I am amazed at the menu system of PoTC....that talking 3 dimensional pirate skull is really cool.....are there any titles with really cool menu systems?

Gets my vote. Previously I liked one of the Weinstein menus (on HD DVD), but I can't think of any menus that I like as much as the ones on these Pirates discs. Nice touch by Disney.

That'd be a neat wallpaper!!

It was taken by a 3 megapixel camera, then shrunk to fit the screen at 800 pixels width.....

The original in HD looks a heck of a lot better......

Disney is by far the best studio in terms of creating overall titles.....

Agreed. This menu is what I used last night to compare and decide between setting the PS3 for 1080i or 720p output after I installed the 1.8 firmware update. The detail on the skull is so good that I could clearly see the difference between the two settings and I decided on 720p for my good old Sanyo Z2.

So you mean the 720p is better than 1080i?????

Also, the liar's dice intro has the same skull but using a much larger talking image...

Based on what I could see via the Z2 (which is 720p native rez.), I think it is. At least for this projector. To be honest, 1080i looked great on the Sanyo and I was more than happy with it before the 1.8 upgrade. But once I was able to view the menu in both resolutions, the skull looked a bit clearer in 720p. At the 1080i setting, the skull's texture seemed more "smeared" for lack of a better word.

A larger skull as it introduces Liar's Dice....the original is obviously much clearer than this....the flickering torches were also a nice touch....

The menu is definitely well done and a treat to see, maybe once or twice. It's just a bit drawn out when you are actually trying to just get to the movie or change your settings. Especially after having to skip through the 20min of trailers and anti-piracy messages before you can even get to the menu.

Just be glad the studios allow you to SKIP the trailers! ;)

As to being drawn out, you CAN press the skip button and head directly to the movie.

In fact, since I've already seen this movie several times, I was more impressed by the packaging AROUND the movie than the movie itself...it's nice to see such care and craftmanship lovingly bestowed on a product, especially when compared to the barebones (e.g. no artwork on the disc face) Sony offerings or the really nasty looking HD-DVD products :D

What you said. Just.....give.....me.....the.....d**ned.....movie.

This multiple-trailer-with-no-escape-option crap is exactly what Disney used to do on DVD. Hopefully, they'll migrate on BD to the same paradigm as they have on DVD i.e. one can simply press the menu button to skip all the annoying trailers.

What do you mean, I could skip each trailer as they came up by using the scan forward button. Not ideal obviously, but better than having to look at trailers that i am not interested in

In the end, I hope it will be possible to simply download the most recent trailers you want from the net.

Indeed you can, but a better approach is that used by Disney on their current DVD's i.e. press the menu button and skip all the trailers. This affords maximum flexibility to the consumer: watch no trailers or all trailers or skip thru and watch only those of interest. Menu button is disabled during trailers on their current BD's and I find this annoying as, apparently, do others.

The menu is the best i have ever seen.

It is awesome how when he tells you to choose wisely and you click on Main Menu---he says a little quote like good luck and then it slowly leads into the theme song.

The skull is very cool. As for that Lionsgate title with the previous best menu, that would be First Blood.

Since the PS3 doesn't pick up where you left off when attempting to replay the disc, the trailers, antipiracy video and disclaimer at the beginning are VERY annoying. By the time you get to the menu, you don't want to wait for skull to stop talking before getting access to the menu. I swear, you have to press the "next chapter" button ten to fifteen times before you get to the main menu. And the transitions between menus are not seamless because the talking skull has to reset before it talks during the transition. Pretty lame in my mind.

I'm all for extras and cool menu systems, but this one is actually a hinderance and not something "cool".

Please, Disney, let us press the "main menu" button during those trailers. Don't force it upon us.

I really like this menu as well. My previous favorite menu was Miami Vice on HD DVD. The Miami Vice HD DVD introduced image resizing, and the music really gets you in the mood to watch the movie.

You might need a firmware...

1. I can watch the movie, transition over to Liar's Dice, play a game or several games, then go back to the same exact spot in the movie that I left. I did it several times yesterday while trying to take pics of the "loading" key.

2. The transition and loading times for the movie itself and for when you move between liar's dice and the movie are between 2 seconds to 4 seconds....i timed it because i was trying to get a good pic of the "loading" key and it was very hard to get it becaues it occured so fast.

