correctly all you have to do is take the downloaded file and unzip/extract it right to the blank USB thumb drive you don't have to do anything but that leave the one zipped file that gets extracted to the drive alone.

I can't seem to get into the service menu even though I've followed the instructions, hold down both vol- and input while powering on the TV.

Number one, my TV won't power on until I press and release the power button. If I continue to hold the power button, the TV front light comes on but nothing else until I release it. If I hold down the vol- and the input and then press and release the power button, the TV just powers up as normal, no service menu.

Anybody have any ideas?

I just got a Denon 1909 and I tried hooking it up to my TX-47F430S. It is having issues receiving video over HDMI. Rarely it will see the HDMI passthrough signals perfectly. The internal menu to the receiver and my PS3. The PS3 works fine directly connected to the TV. Looking around I have seen a lot of handshaking issues with the PS3. I am curious if this is the same issue and sony just built a workaround into the PS3. Has anyone else had problems trying to connect a Audio Video Receiver through HDMI to their westinghouse?

I figured out what was going on. I recently updated my TV firmware from 1.2 to 1.6.3 (because of the PS3 update which killed my audio) After this update blu-ray movies would no longer display (found this one out after the initial post) and the new receiver wouldn't pass HDMI. After scanning this threat a little too much, I discovered a I could downgrade my firmware to 1.3. Magically I can play Blu-Ray movies and pass my PS3 through the Denon receiver. Moral of the story... Westinghouse has a fre problems with update 1.6.3 and I would avoid it if you could.

On a secondary note, was firmware 1.6.3 supposed to do anything besides V-chip stuff?

I just picked up the 42 over the weekend.

The Menu>Settings shows the build date as Mar 08 and firmware version is 1.6.
I've gone through half the pages in this thread and my eyes are starting to burn...How do you revert to the 1.3 firmware?? I unrar'ed the two files onto a usb stick but when I plug it in the tv just boots up normally, no pause or wait time. Funny thing is, I don't even have to press the power button and it boots right up when I plug it into the wall. Weird.....

The reason I want to revert to 1.3 is I'm experiencing handshake issues with my ps3 via HDMI. Game play is fine, great in fact. But I put in a bluray disc and I get no picture, just audio.

It has to do something other than just the V-chip stuff when I tried the 1.6.3 update it made it like you described pretty much but only for 1080 i/p inputs 720p and lower where fine. I went back to the 1.3.0 and back to normal now.

I had similar issues with the 1.6.3 for the 47" though 1.3.0 seems like the most stable one to date.

Go up a few posts maybe one page back now I gave detailed instructions on what to do. Just take the downloaded file and upzip/extract the file you download directly to a blank FAT32 thumb drive and that should be it don't upzip/extract the files it puts on the thumb drive just leave it as is.

Wait a minute, if you're trying to scan channels from an antenna, you should not be seeing an HRC/IRC option. Those are cable channel bands. Go to MENU->TV Source and choose "AIR", NOT "CABLE". Now select "Autoscan". You can choose to scan just digital channels or both digital and analog.

Will these firmware versions work on all versions of the TX-47F430S? My model no. is TW-51211-C047A.

My problem is that i'm having lockups, i think... Randomly, when the TV is on OR off, the remote and side tv buttons become usless... and holding the side power button on the tv down for 1-2seconds will "reset" the TV.

Has anyone heard of firmware fixing this problem? I bought my TV just under a year ago from Dell (Canada), and I'm not interested in shipping it back to Westinghouse in California for almost as much as the TV costs... Help!? Please!

Help!? Please!

I tried the two different choices it gave me for a 47" when downloading the firmware and both gave me the same exact file from the same place. So at least for the 1.3.0 and the 1.6.3 both where the same regardless of the "version" of TV.

not sure if this is common, but i hear this crackling noise from my TV which is quite annoying. Only thing i have hooked up to the TV right now is my PC using DVI - HDMI cable where PC sound card is going directly into my 5.1 system.

I have not tried any other source for this so i have not yet to confirm whether this noise exists even when have other source playing thru my TV. Any of you guys having this problem too?

I've never heard this from mine, are you using the internal speakers? Mine have always been turned off. I also have a PC/DVR hooked up using HDMI 1 but with the audio going in from the sound card to the HDMI 1 audio jack.

