View Full Version : Official Westinghouse TX Series ( TX-42F430S, TX-47F430S ) Owner's Thread
bhazard 07-20-07, 12:58 PM First post here. I glanced through this thread, and it's hard to follow with nearly 60 pages. Can anyone give a comparison of this to some of the other 42" LCD 1080p TVs at comparable price points- ie- the 1080p Vizio, the 1080p Magnavox that Costco recently had?
I'm looking at LCD and plasma, and for those prices there's been some, like this 42" Westy, currently on sale at Best Buy, that fit my budget and are 1080p. But reading over the last couple pages of "problems", it's got me scared of this Westy.
Can anyone compare it to Vizio or Magnavox or a similarly priced/budgeted 42" 1080p LCD?
essence: CNet doesn't seem to have a review yet. Only 3 customer reviews.
Out of the 3, Westinghouse seems to be the best as of now.
lordofthenazgul 07-20-07, 01:02 PM When I play Wii, I have to use the fill option. The games I used stay in 4:3 even when set to 16:9 in the Wii Menu. Fill mode corrects this and I dont see much overscan, if at all. I'll have to check again tonight, but this issue is from the system, not the TV.
Hi all, I'm new here and it looks like I'm not the only one who loves his new purchase of the TX-42.
Regarding the above post, I always use the Wii on the "Fill" option. I am using MadCatz Component cables and everything looks great. I agree, it's not the TV.
lordofthenazgul 07-20-07, 01:07 PM Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone could post the custom settings they are using while playing the regular XBOX 360.
Unfortunately, Microsoft came out with the Elite a few months AFTER I already bought the Premium model, so I don't have the HDMI port to use.
As such, the 360 is on 1080p widescreen mode. Games are awesome and I'm not really having a problem with the pictures...I just wonder if there's a better custom setting out there to try.
This TV is wonderful. When I was on the phone with my local cable company to order HD Programming, he almost freaked when I told him the TV was 1080p.....
Anyway, thanks for any info!

Thanks so much bhazard. It appears you are THE guru of this thread, beginning to end. Sadly, I did not read every page of this thread.. could you or someone else inform me on 2 things?
1) Did the issue of only 2 channels being used through the optical output get resolved?
2) Why exactly is the Westinghouse generally considered the best of those bunch? I believe their specs appear to be the same. Is the blackness? refresh? reliability?
I'm asking because I'm considering this one which goes off sale Sunday. I'm also considering the 720p Vizio and other 720p LCD options. However Sam's Club doesn't have the 1080p as an option and I'm torn about where to purchase b/c of Sam's 90-day return policy should I need it.
FWIW- My biggest concern is PQ of standard def. I've never had HD yet and still watch and plan to still watch a TON of standard def channels. TBS, USA, ABC Family, TNT, TLC, HGTV, FX, and others. Also, I watch a lot of college football and some NFL, which I am looking forward to those in HD.
UlysisAM 07-20-07, 01:25 PM I think I just may buy this TV again tomorrow, what with the sale price plus 12% off coupon I received in the mail. Thinking about what Samsung and Sony is releasing just gives me a headache and what I experienced with the Westinghouse for the short time I had with it the first time, I was greatly impressed.
I'm sure I can always exchange it down the road for a new firmware or model with a PSP.

How do you get Best Buy to accept the 12% coupon on items that are already "on sale"? Every time I've tried (in the past on DVDs) they reject it b/c it says discount taken from regular prices.
flabioh 07-20-07, 01:36 PM I love my TV. It does everything I expected it to do. If they publicly release firmware updates then I will be even happier. Sure, there are small problems here and there but we could nitpick any set out there and we'd never buy a new TV. If you want a great 1080p TV today... buy this one.
By the way, did anyone notice that there are new ATI drivers available. The release notes say these drivers include the following:
" Easy to use display scaling controls2 when outputting to display devices that support TV timings (480i/p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p) through either digital (DVI or HDMI) or analog (component) interfaces"
I wonder if these will fix any of the 1080p issues people were having with their ATI cards?
essencedesign 07-20-07, 01:41 PM just an FYI too for anyone interested DELL in Canada is seling these sets now.
I also just received a Coupon Code offer for 10% off any electronics from Dell.ca
That means with the code 8P8WHCR74SV6V0 at checkout the 47" comes to around 1899 before taxes...for a 47" 1080P LCD in canada , thats VERY tough to beat.
Since Dell hasn't shipped my order yet I am going to be calling and having them apply this coupon to my order . Guess this seals the deal for me :)
kevbrad66 07-20-07, 02:25 PM Great deal currently at BBuy with their coupons
Hello All -
I will register my opinions on this set shortly sometime after this weekend, but I'm pretty excited at having gotten a 42" TX with 12% off the current in-store price here in the Northeast (currently less than their web price). Pile their "HDAdvantage" package promotion on top of that, and I picked up a Toshiba HD-A2 at a nice $100 discount. All told, out the door with both for less than MSRP (plus tax) of the TV alone.
This is a secondary set, ironically, even though it will be the first 1080p set in the house. ...and to think I paid $899 for a 32" 32w6 just last summer! (hence, I don't feel too bad about scoring this deal)
How do you get Best Buy to accept the 12% coupon on items that are already "on sale"? Every time I've tried (in the past on DVDs) they reject it b/c it says discount taken from regular prices.
It depends on a lot of factors I guess. I bought the 42" model first, and they gave me the sale price from the website. I asked if I could add in the coupon and the salesman said as long as the computer accepts it it's fine, which it did. Nice and easy. So then after a few days I decided to upgrade to the 47", which was also on sale. I did the exchange through the customer service counter and they said they couldn't use a coupon on a sale item. I explained to them that I used the coupon on the original sale which was also a sale price, and that if they couldn't honor the additional discount again that I would just have to return the 42" for a refund. This got a manger involved who used his manager magic to allow the coupon. He was angry about it and said that the only reason he was doing it was because the coupon was allowed on the original sale, even though it never should have.
Long story short, YMMV. With a little luck and persistence though, you might be able to pull it off.

I actually got a "package deal" at my local Best Buy (Canada). The TX ended up being $100 (CAD) less. They also threw in a stand, Monster component cables, HD Cable box, the 3 year store warranty, and a honking huge Monster outlet bar (I swear, it was like the outlet bar weighed more than the TV!!!). With taxes, I saved a BUNDLE.
They are not on commission over at BB, so I think if you LOOK like you are serious, they may move on the price, even for a TX.

1) The OTA tuner as of right now downsamples 5.1 audio to stereo. There is no workaround until a firmware fix is implemented. You CAN use 5.1 through the optical out on the TV, but your individual devices connected must be set to output HDMI audio.
2) Out of picture quality and reliability, the Westinghouse is a bit better than Vizio and Magnavox right now, it has a better video processing chip. You wont get the black levels of a Samsung or Sony, but you're not paying as much either.
3) I dont care what anyone says, 1080p does look better than 720p.
The standard def on this TV is actually really good for an lcd, but it will never look as good as an HD channel. HD sports and shows look stunning if you havent seen HD yet.

hmm i haven't had problems getting 1080p, but i'm using the notebook version of the x1600...to me it seems the waviness improved every day that I used it and yesterday it was almost gone..I even checked to see if the cables moved or something but I didn't change a thing, I wonder if the drivers would help anymore with this issue or the flickering that ppl are reporting on the hdmi/dvi port

Best setting for XBOX360 without HDMI
Use the microsoft VGA cable, VGA looks much better/more crisp than component on this TV.
Make sure 1920x1080 and expanded black levels are set in the xbox360 dashboard.
Try to keep brightness/contrast as close to 50/50 as you can over VGA.
Brightness: For games not too dark 50-55
For dark dungeon games like overlord 58-63
Contrast: 50-55
Saturation: 55-60
Hue:50-51
Backlight:30-60 (i like it bright sometimes)
Dynamic Contrast: (on or off, your preference) I like it on most of the time.
RGB values: no one really has gone into this with test patterns to see changes, but default should be good.
Color Temp: Cant be changed in VGA for me.
Try it. I use my 360 and HD-DVD addon the most on the TV and love it. Picture is much more crisp than my old HD RPTV.

This works for the SA8300HD using the Time Warner Passport OS? Mine is set this way (digital audio set to HDMI) and it does not pass 5.1 out the optical connector. Also, does this hold true for DVD upconvert players using HDMI? If so, which ones do work because my Sony does not.

My PS3 and my Comcast Motorola 6412DCTIII both pass 5.1 through HDMI out of the optical when they are set to HDMI audio. Is there a RAW or PCM option on your dvd player that you can try?

I can't recall the modes the Sony upconvert player offered, but I couldn't get it to work at all. I've got the TV disconnected right now because I'm putting new flooring down in my living room. At the beginning I had a Samsung upconvert player that had two options, bitstream and PCM. Bitstream did work, however I got a message on the TV from the DVD player that stated HDMI audio not supported. I had other issues with that unit, so I exchanged it for the Sony. I am now just running toslink cables from my sources directly to my receiver to get my DD5.1. That's ok, but as I've mentioned before, I had hoped to use the TX 47 as my A/V switcher.
I am wondering if the PS3 and your cable box are sending a DD stream that the TV's HDMI audio can't understand and the HDMI audio handshake back to the source is not happening, so then the DD5.1 passes (the source is not told to only use 2 channel because the TV only can support 2 channel audio). Not sure, but I'm trying to come up with a reason it works for some devices and not others. I don't understand enough about HDMI and the audio handshaking that goes on, how that relates to the various versions of HDMI (newer ones supporting the new DD standards), bit rate support, etc. I had hoped that turning the TV speakers to external would "disable" the HDMI audio handshaking that would happen between the TV and the source, but that didn't help my situation. I also don't know if this same situation is happening with other HDTV brands with optical audio out on them.
ClemmonsHoo 07-20-07, 07:22 PM Just came back from BB to get my 30 day price guarantee credit ($160 fro me - yay!), and decided to do more side by side comparisons with this TV now that I know what to look for. All I can say is that, in between programming clips, when all the sets were black, they were all really black except for the 2 Westinghouse models whose screens seemed to have a light blue glow. I assume that's because they had the backlight turned all the way up, but wouldn't the other brands also have there's turned up as well.
Anyway, this "glow" is the thing that irks me about the Westy. But when the screen is filled and there is a lot of activity it just isn't that noticable.
Oh yeah, I looked really hard at the differences between the 720p and 1080p models. There definitely is a difference. The 720p models at first appear very sharp compared to the 1080p models, but on closer inspection, I saw that this is caused by larger pixels. The affect is almost like when you use too much sharpening on a digital photo.
Right now I am watching Animatrix, and I am diggin it!
Woobieizer 07-20-07, 07:27 PM FYI,
I'm watching to see if my question is answered. TX owners please join and post your questions to Westinghouse.

