View Full Version : Official Westinghouse TX Series ( TX-42F430S, TX-47F430S ) Owner's Thread
Carsfanatic 02-19-09, 01:13 PM I think I actually just had my TV die last night I usually leave it on when I go to sleep. I have to have some kind of noise or the other "background" noises make it so I can't sleep. Haven't had a problem until this morning when I woke up it had the No Signal on screen. I figured my Dish Network receiver just needed to be reset(happens a lot because I use all the HD outputs sometimes it turns HDMI off) After reset it still didn't work so I tried my PS3 and nothing there. I tried the OTA tuner and nothing there so knew something was wrong. I unplugged it from power and will have to try it when I go to lunch.
Actually kind of hoping it is dead and nothing works on it, it has been less than a year since I bought it and hopefully I can just pick out a new TV.
Checked the TV at lunch unfortunately it works. I don't know if it was just loose HDMI going from receiver to TV or what. I had unplugged the HDMI when I unplugged the power this morning. When I reconnected the HDMI and power and turned the Dish box on and the receiver everything popped on like normal. I also forgot I moved the antenna coax cable from the TV to my Dish Network box to see if I got the stations in better than I use to and I did so I left it there so explains why the OTA tuner didn't work either.
I was hoping it was dead so I could pick something new out since I don't even see them selling Westinghouse TV's at all only small monitors.
JRockTheShocker 02-19-09, 01:42 PM Just wanted to ask a favor if anyone can check this easily for me. I am looking for the measurements of the REAR part of the BASE for the TX-47F430S. I am mounting this tv in a custom space and need to cut a notch to allow the stand base to slide back about 2".
I know the whole base is 10.5" deep, but I am looking for height and width. Many thanks to anyone who can help me out.

My base is not 10.5". Measured with a 4' square the base (front to back is 8 3/4")
On my TX-47F430S. the picture tells all. Pictures taken from Left Rear and measured from same vantage point. The base has a slight bulge in the front giving it a balanced stance/footing. ADD 1/2 INCH

captainalias 02-20-09, 01:41 PM I have this strange issue where I can't get any sound from my high-definition FOX (WTTG- Wash. DC area) channel, 108.3.
All my other channels work fine, so I'm assuming it's not a TV issue. I remember I used to have this problem, and I could get the sound to work by cycling through one of the audio options (don't remember which), but it's driving me nuts.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

irshliquor 02-20-09, 07:10 PM I have finally grown tired of dealing with the flickering HDCP issues with my PS3 and the other quirks that go along with the TX-47f430s. I was one of the first to purchase this set (June 2007), and I am hoping that the problems I have been having manifest themselves while the tech is at my house on Friday. I have the 4 year Best Buy PSP, so I'm hoping to obtain authorization to replace my TV.
Anyone have any advice or experience getting their TV replaced for HDMI flickering (random) and pink line along the bottom using Component @ 1080i?
So the tech came out and he was trying to explain to me that it's a fact of life that some TV's aren't compatible with the PS3 - I told him that it has worked just fine before and he told me that he will order me a new "Main I/O Board". He also said that some manufacturers lie when it comes to whether or not their stuff is compatible with things like the PS3. I told him, regardless Best Buy now has the responsibility of making this right as the seller of the product and as the entity issuing the warranty.
I also explained to him that I was under the impression that this is a TV that parts can not be ordered for, he looked at me confused. He seemed to be very much in a hurry and did not want to facilitate me in the least.
I am VERY knowledgeable when it comes to technology and this kind of stuff and I hate it when people try to talk down to you and in doing so sound like idiots themselves.
So now it looks like I'm stuck waiting for at least 15 days until they can get a part for me (I have one of the very first batch with 2007 April 13 build date with Software Version 5110_1.1.0). I'm crossing my fingers that what ultimately takes place is they can't get the part and offer to replace the set for me.
Anyone else that's been down this road want to offer up any advice for me?

From reading this thread your going to need to stay on top of BB to get this done, Expect at least 2 months of screwing around and then you will probably get a chance to pick a new TV.
timalan 02-21-09, 12:09 PM I just filed a complaint. Here.

If we all did it. Maybe they would force Westinghouse to recall this TV.
It has worked for me on other products.

anyways. I bought this TV yesterday for dirt cheap(600 after taxes). I set the colors and it looks as good as my friends Sony (at 42 inch for 600 bucks, I'm amazed). I've played Blue Rays on my PS3, looks and acts phenomenal as well. I see the occasional person in here say they have no problems, and everyone that is complaining mentions playing around with it in some way, which isn't really my style, so my question is, should i just stick with it at that price, buy the 4 year plan for 100 bucks and stick with it, or just give it up...I'm reluctant to give it up but this board is scary to think about keeping it?

I've had mine for around a year and a half, with the only thing being the occasional HDMI handshake issue, but that's the only thing I have had go wrong......so far;) we'll see what the future brings. Glad I got the 3 year warranty from BB.
I'm assuming the handshake issue is probably what is causing my PS3 games to have no sound? It's fricken weird, Blue Rays and the menus have sound but as soon as a game loads, nothing...I really know I'm in for at least another 400-600 hundred if i return this TV so if it's minor, I can deal for a year or 2 (then return it under Best Buy's warranty if it goes out), no sound on the PS3 is not really minor as that iks what I bought the thing for...Any thoughts??? If you just bought this TV and it is within the first 30 days I would take it back and get something else. Your money is best spent on something with a brand name on it. You can get some good deals on 46" name brands for 300 to 400 more.

Thanks for your humor, no more cat. tell me how your PS3 is connected to the Westy? Be as exacting as you can please.
How is you PS3 set up to push to external audio?
Warm Regards
It's connected via the HDM1 port via some best buy generic cable, so when I reset my entire PS3(since my last TV was 720p) to 1080p, it automatically flipped over and the sound appeared to work(for now and forever I hope.)...If that changes, I'll definitely be back, you all seem to know your stuff and I'm scared stiff of downloading firmware into electronics for the fear somehow if it breaks, they'll blame me and void the warranty (prior experience). I used some visual settings I saw here, and I'm telling you, my set is gorgeous picture wise watching Dark Knight and College BBall (for what I paid, yeah, if I paid 1000 to 2000 more I probably would see better, but that's the point.). I saw a few pages back that the April 2007 run has been somewhat more reliable, that's what mine says in system info, so I'm hoping for the best(it says firmware 1.1, which has me a bit worried, but I'm thinking I'll ride it until it bucks me for now)...It's a difficult gamble, I definitely need to invest the 100 into the warranty it sounds like...And thanks, cats frighten me, hahahahaha
Woobieizer 02-22-09, 07:02 PM On your PS3, go to "Audio Output Setting" choose "HDMI" choose "Manual" choose
Dolby Digital 5.1 Ch.
Linear PCM 7.1 Ch. 48 kHz
two selected Linear PCM will be defaulted and can not be modified.
You did not indicate using an Amp. so your game should play via "internal" TV speaker now.
If you have an amp same:
I run from the PS3 to the Westy via HDMI port 1 set for Digital audio/Mixed via TV Audio Settings (grants me sound without powering up amp.)
Then
I run from the TV via SPDIF to my Sony Amp to an available Optical input. (grants me Dolby Digital from Movies on DVD, if I set the PS sound option via Green triangle during playback to Audio Setting "Bitmap". Bingo
Games displaying Dolby Digital 5.1 or better will only play via PCM Linear thru the TV and AMP. So if you want Dolby Digital on your game, get use to the PS3 "Audio Output Settings" Menu.. un-check "Linear PCM 7.1 Ch. 48 kHz" thus bypassing/give up sound to internal speakers of TV and relay on you power hungry AMP.
"Forrest Gump" that's all I have to say about that!
MattyB4g63 02-24-09, 10:40 AM Hi there im new to the boards I just got this tv yesterday and im getting really bad purplish colors on anything that is white and then when the screen shows black I get fuzzy lines. It happens with my 480i cable and my xbox360 which is hooked up through component cables. I have tried messing around with every setting possible it gets a little better but is still noticeable, I do run a wireless router right under my tv think there could be a interference problem anybody have any suggestions? I have tried searching and browsing previous pages and couldnt find any info. Also I have the newest firmware.

Although unlikely, it is possible the wifi router is causing interference. I would test by powering off the router. Also, make sure there are no external unshielded magnets (possibly speakers) near the screen.
Neither of those things traditionally cause interference in LCDs, but if you have a faulty cable or connector they could cause problems.
If you are still having problems, you may have just gotten a lemon. I would contact the seller and/or Westy as you are covered by the warranty.

jcapellman 02-26-09, 09:25 AM Like a lot of people on here, I have been having trouble updating my 9/2007 511_1.2 firmware to the latest. I just gave up.
But something I'm having a problem with is between my Pioneer 918V receiver and the 42" Westinghouse are not sending my HTPC's HDMI signal. I know HDMI works as it has worked when I had a Media Extender and my Panasonic blu-ray player hooked up to my receiver via HDMI.
I finally got the HTPC working with the hdmi directly connected to port 1 of the TV with audio and everything this morning, but I don't know what setting made it all work. I have the resolution set to 1920x1080x32 @ 60hz. It's a Radeon 4350 with a HDMI port right on it using Vista x64. I have the latest Catalyst drivers and the latest Realtek ATI HDMI drivers.
The weird thing is under the Catalyst Control Center it detects the Pioneer 918V and shows it as a display device, but the Westinghouse and Pioneer don't detect the signal. Any ideas?
kanigit 02-26-09, 02:48 PM Just thought I would post to report a successful motherboard replacement. Just the other day I began having issues with the TV just flashing the logo and never coming out of standby. I tried flashing the firmware and it was unsuccessful. I eventually bought a new mainboard off ebay for $150 and it has been working great ever since.

Do you have the 47" or the 42"? What model number of board/ebay auction number did you buy?
Has anyone recovered from a bad firmware flash by replacing the mainboard in the 47"?
kanigit 02-26-09, 08:40 PM I have the 42 but I dont see how the 47 would be any different. Actually the motherboard for the 47 is only $100. Heres the link:

That one's listed for the TX-47 but it's got the DB-15 Monitor in on the wring side--it's the wrong part.
Which one did you use for your 42"? Westinghouse lists the same part number for the 47" and 42".
kanigit 02-27-09, 01:12 PM Heres the exact part:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&item=260361852058
Now that looks like the correct part for the TX47. I wonder if it is the same part as the TX47.
I found a couple sources online listing that part as the one for the 47 (mainly from folks who had it sitting open on their dining room table waiting for the part to arrive.)
It's got a 470 in the part number (W470PROLX68) which leads me to believe it'll work for the 47.
I bought one. Results will follow next week.
Sparky15 02-28-09, 02:17 PM I have westy RX 47, could someone help me to set up the different settings for best viewing on this set. So far I have no problem with this set. I like it, I paid only $400. Also upgraded the FW to 163. Only the black levels are not very good.
Thank you;)

Best Buy will try to order the part but chances are it will be too expensive. They should offer to replace your TV. I just got done with this after 5 weeks of pain. They did not call me back when they promised and I was out of the loop the whole time. I am supposed to go to Best Buy tomorrow to see what they have to offer as a replacement. I would rather have cash so I will see what happens when I tell them I don't want any of their TVs.

irshliquor 03-10-09, 11:55 AM I am no longer the owner of the TX-47F430S. Best Buy tried to order me a "Main I/O" Panel, and after 14 days of waiting I got them to issue me a Return confirmation # under my 4 year PSP.
I was able to trade the TV and got a Samsung LN46A650. PQ is Night & Day. There are a few quirks about the new TV, but I suspect after toying with the settings, I will get it to the sweet spot. Black levels are extremely deep and rich, motion blur is almost non-existant (even with Samsung's Auto Motion Plus turned off), and my PS3 looks amazing in Game mode. Any other mode produces slight input lag on the PS3, but Game mode has none.
I am not looking back, and will never buy a Westinghouse product again. Originally, I had the LVM-42w2 (replaced 3 times within the 30 day return period due to dead pixels) which was finally replaced by Best Buy for the TX-47F430S because of PS3/HDMI issues, and the TX had issues out of the box, but I stuck with it because I couldn't afford to upgrade at the time. My upgrade to the Samsung ended up costing me $103 out of pocket including a brand new 4 year warranty, because I was able to use a 10% off coupon this past weekend.
Once I realized that BB no longer sold the TX, I decided to go the service route with the ultimate goal of getting it replaced. I recommend if anyone has the 4 year PSP and you're even remotely unhappy with your set, CALL BEST BUY NOW and set up service. I am not 100% certain that they can not get parts, but I don't think I've read a single account online of Best Buy being able to get parts for this TV. If they order a part for your TV and after 14 days (not business days, calendar days) the part hasn't shipped (along with tracking numbers, not just ETA), you should be able to talk someone into submitting a replacement request on your behalf. Remember, you've gotta keep on top of them or you will slip through the cracks. All told, it took me about 5 weeks from when I called to when I walked out of my local Best Buy with a new Samsung.
After 3 weeks, I posted my concerns at the official Best Buy forums, and was assigned a very helpful "Community Connector" who was able to fast track my replacement request on the 14th day without parts.

