Why? is your current wall bracket not VESA 75mm or 100mm? Take another look.. your weight is good. If the VESA mm standard hold true on your current 30" it does not matter what the display size is, so you dont need to buy a new mount. :) Woobieizer 07-26-07, 06:48 PM Sure puts out a lot of heat though. When I first turn on the 360 the bottom half of the screen flickers green then it picks up the signal and all works fine. It sort of did that mirror image thing when I first selected 1920 x 1080 resolution (as is adjusted) but only for 1 or 2 seconds. Make sure your VGA cable is firmly in the 360 as sometimes it feels like its in but it isn't. Also when you do get a picture make sure to select "expanded black levels" as it really helps the pq. bgask1717 07-26-07, 10:31 PM I am using the VGA cable for my 360 and have had no problem. Thanks mph86 but I have now confirmed there is somthing wrong with the tv...the VGA for the computer came on for about 30 seconds then went out. Just says "No Input Signal." Looks like Westy #2 is going back to BB and from all the problems I had with the original Westy 42 inch 1080p (42w or something like that) and now the flickering with the first TX and the broken VGA input with the second I think I am done with Westinghouse. Not trying to be a troll im just very frustrated at all the time and effort it takes to return, re-set up, re-calibrate these sets. I am now 5 Westys deep (between the original and the TX) and none of them have worked properly. Congrats to all those who's sets are operating properly...they really are a good deal when they work. By the way both TX's had the April manufactured date. skimon 07-26-07, 10:46 PM Does anyone know the main difference between the Westy LVM model and the Westy TS model? If you rather use the TV's HDMI connection, try placing HDMI-to-DVI adapters on both ends of the HDMI, then use a DVI-to-DVI cable. HDMI and DVI signals are digitally interchangeable without any loss in quality. DVI does not carry a digital audio signal like HDMI does, but many HDTV owners have their audio through a digital optical cable to a Receiver, instead of using the TV's speakers. This Westinghouse display does support HDCP through DVI, so digitally encrypted video such as Blu-Ray movies should play at full 1080p through DVI. I don't know if this will work or not BUT from a pure technical standpoint all the DVI to HDMI would do is remove the digital audio connection. I am reasonably sure the DVI to HDMI adaptors are passive devices containing wires which connect the DVI pins to the corresponding video pins on the HDMI connector. That being the case how would that change anything. My 2 cents. MirclMax 07-27-07, 01:05 AM This thing (TX-47) seems to give off quite a bit of heat. Its not something I had really contemplated when making the purchase. I'm guessing its normal enough .. but it is *really* warm. I was wondering if anyone had come up with any ingenious solutions/workarounds to compensate for this. I'll just leave it wide open for a mixture of crazy/brilliant ideas. One thing that perhaps people could answer on a technical basis ... I have the screen in E-Saver mode .. and I have it go into standby mode (orange light) as the default "off" .. Is it still going to be generating heat (small bit .. same amount?) in this mode... would I be best to power it off completely? (As inconvenient as that might be). Looking forward to some good replies! Thanks all. Gritsyna 07-27-07, 01:15 AM This thing (TX-47) seems to give off quite a bit of heat. Looking forward to some good replies! Thanks all. When completely off it generates no heat. When in "Normal" it is about 50 watts - same heat as an average light bulb. When fully operational it is about 350 watts (if I remember correctly) - That is basically 6 light bulbs packed tightly together (that would be a lot of heat). There are not uncommon values for a large flat screen. Woobieizer 07-27-07, 01:46 AM This thing (TX-47) seems to give off quite a bit of heat. Its a personal comfort in the house .. Its a large room that noticeably warmer .. Its at the point where we end up running the A/C during the day (granted its been pretty warm in So. I took some liberty with the quote, but it is to show my path of logic in troubleshooting, and to apologize jumping the gun. If your HDTV screen flickers on & off, connect your Playstation3 (or whichever HDMI device) to the TV using an HDMI-to-DVI cable, rather than HDMI-to-HDMI. This Westinghouse display does support HDCP through DVI, so digitally encrypted video such as Blu-Ray movies should play at full 1080p through DVI. ...What we're trying to do with the adapters is somehow fool the hdcp into working correctly and not dropping out. Since there is no DVI port on this TV, this is the only way to try it. I thought the dvi cable or adapter would kill the audio stream, which may stop the flicker.. ..all the DVI to HDMI would do is remove the digital audio connection... I am asking because of the connector stacking idea posted Post 1977 sapaws Cable fix (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=11131831&&#post11131831) Ok just got off the phone with westy. The guy i talk to was really nice,i explained the audio problem with the tv....he told me to take it back to BB cause my tv had something wrong with sound board.. Since using the stacked connection strips the Digital Audio, it was a moot point to test DD5.1 yet by hope of my ignorance and suggestion, kenpachi tested his set again, and was motivated by its failure to call Westinghouse and get his answer. There was a little silver in the lining of this cloud for him. I apologize to the forum for not doing my research on the DVI to HDMI specs. Thanks and keep up the posts. pauldarkjr 07-27-07, 08:29 AM Well its official, I am finally fed up! I am now on my 3rd set. This one not only has the flickering issue but also has some seriously bad vertical banding on the right side. It looks like the TV is broken up into 3 boxes one that is very dark that takes up 2/3's of the screen, and then 2 more of equal size that get progressivly lighter and it has 4 stuck pixles. I know 4 stuck pixles isn't a lot but I am starting to get very frustrated. And to top it all off, the store that I bought it (REX) said I can't get the same set again if I return it. I will need to pick something else. Or I need to send it to westinghouse. AGRHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! I feel like fu*king killing somebody. x84HurstOlds 07-27-07, 09:03 AM Well, I'm more concerned about getting through the summer :) I'm not particularly concerned about the hardware.. as I said, I'm guessing this is relatively normal. I mean, I guess it gets warm, but I'm in a moderate-size living room in a fairly small house and I don't notice it heating the place up too much. If you are home during the day...and its "fairly warm"....I mean, wouldn't you be running the A/C anyway? Not to be a smartass, but it *is* July. :) Or you would have the windows open, I would think a good breeze would dissipate any heat generated by the TX. Ed x84HurstOlds 07-27-07, 09:08 AM Does anyone know the main difference between the Westy LVM model and the Westy TS model? Which one do you guys prefer? There was pretty extensive discussion of this early on in the thread, along with exhaustive lists of differences. Further testing reveals that the TX line has a slightly whacked gamma curve that wasn't known then. But better viewing angles, more HDMI inputs, and a tuner. Sorry, don't know page numbers, but I'd guess it was in the first 10 or 20 pages. I've read them all. Suffer