Woobieizer 07-20-07, 07:51 PM oh ok,
this may seem like a odd question .. but im currently using and old skool crt 30" with digital cable (tv has NO pip)
however the digi cable remote has a pip option and it works on the unit!
anyone else have a similar setup and use it on the TX ?
I would hazard a guess that your dig cable box has some input sources you are porting into your dig cable box, thus the pip is assimilated there and passed on to your Westinghouse. Can you confirm?
Thanks

I was denied when I tried this today. I decided to wait, I may try another BB tomorrow.

I could not get this to work with my SA8300HD. Even setting the audio to HDMI didn't make it pass 5.1 through optical on the tv.
I just picked one up, the 10% moving coupon worked, so I picked up the 4 year service plan with it.
Hooked it up immediately to my MacBook Pro (Core 2), with a DVI-HDMI cable, worked well at 1920x1080, with each pixel mapped perfectly.
For my HTPC box running XP, didn't go so well. Setting to 1920x1080 went to 30i interlaced by default, when set to 60 hertz, the screen went blank. I'll play with it some more tomorrow, probably some stupid setting somewhere in the ATi Control Panel.
My overall impression, the viewing angle is as I expected. Maybe 30-40 degrees, the black gets purple-ish. But for the price I paid, can't complain when compared to a 720p Plasma.
I'll hook it up OTA tomorrow and check it out.
El Explosivo 07-21-07, 05:27 AM Hello everyone.
I'm planning on eventually buying this tv and I just have a few questions. I was gonna get the LVM for a while, but then this tv came out and quite frankly, I like the design better. Yeah, the two look similar, but I just like this one better. It's probably because the color of the frame for this tv looks cooler.
Alrighty then, I am primarily getting this tv for use as a monitor for my pc. I want to connect my pc to this tv via the dvi to hdmi cable. Here's the question, does this tv have any issues with overscan or underscan?
If there is, how do you adjust the screen to make it fit properly? Even if there isn't a problem, is it possible to still adjust the screen through the tv or your graphic card control panel or something like that? I've never had a lcd before so I wouldn't know.
Overall, for those who use this tv as a monitor through dvi to hdmi cable, would you guys say that it's better than or comparable to the LVM series that's hooked up through the dvi input?
I would really appreciate your responses to my questions since the fate of my future purchase rests on your hands.
Thanks.

OMG!
Kiss your girlfriend for me and get to work on your TX taking some pics. Can you test the issue we all would love an answer to.. Can you port DD 5.1 from anything consistent. OTA, HDMI, etc. Kinda expected to see PIP to "Go the way of the Dodo"
Thanks

In your menu under Audio, do you have HDMI set to Digital? and your speakers set to External. What type of AVR (audio video receiver) are you using? Assuming you have a Toslink connected to your Westinghouse ported to an AMP.

kenpachi 07-21-07, 10:32 AM yes i have an optical fiber to my receiver. the one i'm using in my room with the tv is a bose receiver. Now this is the whats happening, for what ever reason i can only get sound from tv source thru the optical out. When ever i use an hdmi source i get nothing, which makes me believe that the optical is only good for, of the air audio which it will make it stupid to have.now if any body else try it to confirm my thoughts.I haven't tried component yet which i will in a few to see.

Kenpachi, thanks Make certain that the volume on the TV is set above O (zero), otherwise nothing is sent to the external path ie. receiver. Would you post the model number of your Bose Receiver? I would like to look up the manual to better comprehend the hookup scenario.
kenpachi 07-21-07, 10:53 AM ok i still cant get any sound even thru my elite or ps3 .so i'm calling the sound. Dead on anything other then tv source and component. So the answer is no dd5.1 thru the optical on this tv yet.
kenpachi 07-21-07, 11:03 AM Woobieizer i'm running the bose 321 model since my girlfriend doesn't think we need anything bigger in our room. Here is my set up pc hdmi1,ps3 hdmi2,elite hdmi3,cable box hdmi4.And on all digital sources there is no sound.MY old vizio was hooked up this way and i use to get sound. So this is why i say that the digital out on this tv is not fixed or is just this set.I never tried my old 42" for sound cause i didn't care much for it thru the tv.But i'm willing to try it out to help out on the forums,so if anybody has any ideas pitch them here

You must set the audio to HDMI in the PS3 under (settings/sound settings)
Choose HDMI
Choose Manual Output format
Choose all audio settings your receiver can handle (DD 5.1, DTS 5.1, etc)
Make sure volume on the tv is higher than 0
See if there is a similar setting on the Elite.
You may need to access a hidden menu on your cable box and set audio to HDMI as well. On my Motorola DCT6412III I had to hold the menu button or hit it twice and use these settings. The "Pass Through" setting is important.
HDMI/DVI mode: HDMI
Color Space: RGB
Audio Output: Pass Through
kenpachi 07-21-07, 11:29 AM Ok i did all those i just didn't go to details to what i had done cause none worked, but if ya would like me to start going to details i would.Ok ps3 was selected as hdmi for audio,i selected dd5.1,dts,aac,as well as a few linear ones like 5.1 and 7.1 which i had tried on my old vizio and knew it worked then.My tv is hooked up with the fiber optical out,to the receiver.Elite sound set up,i tried stereo,dd5.1and dd5.1 with pro and nothing. Now when i choose tv sound comes out fine from the reciever like it should, and that goes for component as well.

Thanks for your patiently walking us through this. Details are always preferred as "reading between the lines" can lead to chaos.
So back to the task. I hope sincerely that you will not feel blistered by spending your time working your set through the rope. You should enjoy what you have. If you have not already thrown in the towel then I would only make one other suggestion. (I'm sure you know your gear better than me) I would start by testing again bhazard's suggestion, yet with one device connected at a time and then, and only then throw in the towel. :o This HDTV has more to offer, and I hope you got a fully functional set. Stay tuned to the forum. There are plenty subscribers left that have more to say on the PS3, Elite, Cable Box,etc.. you'll find the correct combination soon.

kenpachi 07-21-07, 12:17 PM thanks.I have not quit messing with the set.And i'm sorry for not posting in details to what i was doing.I have just finished testing every single thing i have that has hdmi on hdmi1.Since we all now under sound there a setting for hdmi1 audio set up digital or analog, that still did not work no matter what i did to it.So i'm pretty much out of ideas for sound.I think this set just doesn't support pure digital sound yet.Now for pic quality test :o
lordofthenazgul 07-21-07, 12:34 PM Best setting for XBOX360 without HDMI
Thank you VERY much for the settings. I am heading out today to purchase the HD-DVD add-on, my standard DVD player looks great with Component hookup, but I think I'll go HD-DVD now...:)
Thanks also for the info regarding the VGA hook-up. I knew that VGA was the way to go with the HD-DVD add-on, but I didn't know how it compared with the quality using the Component cables included with the Premium system.
lordofthenazgul 07-21-07, 12:41 PM Imagine my surprise when I woke up today to enjoy a nice breakfast and some National Geographic HDTV programming...only to find a nice message on my screen when I turned on the TV/HDTV box/Audio Receiver...
"Your HDTV does not support HDCP. Please watch TV using the [Component cables]."
WTF!!?? I spent an hour puring through forums and manuals to figure out what happened...after all, I was getting audio...and I've had no prior problems with the cable box hooked up to the TX-42 using an HDMI cable.
BTW, I live in Canada and subscribe to Rogers HD. I have the Pace DC-551 box with the HDMI output.
I called tech support, who said that the Pace DC-551 had issues with HDMI "handshaking", and that my only recourse was to continue watching on Component cables until the problem is resolved.
Nice....I guess the HDMI port in the back of the Pace is as useful as the USB port in the front of it.....:P
Anyone else have this problem? If so, did it get fixed at all?

pchangover 07-21-07, 01:30 PM Okay, so I went to my local best buy today and they didn't have the TX model on display, or for that matter in stock. So then I saw that Sears had the LC-42D62U Aquos on sale for $1499.88, so I figured Best Buy would pricematch.. well I guess none of the local Sears had them in stock.. sigh.
So here is the question.. Do I go for the Aquos or do I keep trying to get the TX? Keep in mind that I can get 10% off the aquos as well. Any ideas?

Your colors are off because saturation is too high.
Contrast and sharpness are also too high.
Contrast at 60 or less
keep saturation around 55-60
Sharpness from 0 to 30, 50 tops.
Color temp Warm is the most accurate and best for movies, sometimes neutral seems better for games to me.

Sharp TVs have way too many panel problems to recommend them this year. Maybe later this year they'll finally sort them out. Chances are you'll get a screwy tv if you buy an aquos right now.

I have problems with that too i live in NY with Time Warners's SA8300HD box. It happens sporadically but after i shut it off a few times it comes back sometimes i only have to shut it off once. That is a really crappy answer they gave you. I love when you spend over a thousand dollars on something and someone tells you you cant use one of the main features.

Considering your options now, and then account for your current AV equipt.. Is being on the Bleeding Edge that important to you? Can you afford it? With that thought I would go off on a research binge to see what may become of legacy AV gear.
Hope that helps.

It's no better or worse than what is currently out there. There is almost no ghosting at all, except for a small bit of motion blur on really really fast motion. Personally, if something is moving that fast I wouldn't be able to make out all the detail anyway.
As a gaming monitor, this tv is great for the price. LCD tech will probably be much better within a year or two anyway, so why waste $2,500-$3000 when you can pay half that now, and use the money you saved to upgrade later. Prices have already dropped pretty nicely since last year, and native 1080p was almost non existant two years ago.
Hi folks,
I have a new Westinghouse 42" tx-42f430s. It has Xbox 360, the xbox hd-dvd, and a comcast HD set top box. I get great pictures form xbox 360 and xbox hd-dvd. The comcast picture is all blue faces and green skies. It looks terrible. Can anyone tell me how to adjust the comcast picture without ruining the xbox components? Also I"m running the xbox on the component cables and Comcast on Monster component cables.
Please help me because I've been searching for hours and I can't find the solution.