Nice to hear you were able to get a new name brand TV out of the service contract, I wish I had followed through and went to the store to buy the contract as well but no, I'm now stuck with this piece junk broken TX47. I bought the TX based on my first purchase of the LVM-37 which was not perfect but at least didn't break down on me. Never again here either, I will only buy a name brand TV now with a service contract.

6 months is not the breaking point of this TV, Be prepared to buy a new TV at the 16 to 18 month mark, Several here had no big problems till this point and of course out of warranty at this point. Believe me the TX line is absolute junk.
OK, folks, breakthrough city. For those that updated the firmware on an older (v1.1) TX-47 and have the perma-amber LED, a motherboard replacement fixes the TV completely. A few things I've learned along the way:
1. If the firmware isn't available directly from Westinghouse, trust that no firmware upgrade exists for your TV.
2. If you own a TX-47 and are considering upgrading the firmware, just don't do it. There are circumstances where it's safe, but I'd suggest just living with whatever the problem is--especially if it's the image retention/ghosting issue I was originally trying to fix.
3. EBay has replacement motherboards for the TX-47, but the one I bought was actually labeled for the TX-42. They have the same model number according to Westinghouse, and I've tested it, proving it works.
4. Rely on a strong community when you buy new stuff. I was encouraged when I first bought this TV that the forums were alive with info--meaning that if I had an issue there would be someone else who already had it. Unfortunately, most of the news was bad on the TX series and I ignored it anyway (stupid).
5. If your current TV has a V1.1 firmware chip, a replacement motherboard with a V1.3 chip in it WILL WORK. I was concerned about this when I opened the box and saw the new board, but it's alright.
Let me know if there's anything I can help you on. It appears that if you have the green bullshit on the screen, a motherboard/lcd controller replacement works, and if you've bricked your TV due to a bogus firmware upgrade, a motherboard-only replacement fixes your wagon.
Have a good one,

Carsfanatic 03-11-09, 10:30 AM I have had the TV for less than a year and while it works okay it of course has some issues that up to this point I have just lived with. It is getting close now though to my year warranty being up in April.
I was just wondering if anyone else had dealt with returning it before the 1yr warranty is up and not having bought the extended warranty? What where your results if you did return it? Did they allow you to exchange it right away or did they have to send away for parts or something to try to fix it first? I use this in a spare room/computer/game room and use it every day I am home at least and really don't want to be without it. So just trying to figure out if I can return it and exchange it same day for another TV or if I have to deal with a couple of weeks without a TV at all before I can get the exchange?
Smitty2k1 03-11-09, 02:40 PM I just want to say that I recently bought a receiver (Denon 789) with HDMI switching and component upconversion to HDMI.
My Westinghouse now is ALWAYS on HDMI 1 input and my life is much, much better.
EDIT: Some more background:
I bought the 42" version back in early summer of 2007. My only problems with it have been the HDMIs quit working (probably 12 or so times in the last year and half) which was always solved by unplugging the power and plugging it back in a few minutes later. Also, the time to switch between HDMI inputs was awful. I've never tried updating the firmware nor do I know what version of firmware I've had. Zero dead pixels. This TV does a better scaling job than my new Denon AVR. So my AVR and my DVR are both set to pass through the signal instead of upscaleing it.

Do you recall the part number on the LCD controller for your TX-47? I see several different LCD controllers listed for the TX-47. I have been thinking of just trying to change that board out first since it is cheap to see if it fixes the corruption and green BS. I'm not finding anymore of the main boards at the moment on ebay. Maybe I will just have to open the TV up and take a look, Was hoping to avoid that before getting the part as I still use the TV at the moment.
timmymouse 03-14-09, 03:09 AM I have to 42" and i have been trying to update the firmware but im having no luck. Am i suppose to extract the files from the winrar or the contents of the .tgz file to my memory stick? also do i put the Safe-kernel.img1 file on my memory stick? thanks.
quattroG 03-14-09, 08:57 AM You need to unzip the rar file. So you'll have a bunch of files. These are what need to go onto your usb thumb drive. Make sure you have the drive formatted in the correct File System. Then just plug it in while the set is off. Power on, then the set does the rest. Just remember after the initial power on with the drive in the usb port, to remove it before doing the next power on/off.
Sparky15 03-14-09, 04:28 PM You do not unzip the second file, just simply unzip the downloaded rar file into the formated memory stick, unplug your TV and plug it back in with the stick in the TV and wait.
nascar24 03-14-09, 04:30 PM Take peoples warnings on this, Firmware upgrades for this TV seem to do almost nothing for you, They seem to do more harm then good if you notice all the bricking you read about in this thread.

How do you attribute a guy that is using a hacked firmware to not being able to brick the TV? Any TV that can do a firmware upgrades that fail will brick. As seen recently only way around this is a replacement of the main board. My point is every piece of released Westinghouse firmware is buggy so don't risk bricking your TV over it.
petek471 03-15-09, 11:41 AM Purchased at BJ's (very low price point) for use in a rental property. Any feedback on this model?

I was only going by the following statement that Saguratus made in that thread.
"Edit: Also wanted to mention, I have confirmed first hand that it is in fact very difficult to brick the LCD by doing firmware updates, as I've already corrupted the flash numerous times without issue. The trident bootloader (rebadged u-boot?) will always attempt to boot from the USB, no matter what condition the flash is in."

I don't know where he is getting his info or what exactly he is doing but anyone knows if your start writing a flash file to a chip, Regardless if it is a TV or a computer and it fails to complete it will become a brick! This is just the facts of life when dealing with any firmware upgrade no matter what piece of electronics you are dealing with. All you have to do is read this thread for the proof of such concept.

I just opened up my TX-47 to get the part numbers off the main board and the LCD controller, Of course unplugging a connector from the LCD controller and then having to plug it back in and then putting the whole thing back together and turn it on and guess what no more green crap all over the screen and no more color or screen corruption, We will see how long this lasts but it is somewhat promising, I know a few others had this same problem happen so taking it apart and messing with the connectors may just correct the problem. I will report back if it goes back to its old ways anytime soon. By the way part numbers for a first Gen TX-47 are:
Main Board: W470PR0LX68

I figured the boot up is minimal and keep it on energy saver. Also figure that it generates less heat and has less power running through it constantly so it might help for the TV to last longer too.

Looks to me like anything you can do to extend the life of the motherboard on the Westy is a good thing. But I'm wondering if cycling the TV on and off (letting everything cool down when its off) is better than leaving it in a standby (50W) state, which prolongs the time the electronic components are subjected to heat, thus reducing their lifetime.
I leave my laptop on all the time, but it has a lot of built-in power management circuits. Can we compare this to leaving a TV on?
I know there are a lot of engineers out there that can weigh in on this issue.
It's typically better for solid state electronics to maintain a constant temperature (on/off) rather than constantly cycling. Quality electronic components have a mean time before failure (MTBF) of dozens of thousands of hours.
Of course, that may not be the case with Westinghouse. I'll keep my LCD on standby rather than off just to try and keep the internal temperature constant.

jkpq: Point well taken. The question is whether Westy has chosen high quality components. And in standby mode, the components are in a warmed state, not fully on at the higher temps. So to those who have seen the motherboards on these puppies: can you tell if the major components (controllers, processors, etc.) are known-brand (brands anyone has heard of) or off-brand? At the price point I paid (<600 for a 42" 1080p) I would doubt Westy went to the top tier suppliers.
I'll take a look at the one I bricked when I get home tonight. I do know the one I replaced (v1.1 firmware) looked to be of poorer build quality/component content than the new board (v1.3 fimware).
Maybe the quality of components has increased over time--it seems those who have the most problems have older sets. Perhaps the newer units are experiencing the same frequency of issues, but people are just sending the TVs to the junkheap as they can be had for so cheap now.

You're right about the cheap part. My 450's cost a penny less than six hundred bucks last week. Maybe the modules on your bricked mobo will show the country of origin (no doubt China) although I'm not sure that will tell us anything.

Well all is still good at the moment, I would suggest if your having the green garbage and corruption problem I would open up your TV and take things apart and plug the stuff back in before buying anything. Really the only thing I unplugged was the LCD controller board.
Sturmur 03-19-09, 07:23 PM I have a LX-42 bought back in Aug 2007 and I have the perma yellow led problem as well. I opened up my TV and found that I have the W470PROLX68 mainboard. I see that some of you have had good luck in replacing it with the same board. I was wondering if there are any other places I can pick up the main board rather than ebay which is devoid of this type of part at the moment. Thanks.

Well you did confirm that the TX42 and the TX47 use the same main board. I wouldn't bet on a different model number board would work. Looking at it I bet the VGA port is on the wrong side anyways. Don't go by what these sites say the board is for as I have found them to be wrong more times then not when looking at the layout of the board. On a side note I couldn't find the board anywhere else either, A month or so ago there were a couple of the mainboards on ebay.
Well this is a great place to get informed!! After searching through here I found some fixes but still have a big problem with my TX-42F430S that I just purchased 3-10-09.
When running my PS3 in the HDMI the video will drop out at times and go to the infamous "snow" or "white" screen. I also get the sparkles on 1080p. The funny things is that if I re-select the HDMI input on the tv it comes back. And I'm so sick of getting shot in the face while I wait for my picture to come back!! :)
Now all the threads are saying to get a HDMI to DVI but is that the only way to solve this problem. Cause if it is this TV is going back. What good is having a HDMI if you can't use it????
Can someone please let me know if there is a solution to this that you might have heard of??!! Thanks a bunch!!
nascar24 03-27-09, 01:13 AM I haven't followed the whole PS3 thing since I don't have one but from reading about it the TX line and the PS3 do not get along well together and I have never seen anything that changed that. If you just bought it I would go get a name brand LCD knowing what I know now.
computor 03-30-09, 12:30 AM I apologize if this has been covered elsewhere.
I bought a TX-42F430S (refurbed) about a week ago. The TV worked fine for a day or so and the remote stopped working (the buttons on the side of the set still work). I have a universal remote that doesn't seem to work either. Everything else appears unaffected.
Searching the forums yielded some people complaining of the same issue. The only hint of resolution was a post that stated that their was an IR board that sometimes becomes loose under the plastic panel below the 'W' logo on the front. I removed the panel but there doesn't appear to be anything underneath it (only more plastic). Has anyone else had this issue?
NotSoCoolJ 03-30-09, 08:55 AM OK guys. I have a question for those who have had this bad boy apart. Mine has collected a bit of dust on the back of the LCD screen. I can see it in the corners when a light scene appears on the screen. How hard is it to access the back of the LCD panel? I want to take it apart and clean it but the last thing I want to do is break an FFC cable.

