View Full Version : ??Tvercity with new PS3 1.8 update??
joshmanley 05-24-07, 03:06 PM so i updated last night at about midnight and my PS3 automatically recognized my Tvercity that is running on my comp...all the folders are there and it opperates much faster than my DSM-520 media lounge...(SKREEEECH) but it says that there are no files in the folders for audio and all my videos, downloaded or ripped, are unsupported formats.
has anyone used the PS3 as a media server with this new update, if so what software are you using and what file types are you able to stream?
aldamon 05-24-07, 03:08 PM It doesn't work yet. You'll have to wait for an update.
joshmanley 05-24-07, 03:15 PM It doesn't work yet. You'll have to wait for an update.
a tvercity update or PS3?
yes,
Just use window media player 11 and hit "share". Then enable it to share video, audio, pictures and your set.
I'm not sure what video types are supported yet, most of mine were not supported as well.
Slacker George 05-24-07, 03:21 PM I think he means TVersity. I have the same problem trying to use it but I haven't had a chance to mess around with the settings though.
joshmanley 05-24-07, 03:22 PM thanks ShapS!
i will have to try that tonight when i get home.
aldamon, you are using the same D-Link right? how soon will we be able to pich this thing for one media server that works :D
jayoldschool 05-24-07, 04:10 PM Just installed WMP 11, and it is working! Listening to music right now, and controlling the menus with my Harmony 880 :D (see the thread on how to add an IR control to your PS3).
I haven't found videos or photos yet. Back to work.
Have I mentioned how much I love my PS3? ;)
<edit> Found the photos and the videos. I had to look in the "Photo" and "Video" section of the XMB (don't laugh - you will understand the confusion when you do this - each one lists folders for each but you can't access photos from Music, for example).
Photos work fine. Xvids do not. MPEGs taken with an HP camera do work, but no sound. I'll post if I figure out the right combo.
Jason.
tpaxadpom 05-24-07, 04:59 PM Some report that they have a good luck using transcoding with Nero MediaHome server (Nero Home v.7.9.6.0). See here:

I understand the confusion! They need to remove "video & picture" when your in the Music section. Not sure how they can do a work around for this though..

Yes, I agree because I got confuse also once I got everything to work.
my music could not be transferred, I received an error, I see all my photos but dont see any music files
dponeill 05-25-07, 03:01 PM I'm going to play around with this some more when I get home, but I was thinking that you may need to tell TVersity that it is connecting to something OVER THAN a PS3. I believe the current PS3 implementation expects to connect to the PS3 through the WEB browser and not UPNP. I really need something that will transcode my WMA Lossless files to WAV for playback.

It works but Nero Scout has to index everything you share and the indexing is ridiculously slow compared to TVersity. No thanks. Also, since my file server folds 24/7, I'm not sure when Nero Scout is going to index. It only does it when the CPU is idle. I might give it another try over the long weekend, but I'm not impressed so far.
aldamon, you are using the same D-Link right? how soon will we be able to pich this thing for one media server that works :D
Probably never. I told my wife what the PS3 could do now and her response was "It took me months to figure out the Media Lounge. Leave it alone." :p I'd rather fold with the PS3 anyway.
ppshooky 05-25-07, 06:37 PM So, even though TVersity supports the PS3, it still doesn't work because a patch needs to be put out?
Anyone try Orb yet?
scolumbo 05-25-07, 06:41 PM Anyone try Orb yet?Orb works, although it's slooow. I was using it through the web browser previously, but it also works as a DLNA server.
SimpleCenter works better IMO.

Cool, thanks. I'll give that one a shot.
EDIT: Wait, it doesn't explicitly say that it works for the PS3. But you've gotten it to work?
DubBucket 05-25-07, 06:56 PM MPEG2 seems to be the only format that plays consistantly on the PS3. So, either I've got to track down a good converter, or get something that transcodes on the fly like Nero.

Yes, it works for me. I haven't purchased the Premium version that transcodes, but the Basic version works fine.

i should probably count my blessings that my girlfriend wants nothing to do with my PS3...explaining all of it would make her ears bleed ;)
although the prospect of greys anatomy on an upscaled dvd would prob. result in more "sexy time"... also a ;)

i have ripped DVD's that are in MPEG2 and it always freezes my PS3...i am still using Tvercity
There is a new patch out that fixes the problems.

joshmanley 05-26-07, 01:11 PM Thanks Tomei!! i'm still at work but i will give that a shot tonight :D
Addixion 05-26-07, 02:17 PM I hope this works. I am trying to stream Sirius via TVersity with uSirius to the PS3. Works great on my Xbox 360, but thus far have been unsuccessful with PS3 1.8 (and the Wii, for that matter).
tongyang 05-26-07, 03:36 PM This works! Most of my videos (xvid) can now be streamed to the PS3 on the fly from my media PC. A few of them refuses to play but they're quite rare for now.
This seems to require a lot of CPU power though.
Another thing is that I had to manually edit ffdshow decoding to add borders to the videos because of overscan, but this is not much of an issue to me.
The new patch for Tversity works GREAT guys !!!!;) Thanks to Tomei !
darn, mine got choppy etc
i installed tversity, but my ps3 doesn't recognize it.
i setup wmp11 and my ps3 recognized it instantly.
I think it's all about the Firewall rahzel. For instance I use the crappy firewall of win xp and even if I allow tversity as an exception to pass the firewall it doesnt work. What i've done is disable the firewall and then i rebooted the pc so when its restarting there's no firewall. After this i've booted the ps3 and then Voila !!!