with me :D Ed huggybear 07-27-07, 09:23 AM No, I'm thinking they may be in the DEEP South. Mines actually set rather high.. Its at 70 currently under the "Movie" setting. I *had* been doing a User Config and dropping it down to 0-20 .. but I found that a) It kept resetting to default .. possibly an issue with a stray remote command from the Universal making it think I was saying to reset ... b) I'm not sure, but I think it was making my eyes strain a bit to read the text .. just wasn't feeling too well reading stuff .. the brighter screen .. though not perfect with SD-quality signals and their coloring .. seems to be an "easier" picture to see. To the smartass comment.. Well.. I was writing that last message at 11:30pm or so .. and it was still 79degrees in the room .. While I might run the A/C to cool down the house a bit during the day .. if there wasn't a source continually warming it up then I wouldn't have to *keep* running it. Follow? :) I am wondering if we're on to something with the backlight though .. Can anyone else approach this from a technical point of what causes the most heat to be generated? Thanks a bunch folks .. -MirclMax Lutch 07-27-07, 09:56 AM I'm a bit curious if everyone is having the DD5.1 issue with their PS3? Because I have no issue with the PS3 HDMI passing the 5.1 to the TV and the TV passing the signal to the receiver via the optical output. I did have to reset which standards the PS3 would pass through the HDMI after I updated the firmware. I have mine set to bitstream and had to use the manual option for which standards the PS3 would pass through the HDMI. I just selected the boxes for DTS5.1 & DD5.1 and I was good to go. If I used the automatic setting it does not pass 5.1 at all. Woobieizer 07-27-07, 10:05 AM Quick question: In what continent or country is Westinghouse's customer support located? Thanks a bunch folks .. -MirclMax MM, thanks for responding.. About 2 weekends ago I shot a video, thinking I would post it, of my TX running 60fps of OTS Lab and Milkdrop. This heated things up pretty well on the TV not to mention the PC. But anyhow, I was measuring the temp on top of the Westy, and measured it at 97 degrees. Directly above the TV is an "Atomix" radio calibrated clock w/date-temp-time; it measured 84 degrees at the time the other gauge measured 97. After aiming the Honeywell at it the heat dissipated by 7~9 degree respectively within 12 minutes. Little background. My set is under a ceiling fan, and an air duct, on a table, off the wall about 18". I keep my cave's air set to 78~80 depending on the humidity outdoors. In the south it gets kinda sticky. Concerning the inline air booster, from what I remember it would only increase the CFM's on the line you install it on, decreasing the CFM's from other locations not necessarily used. Overall, I am really happy with my purchase. The deal was great, and I'm hoping it lasts me at least 5 years. Anything after that is gravy. Skintones are perfectly natural with the proper balance of settings. Try these: Brightness - 48 Contrast - 74 (trust me) Color - 54 Tint - 50 (worthless control) Sharpness - your preference, recommend 25-40 for SD cable Backlight - your preference, recommend 0-10 for dim room, 20-30 for bright room Color Temperature - WARM, if you take one piece of advice it should be this one. :) This is my 480i/SD calibration. You'll want the deinterlace and comb filters both on in the advanced calibration menu, and keep in mind these numbers are for the dynamic contrast setting OFF. I recommend leaving it off for everything, including SD cable. It destroys midtone contrast details and makes the picture look edgy and over highlighted. Natural looking skintones are what has impressed me the most about this tv. Occasionally I will see hints of yellow-green on the sides of faces in SD cable content only, but not with any other type of content. It was more prominent when the settings were closer to default. This is largely the fault of the broadcast medium and I only see it on certain channels whose video levels seem wonky to begin with. I find that the picture, colors in particular and fleshtones, look unnatural when the backlight is over 20 regardless of brightness in the room. The picture is simply too bright. Overall screen brightness is an important part of picture calibration and this sense seems to have been lost with LCD and their psychotically bright screens. I tried out the PC input and just about recoiled as if something had been thrown at me when I was hit with the brightness of the desktop (room lights were off). arggie 07-27-07, 12:16 PM One support guy I spoke with told me he was in upstate New York. I've had my set for a little over a month. Build date April 13th (?) with the first firmware number. I love this set so much, it's been nothing but a joy, but on the last day of Best Buy extended service plan eligibility, I bought the four year plan. I have three other LCD-HDTVs, two 19" Magnavoxs and a 32" Samsung without extended plans but after reading all your posts thought $200 bucks insurance for my Westy was not a bad deal. lordofthenazgul 07-27-07, 12:43 PM I've had the TX-42" for 3 weeks now, and the only annoying thing I've encountered is the flashing and flickering when switching channels broadcast in different resolutions (e.g. 480p to 1080i). I chalked this up to the communication between the PACE551 HD STB and the Westy running through an HDMI cable (from Belkin). Otherwise, the programs display the way they're supposed to....the 480p shows are decent, if not clearer than a regular CRT. The shows on channels like HDNET and HDNAT that are actually broadcast in HD are STUNNING, especially at this price range. Gaming: I have the regular Xbox 360 and a Wii. I have the cheap-ass Asid VGA cable and (thanks to certain posters) now have audio!! I would recommend anyone who is running through the component cables to get the VGA cables....the colours are sharper and they "pop". Sometimes it's so damn bright I have to lower the backlight setting a bit. I don't have a decent A/V Receiver yet, so I can't comment on the optical audio capabilities of the cables. Regarding the Wii, it's running through Madcatz component cables and I think that's about as good as it's going to get as far as picture. The Wii was never about stellar graphics anyway, and I'm not expecting next-gen HD graphics from this machine. It's just damn fun to play Boxing on the Westy.... :) I concur with the others who say, use the "Fill" option, not a noticeable loss in picture quality anyway. Movies: I picked up the Xbox 360 HD-DVD add-on and with the VGA cables mentioned above...this thing is completely worth it. As I said, I don't have anything that accepts Optical audio input, so I can't comment on the audio. I've watched the requisite HD movies on it so far (Batman Begins, Riddick, etc...) and the details were as expected. With "Riddick", the visuals were just stunning! As far as up-converting, I watched both "Return of the King" and "Revenge of the Sith", as well as some "stuff" burnt on DVD-Rs. Noticeable difference, obviously, but the up-conversion was as advertised. Crisper, better colours, etc. etc. All-in-all, pleasantly satisfied. This is my first journey into HD, and the fact that everything appears to be working in relative harmony, delivering what each unit advertises, makes the whole experience worthwhile. And if not, BB threw in the 4-year warranty for the price of the 2...... Now if I can just find a good deal on a nice Receiver..... I got a new dvi to hdmi cable in the mail for a second PC. But the second PC will not do 