Well after opening up my TX-47 I was surprised just how much you have to take apart to get at the main board. I didn't do it because it looked like a real pain and that isn't what I was going for when I opened it up. After saying that I believe everything would have to be taken apart for you to get at the LCD. I wouldn't bet on it working again after doing that as there are a lot of cables that would have to be messed with to do that. I'm not sure you would be able to get to it either looking at the insides from the back, It seems the LCD is placed in a big medal frame. I'm unsure of how it is mounted in that frame. I would just live with your problem as I don't think it is worth the time or effort to get rid of it even if you could. Don't quite know how you could get dust where you are saying either.
MrLarryLarry21 03-31-09, 05:33 AM I am no longer the owner of the TX-47F430S.
Good luck!
My TX-42 started locking up whenever I would switch to or from VGA input so I called Best Buy for service (secretly hoping as you & others have posted that they would not be able to repair it).
After only 12 days they called me to say that the mainboard would take at least a month to arrive and so they were offering me a replacement!
I now own a Samsung LN40B550 for $0 (they originally offered my the LN40B530 which I was fine with but it was oos so they gave me the 550)!
PQ on the Sammy is shockingly better than the Westy...

captainalias 03-31-09, 02:55 PM Has anyone else had problems just watching HD channels? It seems to strike in particular when I'm watching Fox 5, but I'm noticing it on other channels more often.

Ace_of_Sevens 04-08-09, 08:13 PM I just bought an Onkyo 806 receiver and ran the HDMI signal from my PS3 through it and so far, it appears the drop-out issues are corrected. I don't know if this applies to other HDMI receivers.
I have the Westinghouse TX-42F45OS and I am having a similar problem with the EPG but I get nothing with it. Every channel it tells me unsupported which bull because my old TV picked it up just fine. And I have the problem with not getting digital audio out of the TV also even though I am using a spif cable and I know programing is in digital 5.1. How many complaints will Westinghouse have to get before they will fix theses problems?
apparently only in the first firmware for the 47" was the optical out working to receiver with the hdmi input to tv.
I have the same problem and hopefully someone could help me with this. as well what I hate is that my tv is mounted on the was and refuse to remove it off and take off my wall bracket to find my serial number so I guess a firmware update is out of the question unless someone sends me it.
I am fedup with all the problems with this tv. hopefully if someone can send me in the right direction with this optical out problem I would be a little more happy. I found a thread on this site where someone is working on custom firmware for the tx models.
no loss
nascar24 04-11-09, 09:25 AM Don't hold your breath on the sound being fixed, These TV's are considered old now and I believe out of production so its not likely your sound problem is going to be fixed by Westinghouse.

The opticalout on the tv wil only work with OTA.
OTA digital output is all I want from this TV and it won't even due that when I know the program is broadcast in 5.1.

As another guy stated the only Westinghouse that would do this was the first gen that got released. They took out the ability to pass the 5.1 I believe because it is some HDMI Dram spec.

There was an old firmware that use to pass 5.1 so the TV is capable of doing it as it should be for OTA only. It has nothing to do with the HDMI spec because no TV should pass 5.1 that is being input from HDMI out through the optical of the TV. As long as you are using the internal OTA tuner then you should be able to pass 5.1 just fine.

There is a lot of talk about the pass thru and the HDMI spec in this thread, I know it will take some time to find but that was the explanation on why it does not allow it anymore. All Dram related. This info isnt directly from me, Just info further back in this thread.
Edit: Found it for you, Go to post 4713, So as I said it is a Dram HDCP issue in that it is not allowed.

Wait a sec, with OTA, there is no HDCP or HDMI...
So, with my 42, I'm using the built-in tuner...getting HD OTA...the optical won't carry the 5.1?
So there is no way to get 5.1 audio with OTA HD content with these sets?

Correct you will not get 5.1 thanks to Westy and their bad firmwares. Since it use to do 5.1 with a past firmware we know it is capable of it.

Sparky15 05-08-09, 04:25 PM I've had my Westy 47" since January and had no problem with it. The picture is beautiful when using Sony Blue Ray. I think people had a problem with the earlier models but so far so good with mine. The best firmware to use is version 130. There is definitely issues with the latest firmware on the Westinghouse website.;)
One_crazy_dude 05-18-09, 11:59 PM hello
i have been reading and searching but can not find the problem i have with my tv here.
i have the tx 42" and one day the picture went out but the back light and sound works.i can even change channels just no picture or osd.
so off to a nearby mom and pop shop and the guy brings me in to my tv all apart and shows me the main board is working and that this little board under everything towards the top of the tv is bad he thinks.he says he cant get anything out of it and he called it a T connector.i later read it was a lcd controler(if that is correct) and westinghouse sells it together with the pannel only.
so i took it to another place and they to told me it is a board that is attached to the pannel and will coast the same as the first guy has stated.
is this the lcd controller ? i have my tv apart now and found on ebay and a store mentioned in this form for a 50 $ part.does it sound right to you guys before i buy it? thanks
If have 2 choices the Toshiba (also 1080p)and the Westinghouse, what's the first?
Sparky15 05-19-09, 11:59 PM Go with Westinghouse

cbeyond 05-22-09, 11:09 PM In short, Westinghouse = junk. My 47" went bad after
18 months. Westinghouse does not sell repair parts! The
part stores they refer you to have parts on back order for over
a year! Repair parts don't exist. The TVs are disposable.
Stick with a real brand name set, like sony, panasonic, samsung.
I learned this lesson the hard way. Best buy dropped them.
Sparky15 05-22-09, 11:25 PM ye,ye, all manufacture have problems, check it out....
hyrific 05-23-09, 11:48 PM O have the TX-47F430S tv and it won't handshake with my reciever. The reciever is a onkyo reciever that is part of there 6100 Home theater package. I can't find the 1.3 firmware to try. And I don't even know what firmware I have.
I have been searching this posting for any help on what people who have had this issue did to resolve it with no luck. I get a snow picture then a picture of the signal than black over and over again. What did any of you do to fix the device syncing compatability issues?
The tv works just fine with my computer.
Let me know I will keep looking though the forum.
Ace_of_Sevens 05-24-09, 03:52 PM Did we ever figure out a way to fix green and red push on this set?

Hi, all! I hope this is a new question, at least partially. My Panny BD-30 worked fine with my TX-42F430S until the other day when the Verizon guy came and hooked up my new Fios box when I was at work. He couldn't get the TV to pick it up, so I had to tinker with it and do the factory reset of the TV. After a while I got the Fios box to show on the TV. However, professor Verizion in all his wisdom had decided to unplug my bluray player for some reason. I've tried all I can think of - multiple TV resets, Panny firmware update, Panny reset. swapping cables, disconnecting Fios, reconnecting Fios, etc. I just can't get the BD30 to handshake with the TV. Most times when I turn the PAnny on, the Westyh will say "Detecting" for about 2 seconds, literally. Then, if I switch the cable to a different HDMI input, most of the time, it will say detecting for about 10 seconds, but with no results. I've tried having the Panny on when doing a TV reset, having the panny off, having the HDMI cable not even connected to the TV when doing a reset. I updated the Westy firmware to 1.3 last spring. I've heard some folks talk about 1.6, but when I try to download new firmware of the Westy site, it gives me a pachage whose newest file is 1-22-08 (before my last firmware update). I'll try it anyway. Any tips? Use a sledgehammer?
Thanks,
Diz :(
FW update to Westy did nothing as expected. It didn't change the Westy fw from 1.3. Anyone have success with an auto-switching hdmi hub that is not too expensive? Open to suggestions. Thx!
It appears the fool from Verizon managed to screw up the hdmi output on my Panny bd30. That's talent. The BD30 won't show up on my sharp LCD either, even with a different HDMI cable. Component out works fine. Verizon will pay, or else.
Hope you've enjoyed my saga. Feel free to append. : )
ChandlerL 06-12-09, 04:08 PM Do you have the 47" or the 42"? What model number of board/ebay auction number did you buy?
Has anyone recovered from a bad firmware flash by replacing the mainboard in the 47"?
The problem re: the firmware update process is the instructions on Westinghouse's website are wrong for our model. When you unplug the power cord, then insert the USB flash drive with the firmware update and replug-- the TV flashes the set without telling you anything. The screen remains black while doing so (disconcerting to say the least). You don't have to instigate the flashing by doing anything (the instructions on the Westinghouse website tell you to power on the set, go into video settings, type in a service code, etc.).
In actuality, or at least in my case, the only sign I had that it's attempting a automatic flash is the normal orange/blue LED on the front goes kind of bluish white for a while then turns blue seeming to indicate the flashing is done. If anyone bricks their TX-47 TV, try reflashing it using the above information. Just wait out that bluish white LED until it turns blue, then unplug your set, remove the flash drive and see if the TV is back in business.
It worked for me after after a tense 20 minutes thinking I destroyed my TV just by plugging it in with the USB flashdrive inserted only to realize that I had unplugged it when I saw the bluishwhite LED on the front panel and was getting no response from the TV's power button nor the remote control while I was trying to follow the Westinghouse instructions. Since I got no response, I unplugged the TV which was flashing itself (who knew?) already and I interrupted it. I did so because I thought I had to begin the flashing response using menu items. *sigh* Now when I tried to power the set back on it wouldn't work (steady orange light and no blue light to indicate boot sequence along with sweaty palms). Crap...
After some reflection, I retried the process and this time, watched the bluishwhite light and then just waited it out-- eventually the bluishwhite light turned the normal blue (TV screen was still black). At this point, I unplugged the TV, pulled out the USB flash drive and replugged the TV. Powered on just fine -- noticed all my settings were reset-- went to check the firmware and viola, firmware indicated 1.4.2 (the latest version at the time).

Chandler
P.S. Perhaps the instructions are correct for different versions of the firmware-- just not certain.

I'm trying to update the firmware on my 42inch Westinghouse (TX-42F430S) following your instructions but I'm not having any luck. The firmware that I downloaded from Westinghouse's website is version 1.4.2 and my TV currently has version 1.2.0 on it. If I unplug the TV power, then plug in my USB key (with two files on it), and then plug the power back into my TV, then the only result is that the light on my USB Key flashes for about 5-10 seconds and then its light goes out. And the LED on the TV is orange and remains orange for ten minutes. Nothing happens after that. The USB key drive doesn't seem to have any activity at all and doesn't seem to be recognized by the TV beyond the first 10 seconds.
Any suggestions?
akajimmy 06-15-09, 07:24 AM So my wife picked up an early Father's Day present for me. The Magnavox NB530MGX Blu-ray player, from Wal-Mart. I can't get it to work through HDMI. I have tried two different cables. One other tidbit. The Phillips upscalere dvd player I had will not work through HDMI either. The component will work. But not HDMI. Anyone else see this?
Have you tried leaving the files in their parent folder on your usb key and vice versa? I remember I had to do one or the other to get it to work. Formatted FAT16 I think? Make sure there aren't any other files on the drive.
Good luck! Westy support is pretty nice - they may have a suggestion.

Yup. Make sure you format your USB key completely before using it-- some USB keys have a autorun partition on them that has some tools on it-- The TV may be seeing this autorun part and not the big space where your firmware is. In order to get rid of that tool partition on the key you may have to run the tools and tell it to remove them. I had to do that on my Sandisk cruzer before it would work.
Also when you plug your TV in, hit the power button on the set -- see if that turns it on.