Jordan, sound to me as if your Luminance cable is loose on one end. Try taking the cables out and reseting them. If that fails try the xBox components cable to see if it rectifies the situation. You may have a bad female end to your Comcast box, a loose connection, or a bad set or cables.
Good luck

El Explosivo 07-21-07, 05:17 PM It is all very overwhelming to see such a long thread, yet all you need is just a "Thread Search" away. Do your research, know your budge, know thyself.
Thanks for the help and advice. At first, I tried doing the search, but I just wanted a little more input from those who have had this tv for a while and use it primarily as a pc monitor. For me, the priority that I use this tv will be pc monitor then home entertainment.
I appreciate all of the links that you provided, it was very helpful. I had already come across some of those posts while using the search option, but your links were great in providing me with additional information.
Ok I took the broken TV back yesterday and got a new one. With the help of the 12% off coupon and the sale I got a good deal. But I think I am cursed when it comes to this TV. I set up the new surround sound that I also picked up, got all the component wires laid out and ready to hook up to the TV, then I put the TV on the wall mount and connected the wires, I went to turn it on and noticed the remote was popped open in the middle. So I popped it back together then tried to use it and no luck, it is cracked on each side around the middle. I called best buy the next day hoping that my old unit was still there and I could salvage the remote, no luck, so I have to wait until Monday to get a hold of Westinghouse and get a new one, but in the mean time I have to get one of these universal remotes I have around here to work the beast, since it is a major pain to set it up at the buttons on the unit.
My first look over is that it is just as crisp and similar picture quality as the last, possibly less mura, but at a lower backlight that usually isn't an issue anyway. No dead pixels at first glance. The build date was still April 13 and the firmware is 5110_1.1.0. The only thing I notice with it is when I go through the menu settings each change causes the sound to drop out?

Another thing,, I use mine as a PC Monitor also.. even now. Sitting in the lazy boy 8 feet away with a Logitec S510 wireless keyboard. My video card is an NVIDIA GeForce PCIe 7600 GT..

Cool so you use it as a monitor too. Just curious, how do you adjust the position of the screen? Can you do it through the tv or your nvidia control panel? Someone I know told me before that it's not possible.

Glad to be back, I sure did miss the TV. I went pretty cheap on the SSIB, Yamaha HTR-6030 5.1 DD II, DTS NO HDMI out though. I have my old VCR/DVD combo, XBOX 360, PS3 running to the TV Directly, the receiver is only Component, but since the TV has a plethora of connections I really didn't care about running the video to the receiver then HDMI to the TV. I'll see about pics.
irshliquor 07-21-07, 06:45 PM OK, so I called Westinghouse to complain about the flickering via HDMI and they basically told me to call Best Buy to schedule service because they are the ones that handle the warranty service for them. They also stated explicitly that they do not offer firmware upgrades to end users to install via the USB port. This just gets better and better.
Here are some pic's.
I have one more to add.
This pic is of my wall mount, nothing special.

It happens sporadically but after i shut it off a few times it comes back sometimes i only have to shut it off once. That is a really crappy answer they gave you. I love when you spend over a thousand dollars on something and someone tells you you cant use one of the main features.
Thanks for the support...:) I didn't really expect anything other than the answer they gave me. Is this problem common to the Pace boxes?? So you're saying it comes back and re-occurs??
bhazard 07-21-07, 07:27 PM OK, so I called Westinghouse to complain about the flickering via HDMI and they basically told me to call Best Buy to schedule service because they are the ones that handle the warranty service for them. They also stated explicitly that they do not offer firmware upgrades to end users to install via the USB port. This just gets better and better.
They aren't sure of that yet. They stated they are still deciding on user upgrades when I called today. Basically your answer will differ from rep to rep.
If they dont want to let users do it, i'll be more than happy to make them do it.
lordofthenazgul 07-21-07, 07:37 PM Biohazard (or anyone else who can help): Seeing as you have the XBox HD-DVD with VGA cables hooked up, I hope you can assist me. As recommended, I now have the HD-DVD add-on with the VGA cable. Picture is perfect, but I don't get sound.
Where on the TX-42 are the Red and White audio cables supposed to go?
I tried using Optical and running it through my cable box's Optical In, but I still don't get sound. My Audio Receiver is crap, so it doesn't have an Optical Input slot....:P
Thanks for any assistance.
kenpachi 07-21-07, 07:38 PM you can just take the set back to BB and hope you get one like me,with new firmware.Plus lower price
you can just take the set back to BB and hope you get one like me,with new firmware.Plus lower price
There's no guarantee that the new TV will have that build date or firmware. I purchased my replacement Friday and it was the same build date and firmware as the original, April 13 etc.
kenpachi 07-21-07, 08:03 PM well i guess i'm lucky. But i'm not gonna celebrate yet till i make sure it doesn't flicker like my last one
I do notice with my surround sound, as others have mentioned, it doesn't receive any surround via cable TV. But it does pass through the HDMI 5.1 from my PS3. The PS3 is connected via HDMI to the TV and all sound is transmitted via optical to the receiver from the TV. The thing was with the PS3 is that the sound settings for the HDMI, if set to auto, don't allow DTS and Dolby Digital, you have to tell it to allow the supported formats through.
veterator 07-21-07, 10:22 PM Bought a 47" TX from BB today. They would not at any location in the area give me the 10-12% on top of the web price, wouldn't even budge when I said I'd buy more stuff from them if they work it out so I get it at the price I'd pay elsewhere.
So, I get it home. Take the old tv off the wall mount. Plug it in, everything is fine. Figured I might as well check the firmware and all that I've seen so much interest in on here. It's April under the screens info. Set the power mode to E.Saver to see if I was going to have problems with that...........and I did.
It's only gotten worse since I tried rebooting the screen........unplugging it completely for a few minutes. All the tests I saw people recommend. Basically the blacks on the screen are colored in completely white, the logo looks like someone reversed the blacks and whites at the boot up.
So Im betting Im going to be told I gotta have Best Buy come to the house to service it. Pretty bad to have the thing blow up the first day you take it home and didn't even get that good of a deal on it.
So, depending on what I'm told my options are, might just say screw it on the LCD television for now. Pisses me off to waste so much time on this crap.

DarthVR6 07-21-07, 10:34 PM Is anyone getting any flickering w/ their component input? My 360 is flickering very badly no matter which Component source I select. Everything else works fine :( I know its not my 360 - works fine with my 37" Sharp....Anyone??

That right there is surely your problem. The current version is 1.82, and May's update included DVD up conversion, which I must say is pretty damn good on this TV.
kenpachi 07-21-07, 10:51 PM well my ps3 has the latest firmware.i just cant get any sound from any digital source at all thru the tv to the receiver.
Jordan, sound to me as if your Luminance cable is loose on one end. Try taking the cables out and reseting them. If that fails try the xBox components cable to see if it rectifies the situation. You may have a bad female end to your Comcast box, a loose connection, or a bad set or cables.
Good luck
Y Pr Pb Y Cr Cb that spells MOON.
Wow Woobieizer you really know your stuff. Tech support from remote site without even seeing the problem. Seriously, your answer was right on. I reset the component cable to their inputs and I'm getting near perfect picture on all channels.
I still don't understand why some HD channels have black bars on the sides and some don't. I notice the "Fill" toggle on the Display settings widened the view but I wasn't sure that was what I should do. Are some channls just displayed that way?
Anyway thanks again for your help. I'm enjoying cable, gaming, and DVD all in HD now.

Welcome veterator-Sounds like your ready to have someone's ars for dinner. I hope these pointers get you back on track. Let attempt to start from scratch, no shortcuts ;)
1. Using your remote, switch over to TV then Power off and Remove Power - Unhook everything from the rear of the TV.
2. Westy User Manual English pg.19 >Connecting Your HDTV>Power
3. Where it state if you are using an antenna.. use any coax not terminated to the wall or other device.. we are doing a MacGyver to make an antenna,(or better yet,use a true antenna).
4. Turn your TV on now.
Things should be better. If not see end conclusion.
I believe that sometime the TV get lost in it digital signal and we see a hosed display. This is a result of "quickly restarting the TV", or loss of power due to Utility outage. When these conditions are met, the TV gets messy..Kinda like taking your sharpness setting and jacking them all the way up, as well as the digital vibrance, and tuning off 3DComb, etc.. tweaking the display into a messy concoction. All this at no additional charge to you :p
So if your set is disconnected to all digital signals except the the OTA tuner, you have basically taken away digital O2 that feeds the fire.
Go through the thread and also Post 1775 (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=11087404&&#post11087404)
End Conclusion:
If this did not help, I would suggest that the back plate you mounted on the TV be removed just in case the set screws have pinched something, then start from the beginning.
Good luck!

More than welcome..and again thank you for being here. That is the way the signal is broadcasted from the source Take a look at Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ATSC#TV_resolution) Pictures are better than words. This will explain far better that I can about why some of your HD content is "letterbox".

Thanks for the picture. So that third connector is kind of like those on earphones? The VGA cable I have doesn't have that third connector, so would I be able to run the red-white audio cables through one of those "gender-bender" connectors? I assume it would then go in that little spot next to the VGA hookup labelled: "Mini-Jack"??
Those who've responded have helped tremendously. Now I have to invest in a nice Audio Receiver that has an Optical INPUT....:P

iLoveSax 07-22-07, 02:58 AM Hi guys, i just bought this tv (42 inch) twice, yesterday and today, but the tvs are still in best buy store now . The first purchase was without coupon since the manager persist that it only apply to regular price and couple of other BB stores give me the same answer, so i give up the coupon thinking it was a pretty good deal anyway and the sale is almost end.
Today (Saturday) i read some post of some people who was successful in getting the coupon to be applied to the sale price so i gave this another try and was decided to hit some other BB stores. So i went to the first BB store today trying to get the coupon to work and finally i found a willing employee that will at least scan the coupon, first he told me the same thing though, coupon only apply to regular price bla bla bla. I told him that many people were able to use the coupon for this tv (exaggerating, of course) so he scan it and thank God it worked. I guess i will be canceling the first purchase and go with this one, obviously.
So thanks for the people who posted their success with the coupon, the deal is even better now. I will be picking this TV on Monday. Hopefully, my tv won't give me too many problems.
Also, its nice having fellow westy owners who like to help each other like Woobiezer here in the forum.
I just picked up the 42" westy from BB. And I love it!! I read a whole bunch of posts here about the 4 yr BB warranty and I agree it is a great deal. The manager I spoke with said because it is 42" you will get in home service, and if you find a dead pixel or anything in 4 yrs, your set will be replaced. I am not sure if this means you will get the same set or in 3 yrs you will get a tv of the same value you paid (which would be amazing)
I am certainly not an expert so my question to you is, what is the best picture setting for hookign this tv with a ps3 through HDMI.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Cool, I'm glad to hear it. I posted about it a few pages back but was really mostly curious if it resolved the issues people were having or not.
So the 4 year PSP has at home service because it's a 42" TV? Exactly where is that stated?
Did anyone else not get a PSP booklet with their purchase? I remember buying stuff from BB with a PSP a while back, and I used to get a little phamphlet that gave the further details to the PSP.
For my TX purchase, all I got was the receipt without any details to the PSP.

