View Full Version : Is Firmware 1.80 Causing PS3 Problems ?
Filipinoyakuza 05-24-07, 03:54 PM The problems I'm having are with both POTC: Curse Of The Black Pearl and POTC: Dead Man Chest. Both movie BD will not read or load on my PS3 but the bonus material BD disc will load and play.Whats even worse is that when the BD movie disc for each movie will cause my PS3 to lock up badly where I have to manualy shut down my PS3 each time.
Now I dont know if it's BD movies discs themselves that are bad or if it's the PS3 firmware 1.80 that I downloaded last night thats causing the load and play problems with both POTC BD movies. Also I tried my other BD movies on my PS3 and they were able to load and play fine on my PS3.
Also I noticed last night after downloading the 1.80 firmware update that while playing MLB 07 that the game would some times hang for a couple seconds while in the middle of gameplay while me and a friend were playing last night
ToEhrIsHuman 05-24-07, 04:04 PM If anything, both POTC BDs loaded faster after the v. 1.8 upgrade for me - but I have no idea whether any BD-J update was included in the firmware or not.
I was able to get POTC-DMC to play last night after the download. I was mostly just messing around so didn't try the first movie.
jkcheng122 05-24-07, 04:11 PM hmm... i have not tried watching the 2 discs after the upgrade, will have to find out after i get home from work.
JBlacklow 05-24-07, 04:18 PM Sounds like a bad pair of discs.
rombullterrier 05-24-07, 04:22 PM The chances of your having two defective discs are slim to nil. Better look elsewhere.
Fettastic 05-24-07, 04:24 PM Maybe something went screwy with the update?
You're making me nervous. I haven't updated yet.

Just create a restore point....
Fettastic 05-24-07, 04:31 PM Just create a restore point....
I don't know what that means.
I still have 1.6 on CD-ROM. If 1.8 goes badly, can I just reload 1.6 or do I have to restore the factory settings (losing my saved game data) and do it that way?

i don't believe u can, during the update it specifically said you cant reroll back to an older version.

See now you're making me all paranoid. ;)
I fired up the first one last night, no problems with the 1.8 firmware.
MaynardJames 05-24-07, 04:45 PM Sounds like bad discs to me. I already had CBP in the PS3 when I did my update, and when the PS3 restarted after the update, it automatically loaded into the movie. So mine are working fine.
PioManiac 05-24-07, 04:47 PM I watched a good portion of both POTC I and II last night and had no issues at all,
but have not downloaded the 1.8 update yet.
JBlacklow 05-24-07, 04:48 PM Just retested both, load time (spinning coin/key) went from ~10s to less than ~5 with v1.80. Definitely not the PS3 or the firmware. I'd be willing to back that up with video and/or pix to quiet any HD DVD trolls.
So, Fettastic, upgrade with confidence. There's so much cool stuff that I couldn't wait until this afternoon.
Iggster 05-24-07, 05:01 PM i did notice while loading a dvd it took about 20 seconds to load i was like dam its as slow as my a2 and its never been slow. its usually so fast by the time i look at the screen its already loaded

lol
ill try it again later with a blu ray movie when im done watching matrix reloaded
Dave Mack 05-24-07, 05:28 PM mine seems swell. The upscaling looks good.

LA LA LA LA LA LA!Sounds like he's talking from disc insertion to first screen (FBI/MPAA warning). I'm not using autoplay, but loading the feature (either BD or DVD) takes ~10s to the first screen for me.
Iggster 05-24-07, 05:58 PM 10 seconds to load a blu ray movie once its all the way inside of the ps3
JBlacklow 05-24-07, 06:02 PM 10 seconds to load a blu ray movie once its all the way inside of the ps3That's what I meant by "loading the feature", yes.
joe_six_pack 05-24-07, 06:05 PM I played POTCII last night after the update. It was fine.
I played POTCI on tuesday before the update. It was fine.
I'll be playing POTCII again tonight for company because we'll be watching POTCIII tomorrow.
DaGamePimp 05-24-07, 06:09 PM No issues here with POTC : DMC playback , played Liar's Dice as well and it was fine .

Just a thought - you haven't got 1080/24p output set to automatic rather than off have you?
It could be your PS3 is outputting 24p video rather than 60p and your TV isn't happy?
AaronSCH 05-25-07, 10:45 AM I fired up the first one last night, no problems with the 1.8 firmware.
I watched POTC 1 and The Cowboys yesterday after completing the 1.8 firmware update. I didn't have a single problem.