After I made my last post, I attempted to upgrade my firmware from 1.2.0 to 1.3.0 and it was successful. I didn't notice any significant differences between 1.2.0 and 1.3.0. I then tried to update from 1.3.0 to 1.4.2, but it didn't work. I saw the same behavior that I previously described. So it seems to be a problem with version 1.4.2.
Were you guys able to update to 1.4.2? If so, which version did you upgrade from?
redmustard 06-17-09, 08:34 PM 6) EPG
The EPG could use some work. First, it doesn't appear to have a cache so it does not hold very much data. I personally don't receive any data except from NBC while using QAM - not sure if this is an issue with the set or if all the other stations simply aren't transmitting guide data. Here are some more problems as reported by meltdown100:
Hi Huggybear. Do you (or anyone else) know if Westinghouse plans to improve their EPG (the program guide)? As was said two years ago, there are a lot of improvements that could be made. I'm running 1.3.0 firmware on my TV.
karmasore 06-17-09, 10:15 PM i have been considering upgrading the firmware on my TX-42F430S. however im running into a small problem. i am given an incorrect Part Number when i put my serial number in on the westinghouse website . The file name I downloaded is 01_OSD_FW_V1.4.2.rar
im also having some image persistence issues with the "no input signal" box at the top of the screen. will a firmware update remove this problem?

I'm pretty sure that it will be safe. But if your TV is like mine, it won't even accept the 1.4.2 firmware. The highest I could upgrade mine to was 1.3.0.

Do you mean that the "no input signal" box appears to be burned in to the screen? If that's the case, then it sounds like a physical problem that can't be solved.

Yeah, it does appear to be "burned" into the screen. I was under the impression that LCD's cant burn in hence why I bought a LCD. I have read a little bit about image persistence and it seems like it's an issue that may be able to be fixed. I think I remember reading somewhere that a firmware update fixed another persons westinghouse that was having the same issue as mine..
I have a TX-42F430S. The only options for aspect ratio change are "standard", "fill" and "overscan". No "streach" is offered to change a wrongly displayed 16:9 image that appears as 4:3. My Blu-ray player is an LG BH-200 which doesn't help much either, since it doesn't offer options for "streach".
Does anyone know of a newer firmware that may offer more options for changing the aspect ratio? Also, does anyone know what all of the various Westinghouse updates do in terms of the fixes they address?
Thanks!

Yeah, the Westy seems to stretch some 4:3 images to fill the screen on "Fill", but with some 4:3 channels on my cable, it just makes it a bit wider. I'd take another look in the old LG manual or make a post on the LG area of the forum. I've never encountered a DVD player that didn't enable a selection of aspect ratio. Are you using hdmi or component?

Hey, Dizzie . . .
Thanks for your help.
The LG BH200 player is a combo Blu-ray / HD DVD player. A lot of folks have had trouble with it giving proper aspect ratio - mostly with standard DVD titles that were shot for 4:3 viewing. The player wants to stretch the pic to the 16:9 (full screen). The player only has options for the type of TV it's connected to (16:9 or 4:3). When connected to the Westy via HDMI, the LG player only offers the 16:9 option - which makes sense.
If you check out the forum here for the combo players, it seems a lot of folks are hoping a firmware upgrade will fix this issue. I am hoping that Westinghouse might have an option for stretch, which it doesn't.
I can only make the picture bigger with fill and even BIGGER with overscan.
Please let me know if you find anything which might help.
THanks again!
Ian
@teeger (Ian)
So, to clarify:
Are you seeing a wide picture that you need to decrease the width of? Or, are you seeing a narrow picture that you need to stretch out? Or both?

CGriffiths86 07-07-09, 09:17 PM I recently went to the Westinghouse site to check on the latest firmware for my 42" TX-42F430S. It gave me the download to the 1.4.2 update and I followed the steps for upgrading. The light on my set never changed colors and now the television will not come on at all? Any help would be greatly appreciated..I'm freaking out.
Have you gotten it working again yet, CG? If not, I suggest trying again - the firmware probably didn't finish its job for one reason or another. Make sure you follow the instructions step by step starting with a newly formatted flash drive. Once you unpack the zip to the drive, don't tinker with it. Not on a Mac are you?
If all else fails, call Westy support - perhaps their website gave you the wrong firmware for your part number, which you will need to have handy when you call. This is not the model number. You'll find it on the back of the TV.
Good luck!!!
MCHolden 07-08-09, 02:31 PM Just wanted to post my experience with this TV. Bought the 42", refurbished, from macmall.com for under 5 hundy! Got it 2 days later, hooked up the xbox, wii, and an antenna and started testing. First thing I noticed was the base stand was significantly warped and bowed up on one side but I could deal with that for the price. Xbox 360 looked amazing at 1080p over component cables (doesn't have HDMI out), Wii looked great over the A/V connection, and the tuner worked just fine - my local HD channels were beautiful (1080i and 720p). I also hooked up my PC via VGA cable and got it to work with little fuss at 1280x768 which looked incredible, no blurry text or overscan of any kind. Got it to sorta work at 1080p too, but there was intermittent flicker and blacking out so I reverted back to 1280x768. The text and icons were too small to read at 1080p anyway! =) So, nice big TV (my first HD), unbelievably cheap, and everything was working... I was king of the world! Then...
Started having problems turning back on after a shutdown. Googled it and found this thread, then started getting concerned. I can get around the shutdown problems with the 10 second reboot or just unplugging the set for a few seconds... truly annoying but again, for the price maybe I can deal with it.
Then I decided to test out the HDMI inputs. Oh boy. Connected a working HDMI cable to port 1 on the TV, reached to grab the other end to plug into my PC's HDMI out (AMD 780G mobo w/ onboard HDMI) and GOT ELECTROCUTED!!! Not a full 120 volt jolt but it definitely hurt. I can only assume that would have absolutely fried my mobo on the PC had I actually connected that cable. Ports 2 through 4 didn't shock me so I tried all three of them and couldn't get a picture at all, even though my computer detected the display, even identifying it as a Westinghouse! Tried power cycling, reboots, connecting things in different order, tweaking in the Catalyst Control Center, and every other trick I could think of and got nothing. Deal breaker.
Now I'm noticing even further annoyances such as picture dropping out when using the tuner (sound still comes through clearly) and a tendency to lock up when switching inputs. So far I've been able to overcome all these little glitches by power cycling the TV but I just can't trust it anymore, especially with the dead HDMI ports. I could try messing with the firmware updates but I'm beyond tinkering at this point. Called MacMall yesterday and was pleasantly surprised that it only took about 20 minutes and three "you need to talk to this department" transfers before getting an RMA - not too bad.
Now I'm waiting for my shipping label to show up in my inbox so I can send it back. In the meantime I'll continue to enjoy the TV for gaming and watching videos from my PC (over VGA of course). I'm really disappointed because when this TV works, it's really nice. Nothing fancy but certainly great for the price. The worst part is that I now have to wait around for another good deal to pop up before purchasing a new TV, and having this one around for a week really spoiled me. I may or may not go with another refurb, but I know for sure I'll be staying away from Westinghouse. I realize all TV's can be prone to glitches and malfunctions of one kind or another, but this line seems to be absolutely PLAGUED by them. Best of luck to those of you who own one that still works for you.
Kaldonis 07-14-09, 05:25 PM Looks like my TX-47F430S is getting replaced under extended warranty (the company is W3 Solutions), but as far as I can tell Westinghouse doesn't make a 47" LCD HDTV anymore (just a monitor).
Just wondering if anyone has experience with W3 and could let me know what to expect, whether it will be a credit or whether they'll replace it with another brand, etc...
Thanks !
akajimmy 07-15-09, 09:10 AM I started getting striping along the right side of the screen, ( I bought the BB replacement plan-thank goodness). The Geeks came out and took a look at it and ordered the parts. ON July 23, they will be coming out to replace. I am going to have him take a look at the HDMI issue too.
Dopeeye 07-15-09, 09:28 PM New guy here, so take it easy on me...
Got a TX-47F430 connected to a HD4350. When I initially connected it no problems with the display, just the fact that the HDMI audio does not feed to the audio out. I updated the firmware and now i get the flicker and dropout problem when I have the PC displaying on the TV. No problems on the 1080i dvd player or old school xbox or ps2. My plan was to rollback to the original firmware but i have not been able to find that. No contact to customer service yet.
Thanks

I think I posted last the 1.3.0 firmware which was the last stable FW put out by Westy.
It has been reported as working for both 47" and the 42" there are several posts by different members with 42" trying it and it was a download for the 47" direct from Westy so should work for everyone.
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=15031084#post15031084
The second link is the one you want it is the 1.3.0 the first is 1.6.3 which doesn't work with 1080 sources at all.
Dopeeye 07-15-09, 11:24 PM Awesome!

Thank you!
I've had my 42F403S TV for over a year now -- and mostly it's been "fed" 1080p material via Blu-ray and HD DVD. However, I recently started to notice the image "jitter" or "jump". It's not hugely jittery -- it looks like the image is bouncing slightly up-and-down - somewhat shakey. After playing around with the TV and a couple of different HD players - it appears to be an issue with interlaced signals. Whenever I play a 1080i source (either from the Blu-ray player or an HD DVD player it happens. But when the players are switched to output 1080p, the jitter stops.
Does anyone know if this might be firmware fixable? Currently I have version 130 (Oct 2007 build). Some suggest that the 130 firmware was the last "good" firmware from Westinghouse. Is it worth the risk to try other versions (new or older)?
Thanks . . .
Ian
These damn machines give us too many problems!
Hi, teeger. Got the pm. On the previous issue with scaling the picture, the only thing I can think of, which is somewhat of a poor fix, is to use component vid cables to get better aspect ratio options on the player and/ or the TV.
On the latest issue of studder - did you try going into the TV menu and selecting or deselecting "deinterlace" in the "calibrate" area of "video" in the menu? Or, perhaps this would be solved with the old component vid cables as well...
Good luck and may the force be with you!
Analog-X64 07-20-09, 09:38 AM We purchased a TX-47F430S just about 2 months ago.
And we are seeing screen burn already?!@? how is that possible? I thought LCD's dont get screen burn.
Anyways, we use VGA + PC + Powerpoint to display information.
this is what the information shows.
Software Version 5110_1.1.0
Build - ON: 2007 April 13
I went to westinghouse website and put serial number: 5120J72300219A
and it does not recognize it as a valid serial number.
I need some advice. So would new firmware help with scren burn?

Some have reported that the "screen burn"/ghosting gets better with firmware but no one can say for certain. I would say if you can live with it and it doesn't make the TV unusable for you then don't change the firmware. If it is something you can't live with or stand to have then go up a few posts I did post the last stable firmware for the 47" and you can download it without your serial number.
Be sure to follow all directions if you download the firmware and it may take a few tries until you find a usb drive that works right with the TV.
Analog-X64 07-20-09, 12:48 PM I followed the instructions put the firmware on USB Stick.
Unplugged the TV, and put USB in. Plugged TV Back in.
Hit Power Button nothing.
the power light stayed in Amber mode.
I unplugged TV, Removed USB Stick.
Plugged TV back in.
Still nothing.
Now what? TV is pooched?

Did you format the USB stick FAT32 before putting anything on it?
Did you unzip the firmware files to your computer first then put them on the USB?
Make sure you remove your USB drive via the OS properly too.
If you did all of that and there was nothing else on the USB other than the firmware then it should work as long as the USB drive plays well with the TV which some do not. If you have some other USB drive to try then try that too. If the Amber light has always come on and nothing else happened ie blinking Amber light then the TV should be fine if it went to blinking and then stopped and never showed a Blue light then it could've been bricked.
Try unplugging the TV for a couple hours if that doesn't work then try 24+ hours if nothing still then the only thing that could save it is getting a good firmware flash or replacing the board that holds the firmware in the TV with a different one.