Many thanks bro! Everything is working flawlessly! 360, HD-DVD, upscaling via the VGA, audio, etc. The Westy is showing it's worth!
Now if friggin' Rogers Cable (Canada) and their Pace 551 HD box figure out how to support HDMI, I'll be content.
Cheers
Should I be using the VGA connection for my 360? How much of a difference is it than component?
kenpachi 07-23-07, 12:07 PM Should I be using the VGA connection for my 360? How much of a difference is it than component?
well the only differece i really noticed before is the colors are a little wash out on vga,but thru vga you can upscale movies to 1080p.So at the end its all your choice to what you care more colors or upscaling
bhazard 07-23-07, 12:08 PM Should I be using the VGA connection for my 360? How much of a difference is it than component?
I think its a sharper and more colorful picture via VGA, definitely recommend it. A good component cable might make the difference less noticable, but VGA just seems better to me using the Expanded Black Levels option on the 360.
Plus you get 1080P on games and movies (DVD upscaling and HD-DVD), where component only gets 1080i on movies.

Use the new "Expanded" Black levels option under resolution and the colors are no longer washed out. They used to be until they added this option.

ok what are your settings for vga.Even though i have an elite now i might try the vga to see how the colors have improved.

Ill have to check when I get home for TV settings. But under Resolution on the 360, use 1920x1080, and under "Black Levels" choose Expanded.
There is almost no difference between VGA and HDMI on the 360, a little bit better at best. If I was just getting a new 360 though, I probably get the elite or the ugly looking halo premuim coming out in Sept. with HDMI.
lordofthenazgul 07-23-07, 01:44 PM Should I be using the VGA connection for my 360? How much of a difference is it than component?
As others have done I switched to VGA from component because of the 1080p output you can get from it watching HD-DVDs, as opposed to from the Component cables. The upscaling features were also a plus for me. As for game quality, not a HUGE difference in my opinion.
Anyway, it looks great on the Westy.
sangwpark 07-23-07, 01:58 PM Hi everyone, I'm new to this thread so bear with me. I have read through the entire thread, however. Took a loooong...time, but it was excellent! I've used, for my 42" Westinghouse that was purchased last week from BB, various color settings that were mentioned in this thread and for the most part I'm well-satisfied with the way this LCD displays with the various inputs I'm using.
BTW My build is 5112 I believe (it had June date...I'm in the office so I'm not 100% certain).
Some thoughts regarding the inputs:
HDMI1: using my PC (NVIDIA 7600), signal at 1920x1080 (set for 1080p). Very impressive! All the colors come out great. Games are playable, although at 1920x1080 on this videocard, games such as Quake 4 and Prey had a bit of lag, not enough to be bothersome during gameplay, but you do notice it. I do have FusionHDTV card on this one, and the HD signals through this card looks OK...not the greatest, but acceptable. DivX files look great! Impressive upscaling...although I'm not sure whether that's due to my computer/videocard combo or through the TV.
HDMI2: Toshiba HD-DVD player (HD-A1) with 1080i signal. Again...very impressive! Previously, this player was plugged into a DLP TV in the livingroom. To my eyes, it's a noticeable improvement on the Westinghouse 42" over DLP TV. No problem with HDMI handshake with this 1st Gen HD-DVD player. One thing I did notice on this TV is that minute I switch away from HDMI2, the player would report HDMI drop signal and stop the disc. Something I did not notice when it was plugged into a DLP TV. So, basically when I'm playing HD DVD, if I want to watch something else, even for a brief moment, I need to stop the HD DVD player; else I risk my 1st gen. HD DVD player crashing. Dunno if this is just an issue with this player and not on the newer Toshiba players...
TV: Combo of QAM on the clear and Analog (2 thorough 99) from Comcast. Local HD channels look better through this TV's tuner than through above-mentioned FusionHDTV card via HDMI/1080p/Computer. Analog...it's watchable when I'm 10 ft away from the TV. By far the worst looking of the 3 HDTV setups I have at home.
A/V: Original Panasonic Showstopper ReplayTV PVR: similar to Analog above, although it might be slightly better.
Overall: No dead/stuck pixels. No apparent defects. Will wait 2 more weeks to see if any problems (that have been discussed in this thread) show up before deciding whether or not to purchase the extended warranty. So far so good after 1 week.

pauldarkjr 07-23-07, 02:00 PM Hey bhazard, Does your new set still flicker with the ps3? Just wondering. I haven't heard anyone mention it being a problem in a while. I need to call Westinghouse again and pester them some more. :-) I have come to the conclusion that it is definitely a HDCP handshaking issue because none of my other devices flicker when input through HDMI and I have been running my pc from my computer room @1080p via a 50' DVI cable without a single sparkle or drop out.
UlysisAM 07-23-07, 02:40 PM When my PS3 was in HDMI 2, blue horizontal lines were flickering during gameplay.
However, when I moved the HDMI cable to HDMI 3, no flickering whatsoever.
Also, I don't have any flickering from my PC, as it is hooked up to the Westinghouse via a DVI-to-HDMI cable at 1980x1080 from an ATI Radeon X1900 with 512MB of RAM. Runs very, very smooth.
I'm loving this TV more and more. Sure, SD sucks, but it's like that on all HDTVs.

New set flickers more than the old one did (about once a day now), but only with the PS3. I havent used the PC at 1080p yet on this new tv, but I'm thinking its a PS3 issue at this point. My Motorola box at 1080i has not dropped out yet.
This new set wont autosource through HDMI either, the other one did.
mnksauce 07-23-07, 03:23 PM Anyone know where i can get one of these 12% BB coupons? i know there was one around 4th of july time and i can't for the life of me find the one everyone is using now? my 30 day price guarantee is up on the 28th and i would love to have my 4 year PSP paid for :P
Well the coupon I used was for July 20-23, it came in the mail. I was lucky enough to get a guy who took the coupon off the sale price, got the TV for just over 1k. It is a crap shoot, I went back to BB yesterday to get the sale price on the surround sound I had purchased, I got unlucky with who took me, she shot me down since I had used a 10% off coupon, and she wouldn't take the coupon off a sale price. I am sure one of the other workers wouldn't have cared.
mnksauce 07-23-07, 03:40 PM ahhh crap, unless i can locate one today, i can't even try. oh well. looks like i'm just gonna eat a little less for a little while longer. haha thanks for the info.
bigdady92 07-23-07, 04:02 PM I'm noticing some sporadic 'banding' (I think it's called that) on certain HD pictures. Occasionally a black line is coming down the screen from time to time. you can see it one moment and the next it's gone. If you look hard you'll noctice it.
Is this normal?
craig5571 07-23-07, 04:10 PM hey,
I have had my 47" tx for about two weeks now and i notice that when i am watching my hr10-250 dtivo ( which is connected by hdmi) that i get a bunch of rotating line noise at the top of the screen and a blue dotted line along the right side of the tv. this is not there when i watch stuff from my toshiba xa2 hd dvd. nor is there from my other tivo a samsung sir4040r. it only appears on the hd tivo and only when using hdmi.
i thought i had saw something about this being caused by close captioning? is there any way to get rid of this noise? and the dotted bar on the right hand of the screen.
i spent a few hours searching this thread , but didn't find exactly my problem..
i would be super appreciative to anyone that can help.

kenpachi 07-23-07, 04:55 PM Well i guess it was bound to happen sooner or later, surely the new firmware didn't fix any isues with the ps3. My new 42' crapped out and its flickering  again.

crapped out as in no longer working? this is fixable with a 10 sec (actually almost 30sec) power button reboot