1080p on the Westinghouse 47, TV tells me no signal. But the same TV will flip to the HDMI input when you plug the computer in, and still say there's no signal. It will display a picture in 1080i with a little futzing around, but will not do 1080p under my ATI 9800 Pro Radeon card. I took a look in the Samsung thread and it seems Samsung replaced a board in the TVs and apparently people are no longer having the flicker/dropouts. So, question is whether Westy will just sit on their @ss or hopefully do something about it. If the ps3 is working w/o issue on most other tv's BUT the Westy models, then it's probably a Westy issue.. I urge anyone and everyone experiencing the HDMI flickering/dropouts to call up Westy!! Ended up paying 800+ after using some gift cards. Anyway, I have an xbox elite and was wondering if anyone has their "best" video settings via hdmi. I'm not very good at this kinda stuff, but I wanna compare my settings with anyone else's. I was lookin through a lot of pages, but couldn't find a setting that matched my needs. I thought I had read in an early post or discussion that you couldn't do 1080 over VGA, not true? Mine accepted 1920x1080p resolution (i.e. 60Hz) when I had it hooked up through VGA. I'm pretty sure it could accept even higher rates such as 72Hz but it may have lost sync at 75Hz (or slightly higher). I have since switched to using HDMI through a DVI-to-HDMI cable. Getting the TV to display 1920x1080@60Hz using my X850 card (in HDMI) was a real pain. In the end I had to run dual-screen using a 15in LCD as primary display and then playing around changing resolutions and timings on the secondary display (i.e. TV) using Powerstrip. I am not sure what change caused the TV to finally sync correctly but I have since disabled Powerstrip and can now use the TV as the primary display at all resolutions without the "No input signal" issues. I never experienced the other ATI issue many described in which they saw an image but it had black borders on all sides or was shifted over. Mine just wouldn't display when set to resolutions higher than 1280x1024. This was really annoying as installing updated ATI drivers auto-detected that the TV supported 1920x1080 and would try using it resulting in a blank screen and no way to change the settings lower. I can not count the times I have been to WalMart at around this time looking at Wii-Xbox-PS3, head down, kicking a piece of trash in the asile thinking hummmm maybe I should...nahHH I have enough toys already. This is a massive thread, so I'm going to try and get to it by asking some questions. How does the Westy TX-42F430S operate, how is its PQ? What are some major recurrinng problems, if any? I ask because I might pick it up today from BB and us a 10% coupon I have. Currently, I own the Vizio vu42lf - I like it, but it did cost more and it has some problems I'm not liking (backlight bleeding, pixelation, etc.) Would this Westinghouse be a wise move? I watch local HD, play the 360 w/ componenet, and have a 1080p upconverting DVD. Let me know what you think, any opinions/feedback would be great. Thanks in advance. Good Hunting Geetar 07-29-07, 09:25 AM Yea, just reading over this thread it seems like the westy has some locking up/freezing issues, as well as some backlight bleeding issues. I think I'll hang on to the Vizio - if not just for the extremely liberal return policy at Costco (90 days). If the westy craps anytime over a month, I can't do anything about with Best Buy. Its a couple hundred cheaper, but oh well. Joony 07-29-07, 11:22 AM Best Buy has the TX-42 at a cheaper price than the last sale two weeks ago. The 10% off movers coupon expires on 7/31, so make haste! Yea I saw that, but all the problems with TV according to this thread makes me not want to get it and keep the Vizio I have. Plus, BBY's return policy is only 30 days, where Costco's is 90 - and Costco gives you a two year warranty w/o purchasing any service plan. So, if I bought the service plan for the Westy (which I would almost need to based on the freezing problems, etc.) the cost would be greater than Costco's Vizio. roaf85 07-29-07, 01:12 PM Best Buy has the TX-42 at a cheaper price than the last sale two weeks ago. Thanks so much for the coupon. I just got home from Bestbuy. The sales person there tried to say since the TV was on sale that the code would not work. I told him bullshit it says nothing in the exclusions and that I would not believe him until I saw the check-out screen where it said the coupon was not valid. He goes and talks to a manager and the manager said that his assoicate thought it was a reward zone coupon that does not take into account the sale price. I got the TV for 989.09 plus tax. Total was $1059. I did not get the Service Plan for $150 dollars more. I know I have 30 days to do it. I was wondering if it would be worth it. I only plan to keep this TV for 2 years as the main TV and then it will move to the bedroom of my new place. Bengalfang 07-29-07, 06:36 PM A bit of a change of pace.... I am pretty sure I am getting this the 47" Westy after reading the entire thread and posting once. Todd kolyan2k 07-29-07, 07:29 PM i wonder if anyone has compared Westy TX-F430S, which i believe has Trident video processing, to Olevia 747i which has Reon HVQ, which is considered to be the best on the market right now. DaddyLongLegs 07-29-07, 07:49 PM The only thing keeping me from jumping to HDTV is I do a lot of standard def/interlaced stuff still, such as older video game systems, some VHS, and non high def programming. I'm curious to see if TVs made after april 13th will have these problems, or if the TX52 will have these issues as well. Any other issues missing? Alright, so this morning, the first known issue manifested itself for me (tv build date is june 26 2007 with firmware 5112_1.3.0). I've been running energy saver mode for about a week now and when i turned on the set, the amber light went on but nothing happened. pressed the power button on the remote a couple of times after waiting some odd minutes and no response. so i did a 10 sec tv power reboot, and the westinghouse logo appeared. i'm still keeping an eye out for other issues. this is strike 1 for me and if 2 more minor problems or just the flicker problem, rear it's ugly head, i'm afraid i will be exchanging this for another set :( i just hope that the problems happen before my 30 days are up. really crossing my fingers for either westinghouse releasing a firmware usable by consumers or just them acknowledging the fact that there are semi-serious/serious problems with their sets to save a good amount of us the trouble of purchasing their tv until things get sorted out. i'm all for affordable sets, but when quality is compromised i'd gladly pay the extra hundred of dollars for a quality/reliable one (even though both, more so reliability, seem to be at the bottom of the list for all companies, even the top tier ones unfortunately... just my opinion). xnappo 07-30-07, 08:56 AM Alright, so this morning, the first known issue manifested itself for me (tv build date is june 26 2007 with firmware 5112_1.3.0). I don't think this happens to most people though. xnappo tokiidokii 07-30-07, 09:16 AM Wow - I guess your post yesterday cursed you! Did you forget to knock on wood? I noticed about 4 or 5 flashing green pixels on the tv, which would indicate dying pixels on the lcd screen. I thought "oh no" and continued to play. They were noticeable in dark areas. I switched over to my cable box and PS3, and the pixels were fine. I looked around for a channel with a dark screen and nothing was wrong. If it was the panel, it should have been seen in the other inputs. Maybe its my VGA cable? Either way, I'll have to check again tonight. Seeing that made me realize again that I would take a fixable lockup or flicker anyday over stuck or flashing pixels. huggybear 07-30-07, 10:22 AM lol! i did knock on 'particle board' (love ikea!)