Yes I followed the instructions 100%.
I plugged in the USB and plugged the TV back. GOt an Amber light and thats it.
So I thought ok USB not working. So I unplugged the TV removed USB and plugged the TV Back and again only amber and it wont turn on.
According the instructions the TV should have powered on and I should have seen the update taking place on screen.
I got none of that, and no flashing amber light nothing.
If I plug the TV back in, I get a quick Blue Light and than right into amber.

Thanks Dizzie for the great suggestion for selecting "deinterlace" ... I thought this might be what would work ... but damn ... I still get the "flicker / jump" in the display at 1080i. I'd love to get the display to "settle" without having to abandon HDMI. I've heard some say that the 142 and 162 firmware has issues -- but do you think it's worth updating from my current 130? I really appreciate your help and the good suggestion. I've been living with the scaling issue long enough now that it's not too important compared to 1080i looking like the image has been subjected to a very small earth tremor.

Analog-X64 07-20-09, 01:17 PM Is there any button combinations I can press while turning on to reset this thing?

Ya the instructions where wrong about the update showing on the screen. The only way you know the update is taking place is by the amber light and then some blinking amber followed by solid blue light when it is done. It can take up to 10 minutes for the update usually around 3-5 minutes though.
I have tried two USB drives that did not work so that is something to definitely try is a different one. Other than another drive and trying over and over again if it will not ever update all you can do is replace a board inside the TV to get it to work.

The TV is no more than 2-3 months old. It should be covered by warranty.

Then someone should update those instructions or not refer to them, otherwise people might brick their TV's which looks like what I did.
I didnt notice the amber light blinking on my TV, so who knows what went wrong.

I would try different USB drives/sticks first see if you can fix it but, don't take too long if it is only a few months old I would work on getting a replacement or if you have no other choice get the current one fixed. Though I have had good luck with mine many others have not. I would go with a new/different TV before I bought the same one.
Analog-X64 07-20-09, 03:06 PM Ok at this point it looks like I'm SOL. Warranty is 10 days past the 60 day warranty. Westinghouse wont help.
So either I take to repair shop or buy new board?
Where can I get a new board from?

Usually ebay is the best source for a board you can buy a DOA TV or just the board. If you search this thread you should be able to find info on what exact board and possible a part number for it.
Analog-X64 07-21-09, 08:57 AM There might be some hope?
Ok I took the TV off the wall and have it on a table so I can work on it easier.
I got a bunch of different memory usb sticks. So I have this 4GB kingston one.
Ok I formatted the USB Stick with Fat32.
I copied the update_lacd1080cx.tgz & safe-kernel.img1 both onto the stick.
Plugged into USB Port and Plugged the power into the TV>
Initially there is a lot of activity on the usb stick.
Then the activity stops and the light on the USB Stick blinks every 5-10 seconds.
So it looks like its not totally pooched.
Any suggestions, of something else to try?

Guessing you already tried every usb sticks you said you had from the "bunch"? Other than trying all of them not much else.
Leave it unplugged ie no power at all for 24+ hours then see if it comes back to life if not then try the firmware update again.

You can't "downgrade" to a 1.0.0. I think you can to a 1.2.0 but don't know if that was ever posted here. The older sets required that if you had 1.0.0 or 1.1.0 that you put 1.2.0 before changing it to anything higher than. That of course changed with newer sets/firmware but can't tell when they made that change for sure.

Wow, Analog, you have an unfortunate set of problems. I've never before heard of the Westy website not accepting a serial number - that's awful - definately worth a call to Westy support as all firmwares do not work for all models, even with the same model number! (crazy, I know) That's because Westy has a nasty habit of changing out components halfway through a production run. So, one TX-47F430S may have a different ware than another TX-47F430S.
Also - the TX-47F430S has a 1 year warranty of you bought it new, fyi.
All that being said, if you want to try putting a new, or even previous firmware on, remember one important thing - as I recall, you have to download the compressed file package directly to the root of the zip drive (no subfolders). Then, you have to unpack it within the zip drive, leaving the original compressed file within the zip drive. I used a freshly formatted SD card in a card reader and it worked fine for me. And yes, don't look for a nice on screen display updating progress. I hope you can get it to work!
Also - if burn in is a problem (sounds like you're using the monitor for a business application), try running a pixel fixer at night like www.jscreenfix.com or just putting it on a pure white screen for a few hours at night to remove any burn in.

What a good question. I know what I'd do personally, but I am more of a risk taker. I'm the one that always downloads the newest beta release update for software I have. I'd go to the Westy website and download ONLY FROM THERE the latest FW for my machine. I should temper that, though, as I am a bit odd in that sense. It is certainly worth balancing that with other peoples' experiences - like if they say that it will cause 1080p not to work. Do they say you can go back and downgrade in that case. The thing is - you don't know if you'll have the same experience or not because the parts in your TV could be different than theirs even if they have the same model number! Like I say, I'd go for it, but that's just me.
Cheers!
:)

NEVER download a file directly to a USB drive and NEVER unpack it on the actual drive that is the easiest way to corrupt the files/firmware and then just add another possible way to brick your TV.
Always format(FAT 32) the USB just before you use it. Always download the zip to the computer first. Always unpack the zip files to the computer first. ONLY add the unpacked files from the zip to the USB drive/stick not the original zip. One more thing to add is always remove the drive safely from your computer before you take it out to use on the TV.
For Analog I had the same problem or so I thought originally with the serial number I just had to read it off the back again and found out I messed it up so of course getting the correct one made the website work for me. Right now though you would only be able to get the 1.6.3 firmware which everyone has reported including me that 1080i/p sources do not work at all it cuts in and out constantly.

Seriously though you could've just looked in this thread if you searched for it. Others have reported that checking all the connections could be part of the problem too. You could try that right now from the google search no one has it in stock. There is a smashed up 47" on ebay you might ask the seller the model number/board number it is selling pretty cheap $99.00 if you do find the board expect to pay at least $150.

There are some boards on ebay but are slightly different as picture so I dont want to endup with the wrong board.

Good luck hopefully like you said they don't have them in stock and you can get your money back or credit towards a better TV.
akajimmy 07-23-09, 11:36 PM The panel on the Westy, started to band on the right hand side, it was pretty noticeable. Best Buy gave me a confirmation number to to do an exchange. The Westy is gong back and good riddance. :D
When I first got this Tv I thought it was great, the picture was great, but I am not sorry to see it go. I have had this TV for over a year. The problems I have had with the HDMI not working with the blu-ray was very disappointing, to say the least.
Many of the posts really indicate that Westinghouse products are of VERY poor quality. And what's worse, they don't even offer any REAL customer support. NONE! I called today regarding three issues with my TX-42F430S. The support was a women who addmitted that she didn't know much. She said she worked in TX - along way from the Caliornia headquarters - and the company she works for is new to Westinghouse (a third party simply answering the phones). What a joke.
If anyone can help I'd appreicate it. Here's my problem:
I can't update to version 1.4.2. Currently I'm running 1.3.0. I have tried a few different USB sticks to no avail. But, when I downloaded the firmware from the Westinghouse site (after inputing my TV serial) there were confirmation boxes showing the model number and the part number. My part number is TW-51122-C042A. The only part number shown on the download page was similar (on number different) -- it showed as TW-51121-C042A.
Can't the damned manufacturer put the right update to match a serial? I'm assuming that the update isn't working due to the part number mismatch.
Any ideas?
THanks.
Ian
Coreyb29 07-28-09, 10:03 PM A week ago my cable went out. When this happened my TX-42F430S froze and would get the W logo then nothing. I tried to reflash with 1.3 firmware from carsfanatic but now it just does the amber light nothing else. Westinghouse website surprise surprise does not reconize my serial# can any one give me the firmware that belongs on my POS from the factory please. The part # is L042A. Any help would be awesome thank you.
I just sent the following email to the guy I talked to in TX at the company who recently has been hired by Westinghouse to take customer service calls. He said he'd pass on my questions to the "engineer" in CA who knows how to support the product. I wrote the following email, asking that he forwards it to head office. Regardless, I will tomorrow look for an email for their corporate offices and sent it there directly. I've read over a lot of posts tonight and it really seems we are all basically cut off from any real relationship with a company that clearly has been producing substandard product.
Hello, John . . .
Thank you for trying to help me yesterday (Tuesday). I called you regarding a few continuing issues with my TX-42F430S. Please forward this to your engineer (or better yet to Westinghouse management) as I need assistance ASAP.
1. When viewing a source that is 1080i (not 1080p) the picture keeps “jumping” – looking like a small earthquake. The image just isn’t stable with an interlaced source. I’ve swapped out my HDMI cable with another and tried two different Blu-ray players and the result is still the same. I need to resolve this.
2. The LCD panel looks like it has “burn in” from program material that I’ve been watching. It isn’t permanent, since it goes away when turning off the TV and powering it on again. But, the burn in will then start to appear again after watching more television. I updated to firmware version 1.3.0 a few months ago hoping this would fix the problem – it didn’t.
3. I want to update to version 1.4.2. I DOES’T WORK! I input my serial # at the Westinghouse site … it gave me permission to download the file … BUT … there were a couple of “drop down” boxes which tried to confirm the model number and part number. The model number is correct for my TV. BUT, the part number shown on the firmware download page indicates this number: TW-51121-C042A – my television indicates a slightly different number: 51122-C042A. There is a problem here it would seem. What can I do to update the unit?
I have been a Westinghouse customer for a few years now. I have to admit that Westinghouse poorly supports its customer base. You might want to check out the manyh unhappy Westinghouse customers who have been posting to the respected AVS forum site. Here’s the URL: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=16905200#post16905200.
I’d appreciate it if you would send the AVS thread (with this email) to the engineers and management at Westinghouse. A few folks at AVS have recently discovered that there is VERY WRONG information provided by Westinghouse as to how to properly flash your televisions with new firmware. The written description is clearly WRONG. It’s both extremely frustrating as a customer to a) be provided WRONG firmware update info. by the manufacturer who should show better care in providing written instructions and b) never have had the privilege of talking with anyone EVER at Westinghouse who clearly knows anything about your products. This isn’t the fault of the folks who have been contracted to answer the calls – they are, from what I understand, working for a third party company who aren’t working with Westinghouse beyond taking calls relating to very basic concerns.
Please, John, let me know what you hear from those at Westinghouse who might know what’s going on.
Thanks again for offering to forward my concerns to Westinghouse in California. I look forward to hearing from you or a Westinghouse employee soon.

I'm so sorry to hear about all the problems people are having with firmware upgrades and finding no support for their particular part number - what a nightmare! I had high hopes for Westy. I think we should follow teeger's example and have our problems forwarded on to engineering - especially if our part number is not referenced!
On to my problem - HDMI input 4 is now the only input I have that will successfully handle a HDCP handshake. I purchased a 4-1 HDMI switch with remote from Monoprice. My set top box will work for about 5 seconds with the switch before going green-screen with audio. Bluray player only comes through on startup and then drops out when HDCP comes into play. Both these components work with the Westy when plugged directly into input 4. They are attached through good quality 25 foot Monoprice HDMI cables.
Has anyone had good luck with any other particular HDMI switcher model?
Thanks for any and all suggestions and tips.
Carsfanatic 07-29-09, 10:27 AM I'm so sorry to hear about all the problems people are having with firmware upgrades and finding no support for their particular part number - what a nightmare!
I use to use a joytech 3 x 1 HDMI switcher before I got my Onkyo receiver. It never had a problem with my 47" westy. Neither does the receiver now.
Thanks, carsfan! Any other suggestions from others are still appreciated : )

If you are having problems with the HDMI inputs on the TV and are past any warranty period you can also open it up and check the connections to the HDMI ports. Many others have reported loose connections and after pushing the connections together tighter it has fixed their problems.
Hey, Dizzie . . .
Sorry to hear you are having problems with your Westy. Surprise, surprise.
Maybe Carsfanatic's idea to open the set to reseat any loose connections will do the trick. Hope so.
If you want to reach a real tech / engineering support person at Westinghouse, why not drop John an email and ask him to forward it to the folks at head office in California? John's email: service@westinghousedigital.com. John said he's the guy who gets the email sent to this email address. I hope I hear something from them today.
No wonder Best Buy dropped the Westinghouse line. I wonder how long Costco will hang in with a comany who doesn't care about support? The Westinghouse experience is about as bad as it gets.
Hope this helps. Let us know if Carsfanatic's suggestion brings HDMI happiness back to your Westinghouse.