I was close to pulling the trigger on this set but after seeing the set at a friends home I decided to pass. Black levels were terrible on this model. A shame though because it has a great menu system with lots of tweaks. It's PQ is handicapped by the poor black levels.

Hi Junebug, that's pretty much the same setup i have.
I'm using a logitec 5.1 system for sound and NOT using the internal speakers on TV.
I even tried muting it but same thing... crackling noise occurs whether on mute or off mute. I've seen other people complaining about this when they use HDMI....

this is my second set and (which 1st set was returned due to auto shut-off issue) im not sure if i should return it again.... grrr

Cars,

That's what I did with the update, downloaded and unzipped/extracted to the usb. The 2 files are the only thing there.

I actually masked the problem. But now I'm suffering from lack of 1080p content during blue ray. Westinghouse CSR couldn't figure it out.

What I did was go into my PS3 BD/DVD Settings > BD/DVD 1080p 24Hz Output (HDMI) > Set it to OFF. This setting was on AUTO which produces no video, neither does ON. By doing this I'm not getting 1080p PQ / resolution then correct??

So I need to get to 1.3.0 firmware....which won't up/"down-date"...

That is very confusing. At the least with you doing the same thing we can blame it on their firmware that caused it. With the 1.6.3 firmware of course like I said I get no 1080 content i or p if I go down to 720p which luckily I know how to do blind on my PC you should be able to see the content.

As far as it not "downgrading" I have no clue why that doesn't work for you I did it literally in 10 minutes tops to update to 1.6.3 find out it was bugged then went back to 1.3.0.

The only thing I can suggest is turning off the TV for 4 hours plus. Then make sure your format the USB drive again even if you have already did formatted it once do a full format of course not quick re download the 1.3.0 again just encase something was wrong with your other download and then unzip it again. Put the drive in the TV that you should have left unplugged for 4 plus hours and then put the power plug it in and turn it on. Hopefully that will work for you if not I really have no other ideas.

Let me know how it turns out I would gladly help you explain to westinghouse their errors with their firmware if it would help them to help you.

Hello. I am new here (obviously) I have the TX-42F430. I am happy with it so far but just want to make sure I am getting the best out of it. I did print out the settings Carsfanatic linked above so thank you.

My question is. If I am using a PS3 as my BD player. To I want the RGB setting at Full or Limited?

Limited looks better and it doesn't clip BTB or WTW as long as you turn superwhite on even in limited mode. The last option in video settings is for the superwhite.

You have to go to the "Calibration" menu it's in Video with the others towards the bottom it says no all the time just go down to it then press right arrow on the remote and then you get more settings in it should be skin tone.

Updated my TX-47F430S via the update @ Westinghouse's website, seem's I've lost alot of video configuration options, such as black/white adjustment. Also, I was given new instructions I suppose on how to update my set which did *not* work on my unit. I went from 1.0(?) to 1.3 probably 7 months ago by unplugging, plugging usb, plugging in power, turning on & waiting for the led to change purple, so I simply used that again. Seems odd that the website would given me instructions for some other model I suppose. Anyhow, I'm on 1.4.2 nothing seems to be different other than the fact video configuration menus have moved & I've lost a few different configuration options. I will update my TX-42F430S here shortly & see what happens.

My broken 42" was replaced at BestBuy with the extended warranty. It's just after one year so the remainder of the 4-year warranty was canceled.

The unit comes with firmware 1.3.0. Could anyone tell me if it's worthwhile to upgrade it? If so, where can I find the download and instruction?

Some of the features that I would be interested in (from reading the thread last summer):

- digital audio pass-through to output (seems to be taken off for legal reason).
- epg caching
- hdmi handshake (some seem to suggest 1.6 is worse)

I did find one thing weird already in 2 days: in power setting, when it shows e-saver, it actually runs as normal; and vice versa. Anyone seen it?

Thanks!

From several different people both 42" and the 47" the new firmware the ones right after 1.3.0 have been plagued with problems so I would not update unless you know you have some warranty to safe guard you just encase something happens.