See if the 1.9 firmware coming out tomorrow makes things any better. Change your HDMI port to another one as well, and maybe try changing the cable for the heck of it.
kenpachi 07-23-07, 06:27 PM yeah i hope it does cause i like this tv alot, and i dont really want to pay the xtra money for another one.I just got this new cables friday but i will change the hdmi port.
[H]gregnash 07-23-07, 06:41 PM Hi guys,
New here at AVS but have been skulking this forum for sometime now in anticipation of being able to buy a new TV!!! I have read through both this thread and the anticipation thread as well as the Vizio VU42LF thread and bits and pieces of the LG and Philips threads. From what I can tell 40" to 42" inches is what I can afford in an LCD, with a nominal viewing distance of about 8ft max.
Well, seeing as I am trying to pay for a wedding and in my master's program my budget is limited and for the price it seems that they toss-up is between the TX-42F430 or Vizio VU42LF monitors. I have seen both in the wild and truth be told I like that Westy better but the fact that Costco offers a 2yr warranty, no questions asked on top of the 1y of Vizio is causing a bit of a disturbance in the force.
I have a semi decent AVR/HT setup so far with a Sony STR-DG500 AVR connected to a pair of Polk Audio RT-25' for fronts and then a old pair of Sony floor stands for the back (old pair from the late 80's early 90's). I have a progressive scan Sony DVD player that is about 8 months old and all this is connected to my Sony KD-32FS120. Unfortunately, the thing only does 480i (and horribly at that) so I talked my fiance' into letting me upgrade with our new entertainment center we will be getting this week. Currently, I only have my Wii connected via Component and do not have any HD sources (as the TV never had the ability). Once we get the tv setup and everything I plan on getting an HD box through Charter but have a few questions.
1. I have a 2yr old Tivo that only does SD, will this affect the image as I have my cable come from the wall -> Cable box -> Tivo -> TV. Connect from Tivo to Tv is via S-Video cable.
2. With my AVR I cannot find anywhere in the manual that say whether or not it will pass through the image (i.e. if I have a 1080i image going through it will not corrupt or downsample the image) if I run it through Component.
3. It seems that there have been a few problems with the newest firmware updates, how hard is it to get someone out to update the firmware or is there something I can do to convince Westy to send me the update so that I can plop it on myself?
4. There still seems to be a problem with the audio out of the TV passing the 5.1 DD, so I guess my best bet would be to run the RCA cables for audio directly to the AVR? Or have a missed something in there?
5. Currently, the only "HD" system that I have is my Wii connected via component (only 480p). I believe I read somewhere that this will overscan the image and try to upscale it to fit the screen size. Is that correct or am I reading things?
6. HD Cable boxes - is there a fee for getting them from your cable company other than the HD services that are added on?
7. Has anyone compared this with the VU42LF or comparably priced set side by side to see which was better? Or a better buy?
8. Ah the age old question; 720p vs. 1080p!! At a nominal distance of 8ft for viewing will I really see that much of a difference in HD? I really do not plan on hooking up a PC to this nor can I afford to purchase an Xbox 360 or a GD PS3 so 1080p does not seem to be a necessity.
9. Recommendations?
So here is my dilemma, pay a bit more for the Westy which I like the physical look of and add on a 2yr or 4yr PSP (ex-BB employee so I know how they work, was a tech before they put that GS **** in) or buy the VU42LF that is a little cheaper with the Costco extended warranty. Or scratch both sets all together and get a 720p set for even cheaper?
Thanks much and everyone here has had some great, informative posts (much better than most the emo-children over at the [H] displays thread.
tokiidokii 07-23-07, 09:04 PM Hello everyone,
i'm very new to the HD scene and this is my very first HD tv. i got my set friday and it has a build date of june 26, 2007 with the firmware ver of 5112_1.3.0. i've been reading alot about his set and so far i am very pleased with the performance. (yay for no dead pixels :p)
i have a PS3 hooked up and been putting it through the paces. i think i left it on for about 8-10hrs on saturday and i haven't seen any 'flickering' issues some of you seem to have. does this problem creep up sooner or later? the only 'flickering' i see is when the PS3 switches resolution i think (say from 720 to 1080, etc. and it's very slight), but i do not see any flickering whatsoever when playing games or watching movies. and i don't seem to have any 'handshaking' issues either.
i've never experienced any drop outs and my set autosources everything. can any of you take a pic of this so called 'flickering' for reference if it does happen?
ok now that that's out of the way. i'd like to share my opinion on the set. aside from the cheap price, i was really surprise at the quality of the picture. now it's not a bravia but the pq is def better than i expected.
i am very anal when it comes to color and i am tempted to get the avia dvd. however, i'd like to share the settings which to me makes the tv well worth it. just a little disclaimer, these settings where done using a PS3 with a reference image i use for my pc lcd.
here goes:
PS3 settings: only thing i changed was in the 'display setting'. i turned the 'RBG Full Range (HDMI)' setting to 'Full'
for the tv: color settings
Settings: User Calibration (yes): Color Temp (warm: R-145, G-140, B-160): Brightness-40: Contrast-60: Saturation-50: Hue-45: Sharpness-0
i also turned the backlight down to 50.
now, if possible, can any of you who set their color using the avia dvd take a quick gander at my settings and please give an honest opinion about whether or not i should pick it up. calibration was done by eye with the lights on (fluorescent). when watching movies or playing games in the dark, the colors are still amazing (heeh personal opinion :p). anyway, i'm not asking for anyone who painstakingly calibrated their tv with the avia dvd to share/give away their settings but i just really want to know if i have a long ways off to go when it comes to calibrating and if i will greatly benefit from getting an avia dvd if my settings are complete crap lol.
i included some images i took with the lights off (none retouched, just cropped in photoshop). please pardon my crappy picture taking skills.
and thanks everyone for helping me decide on a new tv :D

1. The SD Tivo through S-video will degrade your pic quality tremendously. Get an HD cable box with DVR and feed the TV through HDMI or DVI w adapter. If you absolutely have to, use component cables.
2. Your receiver most likely will not pass a 1080p signal. If you are using a device that only goes up to 1080i, it might pass video through. You can hook HDMI from your devices into the TV, and you can pass the audio through the optical port on the TV to your receiver.
3. There are no true firmware updates yet. The June 26 models have a different firmware number, but no new features or fixes that are documented.
4. TV can pass 5.1 fine EXCEPT if you use an antenna for OTA. The device you want 5.1 from MUST be set to pass through 5.1 via HDMI.
5. The TV is pixel mapped 1:1, so you get 100% of what you are supposed to see. I do use fill mode for Wii though.
6. There might be a box fee, but its worth every penny. Some offer DVR services like Tivo as well.
7. I think the westy is a bit better video quality wise right now. There is a new vizio and sceptre coming out that looks interesting.
8. I can always see a difference in 720p v 1080p. The price is low enough to just go 1080p.
9. Great TV for the price. Satisfies my 1080p craving without killing my bank account.
kenpachi 07-23-07, 10:10 PM well for me the flickering happened within time.I went 1 week with my first set without any flickering, but after that it was flickering mania. Now on this second set i only seen it flicker 5 times since friday that i got it.Oh and my last one flickered with everything accept pc.I think the pc didn't flicker cause i'm using a converter

I'll throw my 2 cents in here.
4. The TV doesn't pass 5.1 through the cable line for me, but it does do 5.1 through the HDMI for my PS3. :)
5. The Wii issue isn't caused by the TV, but by the Wii itself, from what I understand.
6. Not sure what you are asking, but I am watching the Country music thing on ABC HD right now, only because it's in HD :D , I do not have digital cable, only regular Comcast cable.
7. I looked at the VU42LF at Costco when they first came out and it, to me, looked washed out and I couldn't for the life of me get it to look "good". That was the killer for me, I almost bought that one. Finally got the TX42 right after that.
8. I personally can see the difference when viewing at Best Buy, I'll look at a 720P and say it looks real good, then look at a 1080P right after and I can see the difference, but to someone who has no 1080P sources it may not be such a big deal. That really is a personal preference depending on your budget, etc.
BTW, the Costco warranty is not on top of the manufacturer's warranty, it is extended to 2 years. And the warranty extension is not no questions asked, but their 90 day return policy is no questions asked.
I hope I was of some assistance.

They were speaking of the forthcoming PS3 firmware update. There are no plans to EVER have a firmware update for the WESTY apparently. Although that would be nice!

I wouldn't say no plans ever. There is always the chance of a friendly tech who accidently leaks a firmware update. It is over USB after all. They really should offer updates via their website.

Awww that sux if true. I thought thats the purpose of usb port in the TV, to update firmware (i read that in the manual and some other internet publication)
I thought the PS3 just updated their firmware a short while ago (to upconvert dvd), they updated it again now? Wow. I need to get PS3 like ASAP.
Btw, just pick up this TV today, paid $103x, and so far so good but i only try it with the very basic analog cable and "ancient" DVD player with yellow, white, red connection. I'm surprised the standard def cable looks pretty good and the dvd are okay. I'm more of an audiophile than video tho, thats one of the main reason i bought LCD TV, to browse my massive music collection easily on a big screen from the HTPC (FLAC encoded, of course :) )

I'm liking these settings. It does seem like it is pushing blue a bit. I dont think anyone has played around with RGB yet, The Warm color temp setting was good enough for me.

I guess I'm being overly critical :o .
I guess I'm a little jaded with having to return my first set, and the broken remote with the second and hearing about the people on here saying what the service department told them about firmware updates etc.
It should be easy enough to do a firmware update, but that's not saying it will be done, here's to hoping they do.
I really do love this TV, the ability for it to be a 1080P monitor and very nice at that, great picture quality, yeah yeah yeah it's no Sony but did we save at least $800 dollars or what?

Welcome to the TX owners club.
The PS3 updates their firmware regularly, at the beginning they had a firmware update each week, really to fix "issues" on the fly, but nonetheless very nice. I'll tell you the PS3 is a great buy. Apparently very reliable and stable, Blue Ray (very nice), 1080P upconversion (very nice), Hard Drive to store pictures/music etc. (nice) Wi-Fi (without a keyboard HORRIBLY painful, but a nice feature regardless), and of course gaming ability. All this for about the price of a typical Blue Ray player.
Back on topic, keep us abreast of your impressions and what not with the new TV, Good luck.

pauldarkjr 07-24-07, 09:46 AM I just got off the phone with a woman from Westinghouse customer service. I spoke to her about the flickering issue again. She said that the engineering department is unable to recreate the flickering problem on any of there sets that they are testing so my best bet is to just exchange the set if possible to the store where I bought it. She said that the engineering department doesn't belive it can be fixed via a firmware update since not all the sets are exhibiting the issue. This Fu#king sucks. I just got off the phone with a woman from Westinghouse customer service. I spoke to her about the flickering issue again.
First let me say I am not trying to annoy people on this thread - I really wish everyone the best of luck with their set.
However after getting a similar comment from customer service I decided to go with the Philips 47PFL7432D/37. There is also a version of this set(47PFL7422D/37) without 'ambilight' which you can likely find for close to the Westy price.
What you lose with the Philips: VGA, 1 HDMI port
What you gain with the Philips: less bugs (still some minor ones though), firmware updates every couple of months, and Philips representatives posting in the threads.
Here are the threads:

I have a TX-42 that gets these white lines...but only when I run the HDMI to HDMI cable from the cable box.
I found an odd way that gets rid of this problem, until you change the channel. When I see the garbled white line, I just press the "Fill" "Overscan" button to cycle the thing and revert back to "Standard".
Strangely enough, the line disappears! Try this method, hopefuly it works for someone else too!
[H]gregnash 07-24-07, 11:28 AM Thanks for the help guys. Seems like this set is my best bet, now just to hope that it goes down in price. However, I do like that BB states on their website a 60 day price guarantee on all HDTV's. Looking at last years Black Friday adds it looks like there is a good chance that this may go on sale. So I will probably be waiting until some time in October to pick this thing up so that way I have time for the pricing guarantee to overlap Black Friday and Cyber Monday. On thing that I did not see on this particular unit was an RJ-22 (phone jack) connection? I know that a few LCD makers do this for firmware updates but I am assuming this is not the same with the Westy?
Josh7289 07-24-07, 11:30 AM I have a few questions:
1) How is the color accuracy on this TV? I've heard bad things about the color accuracy on the Sharp LC-32GP1U and that it cannot be adjusted. How is this TV?
2) How does this TV compare with Westinghouse's monitor line of 1080p LCDs, like their LVM-37w3? How is the picture quality, color accuracy, backlight, etc.?
3) I'm currently looking for a 1080p LCD (most likely to be purchased toward the end of the year). The cheapest ones I have found are this TX-42F430S and the Sharp LC-32GP1U (or D62U). Everything else in the price range seems to not have PQ as good as the Westinghouse, including the Vizio VU42LF, or so I've heard. I also heard about the upcoming Vizio GV42LF and Sceptre X46BV-FullHD, but so far it doesn't seem like these two TVs will be able to compete with the Westinghouse as far as price goes. That said, are there any other 1080p TVs of note in this price range that I am missing? Is there anything announced or rumored to be coming out soon or by the end of the year that I may have missed?
Thanks!