... does that count :p!?! i'm keeping it on e-saver right now since i assumed that if it's a reset of memory or corruption of firmware or some other thing, that the problem could possibility exhibit itself also in normal mode. but thanks for confirming what i was assuming My first TX-47 died on me while using e.saver mode (same symptoms you described except the reboot would not fix it). SPEC. REQ: Sony firmware revision: Sony Model #: HDMI cable Make-Model: Which Port on Westy: Which Model Westy: Firmware Westy: Woobieizer - I am on my 2nd TX-47 and neither of them have had any problems with HDMI and the PS3. Both units were built on Apr 13 with the 5110_1.1.0 firmware. Actually, I don't think there are any TX-47 owners out there with a different build date or firmware (someone please speak up if your system info shows something different). As for my PS3, I am currently using the latest firmware but I have actually used the last 3 revisions and never had a problem. I am using HDMI input #1. I personally don't think it has anything to do with the Westy (if they all have the same build date and firmware, what could possibly differ hardware-wise from a set that exhibits the flickering problem with one that doesn't) ?? My guess is that it has something to do with the PS3 and/or cable. I am using a Cables To Go Velocity HDMI cable from Tiger Direct: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2943607&CatId=1638#detailspecs I've noticed a couple of things that differ between HDMI cables... I don't know if these things would matter at all but I'll throw them out for discussion (someone more knowledgeable on HDMI please chime in): 1) dual-link or single-link (can't say what my cable is as it isn't listed) 2) AWG (again, mine isn't listed but I have seen 24 and 28AWG) 3) gold-plated connector (mine is 24 karat gold-plated) 4) shielded (mine is fully shielded) So if I had to make an educated guess, maybe the flickering problem is caused by the HDMI cable losing the signal for a split second which causes a problem with the HDCP negotiations and hence the flickering while it is re-established ? armenhamer 07-30-07, 10:56 AM Whatever happened to the days where you could just turn a tv off? Now theres a "normal mode" and a "e save mode". I've got the 42" and yeah knock on wood, so far so good. For the first week I left it on normal mode and then noticed that the back of the unit was warm. That seems silly to me if your not using it it should not be drawing any power. So I switched to E Saver mode and now it's not warm at all! Have had it set that way since Saturday we'll see how that goes. Honestly I wouldn't mind leaving it in normal mode, it just seems like with anything you get more life out of it if it's not always being used. jterp7 07-30-07, 11:18 AM is this happening more on 47's than 42's? talking about the e.saver issue..I bought mine on the 15th...and changed to esaver mode probably a few days into using it tokiidokii 07-30-07, 11:40 AM is this happening more on 47's than 42's? talking about the e.saver issue..I bought mine on the 15th...and changed to esaver mode probably a few days into using it not really sure about the frequency of this anomaly occuring in certain sets, but i have a 42 and this is the first time this happened to me (after about a week of using e.saver mode). huggy has a 47 and he did state that his first set had the same symptoms i've experienced before his set died shortly while after (really don't know how long huggy had it in e.saver mode btw). now this doesn't mean that this bug is the sole cause that killed his tv but just be aware that it did happen so just be prepared for things :) . i mean it might not even happen to you but who knows. xnappo 07-30-07, 11:45 AM not really sure about the frequency of this anomaly occuring in certain sets, but i have a 42 and this is the first time this happened to me (after about a week of using e.saver mode). huggy has a 47 and he did state that his first set had the same symptoms i've experienced before his set died shortly while after (really don't know how long huggy had it in e.saver mode btw). now this doesn't mean that this bug is the sole cause that killed his tv but just be aware that it did happen so just be prepared for things :) . i mean it might not even happen to you but who knows. I think it was just a glitch in the programing, not a TV thing. Geetar 07-30-07, 12:26 PM Okay. I've been considering this TV, but it sounds like it is a gamble. Lots of people talk about various problems with the TV (e.saver, freezing, lockups, HDMI inputs). Also, it seems like some of these issues do not become apparent for a few days/weeks. My thought is you've got 30 days and get the 4 year warranty. It's a good TV as long as it stays working right. Also I found this on HDGURU, which talks about second and third tier manufacture warranty's. Here's what they said about Westy. Westinghouse If the set is purchased from Best Buy it must be returned to the store for warranty service regardless of the size of the TV, according to the Westinghouse customer service department. If purchased elsewhere, Westinghouse customer service must be called to determine if the set is in need of factory service. Westinghouse will issue a return authorization if they determine factory services is needed and it will pay the freight both ways if the TV was purchased within the last 90 days. From 90 days to the end of the one-year warranty, the consumer must pay the return freight and supply the original packaging or a suitable equivalent. Westinghouse does not sell replacement cartons and packing. Out of warranty service is available locally in select markets according to its customer service department. If there is no local factory authorized servicer in your area, the set owner must pay the freight both ways and the cost or repair parts and labor, which will be determined after Westinghouse receives and examines the malfunctioning television. Your set, if it had come up would have been looking for signal on HDMI-1 (the PS3) correct?... yes i would assume that. i have my set to auto-recognize. however, what i did this morning (not sure if this is a cause... and i forgot to mention this) i turned on my pc and set it to have feed going to the tv. at this point my tv was still off but my comp is already feeding data to the tv. then i turned on my tv and nada... the so called 'e.saver lockup' struck me. i was confused at first, thinking my tv was warming up so i waited for a few mins til i finally decided to pick up the remote and power it down. didn't get a response after a couple of tries so i did a reboot using the set's power button. i then saw the westinghouse splash screen and it immediately recognized that there is feed coming from the pc. again, at this point it's hard to pinpoint what's going on but i want to try again by process of elimination if i can recreate what happened this morning. could be a fluke but doesn't hurt to try again... well there is a chance that i might outright kill my tv hehe. huggybear 07-30-07, 02:37 PM Okay. Geetar - that's just the nature of these forums - people report problems in an effort to determine if they are flaws in the set or problems with their individual setups, etc. You can go into a forum for any set on the