3. Other than that, I agree about too many trailers :)

I recieved both curse of the black pearl and dead man's chest yesterday from Amazon. What a joke. I own two blu ray players the SONY and the new Samsung BDP-1200. Curse of the Black Pearl take forever to load on both players and Dead Man's Chest won't load at all on the SONY player, just stops hangs up. On the Samsung it loads after a long delay and plays all the trailers but when the main Flaming Skull logo comes up there is now "Play Movie" selection to start the movie. It just keeps playing the audio. Is anyone else experiencing this. Do I have a defective disk?

Most folks issues with POTC and the BD-P1200 disappeared after installing the new firmware. Have you done this and you're still having problems?

Best to post this in the BR player section. There's already tons of discussion about POTC and Sammy/Sony players.

I agree with the 720p for the Z2. I have NEVER had any luck feeding it 1080i. 720p is its NATIVE rez and it seems to like it far better.

I have a PS3 with the latest firmware. I don't have a problem playing it, it just takes too much time pressing the next chapter button every time a new trailer comes up. I'm not complaining about the hardware, just the fact that Disney authored the disc in such a way that I cannot jump straight to the menu.

1. The resume movie feature will probably work for me as long as I never leave the Blu-Ray movie play mode. I'm talking about resuming the movie after I hit stop, return to the PS3 GUI and then go back to the movie. Every time I do that, I have to start at the begining of the disc again. There is no resume play after leaving the movie.

2. The transitions aren't that bad. I'm just impatient. Especially since I have been watching it many times since I got the discs and it's repetitive. After I see the transitions once, I don't need to hear what the skull has to say each time. Especially since what he is saying is not pertainant.

3. Yes. Too many trailers. Maybe if it were a BD-Live feature where the trailers changed each time, but embedding trailers at the front of a movie disc is just plain lame. I mean, when I watch POTC BD five years from now, I don't want to watch a trailer for Georgia Rule. I'll instantly remember that Lindsay Lohan was hot pre-Herbie Fully Loaded and not hot and strung out on coke post-Herbie Fully Loaded. :D

yeah, i do hate that the most recent blurays seems to prevent bookmarking, auto restart at last spot viewed, and force one to skip through trailer after trailer. ugghh. this is even worse than HD DVD. it was one reason i used to get bluray over hd dvd when same title was on both. i hope they stop and go back to how they used to let one's PC store the last viewed spot.

I really wish the movie would just start when the disc is inserted. No menus, and obviously no trailers/commercials when the disc in inserted. There's no need for a beginning menu with Blu-ray. I believe some HD-DVD titles already incorporate this logic?

Nice Menu but i think this is the first BD disc that won't let you resume after quitting BD, not turning off the system of course. Other movies let you resume back after stopping but this one won't. And of course there's no way to resume the movie after the system shut down. I'm using ps3 so might be different on settop players.

How's the dice game? Cool for a little bit of fun? Or like with most SD-DVD based games gets old within about 2 minutes? Just curious. The menu's looked pretty cool on the commercial. They have been running the high def version of the commercial on MOJO, but on ESPNHD, they had it letterboxed so I think it was only an SD commercial.

I've actually really enjoyed the dice game. Many times, I wish there were no videos in between the game-play (why do we need a rum break with a chicken on the table?). At least make those skipable. When I play, I'm actually strategizing and it takes a really well made game to do that.

Nice looking menus but...
Both Pirate movies earn the dubious distinction of movies I dread sticking in my player the most.
My thumb almost falls asleep the amount of times I have to press the skip button.
Why do we have to go back to the stone ages of DVDs?
There is no excuse why I can't hit the menu button and get right to the scene selections.

The game is definitely an adult game (unlike Chicken Little's Alien Invaders) and most likely very interesting to those who are into card and dice games. I'm not into those kinds of games but it is definitely playable repeatedly as the random nature of the dice throws means the strategies are never the same, so one can "take a break" during the movie, play a game or two, then return back to where he or she stopped to continue watching the movie. I also watched the movie again, the scene where turner plays against davey jones for the key, and now that i know the game it's cool to be able to understand what is actually going on.