yeah, i'm using the XP firewall too.
ill give that a try. thanks.
tongyang 05-26-07, 08:19 PM I'm running Windows Media Center Edition and I only needed to go to the firewall and open up the port required by TVersity.
By the way... After streaming some videos for a while, my PS3's fan start going pretty loud. I'm wondering if this is also pretty CPU intensive for the PS3...

I suppose it's cpu intensive for your pc cause it's the pc who's doing all the conversion of your videos. I'll investigate more cause right now i did'nt watched a whole movie on it !

yup, that works as well.
Just found out that the port you have to open is 41952. So it works without disabling the firewall ;) I hope it works for you now rahzel !

I meant that the PC is fine but the PS3's fan starts screaming after a while - doesn't happen when playing games.
ya i know what you mean tongyang. But the logic would suppose that it's the opposite cause your ps3 doesnt convert anything at all it just accept the streaming from your pc. It's suppose to be the pc who's working hard.
joshmanley 05-27-07, 12:20 PM has anyone else had troubles with the PS3 only allowing a certain # of subfolders...D://media/music/cds/.../.../.../.../.../...
it seems to work great for my music but most of my cds are actually (it appears) just out of reach :(
also tv shows that i have dl'ed that are Xvid and Divx don't seem to want to work...i did use that update(thanks Tomei) dvd's that i have ripped seem to work, although they are .vob files that, same as my media lounge, mess up the audio(sometimes its french, sometimes director commentary, and sometimes nothing at all) :(
new path V1 and V2 screwed up audio, how can I remove that patch?
Tripjammer 05-27-07, 02:47 PM I am trying Tvercity right now. I got Nero Home working, Media Player 11 and Twonky Media all working. Right now my PS3 shows 3 media servers!
Nero Home played the most video files, like avi, divx...ect...but it is slow!
Media Player 11 was the fastest, but can not play many video files..
Twonky Media is very fast, totally awesome but it will not play many video files since it does not do transcoding yet..
It is so cool that you can run more than 1 media server and the PS3 will find it.
Did anyone get any default internet radio stations to work? It shows up as MP3 format, but when I select one it tries for a moment, but then changes to "unsupported format".

Yup, I have this exact issue. It's no biggie for me, just share all your directories under media (music, etc) instead of sharing media, I guess.
can you use tversity for 360 and ps3 simelataneously?
second, I was using tversity for 360 after patch by tversity successfuly, minus 5.1 and xvid capability, but once i added ps3 patch, it screwed up both 360/ps3, both audio/video, so please give us some insight whats happening here.
thanks

Uninstall Tversity then reinstall with the latest version. Then add the latest patches. It should work. I got mine working.
Remember for Tversity you what to enable UPnP in the router. Also you got to let tversity in your firewall.
Tripjammer 05-27-07, 08:16 PM I just tried this test.
I have tried all 4 good media servers
Media Player11
Nero MediaHome
Tversity Media Server
TwonkyMedia
Right now i am using these two
Media Player 11
Tversity Media
I can run both at the same time. I can play music with Media Player 11 and watch pictures with Tveristy media in a slide show, all at the same time. Pretty good that the PS3 can multitask like this. They did not limit it between different media server connections.
I have had all 4 media servers running and they all work but I guess i have to get more ram on my computer or a faster network, because i can not get Nero mediahome to run good. I is too slow.
Uninstall Tversity then reinstall with the latest version. Then add the latest patches. It should work. I got mine working.

m using wired connection, works fine, but audio was garbelled and video was kinda looks vcr quality.
could u please link latest tversity and latest patches link, so which one patch to install first and both back to back? or how?
I a
I have the same issue with tversity, garbled audio and crappy video