I have a question that I am pressing to get solved. I have a DVI-VGA adaptor connected to the VGA port. I am trying to run my Westy 42 inch at 1280x720 resolution and everything looks fine until I turn the TV off. I am using E.Saver mode, but if I switch to regular mode after a day it does the same thing, and if I turn the TV off and back on the screen shifts to the right and I have to run the auto adjustment.

In fact I have to run the auto adjustment constantly. Anyone have any ideas on why it would be doing this? Thanks.

For those of you that are using this TV as computer monitor at 1920 x 1080 resolution, please confirm if you are having the following issue.

I'm at the brink of exchanging this TV once again (it will be the 3rd TV in the last 4 wks since i purchased my first one). What a bummer.....

- My PC is;
-> Core 2 Duo 2.53Ghz on Gigabyte EP-35DSR + nVidia 9600GT & 2GB or RAM
-> running Windows Vista Ultimate at 1920 + 1080
-> DVI/HDMI cable used (to HDMI 1 port) to connect PC to TV
-> 5.1 logitec sound system used with 5.1 on-board sound

The problems im having are;
1. @ 1920 x 1080 all text within windows vista (whether in windows explorer or browser) look very smudged and i see ghosting of text/images. Im not sure whether shadowing is causing this but it looks very poor in terms of clarity & crispness of browsing which is super annoying.

2. Occasional crackling noise coming from the TV when playing PC games. Sound is playing fine thru Logitec speakers but even when the TV is muted or unmuted, this crackling noise is apparent as it comes and goes (very random). I've heard others having this issue while playing PS3 thru HDMI and suspect that it is a HDMI specific issue.

3. 4-5 dead pixels (in 2 weeks) with 2 in the center and 2-3 to the top right of the screen.

Man, im not having good experience with this TV.
2 exchanges in 4 weeks.....

Do you have the 42" or the 47" and what firmware do you currently have installed on it.

I have the 47" with 1.3.0 installed since the more recent one is filled with bugs and problems. I have a computer and a PS3 hooked up to the TV with no issues at all no popping or clicks or hissing or anything from either. I do not have my TV speakers on though I have a Onkyo 605 that does all sound for me. I have several computer setups one with Vista Ultimate, one with XP Pro and one Mac setup and none have issues using HDMI with this TV but, might be the 605 that helps that too since I don't do any sound through TV.

Is your display crisp on your TV as a monitor when using PC thru HDMI?
No smudged looking text in browsers, no ghosting of the text, etc etc?
I assume you are displaying at 1920 x 1080 correct?

I would've looked past the sound (crackling) issue but quality of display + 4-5 dead pixels (almost out of the box) on the 2nd set is really annoying me that im starting to lose my patience with this TV.

1st one was exchanged on the 2nd day i bought it b/c of TV just powering off by itself and locking out issue every 10-15 min. Only way to turn the TV back on was to power cycle it and then it happens over and over in 10-15 min interval. I've had this 2nd (Brand New) one for about 3 weeks and im about to return it for the 3rd set while having to pay for the shipping out of my pocket.

So after having the 47'' westy for almost a year i was experiencing severe image retention from the input boxes. I bought the set online from BB and didn't bother to buy the extended warranty. (my bad) So I called westinghouse and tried all of their remedies to fix the problem, none worked. Then they told me they had no techs in my location to check it out and to call BB back to see if they could get someone out. I then called BB and was told they had nobody either and the manager told me to bring it in to ship it out. So I bring it down and they tell me it's too big. They tell me to call westy back and get it settled. After about 8 hours of phone time between the two they finally agreed to send me a new set at their expense. However I no longer wanted a westinghouse due to my frustration from the utter lack of communication between the two companies. After another long while they gave me a full return authorization to BB and I traded it in and got a Sammy LN52a650 with 10% off for my trouble. Sorry for the rant, just had to get it out there

Umm so you turned down a brand new set ( for free) to pay 90% retail on a sammy? Seems kind of dumb to me I'd take the free set leave it in the box pay retail for the sammy and sell the westy if I was really that upset. Just seems like throwing away money the way you did it.

any tweaks/helps are appreciated...