market and you will read about problem after problem. A lot of the time it is user error, sometimes the individual posting just got a lemon set, and sometimes it is a genuine problem with the build or the entire line. You just have to pick the set that has the problems which you can live with. There simply isn't a better bang for your buck than the TX series. The Vizio is close but if you look at those forums you will discover a litany of problems. In my opinion there are more and they are worse. Plus, the TX is superior if you look at the specs. The first picture shows my settings under: SETTINGS - SOUND SETTINGS - AUDIO OUTPUT SETTINGS. I have HDMI selected next, then MANUAL selected next, then I have the Dolby Digital 5.1 ch. & DTS 5.1 Ch. boxes checked, the other PCM options are greyed out. The second picture just shows the end screen for the previous settings, it only shows a rundown of the settings. The third picture shows my settings under: SETTINGS - BD/DVD SETTINGS. Take note of the settings for the BD/DVD Audio Output Format (HDMI) I have it set to Bitstream. These settings allowed me to enjoy DD5.1 surround for games as well as DVD's. Not sure if everyone is aware, but games and DVD's don't always put the menu and opening screens in DD5.1, so the receiver will show only 2 channels and not the 5.1. The TV is set as 2nd display @ 1080. Initially, it was fine for a few minutes. Then it started to flicker. The image will shake briefly or the screen will black out. Got it home and all plugged in and it looks awesome! No mura (well i suppose a minor amount in the lower left corner, but its only a few inches) and no dead pixels. I don't have any HDMI plugged in right now unfortunately, my roomates ps3 has some power issue :( . BUT the DVD and PS2 look awesome over component. I have noticed odd issue however - when switching SD channels the screen jitters a split second when it locks in the new channel - the picture appears - moves forward 1/3 second - reverses then goes forward with audio. this behaviour doesn't happen with HD channels. Has anyone seen this behaviour with a 42 or 47, or any device before? Despite picking up my tv at the end of July it still has a build date of April 13, and firmware 5110_1.1.0 . Are there significant improvements with the newer build dates? Are any improvements added? Either way this is the best PQ screen i've seen, especially for this price point! Both SD and HD is awesome. -foomp Woobieizer 07-31-07, 06:36 AM I have noticed odd issue however - when switching SD channels the screen jitters a split second when it locks in the new channel - the picture appears - moves forward 1/3 second - reverses then goes forward with audio. this behaviour doesn't happen with HD channels. Brought it home and hooked it up and tested against PS3 1080P movie "Crank". Had watched it on my Sony Projection 46" 1080i just couple of days ago my buddy immediately saw a huge difference and we can't believe our eyes. Needles to say I was alittle skeptical when purchasing this TV and I've been on this forum reading the pros and cons of this TV. For the price and picture quality of his TV, I know I've made a right decisions. For those who are weary on the brand and price, give Westy a chance and you'll wont be disappointed. askjeffro 07-31-07, 08:00 AM Since the westy does a better than average job with SD and 480p content, i'm not sure you'll find a better lcd other than the olevias for SD content. I previously played on my fathers 37" Plasma and it looked great, I'm thinking the LCD is the culprit. I am using the component cables with the wii set to widescreen and 480P, the TV sees the signal as 480P. Image is is jagged, which I expected. But the textures are really blurry and there appears to be a slight ghosting. Is their a way via the TV or otherwise, to upscale the image similar to DVD upscaling prior to display, that is the only way I can think of that might actually make it look fair, at least at this point. Playing with the usual TV settings has proven fruitless. For whatever its worth, setting the Wii to NON-Widescreen actually makes the game look slightly better, (when setting the TV to standard) which I believe is just a result of stretching it out less. I don't have the TV hooked up to my PC right now otherwise I'd throw some pictures up to show you. I should thank people here for helping me to choose this TV, though I only had time to read through 1/3 of the posts. It's shown with the right name and automatically at 60Hz. I thought this might be a driver issue. I had CCC 6.5 and upgraded to 7.7. It turned out 7.7 did not work with this TV neither and it had problem with ATI Tool. So I am backing down to 6.11 (seem to be fine with ATI Tool). One problem is that video does not get played in the second display (TV). When I change CCC to do that, it's never get stretched horizontally, only vertically. Strange. However, this might be a driver issue. I guess I probably can upgrade the video card. A couple of questions. 1. Can audio for HDMI input 1 be controlled separately? Other HDMI has no RCA to use. This affects my decision on the choice of video card (DVI, RGB, VGA). 2. Anybody made headways regarding the 5.1 audio pass through? I've not checked TV system info yet. I have an old Amp with limited digital audio connection. Using TV as switcher will be ideal (one of the reason I chose this TV). 3. What kind of test programs are available (assuming I can get the PC to work and my DVI-HMDI cable will arrive soon)? 4. Is there any good calibration option? I think I have one DVD from 3M which claims does something. But I am a HD newbie and does not have much clue. 5. I've turned off backlight and yet I feel the black is not that dark and looks quite cloudy -- might be a source issues. But the word "mura" just get into my head. How could I tell? If you get a stable image at lower resolutions then it's being caused by signal degradation over VGA. Did you try re-performing the auto-adjust at the tv's end first? In my own tests I experienced ghosting around text as a slight double image to the lower right in exactly the same way Benzonate (sp?) reported originally. VGA really struggles at 1920x1080 because of the frequency and in some cases getting a clear picture is almost impossible even with a good cable. Mikeoz 07-31-07, 11:31 AM Have you tried outputting the Wii at 480i instead of 480p? Others in this thread have reported that the image actually looks better because the TV's de-interlacer is better than the Wii's. Why this occurs is VERY strange to me, and just to clarify, outputting 480i only looked better on select games, and the dashboard. For zelda, 480i looked worse. I'll explain why this doesn't make sense.. The Wii is basically a small computer, and computers compute full images = progressive. So, why some games (wii sports) look better at 480i rather than 480p makes me think that perhaps the programmers got lazy or there's a bug somewhere where the output for that game is not really determined by the dashboard setting. So, for Wii sports, the game outputs 480i, and the Wii console does the deinterlacing to 480p, which is not the way it should be. Zelda looks better at 480p (which it should, progresive has double the lines), which leads me to believe the game outputs 480p like it should, and there is no deinterlacing needed/done. So, I've decided to leave my Wii at 480p. The fact that some games look better at 480i means that A. There was a screw up somewhere in the code B. The Wii's deinterlacer isn't that good. C. The Westy's deinterlacer is better than the Wii's. That doesn't