snooty! bro it was working fine before i got carried away with ps3 patch man
bigsully 05-28-07, 12:13 AM Long time lurker, first time poster.
Running:
PS3 60 gig (wifi connection)
Linksys WRT54G
Macbook Pro (wifi)
Macbook (wifi)
Mac Mini (wired)
Self-built PC tower (wired)
The day started with manifest frustration at continual drops of the PS Network trying to log in and play Madden, while my wife was playing WoW, followed every time by router crashes which required hard reset.
After mucking about on the PS3forums, I discovered there's a known issue with UPnP and this particular router; disabling UPnP on the router took care of that problem.
Then I decided to try the new DLNA file sharing stuff. I have a lot of movies and tv shows in mp4 on the Mini, and a bunch of old assorted dvix and xvid stuff on the (XP) PC. For kicks, I decided to start with the PC.
I tried installing Orb, and was unimpressed; it seemed to me to be primarily about web access - why bother to send video outside, through the internet, and back into my LAN to my PS3? I never really got it working, figuring this was going to be too inefficient for me anyway.
I grabbed TVersity along with today's PS3 patch and installed it, setting it to transcode on the fly (1280x720, based on PS3forums recommendations); at first only a handful of my files worked - some old episodes of Mr. Show, and the odd G.I. Joe and Transfrmers episode. Most of the files didn't work at all - either stalled with a "Connection Denied" or an "Unsupported Format" message, or just went to black for a few minutes then came back to the menu without ever playing.
Now I should point out that these are really old files, some of them going back to 2001, so who knows which or how many different version(s) of the divx codecs were used to encode them at the various points when they were capped.
Based on the PS3forums chatter, I installed the ffdshow filter, and it didn't make much difference. I then uninstalled my old xvid/divx codec, and installed the latest Xvid codec.
Bad idea. That broke everything - nothing worked.
I then uninstalled that and installed the mega-K-lite codec pack, and - after a couple of re-starts, it worked. I got and old episode of season 4 of Star Trek Enterprise to play...and it looked amazing! I don't know what the resolution was, but if I hadn't known better, just by looking at it, I've have guessed it was HD.
Of course this crashed after about 5 minutes.
Eventually I got it all working, by changing the transcoding target resolution from 1280x720 to 800x600. Since then, I've been watching a divx file of the 2005-2006 Seattle-Carolina NFC championship, and no problems. My wife has been playing WoW, and I've been surfing the web on the wireless at the same time, so I'm thinking it's working pretty well.
Finally, I installed the TwonkyMedia server on the Mini, and it shows up as a server...but all of the files (as expected) show up as unsupported, with the name "Unsupported File". When I try to play one, it will start, then stall out as unsupported, but its name in the list will update to the correct title.
I'll probably spend some time tomorrow trying to get VLC to transcode a Twonky-served file and see how that goes.
Anyway, long post. Sorry :).
My point is this is an awesome update (props to TVersity!)...and I haven't even scratched the "upconversion" feature yet...
joshmanley 05-28-07, 11:18 AM Yup, I have this exact issue. It's no biggie for me, just share all your directories under media (music, etc) instead of sharing media, I guess.
i just did that  PS3 thinks its so smart...i think i won this one
Josh Manley: 1
PS3: 0
joshmanley 05-28-07, 11:23 AM I have the same issue with tversity, garbled audio and crappy video
did you mess with the transcoder and make it a lower quality transfer?
if you are using wireless, the tvercity sw will compress the audio and video to match the speeds avail
if you are using wired connections you shouldn't have a problem, make sure you put in the desired Video output resolution in to match your tv as well
Edit
***heeding my own advice i just realized that my output resolution might...might be 1024 X 720  my tv should be 1280 x 720 which might be my problem with playing some of my video files**ashamed**i'll let everyone know if it works

Yup, I have the latest TVersity installed + PS3 patch. Streaming to PS3 and XBOX 360, both works.
It seems to be using a lot more CPU power to transcode to the XBOX 360 than to the PS3 though (I guess because it's encoding to WMV instead of MPEG2)
Not sure about your 2nd problem so can't help you there...
canoehead 05-28-07, 02:31 PM I cannot make Tversity work for me - I get various error messages. Installed Twonky and it works great - I can stream Audio while running a slideshow from the same server.
Video is a bit tougher - I have some DVD Images (ie Audio and Video Folders) I can play them but cannot pause, rewind, fast forward etc. Anyway to transcode on the fly to anything that the PS3 can properly manipulate?

i use DVD decrypter and DVD shrink and they both work well.

I use Magic DVD Copier. On the PS3 they show up as a bunch of MPEG-2s - if I click on the first one it will play, but no pause, etc. The audio is, ironically, ok - though ony stereo instead of the 5.1 I ripped. There may be a setting in Twonky I'm missing - this is all new to me.

yeah my PS3 only plays stereo as well :( but i am able to fast forward and rewind just like any other video. my rips also show up as mpeg2's
do your rips show up in your computer as mpeg 2 or .vob files?

VOB I think - though I am at work now so can't check. I'm concerned that if I convert them to straight mpeg2s then they will exceed 4 gigs and cause the PS3 to choke.

Yup, they are vobs - though on the PS3 they show as mpeg2. I think that your remuxing solution above may exceed my technical skills (as an example, I thought that "mux" was a typo.
I tried converting one of the DVD images to an MPEG2 - but it showed as corrupted on the PS3 (though plays ok on the PC) - it is over 4gb. I then tried converting that to an MPEG-4 AVC - which also works on the PC but shows as unsupported on the PS3. I set it to try to make a straight MPEG-4, and I'll see if that works when I get home. Seems like we are all waiting for a killer UPnP / DLNA server program and it isn't here yet. I'm happy to pay $30-40 for something I know will work really well, but right now it is all guess and test.