Glad to see that i'm not the only one having this issue.
I tried 2 different HDMI-DVI cables and i get the same result. They werent both the monster cable quality cable and I'm not sure if that would make the difference. When i tried DVI-VGA adaptor, text also looked ok but over all graphics looked very faded and i didnt like it at all...

I called westinghouse tech and spoke to them about my issues but just based on dead pixel issue, they were willing to replace the TV for a new one. Contemplating on when to do it cuz i'm really hesitant on sending it back at my own cost while this being the 3rd TV in 4 weeks... Not sure if the 3rd set is going to be fine and im gonna end up wasting my $$ shipping it back.

And yes, any tweaks/helps would be greatly appreciated guys.

i posted in the wrong thread...I actually have the VK42F240S...i just found the auto adjustment under the PC input (using a VGA cable) and using this dramatically cleared up my text...there is no such setting under the HDMI input which is still kinda fuzzy...anyway I am very content with it as a monitor now...

So, after updating to 1.4.2 my set decided it only wanted to actually turn on randomly, sometimes I would get the Westinghouse logo a few times, sometimes the LCD would actually turn on, now it seems that the set will not turn on at ALL (3-4 days after updating the firmware), First thing I attempted was turning the unit on with 2 different remotes (I also own a 42"), turning on by the units power button & leaving the set unplugged overnight. Moving on, I've tried going back to 1.3.0, 1.4.2 again, etc, etc. I unplug the TV, insert Sandisk Cruzer, plug in power, the TV's front LED turns purple for a 1 second, then turns orange & stays orange, the green end cap light on the Sandisk flickers on and off for a few seconds until becoming completely solid, nothing is updated & the unit still refuses to power on. I've did all of this while pressing the power button initially when re-plugging the device back in which gave me some hope because while holding the power button the Sandisk seemed to have a rhythm of flashing until I finally let go of the power button, then it would do its few flashes like I described above before turning completely solid again. Any ideas from anyone? I really do not want to take this unit to BB for replacement under my extended warranty - I don't feel like 'loosing' 3 years worth of my extended warranty, I don't want to loose my TV for 2-3 weeks & I don't want to have to scout out another friend with a truck to bring the thing to BB.

Thus, any insight? Thanks in advance!

How long have you had the set to begin with if it is a very short period you might be able to just return it for another of the same thing and not worry about using up your warranty. If it has been the 90 days then of course it would use the warranty.

How long have you had the set to begin with if it is a very short period you might be able to just return it for another of the same thing and not worry about using up your warranty. If it has been the 90 days then of course it would use the warranty.

My 1year mfr warranty ends today, I called in on the 6th to get everything settled, however the entire process is going to take 2-3 weeks :(

Okay, I have read and re-read this post...

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showpost.php?p=14208399&postcount=5023

I unzip the WINRAR file called "SusanII_v1.3.0_20071026" and there is another zipped file inside.

Do I unzip this second file?

Also I have a USB drive formatted to FAT32. Can there be other items on the drive or does the FW update have to be the only thing?

Also what should the folder for the FW update be named?

Extract (unzip) the WinRAR firmware file in your system by simply double clicking the downloaded file. Then click the Extract To icon and choose the destination path. Highlight the drive that you have designated as your USB drive, then click Enter. File will automatically transfer from the system to USB drive.

The instructions do not mention anything about having to also unzip/extract the file on the USB drive so pretty self explanatory.

1. Insert the USB thumb drive into your computer.
2. Right click on the Removable Disk icon.
3. From the menu, select Format.

4. Under File System, select FAT32.
5. Select Start to begin formatting.

Again pretty clear if you format the drive to FAT32 of course the drive is going to be blank there would be no folders no other files on the drive.

You do not have to worry about what anything is named just extract the files after you format the USB drive and that's it.

Ask all the questions you want to that's what the forums are for. It's your TV your going to mess up possibly if you don't understand so don't hesitate to ask all you need to till you understand completely. It's better to ask and make sure than to just guess and mess something up.