necessarily make the Westy's image processing good, but it seems to be pretty solid imo. For video games the output should be progressive by nature, and the fact that some games look better at 480i than 480p is not normal. askjeffro 07-31-07, 11:45 AM Mikeoz, Have you played Wii on another set? I think it looks pretty good. Then again, there arent many jagged lines or polygons in this game. http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a124/bhazard/DSC00983.jpg askjeffro 07-31-07, 12:13 PM That looks okay... Is the text blurry to you, or is that just the camera? Thanks for the picture by the way. Okay, I need someone that is far more TV technical then I am; I found this VGA box that might fix my problem. I really am not sure if it would just be more of the same or not: http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-de-49-en-70-245o.html That box wont upconvert the Wii to 1080p. You'll need a high end audio receiver to do that. I will say though, that VGA on this TV does display a nicer, clearer (less blurry) picture with less ghosting (little to none) than component. This may work for you. mrstumpy82 07-31-07, 12:38 PM Did you auto-scan for channels? Who is your Cable provider? I know of one instance that I believe Cox (not sure) caused memory overflows due to too many digital sub-channels (even over analog) which killed a Philips TV a few times until a tech found the problem. I did do the autoscan for channels. With my first exchange, the TV actually froze with the same symptoms I described with the problems I'm having with the current unit. My cable provider is a local company named BELD. Next, I'm gonna try using the TV with a cable box and see if that remedies any of this. Thanks. jterp7 07-31-07, 12:55 PM Does the Wii look anything like this for you? I think it looks pretty good. I have had the vizio for about a month and have been very happy with it but the price of the westy was too good to pass up. With tuning over QAM, my initial impression is that the SD content is better on the vizio. There is a considerable amount more of noise and artifacting on the SD of the westy. The local HD channels look great on both. I haven't had time to read all through this thread, but some of it. Last night when i was watching CSI, 3 times the tv flickered out and then switched over to my computer display that was hooked up. I've read about this autosourcing thing but has anyone had anything similar happen? I had to press the "tv" button on the remote and it went back fine but it was strange it happened 3 times. I have the older LVM-37w3 but it also has autosource. I never used to have a problem, until I got a new DVD Recorder. After I got that, it started auto-detecting the recorder doing something and would switch the source. To a certain extent I don't think its Westinghouse's fault - it appears to be something that the individual source does that triggers it. I just turn autosource off. roaf85 07-31-07, 01:43 PM roaf85, use the 10% movers coupon to sweeten the deal! Quick! It is well worth it. If you had to actually ship the TV for repair, it would cost $150 alone. Yeah I agree, although my TV was replaced during the initial 30 return period, I felt that there have been enough issues with these TV's (HD TV's overall) that a mere $150 that would guarantee I would get a replacement for 4 years was well worth it. The other mitigating issue was that if the TV needed to be sent back to Westinghouse for repair it is on my dime, even during the warranty period I believe. With the extended warranty it is not an issue BB either fixes the TV, replaces it with a new one or after so many issues they offer to replace it with a matching spec unit. So in most instances I would NOT get an extended warranty, but I figured it's a safe bet in this circumstance. foomp 07-31-07, 02:23 PM Hi, I am now a proud member of the 42" TX club. I'm with bhazard - my guess is that the set's firmware does not agree with something in your cable company's QAM stream. A cable box will certainly alleviate the problem as the box will be doing the decoding and merely passing the video and audio to your set. You can also hook up an antenna to the set's RF input to pick up OTA channels in your area. bhazard 07-31-07, 02:42 PM Eh true, but if this set is so unrelible then why not spend the extra money for the phillps? I had a set die from lockups, and I went with normal mode for a while, then I said to myself, "Self...what the f**k are you thinking?" ;) I refuse to NOT use E. Saver mode. I'm NOT going to burn 40 watts with the TV off (out of concern for both the environment and my electric bills - LCD is supposed to use LESS electricity, right?) and I'm NOT going to accept that being broken. I have the PSP, so if it dies, it dies - has some mura anyway. I have had "matrix screen" issues on sudden power loss, but it didn't seem to matter whether it was in E. Saver or normal mode. Saver works on my tv. Isnt the W logo supposed to show every time you turn the TV on with it on? cheerful 07-31-07, 09:08 PM This was a painful. After over 30 reboots trying different drivers and settings, I've finally settled with the CCC 6.5. No other versions work properly -- mostly flickers but sometimes aspect ratio was wrong no matter how I force it. With CCC 6.5, aspect ratio is right. However, I can't run full-screen video on second display. If I try, the flicker will start. The only way to fix is to uninstall and then reinstall. The good news is that it's working at 1920x1080 @ 75Hz. Now I can start to test it. My TV was built on Jun 26, 2007, software version 5112_1.3.0 Not sure this is a new firmware. I've observed no dead pixels. I am using http://tft.vanity.dk/ to look for various things but I am not that experience. Turned of dynamic contrast and backlight. Did not see much problem in terms of banding. There is some clouding but kind of all over the place -- maybe that's the lack of dark deep black. So far so good. Geetar 07-31-07, 09:35 PM Oh my god. I changed the channels on the display set and definately noticed some major flickering. The HD feed looked great, but once I changed the channels (and saw some SD) it all went to hell. Each channel seemed like it had to find its picture or something, the screen went darker then brighter, etc. Just reading all the people that have gone through several of these sets and those that are debating on returning it within their 30 days certainly allows me to be comfortable with passing on this deal. Heck, I might try the insignia 720p for around 700-800. Is the westy being replaced by a different model, does anyone know? flabioh 07-31-07, 09:40 PM Oh my god. I'm sorry your experience with the TV was not what you were expecting (although it seems your only complaint is that it takes time to switch channels). I am one of the MANY people in this thread that are perfectly happy with their sets. It would take a Wii controller thrown into the set for me to take it back. :) This is the newest Westy Model and isn't going to be replaced anytime soon. Good luck with the Insignia 720p... it won't be able to hold a candle to this TV. cheerful 07-31-07, 09:45 PM The SD scaling look very decent. I've chosen to surf digital channels only. However, when it boots up, it will go to Channel 2, which I believe is analog (a lot of statics). How could I set it to, say 2.1? The antenna can pull in 13 channels. However, I am quite confused with EPG. The manual stated You have the option of looking at: • “Present EPG”—includes current channel, program name and description, along with programming titles, start and end times for all