supposedly nothing divx related are supported, mp4 definitely should work as it is the format for all the trailers we can download.

it's the same formats that were described w/ the original specs

1) mpeg-4 (though it needs to be properly packaged, as those of us that have been transferring QT HD movie trailers are acutely aware)

2) mpeg-2

3) mpeg-1

There are ps3 video transcoders available for PC users, and those of us w/ Visualhub for mac can do the labor-intensive transcoding as well (albeit the process is rather time-consuming).

Edited to add -- there are hints from the PS site that, at some time, more codecs and formats will be compatible eventually. But that hasn't happened as of yet.

Everyone is saying to use WMP11 for streaming to the PS3. However, when I added all the files ot my library, WMP11 failed to pick up the .mp4 files I have.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Happened to me too. Im still not 100% on which codecs are good to go but my video files from my Sony digicam are working flawlessly.

The Zune software (which I won't install) is supposed to be a tweaked version of WMP11 that adds support for native mp4 to Windows.

all of the supported formats of course
The following types of files can be played under (Video).

Memory Stick Video Format
- MPEG-4 SP (AAC LC)
- H.264/MPEG-4 AVC Main Profile (AAC LC)
MPEG-1 (MPEG Audio Layer 2)
MPEG-2 PS (MPEG2 Audio Layer 2, AAC LC, AC3(Dolby Digital), LPCM)
MPEG-2 TS (MPEG2 Audio Layer 2)
AVI
- Motion JPEG (Linear PCM)
- Motion JPEG (μ-Law)
AVCHD (.m2ts)

and if you use an application like Nero MediaHome or TVersity they will transcode your media on the fly so the PS3 can playback those formats not supported.

i'm also getting the problem of MP4 files not showing up. i'm running XP Pro with WMP11 installed. the ps3 recognizes mpg, wmv, and my xvid avi's (the wmv and xvids dont play though).

i'm wondering if it's because WMP11 doesn't natively support MP4. if you go to the file types section, MP4 isn't listed anywhere. also if you right-click/properties on an mpeg, the media type says "Video". for MP4 the media type says "Other".

engaget posted a link to a hack to allow mp4 in wmp11 in their walkthough yesterday... I'll see if i can find it.

edit: they reference a registry hack, but dont link it or say what it is... engadget link (http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/24/sony-playstation-v1-8-hands-on/)

edit2: FOUND IT here is the link @ doom9 (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=124639)

warning! dont goof around in the registry unless you know what you are doing!

Is there any way to get 5.1 audio on movies to stream? I can get some .VOBs streamed over using Nero MediaHome, but audio seems to always be 2-channel PCM.

I can't get to the doom9 article at work. Would you mind either posting it here, or PMing it to me?

Thanks!

Its actually a forum thread... 3 consecutive posts below...

unskinnyboy

OK, try this - in the Registry navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Player\Ext ensions\Descriptions

and add a new String Value with the value set to the next incremental number (say 9 is the highest number there currently, your new one would be 10) and set the Data as 'MP4 Files (*.mp4)'.

Now go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Player\Ext ensions\MUIDescriptions, and create a new String Value with Data 'MP4 Files'.

Lastly go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Player\Ext ensions\Types and create a new String Value with Data '*.mp4'.

Now try the Open dialog box of WMPlayer. Note that the above paths are for WMP 9 series (which I have). If your version is any different, just poke around and find the appropriate paths yourself.

Cool thanks. That managed to make the MP4s appear in the drop-down menu.

While I was tinkering around with the registry I discovered how to make explorer recognise them as video too:

So if anyone else is interested:

1. do what unskinnyboy says to do.

2. Then you need to navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp4.

3.a) Change the (Default) String Value data to mp4file
b) Make a new String Value and name it Content Type.
c) Modify the data to video/mp4
d) Check that the PerceivedType String Value is video

You might wanna check this out:
http://aflux.deltaanime.net/Zero1/MP...install108.reg

(save target as, and double click to add to registry)

I wrote it some time ago for myself, but made it available because I found that some people liked what it did.

What it does is:
a) Associates MP4 files to WMP
b) Adds explorer context menus (Add to WMP list/now playing)
c) Gives MP4 files the icon used by WMP for MPG files.
d) Adds a file filter to WMP in the open file dialog.

And this is what it looks like
pic link at imageshack (http://img374.imageshack.us/my.php?image=untitled1zv8.png)

Basically MP4 files will act just like AVI files do (or as near as dammit)

I did write some useful info on my forum, which I had to take offline due to spam recently. If you need any more information I'll see what I can do.

hope this helps... sorry for my poor ripping skillz heh.

Hey everyone, i've just been following along. i've had the same troubles as all of you streaming mp4 to my ps3 using WMP11. Has anyone tried the above mentioned registry hack?

i just did it and yes the icons changed and the wmp11 accepts it, but it won't add to the actual library.
thus, the PS3 still doesn't find these files..

this just me, or is anyone else having the same problem.

I'm still having the same problems too.

I think I'm just going to start converting stuff to mpeg-2 instead. It's faster anyway.

WMP is a pain in the ass.

Just go ahead and use Windows Media Connect instead. You'll have to uninstall WMP11 first, though.

Windows 7 streams all of my MP4 files (H.264 baseline) to my PS3 natively.

This. This. THIS!

Anyone dicking around with WMP (gag), TVersity, or PlayOn needs to stop now. I've screwed with all of them and no matter how much BS I tweak, what codec packs I install, and what animals I sacrifice to the fire orb none of them work right 100% of the time. Then I found PS3 Media Server. You install it, open up a port on your router, tell it where your media is stored, and start the program. And then it just works. I have yet to have a problem streaming any format the PS3 will recognize. Better yet I have yet to find a codec PMS (giggle) will not transcode, and this is without having to hunt down and install any codec packs.

It's a god send, it's free, it works on Macs and PCs.