Today I got an email from Westinghouse head office after my serial number wouldn't generate a working firmware for my 42". They said the only download available for me is firmware version 1.6.3. Interestingly, Westinghouse had to send me a "bogus" serial number in order to trick their system into giving me the right firmware version to support my TV. Very werid. BUt it worked.
Question: If anyone running version 1.6.3 can check this for me, that would be great. . . does your sharpness setting do anything? Although I can increase the sharpness from a value of 0 to 100%, it doesn't change the sharpness - it's the same throughout the ajustment range. The deault is set at 33% and looks a bit too sharp, but I can't turn it down (or up).
Since all my settings have been reset with the firmware update, I'll set up the TV tonight to see what else works better - or not so good.
A quick observation: Running firmware 1.6.3 seems to make 24p material
(1080p setting on Blu-ray) show more "judder" than with firmware 1.3.0. Although this model (TX-42F430S) was marketed to support 24hz playback, I've never seen how it can being that a) there is no "film mode" offered and b) the unit doesn't run at 120hz, etc. If it DOES support 24p playback, has anyone figured out how to get it to smooth out the juttery playback?
Any feedback would be helpful . . .
Thanks!

Everyone who has tried 1.6.3 firmware has since reverted back to 1.3.0 since all 1080i/p content cuts in and out and makes the TV unwatchable. If it does work for you then you are the exception and the first one I have heard that has gotten 1.6.3 to work with 1080 content at all.

Carsfanatic,
You are so right! Even though I didn't have high hopes, based on the buzz about 1.6.3, I figured I had to give it a go - especially since Klaus at Westinghouse (an engineer) sent me a bogus serial # to get 1.6.3 to download. It was also a good way to see that Westinghouse apparently doesn't care about supporting their client base with working firmware.
If this company had any true intention to improve their products, how in the name of gawd did 1.6.3 get out the door???
I flashed the TV with 1.6.3 (the Westinghouse equivellent of "Swine Flu"). And man, right off the bat it screwed up with 1080p material. Once playback from a 1080p source began, the TV would freeze on the first image it "saw". A total disaster - yet 1080i works fine.
I've been talking to a few people at Westinghouse over the last day or so about several issues with their product, which they don't deny. They meekly admit that their customer base hasn't been supported.
Gotta wonder how many of us would ever go Westinghouse again.

I have no problem with playback at 24Hz and this TV at all. I am connected through a dvi-hdmi cable with my refresh set at 23.976Hz in a custom resolution created in my nvidia drivers. It looks like a soap opera.
Based on that info, this TV should do 24p from your player with no problem. Of course, this set isn't exactly known for the best firmware. So it may or may not work. All I can say is that your player should present the frames in exactly the same way.
lurchaddams 08-03-09, 08:05 PM I tried to flash my Westinghouse to a 1.3.0 and found out it does not support my Part Number/Serial Number. I went to Westinghouse.com and found that they only support 1.4.2 for my particular build.
Currently, my TV comes on IMMEDIATELY when it is plugged in. The LED turns blue briefly. Then, it turns amber and stays. There monitor never displays the "W" at any time. If I put a flash drive in (with the correct firmware) it does the same thing, except it reads the drive and the LED on the front flashes blue about 30 seconds after being plugged in. That is all it does.
Any tips on getting it to revive? Please note, I never have to turn it on. It comes on as soon as you plug it in.
TIA,
Lurch
Luca Brazzi 08-09-09, 09:27 AM Ive had my TX 42F430s for over a year now with no real complaints... until now...
Ive been using it for TV and Gaming, but I recently hooked a PC up to its VGA port and ran into a couple of problems:
- The max resolution I can get to work is 1280 x 768
- The TV doesnt automatically sync up with the VGA correctly so everytime I switch to the PC source (from HDMI/etc), I have to go into the TV Menu and tell it to Auto adjust otherwise the image will be WAY off centered to the right.
I dont mind the resolution issue much, but I dont like to have to do auto adjust all of the time. I even have to go back to auto adjust when the screensaver comes up and I return to normal (move mouse/etc).
NotSoCoolJ 08-09-09, 11:55 AM Interesting. When I first got this TV I used VGA at 1920x1080 with no problems. What kind of video card do you have?
Luca Brazzi 08-09-09, 12:54 PM Im using the built in graphics on an older DELL Optiplex GX280.
I can get a higher resolution 1280 x 1024 to display... but it doesnt fill the screen.
NotSoCoolJ 08-09-09, 05:28 PM your not trying to run a refresh rate higher than 60Hz are you. I'll bet you could get it to work just fine with a cheap off the shelf card.

This is the exact same problem I am having. I wonder if anyone has been able to bring it back from this, Or is it bricked.

Nope... running @ 60Hz. I did notice this...
When I switch the TV Remote from the HDMI input to the PC input the TV OSD displays the source (PC) and for resolution it says it sees 1368 x 768 even though the PC Video is set to 1280 x 768
Maybe its just time to buy a new computer or a better videocard Lol. Thing is... a plain old Flat Panel monitor that I had connected to this computer doesnt have a problem with it so why should my 42"?
NeuralMonk 08-18-09, 05:23 PM Okay, after a long ordeal with W, I found out something interesting.
Westinghouse used to support Digital Audio via HDMI to the TOSLink Digital output. However, due to DCMA pressure (not clear who), they were forced to remove it because the set decodes the HDMI, processes it for volume and EQ and was recreating it on the TOSLink cable. Thus, they were "copying" the digital content. This came from Trident and not WDE.
So they removed it via software.
Also found out that Trident is the maker of the software and not Westinghouse. Trident is under contract to provide break fix.
I know there is the VUE project out there that has died, but I am looking to see if I can force this issue with Trident.
Lastly, there are two different chipsets used in these models. It may have been possible to use the wrong software (in earlier versions) and brick the unit. The key is to get the correct software installed.
1.6.3 (garbage code) only has 1.3.0 or 1.1.0 as the options. Westinghouse has been notified that 1.6.3 should be pulled as it is garbage.
1.4.X and 1.2.X are the other options for the OTHER chipset. It may be worth it to try the odd set on a bricked unit. I have not tried it and I may be all wrong on this. Do not mix and match these.
The big thing I learned is that the power light does not always flash when it is updating the system. The best test is if your flash drive has an access light to watch the access. It will flash right away when it starts, then pause and cycle through this flashing, pausing 4-6 times depending on the software. I then am waiting 5 minutes beyond the last flash to make sure it is finish before cycling the power. Use your watch, not just your feelings of time passing.
Hopefully more to come.
PS I do not work there, I just spoke to someone very well informed.
@NeuralMonk - Wow, what info - interesting. Thanks for sharing. What is the VUE project, by the way?

My mistake, it is the VEW project (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1128245)
He was trying to get the source code from Trident because the software on these HDTVs has a core of GNU/Linux software. The kernel is Linux for sure, but neither Westinghouse nor Trident has released the source code officially.
HDTVdork 08-20-09, 12:18 PM Ok, I am officially an idiot.
I tried to upgrade my TX42F450S with the firware for a 430.
Result: the unit turns on but the ONLY thing I see is the amber power light that's it.
Is there any way out of this or am I officially hosed?
If I am officially hosed what are my options? Send the unti to Westinghouse?
I also tried to find the official firmware but the Westinghouse site does not recognize my serial #
I would appreciate any helpful tips, I already know that I am an idiot no need to post that again here :D
Well, Best Buy just came out yesterday to service the TX-47F430S because of several HDMI problems (all similar to the ones mentioned in this thread). They said they ordered a new main board (which I *hope* aren't available any longer), and made an appointment to install it in 2 weeks. We'll see what happens...
Just curious what happened in your situation. Did BB replace the set under your extended warranty or fix it? I've noticed my HDMI input seems to "drop" more often now (it flashes for a second like it's losing the connection) and it's starting to really annoy me. I still am under the extended warranty from BB, so debating making a call if they'll give me credit towards a new set..
Woobieizer 08-23-09, 05:30 AM Unflashed, and per Westinghouse's site.. Serial Number not recognized.. now I know there is a guardian angel looking after me.. even thought I purchased a 4 year PSP.. who wants that kinda trouble. prolly would have flashed this thing if I had not been so wrapped up in life, but after reading this post and glad that the angel's lost my serial number 'tween the cracks.

I keep my backlight down to "0" unless absolutely necessary to bump, yet never above 40.
I use custom setting, but I change, and know how and what I need to see, so don't ask.
Yes my PS3 lost sync some.. either going into or out of games.. yet a couple quick mashings of the "Input" button got me back to ground zero.
Off topic
But since miserly loves company. My 24 month 10 day old PS3 bricked LOL.. under extended warranty, and the day "Slim" was announced.
Good Graces to you all, and remember.. folk rarely stick around when things are going well, yet a few good sets were made and perchance I have one of them..
Excited to have read of the better fortunes of a few familiar faces that were able to stay composed to get the satisfaction they deserved.
cheers
EGOvoruhk 08-27-09, 04:55 PM Anyone recently go through a Best Buy repair? My set basically died on me, and I was wondering what other people's outcomes were
The guy at the store gave me a number to call, and said they should be able to fix it. I didn't really believe him, as the TV is pretty old. I didn't think they would have parts anymore
Luca Brazzi 08-30-09, 04:44 PM Thx for the info... I think Ive found out the problemo... I hooked up another computer that had 1920 x 1080 capability and everything was fine. I still dont know why it wont automatically center 1024 x 768 but at least I know how to get around it.
karmasore 08-30-09, 05:32 PM I am having the same issue with the "image retention." The no input signal box is definetly there. I have had it setup to turn off the TV after 5 minutes when no signal is present so I am not sure why I am having this problem. Got the three year warrenty from Best Buy so I'm not worried about it. It is puzzling though that there is a few of us that are starting to get this. I bought this TV 11 months ago.

i posted a few pages back about having the same problem as quoted above. have there been any solutions to this issue at all?
karmasore 08-30-09, 05:33 PM edit: double post
After attempting to go from 1.4.2 back to 1.3.0 my 42" bricked. My Westy would not shake hands with the hdmi ports on my Harman Kardon 254 and my Samsung BD-P1600. I know that the Westy is the problem because the AVR and Bluray player worked fine on another 42" LCD.
I get that Hollywood is trying to protect their content thru HDCP but Westinghouse needed to stay ahead of the curve vis-a-vis firmware updates. After I purchase a new Main Board and LCD Controller its bye-bye to my Westy.

I am getting a ton of ghosting on my TX-42F430S. It wasn't really an issue up until 3months ago where its becoming more and more annoying. Especially watching baseball and when they go to a highlight you get the ghosted image of the scorebar. I turned my back light down to 10 and 0 for over a week and they net result is the same. It ghosts just as often as before.
I also have a single stuck pixel. Does anyone have experience with best buy warrenty services? I am still under warranty until xmas and wondering if either the ghosting or the stuck pixel will warrant me a repair.
tbtferg07 09-07-09, 10:10 AM I have a 47" Westinghouse Lcd tv. The screen starts flickering until it just displays a bunch of colored lines. It happens on every input ive tried. Unplugging it and plugging it back in fixes it sometimes, and occasionally so does rebooting it. Does anyone know how to fix it?