available minor channels from the same broadcaster • “Daily EPG”—includes current programming name and description, plus upcoming programming titles with start and end times The EPG also provides: • Date and time information • Power use and signal quality I seems to only have one view, which is different from the manual. It's channel listing at the top as tabs. I can only choose one tab at a time, which means viewing listing for one channel at a time. There is no present EPG view -- I would think it's like the TV Guide channel view. In addition, it does not have much event listing. Only the channel I am viewing is available. Go to different channel tab show empty events. Is this function not available over tha air? Or am I missing something here? Thanks! How does your SD look? I need to hear something from someone that hasn't had problems, because really, there are A LOT of posts indicating problems. oh i didn't see this post. well i guess i can say i haven't had any major problems at all. no flickering etc. the only problem i had was those 2 lock ups with e.saver. but it might have been some kind of fluke. i was going to experiment with stuff to see if i could possibly reproduce the lock ups but no win for me. anyway, i am very happy with the tv :D also, remember these sets are about 2-3 months old. so do expect the early production to have some bugs. although seriously, companies need to tighten up on QC anyway. it's not fair that the consumers need to do their bug/glitch research for them hehe sweh 07-31-07, 10:08 PM I'm a relative newbie when it comes to configuring TVs. Heck, until Jul 3rd I was still using a good ol' 27" CRT. That's when I got my 42F430S. Immediately it showed up deficiencies in my DVD player so I got an Oppo 970HD. Today I got my Digital Video Essentials DVD and played with this. The Oppo is set to output in 1080i, connected to HDMI1. (I didn't see any real difference if using 720p). Since this is an SD source being upconverted I'm not sure just how useful the "sharpness" test is. Two things showed up strongly. Firstly the black level value isn't consistent. Setting black on a low intensity PLUGE image and then switching to a high intensity image shows that black changes level. This definitely showed up in some of the "flashing" test screens later in the disk; the black level bars would fade in and out as the picture intensity changes. The second is that "green" appears to be distorted (blue and red look just fine through the filters, but green is definitely off). With the temperature set to "warm" the green was _less_ bad, but it was still wrong. However, to my eye, the picture looks better when the temperature is set to neutral. I'm probably wrong, but then this is subjective to a degree :-) So... I set contrast and brightness using the SMTPE image then set the saturation/hue from their modified colour test pattern. This actually resulted in higher contrast, lower brightness settings than if I tried to set it from the PLUGE itself and a lower backlight because the overall image picture appeared brighter. Results: Brightness=47 Contrast=80 Saturation=58 Hue=55 Sharpness=18 Backlight=30 Other issue... I can't seem to get 5.1 audio out of it. First I tried connecting the DVD player (via HDMI) to the TV and then optical from the TV to my Technics receiver. Whilst there appeared to be surround sound, it wasn't being registered as 5.1 on the receiver. A direct connection from the player to the receiver showed proper 5.1 audio. Similarly, ATSC broadcasts didn't register as 5.1 on the receiver, even though the surround speakers were active. I'm not sure where the issue is there. For OTA I also see "data" in the top line on some channels. Not sure if this is the receiver not processing the HD signal properly, or the broadcaster sending out of spec. Didn't spot anything conclusive in this thread, either way. And, of course, the purple line, which can be defeated by interlace setting _or_ by switching aspect ratios around (the line appears sometimes when the channel summary box appears; switching aspect ratios through fill/overscan/normal gets rid of it). In all other respects the unit appears to work fine; no power up issues, no broken pixels. All in all I'm happy with this TV. May still need to do more fine tuning of the picture. But so far so good. sweh 07-31-07, 10:20 PM Oh I meant to add something about viewing angle. It's actually quite impressive... if you are exactly in line in the X or Y axis. So with your head at TV level you can move quite a long way from side to side. Similarly with your head at the middle you can go up and down. BUT... it's pretty bad if you go off-axis. If you stand up to walk into the kitchen to get a beer then as you walk past the picture washes out pretty quickly because you go off-axis in both directions. This isn't a problem for those sitting down, so it's a minor issue for me. disbthai 07-31-07, 10:21 PM Anyone else having problems with heat coming from the TV? It seems to draw alot of heat. Woobieizer 08-01-07, 05:31 AM certainly a great news for those people who has the flickering problem. they can try this as see if it fixes it for them. i guess for me, i can thank my slight OCD problem since i just had to have my ps3 hooked up to HDMI 1 from the very beginning lol and one more thing... 300 on blu-ray... rocks! lol oh quick edit. i went to that techspeak and i said something about the e.saver lock up and flickering problems i've read here on avsforum. i then asked if they will provide a firmware in the near future for consumers to install themselves. here's the reply i got tonight... probably a generic one but i dunno, might be amusing to some of you :p Thank you for your inquiry. This form will have blanks for the user to enter their Name, Model, Firmware Version, Serial Number, Date Purchased, Place of Purchase, Type of Warranty, and the list of our combined user confirmed list of issues. This will become another means of contacting Westinghouse (via snailmail) to voice ourselves. Hopefully, there will be a Consumer Group testing the product family to help isolate/confirm what we have already found. This is our 1st HDTV of any kind. The black levels leave quite bit to be desired and have had lots of issues with audio sync from TWC HDTV via a Scientific Atlanta HD8300 set top box via HDMI. Often the audio is ahead of the video or we get ridiculous amounts of audio drop outs. this can usually be fixed by switching to a live SD channel for a few seconds and seems to occur more often when playing back material from the DVR. Is this what people are describing as "studdering"? I have not been using the power save mode. Have also had a few instances where the middle of the screen, the 4:3 are will go black and sometimes freeze this way. The areas on either side of the 4:3 area are still visible and the audio is still present unless it freezes. This is also repaired by switching channels briefly. I think that this is most likely a cable STB issue but can't be sure as the box was aquired when we got the TV. Over have been very pleased with SD on this display except on the channels that are still set out analog from the cableco and are worse when it is a widescreen program that is zoomed to overscan to fill the screen by the TV. Mainly noise issues which is to be expected with analog cable and zooming I guess. Anyway, what I started this post about was to let everyone know that I spoke with Robert Heron at PCMag/DLTV Tues and he has the TX-47 in the lab right now and has a review to be posted soon. Please wait for his complete, official review. This a great, very