The flickering of this set is definetly annoying, but i'm going to just live with it for now. I watched an upconverted dvd last night and it flickered many times, and dropped the signal TWICE! Yes, this is only with the ps3.. I do get flicker/dropouts w/ the motorola fios dvr, but it's very rare. I'm sure glad I got the psp on this thing because if it's not fixed by the end of the year, it's going back.
Does anyone know how the best buy psp's(service plan)( work? I understand you would normally get just the same set, but if you have the same problems w/ another one, will they give you credit (of your original purchase price) towards a new tv? Thanks

Are they testing it with the offending device specifically (the playstation 3)? Usually a resolution to something like this won't come until they work directly with Sony to resolve whatever signal output irregularity is causing the trouble.
mnksauce 07-24-07, 01:13 PM I updated my PS3 to 1.90 last night and it seemed to help the flickering issue. I never really had problem s with the flicker until earlier yesterday. I updated later that night and watched benchwarmers on bluray as well as played resistance fall of man for about 1.5 hours and haven't had a problem since. I got drop out when i first got the set but it hasn't been an issue ever since. I have to remember to go and get my PSP though, before my 30 days are up.
Does the TX-47F430S support 1080p/24? I'm considering purchasing a Toshiba HD-A2 and I'm wondering if I should get the HD-A20 instead. From what I've read the HD-A20 is getting a firmware update to support direct 1080p/24 output.
I've also read that this TV does support 3:2 pulldown. So basically I'm trying to figure out if the HD-A20 with 24fps is worth $100. I have the feeling that eliminating judder is worth it.
bhazard 07-24-07, 01:34 PM I just got off the phone with a woman from Westinghouse customer service. I am getting really sick of returning these tv's. And this really sucks because this one doesn't have anything else wrong with it! AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHGGGGGGG!!!!
For me, changing from connecting to HDMI2 to HDMI3 has fixed the issue of autosourcing and flickering so far. Try a diff port and see if it helps.
The TV would not autosource on HDMI2 w PS3, but does now w HDMI3. I may change my cable box to HDMI4, as it does not autosource on HDMI1 either.
My first tv didnt have this issue.
pauldarkjr 07-24-07, 02:16 PM Are they testing it with the offending device specifically (the playstation 3)? Usually a resolution to something like this won't come until they work directly with Sony to resolve whatever signal output irregularity is causing the trouble.
Its not just the PS3, it also happened with my cable box last night while watching Discovery HD theater. And yes, the lady on the phone said that they had been testing the sets with a ps3. It flickers for me on all the HDMI ports, I have tried everything. I figure I will return it one more time and if that doesn't fix ALL the problems, I will be RMA'ing it back to Westinghouse on THERE dime. I already got the ok from them but don't want to be without a tv for a month. I had to go through that with the LVM-42w2 and it sucked.

i just got this set last friday and all this flickering/issues/bugs are getting me worried. so far i haven't had a problem but it seems like over time there's a good possibility that the hdmi or something else might crap out... it's a great tv considering the price/performance but is it bad to prematurely worry about this before it happens to me and start to consider getting a different tv? or am i just getting way ahead of myself... i mean i love the tv... but if worst comes to worst, i guess i would have to cough up more money that i anticipated :(

Nah, no worries. The TV has only been around for less than 2 months. If you have a service plan, you shouldn't stress at all. In fact, if they dont fix the little bugs down the line (I think they will), its a great excuse to jump to another set later in the year when prices come down or more features are added. 52" could be real nice :)
gregnash']Thanks for the help guys. I know that a few LCD makers do this for firmware updates but I am assuming this is not the same with the Westy?
theres a USB port for that, but as reported in this thread Westinghouse has no plans to release these updates to consumers

Not completely true. No decision has been made yet, they are still debating the issue so it is still possible.

If they don't ever update the firmware then what good is the usb port? :(

Emonroe 07-24-07, 05:32 PM This TV has extreme issues with the PS3 and HDMI...not so much the Elite, although the issue does pop up. I'm beginning to think that the problem is more with the PS3 than the TV's.

It is probably both, but moreso the PS3. I do know it is HDMI/HDCP related, because xbox360 at 1080p via VGA is flawless. If you check the forums the PS3 even flickers on some of Sony's brand of TVs.
Strangely enough, my cable box on HDMI at 1080i has never flickered once.
[H]gregnash 07-24-07, 06:24 PM Does anyone know how the best buy psp's(service plan)( work? I understand you would normally get just the same set, but if you have the same problems w/ another one, will they give you credit (of your original purchase price) towards a new tv? Thanks
Ok dont quote me on this as my knowledge is a bit rusty but this is what I remember from the Tech dept.
1. ANYTHING over 40" they should come to you to fix it, you should not bring it to them
2. PSP is a service plan not a replacement plan, however depending on the severity of the problem they may replace the item outright with a new one. That is up to the discretion of the managers not the tech's (something I got fired for).
3. Normally, if they do REPLACE the item they will give you store credit towards whatever you want OR replace it with a COMPARABLE item. Keyword is COMPARABLE, they will try and match it up PRICE WISE FIRST and FOREMOST and then spec for spec. Do a little haggling if you are not getting the one you feel is Comparable.
4. Remember the problem must be easily duplicated and if they see the problem is with only one componenet (ie everything works fine except with the PS3) they will tag that as an incompatibility issue and thus will deem it as not a defective item.
Hope that helps.
unclben 07-24-07, 08:26 PM After lurking on these forums for a couple years, I'm finally ready to upgrade over my 27" CRT. The TX-47 looks like a good panel at a good price, and I'm about to pull the trigger (Best Buy online). I'll be using this display mainly for Xbox/360/Wii, with a little bit of DVD and OTA TV thrown in as well.
I'm really just worried about buyer's remorse. People on this board have talked about getting this set well below $1500 at BB, but it seems to be at MSRP ($1700) right now. Is BB's 60-day price match straightforward, or are there a lot of 'gotchas' and fine print?
Thanks a bunch to you all for writing so much about your experiences. It really helps to hear what not-the-salesperson thinks, and professional LCD TV reviews (that's I've found, at least) don't cover much of the plethora of models that we all have to consider.

If you can hold off for another couple months I would buy something around the end of September - beginning of October so that way, should it happen to go on sale after Thanksgiving then you are set for the price match.
Thankfully for me I still have a few friends that work at my old BB and one of which is now the Dept Head of Magnolia and Home Theatre. I went and talked to her today and she said that if I can wait that is the best bet, then should it go on sale ANYWHERE I can come in and they would do the price match. She is trying to get me into a better set than the TX-42F430, something more along the lines of a high end Phillips or Samsung and said she would meet me half way for the difference. So come Sept/Oct I should have something new. Also, she said she is expecting to see some new models from Sony, Philips and one other brand if I remember correctly. Hopefully, I will be able to catch and last years model on sale!! :D
bgask1717 07-25-07, 01:22 AM Hey guys sorry for the newbie question, but is it possible to alter the preset video settings? Since the user setting seems to be universal for all HDMI inputs, is it possible to change the other video settings (Enhanced, Sports, Cinema and Game). Every thing seems to be grayed out except for the color temperature on these. Just wanted to know if anybody knew something that I didn't. Thanks in advance.

Good Morning bhask1717,
You should find that all sources, (PC, HDMI1~4, S-Video, YPbPr 1~2, TV) each can be adjusted with "User Setting". Go to each source you have attached and the Westy Service Menu bar selections change for each of your inputs, and thus the "User Setting" for "Video" can be independently manipulated, and will stick with that connected device unless you force/choose "Video Reset" from the Service Menu.
Hope this answers you question.

Thanks for the reply Woobieizer,
But is it possible to actually change the settings in Sports, Movie, Enhanced? They all come pre-programmed and I wanted to know if I could actually change those. That way I do not have the same calibrated "User Setting" for all of my HDMI inputs. I would like to change the color and sharpness of the game setting but do not know if the Westy will allow me....am I stuck with the Game, Sports, Cinema settings that it shipped from the factory with? Thanks again!

Thank you for your reply. NO you can not touch the PRE SETS
YES you can change your Video > Mode > User > Brightness, Contrast, Saturation, Hue, Sharpness, Backlight, Color Temp. (read on if you dare) I need your help more than you need mine.
Answer this: Can you verify that each HDMI-1~4 > Video > Mode > User > tWeaKiNg > input can not be programed with independent "Setting"? If YES (My Setting are Static between HDMI devices). Then sorry, I beg your forgiveness, find a GURU and skip reading the rest.
If NO (They are Dynamic or I think they did change), then proceed with next tedious step to confirm.
Lets just say for testing .. you have only two HDMI devices. One is on HDMI-1, the other is on HDMI-2. You will Tweak HDMI-1 with more contrast than HDMI-2.
Tune to HDMI-1 via remote, access Service Menu -
configure HDMI-1 as desired:
HDMI-1 > Video > Mode > User > Contrast 70 > Exit
Tune to HDMI-2 via remote, access Service Menu -
configure HDMI-2 as desired:
HDMI-2 > Video > Mode > User > Contrast 40 > Exit
Tune back to HDMI-1, is your setting still on 70, if so then you can Tweak the setting for all HDMI ports to be different, base on your taste. IF not I will refund the money you owe me
I just want to understand if the 4 HDMI ports can hold individual Video Setting. I can say with conviction that my set will hold individual Video Setting for each device I have connected.
Give me a shortcut.. OK
Let say you know your Baseline preferred setting will be like tokiidokii Post 1893 "AVID DVD "User Calibration" (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=11105673&&#post11105673), Or like one of the Pre-Sets, Jot down the figures you like and proceed to:
Service Menu > Setting > User Calibration > Yes > Do your Baseline
Then go tune to each HDMI-1~4 > Video > Mode > User > Add/Remove Cowbell as need > Exit
Now you can go back to the more important facets of life...... like getting some shuteye.. :)

As explained to me at BB, the 60-day price match can be done, but if you used a coupon to buy it and then later it's cheaper and another coupon is out, you have to do that within the 30-day return time frame because that has to be done as a refund and another sale. The 30-day price match extension for HD TV's is a refund only off the current sale price and the price you paid (after any incentives like coupons, etc). If you use a BB credit card to take advantage of no interest financing, then you want to be careful of doing a refund and another sale during the first 30-days because you might lose out on your financing deal.