I've always heard good things in general about BB warranty services. If they can't fix it (which they probably can't), they will likely give you something for up to the same price you bought it at, which in the world of technology usually means an upgrade.

That sounds like a problem I've heard about where people have to have a main circuit board replaced - usually on a dud soon after purchase. Might want to see how much you can get for it on eBay and start looking for a good deal on a new TV at Slickdeals or Fatwallet.

Hopefully. When I talked to a salesmen at best buy he pretty much told me to call up their 1800 number and have a tech come out and look at it.
If the tv can't be fixed, they will give you a comparable model. Which means insignia since best buy doesn't sell Westinghouse tvs anymore. I highly doubt they can fix a stuck pixel. I tried a lot of methods to attempt to get it going again.
I dont know much about insignia except its BB cheap brand tv. not sure what to do...gonna probably have a tech come out next week to check the tv and hopefully he has better news. Would be nice to get an upgrade but thats wishful thinking. :/
timalan 09-12-09, 06:33 PM Just on the side of curiosity. the flat panel of my 47 is obviously ok it displays a pretty W to remind me never to buy from Westy again. But If I wanted to just use it as a display for a Mac Mini how hard would that be.... To eliminate the Board with all the different inputs in exchange for just one input. Probably stupid right?
timalan 09-12-09, 06:34 PM Oh and does anyone have a real schematic of the TX47 unit?

I just noticed this on my set today for the first time owning it for 1.5 years. I came on this forum to see if anyone else was having the problem and lo and behold, other people are having it pop up after owning the set for a long time as well. I definitely notice it more on blue backgrounds than any other color, but of course, the sky is blue and that's usually at the top of the screen. My set turns off after only about 1 minute if there's no signal, so it could never have had it on for more than one consecutive minute. I got the extended warranty too from BB, and this will be the 3rd time I've had to have them repair this stupid TV. The other problems were locking up and the motherboard had to be replaced, but this is the first time I've had a panel problem.
NayusDante 09-19-09, 04:50 PM Odd that it would show up after owning it for a long time. Mine was like that the moment I turned it on after bringing it home, and so were the three or so that I exchanged it for before settling on my HP. The Westinghouse is probably intended for TELEVISION, not much else.

I noticed it shortly after I got the TV but I upgraded to the 1.3.0 firmware and problem went away completely.
NayusDante 09-19-09, 05:46 PM Hmmm, well I had mine almost two years ago. I remember flashing the latest firmware to it, but it might not have been 1.3 then.
karmasore 09-22-09, 04:28 PM I'm having the same issue as above. I am currently running 5112_1.1.0 and my tv was built on september 3, 2007. What would be the best firmware to flash this tv with? The image persistence of the "no input signal" box is really annoying and guests keep bringing up the fact that they can see it when I have movie nights. :(
I am also thinking about updating my firmware for the television to remove the ghosting.
When i went to the support site, My part number is TW-51122-C042A. The only option available was a TW-51121-C042A.
I see a lot of users here talking about firmware 1.3.0. I went ahead and downloaded the firmware for wrong part number but correct unit & serial number, its 1.4.2.
Does 1.4.2 remove the ghosting issue like 1.3.0?
Can I used 1.4.2 firmware for part number 51121 on a 51122 television?
Thanks again avs. u guys are the best.
edit: if Carsfanatic is around, would the 1.30 firmware you posted about work for the TX-42F430S, w/ the TW-51122-C042A part number. I see some people were having issues updating a couple pages back.

That was for the 47" forget the exact part number but should be for any of the 47" except the newer ones with different numbers than this thread is made for.
vjamalpur 09-23-09, 04:04 PM I tried to update the firmware on my TX-42F430S... kind of stupid thing to do....
and I guess I used a wrong firmware and I guess my TX-42 is bricked now....
I followed the usual steps,
unplugged the power,
plugged in the thumb drive with the 2 files which was pre-formatted,
plugged in the power cord... all i saw was solid AMBER LED... I did not see any flashing ... after few minutes I removed the power, took the thumb drive out and plugged in the power again...
but, now when I try to power on all I see is the solid AMBER LED.. I tried using several thumb drives ... but no success...
My part No is :: TW-51121-C042A
MY Serial ::5112J72702057
Can any one give the link to the correct firmware for this part/model/serial..?
I read through some posts that the only option is to replace the MAIN BOARD.
I opened up my TV and found this on the MAIN BOARD
W470PROLX68
48.3YT01.01A
06287-1A
I was looking for this MAIN BOARD for my TX-42 but could not find anything... I could find MAIN BOARD for TX-47 with the same part#...
MY question is do TX-42 and TX-47 use the same MAIN BOARD?
Thanks in advance....
Lester Jacobs 09-23-09, 10:10 PM Hi All,
Just wanted to report a successful firmware update of my TX-42F430S to version 1.3.0. I was a bit hesitant to attempt the upgrade based on the number of TVs that were apparently "bricked" by the upgrade process. However I had a Best Buy extended warranty as backup should anything go wrong so I figured I had nothing to lose. To be ultra safe I went through Westinghouse customer support and they send me the 1.3.0 firmware directly. That way I was absolutely sure I had the correct files for my particular model. Subsequent to that I followed Carsfanatic's instructions to the letter and everything went smoothly. My TV is now at 1.3.0. This will hopefully cure the occasional lockup issues I had and also fix the flaky operation of the Autosource functionality that I was experiencing.
By the way, I compared the firmware that Westinghouse sent me to the link that Carsfanatic posted and they appear to be identical (file sizes and checksum match perfectly). This is what I expected but I wanted to get the firmware from the "horse's mouth" so to speak to put my mind at ease.
Cheers
Lester

Hi Lester,
Did you use the SusanII_v1.3.0_20071026.rar to update the firmware?
If not can you please provide the link where I can download the correct one..
If possible can you upload the one you used.... ;)
Thanks
Well.. I've had my tx47 TV now for a little over 2 years (got it in June '07), and the TV is acting up on me now.. *sigh* Ah well, fortunately I have a BB PSP. :D The thing is, there are red blotches that show up on dark images, and the more I turn down the brightness, the more red shows through and the worse it looks. Very strange.. A service tech is coming out end of the week to take a look at it. Hopefully they can't get parts for it and I can just get credit towards another set. Anyone experienced this problem before? I tried unplugging it but that doesn't help at all.
I'm sure they'll say it needs a new mainboard.. I'll let you guys know what happens with BB..
Hmm.. looks like I'm not the first to have this problem: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=15061254#post15061254
Is this a panel problem or a video processing/motherboard/etc issue? Anyone have an idea?
Thanks a bunch Carsfanatic and everyone in this thread. First attempt I just removed the power, put the usb drive in, saw the amber light and started flashing purple...so i removed the drive & power cable. turned on the tv but it didn't update
After reading a few posts here I tried it again by letting the purplish/blue light flash for ~3minutes until it goes solid blue. took out the usb, and power cable. Waited for the light to go off on the front of the tv. Put the power back on and im up to 1.30. Hopefully I wont get such bad ghosting now w/ the 360.
For future reference.
I used this (http://www.fileden.com/files/2008/8/23/2062163/SusanII_v1.3.0_20071026.rar) firmware with my TX-42F430S. Part # TW-51122-C042A. Worked perfectly.

When I compared the file I used versus the SusanII_v1.3.0_20071026.rar the files were identical (checksums and file sizes matched up). So you should be ok to use the SusanII_v1.3.0_20071026.rar to update. However, if you want the file I used then PM me with your email and I'll send it.

Well, Geeksquad guy came by today, and diagnosed it as a bad mainboard or possibly the panel. He said he would place an order for a mainboard, and will be back in a couple weeks to install it. I guess now we'll see if they can get the parts. If they don't get the part in for a couple weeks, I'll ask to have it replaced/credit towards a new tv.
Has anyone recently tried to get their set fixed by a BB psp? Were they able to get parts? TIA..
Leviathin25 09-26-09, 10:18 AM Hi Mikeoz
My 47 inch broke down on 9/3/09 I got an amber light but it wouldnt turn on. The W logo came up but it would promptly shut back off. Geek Squad came a few days later diagnosed it as a bad powersupply and ordered that part as well as the main board as well. It took about three weeks to get the pieces in and they ordered the wrong main board. The powersupply did not fix the problem. I asked our tech who was a nice guy to try and push to get an RMA confimation number. luckily he hooked my up and I picked up a new TV at best buy. Going Westinghouse for TV was the biggest Tech mistake I ever made. I picked up a 47LH90 and am pretty happy with it.
I was lucky too because I paid 1399 for my TV when I bought it and then I got $200 with the price back guarantee. So 1199 total at the end of day. Well they credited me 1399 plus tax back so I only paid $100 for my new tv plus tax and the service plan. I got really lucky.
Thanks for the info Leviathin! The geeksquad guy was actually quite nice, and called me back later the same day to schedule an install date a little over a week from today. Fortunately, my tv is not completely dead, so I'm not w/o a tv, so I can afford to be a little more patient than you. Just so I understand you correctly.. you got an actual return confirmation number (RMA), so you simply went in as if you were returning the tv? That's really sweet! It seems for many people they are instead giving them the option of replacing it with a "similar model" (the insignia), but seems like you lucked out! ;) Congrats!
In case I get in a similar situation (I'll give them a good month to fix it), how did you go about getting an RMA vs. simply them trying to give you a replacement set?
Leviathin25 10-02-09, 08:35 PM Hi Mike Sorry for the late reply this thread got buried! I believe what happens is they give you a return authorization number. Then you bring it to the store and then when I was at the service desk I said I wanted to upgrade and pay the difference. they said that it was ok and to go back to the Magnolia section to get the trade in value of my TV and pick out a new one.
Like I said I got really lucky when I went in because the Magnolia people either didnt know their policy or didnt care and I got more back than I probably should have. Though I just considered it compensation for the time I had to take off of work. ;)
Helllo,
I recently purchased the TX-47F430S TV, I have it hooked up to Comcast Cable, and I'm not getting any channels. I have it set to Cable and did an Autoscan. Any ideas?
Thanks!
Well, the geeksquad guy came today and the TV looks to be fixed. The new mainboard looks to have fixed the red blotches I was seeing, so no "upgrade" for me.. :P Ah well, nice to have the TV fixed. The firmware version now shows up as 5112_1.4.0. Either way, I'm pretty pleased how they handled the situation. They were on time, got the part in on time, and fixed the tv in just over 2 weeks.
I wonder if the HDMI syncing is any better with this TV.. I had the 1.1.0 firmware before, and notice a few small differences here and there in the menu system and now get the "Syncing" message when selecting an HDMI input..
ssj4vegita2002 10-07-09, 01:31 PM Well, after 2 years, my 42" died. Getting no picture on any input. Guy came out and said they would order a new board and we would have it in 7-10 days. 2 and a half weeks later and we still hadn't heard anything. Called up best Buy and they said the part is nowhere to be found. Nice of them to let us know...wonder how long it would have been if I didn't contact them first. Anywho, long story short, they gave me a confirmation number and I'm going tonight to bring the old set back and get a brand new set. they better not try to jerk me around and give me some crappy Insignia or something.
**UPDATE**
Ended up getting store credit in the amount I originally paid for the TV, about $1000, and ended up getting a nice new 40" Samsung UN40B6000. Thing is sick. Good riddance to Westinghouse I'm afraid, not going to be purchasing anything from them again.
weezntz 10-10-09, 06:08 PM That's cool, i'm thinking about giving best buy a call myself. I have the tx-47 and i keep having problems when trying to switch hdmi inputs. I keep having to hold down the power button until the big "W" comes up, big pain in the behind I started using my xbox 360 with the vga cable just to not have to deal with it so much. I also have some image retention in the top right corner of the screen, didn't think lcd's had this problem but I guess it's just westinghouse lol. So glad I bought the 4 year protection plan. Now just have to see what happens.
RostrChket 10-13-09, 04:24 PM Sooo, I'm quite new to this thread. Been reading page after page and I was hoping someone might have a moment to reply if they have any knowledge of my issue. Have a TX-47F43OS that I bought over two years ago. All of the HDMI ports are not responding. Tried new HDMI cables and devices, but the LCD will not display anything via HDMI. Could a possible firmware update help w/ this? If so, how do I go about applying the update, and doing a full "reset" on the LCD?
Any help is much apprciated.
TurbosOnly 10-13-09, 11:16 PM I started experiencing the same exact problem. Westinghouse (whoever they actually are) said it is a HDMI handshake issue. They said they have no resolution to the issue. The rep said i should use the Component inputs. I said what if i have more than two? She said sorry - that's it! You would think that they would have a fix for this problem since the TV has been out for a while. Fortunately, i have an extended warranty through Costco. Having read much negative feedback about Westinghouse TVs, i plan on pressing Costco for a replacement or credit. Good luck with finding a solution to your problem.
Luca Brazzi 10-17-09, 01:29 AM I just noticed this on my set today for the first time owning it for 1.5 years.
Yes... I am also having this problem, but its not the 1st persistent image Ive noticed on this TV. I noticed the 1st one when after leaving the TV on a "Radio" channel which had some static text on it for a long time (a couple of days) , the static text became persistent. After a while, that persistent image faded away all by itself. Then I noticed the "No Signal" box persistent image. IMO this image is mainly due to the fact that the Firmware Developers who wrote the code, for my TX42, are basically idiots (I do computer programming for a living so Im an expert on this topic). All they needed to do was to design the code, so that the "No Signal"/"Detecting" box moves around on the screen randomly instead of always appearing in the same spot. My guess is that some idiotic jackass on their software development team thought "LCDs dont suffer from Burn in problems so we dont need to take that into consideration". OR... worse... they KNEW about the burn in issue, and did it on purpose so people would waste money buying parts from them to fix the issue. Since Ive had no other major problems with the set, Im reluctant to upgrade the firmware from 1.2.0 (If it aint broken, dont fix it)
BTW Ive had my set for 2+ years.
madcheeku 10-18-09, 05:38 AM I ahve had the 42 inch for couple of years now and had been using the TV speakers until now.
I recently decided to connect a AV receiver to the optical output of the TV to get the sound but am only getting the left channel from the TV for some reason. The TV is connected as a 2nd TV to my dish network 622 DVR. Any idea what could be going on?
Another problem recently came up where when i power down the TV, the sound output continues to come. Is there a setting that can be used to remove this? I know there is a 'Audio only' setting but that shouldn't effect powering down the TV?