informative review. Lets keep the info flowing. I am also for the user issue form idea and passing the data along to Westinghouse to persuade them to address the issue that we have all discovered. Mike flabioh 08-01-07, 06:41 AM No, I'm sure the Insignia doesn't compare at all. I am curious if anyone has experience with them. So, do you have any problems with your set at all? Flickering, lockups, freezing? How does your SD look? I need to hear something from someone that hasn't had problems, because really, there are A LOT of posts indicating problems. The only problem I have with my set is a slight light leakage on the left side of the panel which I can only see at night in really dark scenes (unless I turn the backlight up to 100). Other than that I am seriously 100% satisfied with the TV. I have owned the TV for well over a month and have never had the TV lockup. I have never had any flickering but I also do not own and HDMI devices. The SD looks okay. Initially it was a shock going from a 20" CRT to this but I try and avoid SD material like the plague anyway. My kids can't tell the difference yet anyway and they watch the most SD material in the house. 95% of my usage of the TV is used with an HTPC and going from a 20" CRT using a blurry 1024x768 s-video image to a 42" widescreen 1920x1080 image using VGA is a mind blowing leap in quality. All this at a fraction of the price that all the other suckers are paying for their TVs and I'm one happy dude. Woobieizer 08-01-07, 06:49 AM Hello all, Been reading this thread for a while now. Keep this in mind. An HDTV "Mean Replacement Time Period", may be longer than an instance of complacent satisfaction. Lutch 08-01-07, 08:17 AM I have the Mura & Flashlight issues as well. I have some flashlights in the upper left corner and lower left and it is enough for me to almost want to take the unit back, but after watching a movie last night I've noticed something, the flashlights were practically gone by the end of the movie! They are REALLY noticeable at startup, but not so much after some use. I've noticed a dropout of the sound at startup as well, I think this is an issue of the order in which the units are turned on. I have to do some testing first and post it here. I'm also getting popping in the speakers when changing channels from Analog to Analog and from Digital to Analog. This just started up recently. It's strange, but I think I can live with it, since I LOVE this TV and for under $1K I love it more :) . cheerful 08-01-07, 08:38 AM Heres Whats NEW This is a work in progress.... EPG channel guide.. question The issue Post 2223 cheerful (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=11180579&&#post11180579) EPG (Electronic Program Guide) Lists all station you have scanned, minus thoes you have check off to ignore, but will only display "Guide info" on the current station being viewed 'within digital broadcasting family'. Please Confirm your OTA EPG Thanks for putting them together. Do you mean this the right behavior and there is only one view? Maybe I am just confused by the manual. I also have problem with one HDMI port: no audio and 480p only (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=11181127&&#post11181127) cheerful 08-01-07, 09:20 AM Now I think I have a real problem. I am using the new Philips 5982 and test out HDMI inputs. All of them work fine except HDMI 2. There is no audio and I can't change it from 480p. I wonder if this can be fixed somehow without replacing it. Has anyone seen similar problem? Tried various upconverting from this player. The upscaling of the TV looks pretty good. Now I am wondering if I really need the upconverting player. Talked to Westy support. They told me this might be a wiring problem and I might have to replace it. I am a bit worried the replacement might have other flaws. I don't really need 4 HDMI ports right now and I have the 4 year PSP from BB. Is it better for me just to leave it for now and contact BB PSP when I need it? mrstumpy82 08-01-07, 09:45 AM I'm with bhazard - my guess is that the set's firmware does not agree with something in your cable company's QAM stream. A cable box will certainly alleviate the problem as the box will be doing the decoding and merely passing the video and audio to your set. You can also hook up an antenna to the set's RF input to pick up OTA channels in your area. Ok....I'm done dealing with Westinghouse....So plugged the cale box into the TV hoping it would remedy the problems I've been having...well guess what it hasn't...the cable box was hooked up to the TV with component cables, i believe that's what they're called (there's a total of 5 wires, 2 for sound and 3 for audio)....well about 20 minutes into watching an HD channel, I was unable to use the remote or any of the buttons on the side of the TV...How can this be???? I thought TV's are ready to go right out of the box without needing the consumer having to deal with issues like these. The TV is over $1000 and you'd expect to get some quality with it...this was the second replacement!!! So I've gotten 3 TV's with problems. Not sure if it's a compatibility issue with the cable provider but should that even be an issue. Well I'm fed up and decided to go with a different TV set even if that means paying several hundred more. Thanks for the help guys and hope everyone has better luck with their TVs. Lutch 08-01-07, 09:45 AM Talked to Westy support. They told me this might be a wiring problem and I might have to replace it. I am a bit worried the replacement might have other flaws. I don't really need 4 HDMI ports right now and I have the 4 year PSP from BB. Is it better for me just to leave it for now and contact BB PSP when I need it? This is kind of the thinking I've been using for now. The minor issues that I can live with now that I may not be able to live with later can be used as a warranty issue later to get the unit replaced or repaired. Now will I want to do that later? That all depends upon the issuance of new firmware or build dates that aren't as problematic with newer units. If they start producing products with better QC later then I may call BB to repair the unit, hopefully they would have updated the issues by then. Kind of using the deficiencies that I can live with as an ace-in-the-hole for later. The manufacturer's that are thriving seem to be the ones that give out firmware updates and are constantly attempting to make the unit work with everything out there as it really should. We are in a new age of connectors, TV's, players, copyright protections etc. What used to be plug and play now needs to be updated constantly to be sure it runs correctly. Like Sony is doing with the PS3. There are so many new devices out there that are not simply hooked up via composit cables and it will work, they now need to "hand shake". kentondb 08-01-07, 10:08 AM No one has commented on satellite boxes.. Is anyone using a good HD Dish network or DirecTV receiver? jandar 08-01-07, 10:50 AM Im using a VIP211 with DishNetwork via HDMI. HD looks beautiful, same with local OTA HD, whether fed directly by antenna in the VIP211 or straight to the Westy. SD, Im still working on it. SD has blockiness & artifacts on it. It gets better when I lower the brightness and backlight. Same issue if I use component versus the HDMI. The TV itself is fine, as a standard 480p DVD looks great, same with the Wii. I am about to call dish customer service for input. Im hooking my laptop up tonight to test a few more things. HDTV & 480p look great, SD Dish looks cruddy, even at different resolutions in the HDTV setup menu in the VIP211. |