Xcalibur_255 07-25-07, 12:19 PM Just a thought, but this could be related to the handling of 1080p video signals by the tv. Those of you who are experiencing the flicker are probably using the 1080p option with their PS3. Try changing it to 1080i (or even 720p) for a day or so and see if the issue is still going on. Best thing is to systematically eliminate possible causes one by one and this is a decent enough place to start.

Motorstorm flickered for me and it runs in 720P. It is most likely a HDCP handshake issue.
As a heads up, CNET posted a review of Sony's new STR-DA5300ES receiver today, in which they also noted that they were testing the receiver's GUI using the TX-47. Since CNET now has the TX-47 in their labs and Katzmaier was editing that Sony review, it seems likely that he, or one of the other CNET folks, will have a review of the TX up soon.

Dipset420 07-25-07, 02:40 PM Why does it take Cnet so long to put up reviews on the tv's.
i'm looking into getting a new tv and i'm most likely going to either get this set at 42 inches or the vizio 42 inch 1080p.
has anyone here had both of these and which would you choose, the only reason why i dont want this tv is because of all the flickering issues, and this is mostly from the ps3 right?? and you cant get 5.1 surround sound when you have your ps3 hoooked up to the tv using HDMI??

I get 5.1 surround through the TV with my PS3, movies and games. It didn't at first, but I changed the sound setting on the ps3 and there we go 5.1 surround sound. :)
BTW I have HDMI from the PS3 to the TV and Optical to the reciever.
huggybear 07-25-07, 03:21 PM Hi all, just got back to my TX-47 after 2 weeks vacation.... looks even better now after seeing some friends' LCDs (LGs) and my folks' Samsung (forgot the model # but it is a 720p that cost more than twice as much as the TX-47).
It appears that someone else (Lutch) had their set die after boot up. I think that's a total of 3 invcluding myself with the exact same symptoms. Sounds like a couple of lemons got into the batch.
I just watched the American Psycho bluray on my PS3 last night... not a single flicker or dropout. My first TX didn't have any flickering problems either.
For me, the only real flaw is the lack of 5.1 from the internal tuner... it def. sounds like something that can be fixed with a firmware update if they decide to release one (since the hardware is capable of passing through 5.1 and the ability to select different audio sources from the internal tuner is present in the menu).
Other than that, I couldn't be happier with the set. Every person who comes into my house complements it.
Welcome back huggybear.
Yeah my first set died and the new one is nice, but it does have a "flashlight" in the upper left corner that bugs me every now and then. Neither set flickered, but it does flash green and what not when the PS3 is changing resolutions, not a big deal really. I would really like to have 5.1 ability through the TV tuner, but it works when it is really needed; for DVD's and games :D.

yea that flashing green thing... does any other tv do that when it's changing res/handshaking or w/e? i just got the 42incher (love it btw!) and the first time i saw that, it kinda scared me so i just want to know if that's a normal thing in all lcd's when playing blu-rays or playing ps3 games. i mean it's won't ruin the panel will it?

That green flash while changing resolutions is perfectly normal. No worries.
huggybear 07-25-07, 04:48 PM That green flash while changing resolutions is perfectly normal. No worries.
Yup, happens to me everytime I boot into Linux and the PS3 goes from 480 to 1080p - no different than a computer monitor flickering/going blank for a second when you change resolutions on your computer. Nothing to worry about.
Same goes for when you are initiating a disc. The only time I'd worry is if it does it out of the blue in the middle of a game or movie when the res hasn't changed.

Dipset420 07-25-07, 08:00 PM So which tv would you guys get, this westinghouse that's 42 inches or the new vizio 42 inch 1080p model when it comes to PQ in HD and durability.
BB has the westinghouse and costco has the vizio. i like how i can return it to costco if i have any problems within in 90 days which is good. but BB has the better deal since i can get a 4 year warranty and a free surround sound system.
do you think this sets PQ in HD would be the same or better than my 3-4 year old rear projection dlp 1080i mitsubishi ws-55313
so any advice would be much appreciated.

Dipset420 07-25-07, 11:16 PM this is such a hard decision because I will probably buy a ps3 for blu-ray but it seems as though EVERYONE is having problems with it on this tv. and i really do not want to have to deal with best buy if there is a problem with flickering and stuff.
but other than that i heard that the PQ is better than the vizio and the tv itself obviously looks better.
beside the flickering and some surroundsound problems has there been any other problems with this tv, i cant read through any more pages to see if there is :o
still cant decide hopefully i will make the decision soon

Well, I've been lurking around this thread along with the one on the Vizio for a few months now.
I had the exact same question as you did, but decided today that I wanted the Westinghouse more than the Vizio. Bought it a few hours ago and spent time up to this post playing PS3(1.90 firmware).
Looks great, but had a handshake problem. Once, out of 5 or 6 times. May get more annoying, I dunno. I'll exchange it if it does though.
While Costco has a great return policy for their goods, I liked the Westy's PQ and connectivity better, what with 4 HDMI ports. I don't plan on returning it anyway, unless it craps out within 30 days(BB's policy).
I must admit, the casing of the display itself also swayed me slightly.
It just looks better than the Vizio. If TVs were women, it'd be a sexy knockout in a little black number. The Vizio seems cheaper to me, visually.
Once I scrape together enough money, I'll get a HDMI capable A/V reciever for it(thinking Pioneer). The speakers are a little less than what I want(though no less than what I expected), and I want to be able to connect my headphones to the set for midnight viewing.
Overall, I am satisfied with my choice. I was going to get the Vizio, but the Westy just seemed more capable for the long haul. It does everything I want it to, and I feel it's a superior product comared to the Vizio.
One small problem though, when I hook up my Wii to the Westy using component, it looks better at 480i than it does at 480p. 480p makes the image more pixelated and choppy. Is this due to my settings or is that just how its supposed to be? Can I make it smoother and more visually appealing? I didn't have this problem with my Sony GrandWEGA DLP. I don't even know if it's the Wii's fault or the TV's fault.
iLoveSax 07-25-07, 11:35 PM For the people who successfully output 1080p, could you post what kind of video card are you using?
I'm thinking of nvidia 8800gt but unsure if it free of overscan problem and ATI just released new firmware that supposedly fix the overscan issue. I'm basically looking for video card that is 1080p LCD TV friendly. So...what do you guys think?
XFX Nvidia 7600GS 256MB w/ dual DVI. Works perfectly in Windows XP and Linux at 1920x1080.
Great TV. I have had some issues with the set picking up a signal after going into E.Saver mode. Other than that it's been a great purchase.

I'm thinking of nvidia 8800gt but unsure if it free of overscan problem and ATI just released new firmware that supposedly fix the overscan issue. I'm basically looking for video card that is 1080p LCD TV friendly. So...what do you guys think?
I'm using Nvidia 7950GT, no problems.
bgask1717 07-26-07, 01:40 AM Thank you for your reply.
Now I am fairly new to this but from my experience the "User Setting" has been universal for all HDMI inputs. I am currently waiting on a second HDMI source but when I set contrast 50 on HDMI 1 and contrast 70 on HDMI 2 they stay different until i actually take the PS3 out of HDMI 1 and connect it to HDMI 2. As soon as it plugs into HDMI 2 it changes from a contrast of 70 to a contrast of 50. Maybe things differ if you try to alter the settings with two different "active" HDMI ports? Can anybody confirm/deny that the "user setting" can be independent for each HDMI port?
[H]gregnash 07-26-07, 01:44 AM One small problem though, when I hook up my Wii to the Westy using component, it looks better at 480i than it does at 480p. 480p makes the image more pixelated and choppy. Is this due to my settings or is that just how its supposed to be? Can I make it smoother and more visually appealing? I didn't have this problem with my Sony GrandWEGA DLP. I don't even know if it's the Wii's fault or the TV's fault.
Any chance you can post pics of what you are talking about. I have a Wii that I plan on hooking up to this once I get the set. I am curious as to what you see.

Don't forget,, HDCP compliant. w/HDMI out. When I was first browsing for information on this Westinghouse TV, I was also doing some poking around looking for a new Video Card w/HDMI. And until your recent post, one that is also HDCP compliant. As it turns out this market is low on reviews and is possibly going to bottom out soon, due to Displayport (http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/03/displayport-to-support-hdcp-too/) ♦ Let me know what you all think.

using ATI Mobility x1600..outputting through VGA, for me its overscanned once when turning the display back on after being idle for a while..but I refreshed the display through the pc menu and it went back to normal..its also twice set the resolution to 1280x720 when starting the notebook up without the display on..and a couple days ago i could not adjust the clock (frequency settings) on the display when I turned it on (stuck at either 0 or 1, normally allows from 0-255), but most of the time its sharp right as I turned it on
something strange I noticed on my 42TX is that the red text on the front page looks funny..is it just me
kentondb 07-26-07, 10:55 AM Are users having issues with the HDMI out on the X360 Elite?
Josh7289 07-26-07, 10:56 AM So, echoing some questions about Wii (and other 480p or 480i games and material on this TV), how does the TX series handle these sources? How does 480p Wii look and play (and lag) on it? How about older 480i games?
Finally, how does standard 480i analog cable look, assuming a decent enough signal is present? Maybe you can compare it to the Panasonic TH-42PD50U or TH-42PX60U (even though this Westy is 1080p)?
And that reminds me...If the PQ on lower-than-HD sources is bad, then why? Is it the resolution or what?
There are a lot of questions there, but I hope some people here can help to answer them.
Thanks!

I'm having pretty good, but not perfect results with an HD 2400Pro. I did have the underscan issue, but between 'fixmyunderscan.exe' and the new ati drivers which allow you to specify '0% overscan', the issue went away.
The HD playback is very good on the card, but it depends on your system, OS, drivers, video file, cpu, overheating, etc. If you can afford it, some are having less issues with the 2600 series.
Here's a thread I started with details about the 2X00 radeons:

The Wii looks better at 480i because the TV does a better job at scaling than the Wii does. Leaving it in 480i is fine.
I took a pic of paper mario early on in the thread, looks quite nice on the tv. The Wii doesnt even come close to the pic of ps3 or xbox360 though (obviously).
I also need to use "fill" mode on the Wii to get the full widescreen picture.