Not sure why you are taking the output of the TV and sending it to your receiver. When I hooked up my AV receiver to my TV I put the output for all of my sources (Cable/XBox/Blu Ray) directly into the receiver, and just ran the HDMI output of the receiver to the TV for Video Only.

Luca is right you want to run individual sources to your receiver. 99% of TV's will only output 5.1 via optical if your watching the built in OTA unfortunately for the westy's even watching the OTA you only get stereo from optical. If you have other sources going to your TV(all TV's not just westy) and use the optical out from your TV to your receiver you will still only get stereo even if your source if giving 5.1 to the TV.
madcheeku 10-18-09, 01:58 PM I have most of the sources connected thru the AVR, but the TV is set as a 2nd TV on the dishnetwork DVR so it gets the signal thru the coax.
OtherSimon 10-19-09, 10:36 PM i posted a few pages back about having the same problem as quoted above. have there been any solutions to this issue at all?
I fixed it by putting a black and a white picture on my xbox 360 cycling in slide show. It took about 2 weeks each night and it was gone. Now it's back :( I have to do it again.
Put the menus as transparent as possible, level 0. Its caused by the tv never really turning off in standby.

The problem is i am not even getting stereo out of the TV. Sounds like only the left channel is comming thru.
pedromt 10-20-09, 06:25 PM I use a Logitech Harmony Xbox 360 Remote with my TX42 and have had this problem for a while. When I run an activity with the remote such as the Xbox or Watch a DVD it has a really hard time getting to the correct input. In fact I've spent so much time going back to the help menu on the remote... "Is the Input set to Digital?" "Is the Input set to HDMI 4?" that the white NO INPUT SIGNAL box is now burned into my picture.
I've tried a couple of things from changing the timing on the remote for TV signals to turning automatic input switching off on the TV and trying to have the Remote never turn the TV off and not send input change signals for the Xbox & DVD so that the automatic input switch would just pick up on it. Nothing has really worked. Does anyone have any suggestions on the best way to configure a Harmony with the TX series?
Also, is there a way I can find the model number of my TV through the menu? I'd like to check on firmware updates and things but it's directly behind where the TV is mounted and I'd rather not have to take it down.
Lastly, a blue line seems to always develop along the bottom of my screen. It will stay there until I remove the power from the wall and then it'll be gone but come back later with regular use. Any ideas?
Many thanks.
mbreitba 10-26-09, 01:08 PM So I just rescued one of these LCD's (TX-47F430S) from the trash - had a friend that had it, and it would show the Westinghouse W logo, but not turn on. He said I could have it, and if I couldn't get it fixed it was my responsibility to trash it. Figured it was a bad mainboard, but figured I'd try flashing it just to see what happened. Lo and behold, the flash took, and it came right up.
Now I'm wondering (after trying to search 190+ pages) what the consensus is on the best firmware for this display is. I used the latest from the Westinghouse website, but wanted to check and see if that's the one I should be using, or if there is a different version that is decidedly better (i know how things can get broken in new firmware releases for pretty much anything).

1.3.0 is the best it solved the ghost imaging. If you are using the most current I think 1.6.3 try a 1080i/p source it will cut in an out on you and will be unwatchable. If your 1080 sources work then maybe yours is fine. I would not flash the firmware at all if everything works. Only flash firmware if there is something wrong/you wish to fix with the new firmware.
mbreitba 10-26-09, 01:49 PM Well, I don't have any 1080 sources at this time except for OTA channels (and I haven't set up my antenna yet, so just using cable TV). Other than that, it appears to work fine via component inputs from my Xbox (original) and DVD player.
Also, I noticed that the backlight seems to lighten the image on either side of the screen - any chance there is a firmware fix for that, or is that just the nature of this panel?

I notice that on mine but only when the screen is totally black. When there is any image at all(even a black sceen) there seems to be no backlight bleed through on the edges.
brutus_001 10-27-09, 02:22 PM long time viewer, first time poster.....
my 47tx was purchased brand new from best buy in june of 07. got the 4 year protection plan on it (and glad i did).
had the usual hdmi drops, issues when the source switched from hd to sd and vice versa. the right half of the screen in green. vertical green stripe on the right side of the display in hd. missing vertical column of pixels on the left side in hd. does not handle the wii in widescreen.
had the geek squad come out, they said the lcd panel would need to be replaced. part was suppose to come in last monday, oct. 19. still back order until the 30th (supposedly). but they consumer relations department called me to offer me a swap-out since the repair could not be done in a timely manner.
so the comparable model they offered was the lg 47lh40. heard good things, except for the audio sync, but i am hoping the new firmware will address this. if not, they i may swap it for a plasma.
but best buy is accommodating. milk it if you have it (the protection plan).
surfdisp 10-30-09, 08:06 PM I have read dozens of posts and haven't seen my issue yet. HELP! My 18 month old 42 inch West has no audio. I fixed this recently with a reboot of the cable box but that doesnt work anymore. I actually have a 15 inch tv parked behind my Westy for audio. Both are receiving output from the same cable box so I KNOW it's the Westy audio that is the issue. Currently using HDMI but also used component cables. No difference. West has firmware 1.3 installed.
quattroG 10-31-09, 10:04 AM If you use a direct cable in, do you have audio? If so, then it would appear to be an issue with the audio input. Maybe a firmware update would fix.
surfdisp 10-31-09, 12:26 PM I did try direct input from cable without the cablebox and I got nothing. I've tried all the HDMI inputs, component audio input and coaxial input. Nothing. I've been reading the new firmware is a disaster on here so I really don't want to do that. Could it be a fried audio board? If so where do I get one?
rogerdiaz 11-02-09, 03:50 PM Hello, I have owned the TX47 for 2 years now...just this past summer i got my first problem..i noticed the image retention issue, mostly my fault, I left my TV on for 1 month while on vacation. and now i have ghost HDMI input box on top right corner.(faint)
I am running 2007 June 26 5121 1.3.0. I hope to fix the image retention problem and then sell the TV.
I'm a cheap budget person. This has been the perfect tv for me. I am moving on to the Vizio 55 LED LCD.
Question...
Anyone know the differences between 2007 June 26 1.3.0 and 2007 October 26 1.3.0 firmware?
thunderstorm360 11-05-09, 02:30 AM ***ATTENTION TO ALL THOSE WITH THE WRONG FLASH -- AMBER NO START - "BRICKED" TVs***
Your TV isn't bricked! I've been all over this forum for days and finally got the answer I was looking for. The problem is a combination of wrong flash, horrible programming, and poor customer service on Westy's part. Anyway, the issue (especially those who are getting the quick blue flash back to amber) isnt that you have the wrong firmware exactly but that your tv is rejecting anything but 1.0.0 firmware. You didn't brick it with the wrong firmware, you just reset it. Whenever you attempt to flash, one of the first things it will do it verify some things with your tv. Due to some poor design on Westinghouse's part, it will unlock your vendor/model info before it flashes. If you are attempting to use firmware not for your set (ie: SusanII files for an older LX 5112 model) it will error out without "relocking" that info and because of that will reset your tv to 1.0.0. As stated on the forums here you MUST upgrade in order 1.0.0 --> 1.1.0 --> 1.2.0 and so on. Well, good luck getting the 1.0.0 firmware from Westinghouse.
Provided you know the last firmware that was on your TV (5112_1.3.0 on June 26) you can recover your TV and "unbrick" it.
You will need the following:
1. The firmware that was last on your TV before the incorrect/bad flash
2. The ability to decompress and compress tgz files (tar.gz)
3. Text editor
Unzip the .tgz file (mine was Update_WDE.tgz) and inside you will see a folder "Board_root". Inside the Board_root folder are a number of files. We are only concerned about the ones that end in .sh (compatible, do_update, StartBurn_led, and update). For each of the files open then up in your text editor and you will see the unix script codes. Don't worry, you don't need to know what its doing or change large amounts of the code. Simply look in every file for anything that says "Exit 1" and change that 1 to 0. Close the file (chose SAVE not SAVE AS) and go to the next.
Once all files have been changed you need to recompress board_root back to the name it was before (ie. Update_WDE.tgz)
Now you are ready to flash that TV!
*Warning: You must be SURE you are about to flash with the SAME firmware you had on the TV before. DO NOT USE THIS TO FORCE AND UPGRADE. By changing the script you removed the program's ability to end due to incorrect tv or version number. No matter what, anything good or bad, is now telling the TV to go ahead and complete the flash.
If you are unsure about how to open up and edit the files or need some help verifying the firmware before doing this email me at thunderstorm360@live.com and I will get with you as quickly as possible.
I dont know what will happen if you force flash the wrong firmware, but if you do, this time it may be a real brick you are left with. I'm not trying it with mine so if your unsure or really want a 42/47" paper weight, go right ahead. ;-)