My main point was that my USB drive was formatted to FAT32 months ago so I already had a number of files I had transferred between my PS3 and PC. I wanted to know if they would cause an issue. No big deal, I just re-formatted it so that I don't take any chances. The only things on there are these

This stupid tv. My friend has the tv at his house. Works fine and dandy. Bring it over to my hosue and the "start-up" screen comes up and then goes in standby mode. Is there a 'reboot' code or something for the tv? And could a firmware upgrade fix this freezing problem? We tried the firmware upgrade thing and now the tv just doesn't turn on...like it's stuck in standby mode

Wow, I drank the Koolaid too, but returned my TX-47 about a year ago to BB. Have been out of the country since then, just now catching up on the latest news.

I can't believe the drama that's still going on with this set! And "Westinghouse" is still in business? Incredible. At least you guys got new firmware to play with, more tweaks to try and fresh opportunities to brick the unit...

Do you put these two files EXACTLY HOW THEY ARE onto the USB. Then plug the USB in the tv. Then plug the power supply in. Then press power on the tv? And what is the purpose of unplugging the tv for a minute as opposed to 4 hours?

You shouldn't be "putting" the files to a USB manually or yourself at all just download the file either from links here or go through what you need to from westy's website and then unzip them directly to the drive. What you have listed looks right to me. I guess unplugging the TV just makes sure you don't have the TV doing something it shouldn't just before updating the firmware. Unplugging it for the 4+ hours is like a reset it ensures that all the capacitors in the TV have discharged and is good for things such as opening the TV up to work on it so you know you won't fry yourself :)

Cars, you seem extremly knowledgable abou tthese sets. Let me ask you: Is it possible the 'main board' could be bad? If so, how does this happen? When I first got this set I plugged it in normal and then ONLY connected my xbox with the red, blue, and green wires. I went to Best Buy's Geek Squad and they told me the board could be bad or my power at my residence is restricted.

It could be just waht BB told you bad board or not pulling enough watts for power to allow your TV enough power to give the USB connected to it enough power to do the firmware update. If your TV is running through a surge protector that could be part of the power "restriction" if that is the problem in the first place try going directly to the wall with no surge protectors or extention cords in between. If you still get the same thing after that then probably not a power issue.

There are of course other things it could be besides just the board and power too. The main one I would suggest trying is a different USB thumb drive. People have reported trying up to 5 different USB drive brands until they got one that worked correctly. I got lucky myself the first one I tried worked fine for my USB. Other than the USB drive not really much else you could do other than trading/exchanging/returning your current TV for another one if BB would do that for you.

I am guessing you have a firmware older than 1.3.0 a lot of people have reported that 1.3.0 took care of the ghosting at least. The PS3 not being detected sounds like another issue though. It could be a bad HDMI or a bad HDMI input on the TV.

right do that, and just be careful

im not 100% sure it would be compatible because of the serial number, when you type in the serial numbers in the update page, it sometimes gives you different results so, you might want to figure that out too just to make really sure it won't brick his set.

Hello,

Looking for some help here. I just purchased a TX-42F430S. I have a problem, I am watching HD movies via the Xbox 360 external HD player over the VGA cable. Now the problem, there is 3 vertical rows of what looks to be white pixels, around 20-30 white dots that also flicker. They only appear in the movie not in the black bars at the top or bottom of the screen.

Can anyone help here? This is the only time I see this issue ....

I will most likely head back to best buy for an exchange tomorrow afternoon because something isnt right. I have tried two different vga cables, different movies and the results were still the same.

Thanks!!

Did you try a different TV besides the Westy? I would take the 360 with you make them hook it up for you before you leave with another TV if you have no other TV to check it with then your sure to get a good one. I had to do this years back when I got my first HDTV that seemed to have quality control issues too but wasn't a Westy either.

I got a 42" replacement with firmware 1.3.0

I have a setup with HDMI-1 connected to a PC. It used to stay at 1920x1080 after reboot. Now, after reboot, it will become 1024x768 with panning. The display properties on the PC still shows 1920x1080. To restore it, I had to choose a different resolution, apply and then choose 1920x1080 again.

Is this a problem with TV HDMI handshake?

Thanks!

That sounds more like an issue of your PC/Video card/Driver than any handshake issue. Once I set my PC to a resolution it stays there no matter if I change inputs then back again or turn it off and then on again or anything. I have had issues in the past with some bad drivers that caused similar issues to what you describe but none this year.