TX handles the Wii and 480i sources pretty nicely, better than a lot of lcds (no lag either), but no tv that has a native resolution of 1080p will ever look as nice as an old crt tv does with 480i material. They are slowly getting better and better at it, but these tvs are made for HD.

No offense but that doesn't really make any sense. The difference between 480i and 480p for non-film video material is literally a doubling of picture data. The tv is forced to make it's best guess when deinterlacing that content, and in this case we're lucky enough that the Trident chipset is motion adaptive so areas of the screen without movement will retain full resolution. Setting a gamecube or Wii to output 480i means every other scan line is just black, whereas sending 480p sends full frames of video to the display. Particularly with movement on the screen sending the 480p signal natively is absolutely the better option. Internal processing from the tv may be sharpening or compensating in some way making the picture look okay, but the plain fact is that if there is movement on screen up to 50% of the image data is simply not there when displaying 480i. This is why lots of people call 1080i "540p" because only 50% of the signal contains video information at any given time. Hope that makes sense, I'm missing my caffeine today. :) At 480p the Wii should look smooth and probably slightly soft given the resolution, but I don't even need to do an eye check of the difference. Anybody who knows how interlaced vs. progressive works knows that it's ALWAYS better to use a progressive source when possible.
It's a shame that fill mode is needed in this instance, otherwise the picture would be quite a bit sharper with 1:1.
bhazard 07-26-07, 12:28 PM Its subjective, but I feel 480p through the Wii softens the picture too much. Its almost like seeing an upsampled ps2 game through ps3. Its not like the Wii is a visual powerhouse to begin with, and most games dont use much motion.
[H]gregnash 07-26-07, 12:33 PM It's a shame that fill mode is needed in this instance, otherwise the picture would be quite a bit sharper with 1:1.
That right there is probably why the screen looks "funky" at 480p on the displace. The 480p setting will smooth all lines and give the picture a slightly "fuzzy" feel. When this is coupled with the fill mode, the tv is stretching the image to accomodate the screen. Can someone try playing it with it in standard mode and report if they still see the "funky" and ugly look of 480p vs 480i?

Maybe this is an issue with my tv or Wii, but Wii in its widescreen setting does not output in widescreen, it stays at 4:3 and kills the aspect ratio. It actually squishes the picture in standard mode. Fill mode actually makes it display as it should.
Josh7289 07-26-07, 01:18 PM Yeah, that's how the Wii outputs "widescreen". Actually, all consoles except for 360 and PS3 that output in "widescreen" are not outputting widescreen in the truest sense. The 360 and PS3 output in 1280 x 720 or 1920 x 1080, which have natively 16:9 aspect ratios.
For Wii (and everything else), the system outputs in 480p max (which is a resolution of 720 x 480). The aspect ratio is independent of the resolution in this case. If you want a 16:9 image, the image will be outputted stretched vertically, so that when you tell your TV to stretch the image horizontally to fill the whole screen, you get an image that looks proportionally correct in the 16:9 aspect ratio. You gain no resolution, however, between having the Wii output in 4:3 or 16:9.
I hope that makes sense.

Thanks for that, and it makes sense. I was speculating that was why 480i apparently looks better. I'll still play in 480p, though, even if it gives a "softer" picture, it is a more "true" picture, since the TV doesn't have to "make up" image when using 480p (as opposed to 480i, where the TV may interpolate to add resolution or artificial sharpness).
jmmyz14 07-26-07, 01:58 PM Hi everyone,
I've read most of this forum, and it's freaking me out! Sounds like the Westy is very buggy. My Maxent 42" plasma EDTV crapped out on me, and BestBuy is letting me replace the unit. I was thinking of upgrading to the TX-47, but my major concern is that I own a ps3 and I do NOT want flickering, handshaking problems, or whatever else.
How many people have the TX-47 and ps3 and do NOT have issues???
Important note: Some people have flickering issues when using a this and a few other HDTVs with a Playstation 3. The problem occurs on some HDTVs when connected to a device that has strict HDCP enforcement through an HDMI connection, such as a Playstation 3. If your HDTV screen flickers on & off, connect your Playstation3 (or whichever HDMI device) to the TV using an HDMI-to-DVI cable, rather than HDMI-to-HDMI. If you rather use the TV's HDMI connection, try placing HDMI-to-DVI adapters on both ends of the HDMI, then use a DVI-to-DVI cable. HDMI and DVI signals are digitally interchangeable without any loss in quality. DVI does not carry a digital audio signal like HDMI does, but many HDTV owners have their audio through a digital optical cable to a Receiver, instead of using the TV's speakers. This Westinghouse display does support HDCP through DVI, so digitally encrypted video such as Blu-Ray movies should play at full 1080p through DVI.

The PS3 issues vary from TV to TV (and even on other brand tvs). The flickering issue is very random and varies on each TX. My first set flickered only twice in over a month, the set I have now flickers for a split second about once every night or two, and once dropped signal completely. Yes it can be somewhat annoying if and when it happens, but I have a feeling it will be fixed within a few months, either with a PS3 or TV firmware upgrade.
The upgrade in size, visual quality (aside from plasma's black levels) and resolution over what you had with the plasma EDTV would be worth it.

The TX sets do not have a DVI input. A good but inconvienient idea would be to put a dvi to hdmi adaper on top of an hdmi to dvi adapter on top of your hdmi cable and see what happens. Kinda clumsy, but this could work. I'd almost rather suffer with the flicker every so often though :)

True, but you could still try the DVI to HDMI adapter on both ends on a DVI to DVI cable.
tokiidokii 07-26-07, 02:43 PM Hi everyone,

i have the 42 westy (with ps3 i might add)... it's not even a week old also. so far i really don't have any issues with flickering and what not but i am keeping a close eye on it. no handshake problems either. i have a 9-5 job but whenever i get home, i pop in a blu ray movie and let it run all the way through to see if anything happens.
i'm very pleased with the westy but i too worry about the bugs/issue. especially long term because to be honest, i really like this set. it's cheap, sexy looking and after tweaking the colors/settings, i can tell you that the picture is great. it's my first hdtv so i can't really compare it to any others but being a graphic designer, i am very anal when it comes to color and detail especially (oh black levels are pretty good).
also, i should note that when i first got the tv, i accidentally plugged the ps3 in HDMI 4. no problems, video and audio worked flawlessly. however, when i switched to HDMI 1, the first thing i noticed is there seems to be some sort of 'skipping' with the audio. this is while being in xmb on ps3 but once i played the game it was gone. then last night, i played a blu ray movie as usual and lo and behold, the skipping was back. it seemed to have stayed the duration i was testing but i didn't watch the whole movie since i had to leave for an hour (i did let the movie run the duration though). i will check again if the skipping is there tonight since i really don't want to change HDMI ports.
yea i know that if the problem persists, the logical way is just change the HDMI port. well i dunno about you guys, i guess it's a principle thing, but i don't want to short change myself now and kind of 'ignore' this problem. besides, i believe i have slight perfectionist-ism disorder (don't we all! :p) or something so i know that it's going to bug me in knowing that HDMI 1 has an audio problem even if the other 3 don't
Just bought a TX-42F430S from Best Buy. So far have it connected to my Motorola 6412 via Componet. Going HDMI as soon as I buy the cable. I am getting concerned though as the main reason I bought this TV was to use with the PS3 which I will also buy soon. But this flicker thing is scaring me. I hope I don't get the issue.

How does this fix the the issue of flickering? Anybody tried this yet?
Just to clarify I am quoting this from a website - I have not tried this yet. I also read that one person said it is "dangerous" to use these adapters, but I have no idea if this is true or not.
Dipset420 07-26-07, 04:26 PM is the flickering that you guys are getting with the ps3 when you 1st turn on the ps3 or switch to the hdmi input and then it goes away or does it flicker on and off through games and blu-ray movies.
and has anyone used their ps3 with a component cable to see if the flickering keeps happening.
and one more question, has anyone had flickering problems with a regular stand alone blu-ray player, because that is what i will mostly be using on the tv along with plaing a 360 and a ps3 if it works with no problems
I have no personal experience but from what I have read through the many pages on this forum is that the flickering happens while watching movies and/or playing games. Based on what I read at a Playstation forum apparently the flickering does NOT happen with Componet. But I have not tested myself.

Flickering only happens for me on the PS3 over HDMI. It happens randomly sometimes during a game or movie. You can use component with no flicker, but you'll lose the ability to output blu-ray and possibly games in 1080p, and it wont look as good. The changing resolution flicker happens on just about any device, so that is not an issue.
You can probably use a dvi cable with DVI to HDMI adapters on both ends to stop the flickering, but you'll lose the ability to have HDMI pass audio through the TV. I'm probably going to try the dvi cable to see what happens in the near future. If you don't mind having your ps3 directly connected to your sound system, its probably the best way to go (if it works, but i think it will).
Josh7289 07-26-07, 05:09 PM Yeah, I'm definitley interested in seeing how that works. My main reason for wanting this TV is to use it with a PS3. Get to it, bhazard! :P

how long have you had your tv for?
I had the first one for 3 weeks, (no flickering) and I've had my second one for 1 week (no flickering).
BTW First set died.
kenpachi 07-26-07, 05:24 PM Wow! no picture loss on the convertion and i get sound thru the tv too

bhazard 07-26-07, 05:39 PM Hmm, since it is passing audio as well i'm thinking it might not work the way I thought. If it does work though, it is a very interesting workaround.
kenpachi 07-26-07, 05:42 PM well i have seen about 1o different trailers for movies and games and i cant really tell any difference between the hdmi and the converters.
bhazard 07-26-07, 05:53 PM well i have seen about 1o different trailers for movies and games and i cant really tell any difference between the hdmi and the converters.
There wont be any difference. What we're trying to do with the adapters is somehow fool the hdcp into working correctly and not dropping out. Since there is no DVI port on this TV, this is the only way to try it. I thought the dvi cable or adapter would kill the audio stream, which may stop the flicker. Who knows, we'll see. My adapters are being shipped. If this works, we keep the benefit of passing audio through the cable.
kenpachi 07-26-07, 05:55 PM well i guess at least i have an alternative if my tv starts to flicker :D i just hope it works when the time comes