This exact thing happened to me, last night. It was after 10:30, before the download and install was completed, but I really wanted to see how Priates looked. I was pulling my hair out - PS3 powers up fine, and the menu was fine. I pop in POTC, see the spinning coin as it loads than nothing - TV no likey the input. So I tried POTC:2 - same thing... Did I get two faulty discs???
I grabbed a disc I had recently watched, and the same thing happened, again. Black screen when the movie is done loading. Figured it had to be buried in the settings somewhere, and changed Auto - Off. POTC looks great, BTW!
I watched POTC I and an SD DVD after upgrading to 1.8. No problems and SD-DVD is not on par with my Toshiba HD-DVD upscaling.
Can't wait to play with this major upgrade over the weekend. I could see the media server I have running on my desktop. Now, if I can view all my media files, it will be sweet.
PioManiac 05-25-07, 11:39 AM WOOHOO!!! finally got 1080p working, thanks to the 1.8 update. :D
My Pioneer 5070 was not allowing my PS3 to output 1080p@60Hz,
so my max resolution output on the PS3 was 1080i.
Yes I know the PDP-5070HD is only a 1365x768 display,
but it is capable of accepting 1080p @ 24Hz, and passes the 3:2 pull down tests
So the scaling to 768p is working great!
Now it play s my Bluray's @1080p, and upconverts my 480 SD DVD's to 1080i
I've tried my SD DVD's of Ice Age II and Cars and they look amazing.
I also played both new POTC Blurays and the bonus features/games without issue.
Drewbert 05-25-07, 11:50 AM So those of you that upgraded to 1.8, can you see a difference in SD-DVD or is it just in your head?
:D
AaronSCH 05-25-07, 12:41 PM All I can say is that Cars looks as good on the PS3 as it does on my HD-A1.
PioManiac 05-25-07, 12:59 PM I cant really see a real benefit of the upscaling feature,
but thats likely because my Pioneer 5070 has no problem upscaling/processing SD DVD 480 movies without an external upconverter.
Both the following shots on my 5070 / PS3 prior to 1.8 update)
Underworld Evolution Blu-Ray

Underworld Evolution SD DVD
http://members.shaw.ca/VTXtreme/UW1sd.jpg
All photos completely untouched other than scaled down for web upload/display
I'm not saying 480i DVD upscaled to 1080i is as good as Bluray,
and still shots from a cheap $100 4.1 mp camera can only pick up so much...
but SD DVD, depending on the movie/transfer...can look as good as some lower Tier Blu ray and HD DVD's.
Whether you have good processors and scalers already built in to your display,
or you have to use an upscaling player ....its certainly a benefit if certain titles are
not coming to High Def anytime soon (StarWars,LOTR...etc)
I cant wait to compare Pixars Cars on Bluray to my SD DVD
Here's a couple from the SD DVD @ 480i via PS3 before 1.8 update

MaxDam77 05-25-07, 02:49 PM I've just checked LOTRs and the Matrix Ultimate collection (std DVDs) after the firmware 1.80 and they look absolutly fantastic. I don't plan to get them in blu ray anymore (if they ever come out).

You dont know what you will be missing out on
MaxDam77 05-25-07, 03:32 PM The thing is that I rarely watch them anymore,... I prefer get on blu ray movies that I don't own yet.
If I get the Matrix and the LOTR, after a while, like every movie I own, I'll stop watching them. HD version of the Matrix will have me concerned about "too much" details during the burling brawl and the final fight between Neo and Smith in revolutions, it looks too "CGI" in the standard version so in blu ray, it will be worse because it will be too detailed imo. The PS3 does a superb job upscalling thanks to the latest firmware 1.80, better than my oppo OPDV971H.

I tried this on PS3 I went into the BD settings and turned 24p video off from automatic.Still no luck with POTC 1.
Filipinoyakuza 05-26-07, 06:49 AM ***Update on my situation***:
So I went back and exchanged my copies of both POTC 1 & 2 for brand new copies.I still cant get POTC 1 to play only the bonus material BD, but I am now able to get POTC 2 to play sucessfully.
I also re formated my PS3 and restored the PS3 back to it's defaults. But still POTC 1 still wont load or read in my PS3 except at least with this copy it isnt causing my PS3 to lock up where I have to manualy restart my PS3.
I obvioulsy now think that firmware 1.80 caused this problem.Up until I download that update my PS3 was playing BD movies, regular DVD's, burned dvd's, and BD PS3 games flawless. It just sucks that one of the best BD movies (POTC1) out of my 12 BD movie collection wont load or play on my PS3.
I'm really pissed that I'm going to have send my PS3 in for probably 2 weeks to have them trouble shoot and fix this issue.Right now the PS3 is the only thing I have for watching any BD or normal DVD's, and for gaming.
MaxDam77 05-26-07, 07:20 AM I have watch POTC 1 entirely after the firmware 1.80 and no problem. I pop DMC right after to check and no problem. Guess you are unlucky.
xradman 05-26-07, 08:14 AM I was able to watch both POTC I and II with PS3 1.8 last night, but I did notice some problems with POTC I.
It took noticibly longer to load the disc than with any other Blu-ray disc I have played so far. Also hitting Play Movie button on the top menu (with just two button choices, Play Movie and Menu) kicked me out of the disc into PS3 dashboard. Getting into Menu option (with 4 button choices, Play, Scene Selection, Setup, and Features) then selecting Play worked fine.