Hi,

I've gained a lot of knowledge reading this thread, thank you all :)
I've got the TX-47F430S (a very nice LCD for the price) and have the OPPO DV-980H DVD player (a very nice, sleek looking unit BTW) hooked up to the HDMI 2 port.
When using the HDMI cable, there's intermitten signal loss, almost like the TX-47F thinks there's nothing connected to the HDMI 2 from time to time...and all I get is snow ....BUT
when I use the component cables, I have no problems, no dropped signals.
(yes, the component cables are limited to 480 resolution with encrypted DVD's (what a bummer huh?) but with DVD's that aren't encrypted I get the full 1080P (with upconvert).
My question is:
Is this a bug with the TX-47F? If so, I would like to submit this bug for documentation. If it's not a bug, is there any way to fix this? (BTW, my current software is 5121-1.3.0 October 25, 2007)

Thanks in advance :)

Please download your firmware from the westinghouse site by following their directions. I don't know how many times we have said this. While they may use similar components, the 47 and the 42 are not the same TV at all. I have not had one single issue with my 42 and the failure rate in this thread is quite low. Hi People,

I'm about to pull the plug on purchasing my first 1080P TV. I am between this TV... 42F430S (BestBuy) OR 42H240S (Costco's Version).

So the differences are a little confusing... Costco's has double the contrast ratio at 2000:1 and a faster refresh rate at 6.5ms but the Color Gamut 72% NTSC vers 75% for the BestBuy model.

The price is $675 for the Bestbuy one or $700 for the Costco Version.

Does anyone have any real life info to add regarding these two TV's.... on paper it seems the costco version may be better but I am still confused.

I would be using it as an OTAHDTV and for hooking up my computer to... not realy for playing blue ray.

Actually they both offer 1080Pure... which just means that the HDMI and other HD inputs can take a 1080P signal. But you are correct this one has 4 hdmi inputs and the other has 2 hdmi inputs.

How do you guys find the black levels? Is it my imagination or is the contrast ratio for this TV VERY POOR? I am seeing TV's that offer like 20,000:1 and this TV has 1,000:1? The contrast ratio is pretty average just on the low side compared to newer 1080p TV's. The ones that show they have 20,000 to 1 or other ridiculous numbers are using dynamic contrast ratio compared to a static contrast ratio that would be around 1000 to 1 or maybe 2000 to 1 at most. Just be sure to know which the manufacturer is actually using. You don't want to end up with a TV that you think has a 5000 to 1 contrast ratio only to find out they used dynamic contrast ratio and the static contrast ratio is 500 to 1.

If your trying to judge by the way it looks in the store then thats problem #1. For some reason they like to leave the backlight at 100 and turn the brightness up to unusually high levels. Ask for the remote and see what it looks like at about 50% backlight.

OK so I have an issue with the HDMI switching that is forcing me to NOT use the HDMI inputs on this TV:

Westinghouse decided to give every input on this TV its own unique IR code to switch to EXCEPT the HDMI inputs, which cycle through with the same HDMI video button press. So my problem is, I have 2 HDMI devices connected to the TV and I use a universal remote. The universal remote just sends the "HDMI" command to change the input, which of course lands on the WRONG input most of the time. So right now I'm using the VGA input for my computer, and a Component Video input for my DVR. OK so I get full resolution and the computer looks great, but the DVR looks like trash.

So my question is how do I solve this problem?
1) Are there unique HDMI1, HDMI2, HDMI3, HDMI4 IR commands to switch inputs? If there are someone please point me in the right direction!
2) Is there a way to disable HDMI3 and HDMI4 so when I press the "Input HDMI" button it only cycles between two of the inputs? (Which means most of the time it is going to be on the right input)

Some more information: I use a Harmony remote.

Also, the HDMI inputs occasionally won't show video. Sometimes I need to cycle through all 4 inputs again, sometimes I need to turn off/on the TV, sometimes I need to pull the power cable out of the back to reset the TV. I'm guessing my issue here is that I'm using cheap generic HDMI cables. Would THIS CABLE (http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10240&cs_id=1024004&p_id=3661&seq=1&format=2) be any better?

Any help to bringing sanity to this setup would be so deeply appreciated!

I use a Harmony Xbox 360 remote on my set (VK4240FS) and it hits the HDMI sources with no problem. Did you update to the latest Logitech software? I have my HD DVR on HDMI 1 and PS3 on HDMI 2, and the Harmony has no issues on switching between the two (I don't even hit HDMI 3 or 4 cause I have no "activities" for those inputs programmed so it just "skips" those inputs).

I also am using the cheapest Monoprice HDMI cables for both components and no issues whatsoever. Then again, our sets could be different but I think they share most of the same parts.

It's not the cables. I have that problem occasionally. Sometimes when I try to switch from my PVR to digital cable box, I either get a green screen or it stays on the PVR even though the label on the screen says STB. I have to turn on my DVD player which is on another HDMI input and it always switches to it. Then I turn off the DVD player and switch back to the STB and it's OK. This only seems to happen when I have the PVR powered up, since it's the only device that's outputting an HDMI signal all the time. When I had it switched off for a month, I never had that problem.

Wait so your harmony remote has discrete IR commands for switching to HDMI1 and HDMI2? Or is it smart enough and sends the IR command "HDMI" several times to switch from HDMI2 all the way back to HDMI1?

I'll answer for him. The harmony remote doesn't have unique IR commands for the HDMI inputs. It keeps track of what input you are currently using, and then cycles through the inputs to reach the correct one when you switch activities.

I wish my harmony worked that well. I'm not sure if it has to do with the delays in the remote (or maybe in the tv?) but it NEVER winds up on the right input and always only sends the HDMI command once AFAIK. I thought I had a pretty advanced knowledge and understanding of how the harmony worked, but I guess I could have overlooked something.

In every activity I have programed into my harmony, I customized the first two on screen buttons to always be "video input" and "audio input" because it almost never winds up on the right video input. The receiver however, changes to the right input 99.9% of the time.

For those of you using the Harmony with this series of TV, what are your settings for this device? (Delays and such)

You know, I have no problem controlling this T.V. with the codes for a Sony WEGA TV and my PSP. It seams it is using the old WEGA CRT codes. My Universal remote that came with my cable box cycles the HDMI just fine.

On an interesting note I just checked the program and the old WEGA code for TV/Video cycles the inputs but in two jumps almost every time. The Scientific Atlanta remote for my DVR gets it right every time. I have also noticed that the remote that comes with it is less effective than the Universal Job.

Just use a DVI-HDMI cable. DVI is a digital signal, while VGA is analog. This is probably why its happening. I used a dvi-hdmi cable on Vista with a 7600GT and it displayed it perfectly at 1920x1080. Too bad games arent really playable w this card at that res though.

I have TX-47F430S and with part number TW-51201-L047A. I have software version 5110_1.1.0 and build time April 13, 2007.
I try to download the firmware from the site. First I was asked to register the product. After I registered the product, I put my sn, model and part number. The response I got was "Sorry. Updated firmware is not available for this model at this time."

Any one got same as mine?

Thanks.

I have the same as you and I've never been able to get the registration and download part to work. Did you ever have luck?

To all with the "HDMI switching Issues" the issues are because the TV really doesn't have separate HDMI in's it is a HDMI switch more or less and a very poor one. I have a separate 3-1 HDMI switch I got long before having my 47" Westy I only use the 3-1 switch and my Onkyo 605 to give me a total of 4 HDMI in but only use a single HDMI in on the Westy. Using it this way I get no issues with HDMI in at all and don't ever have to switch to HDMI 2,3,4. I have a HD Dish Network box, PS3, 360 Elite, PC all connected using the switch and 605 and I use a Sony RM-VL600 remote I got for $10.00 and it switches inputs to the HDMI switch and 605 if needed with one button push much easier than doing it through the TV. The HDMI switch came with it's own remote that just has 3 buttons on it to switch to the different HDMI ins I tried a Harmony remote in the past with it and it couldn't control it at all but since the Sony remote has a learning function it had no problem doing it for me. Besides the PS3 I only use one remote for everything thanks to the Sony remote.

Here's a link to my Harmony settings. There are no single key commands for discrete HDMI inputs but you can use key sequences to accomplish the same thing.

ANy help from here would be appreciated as wde tech support was worthless.

it happens to me exactly same
anyone has any idea?
