View Full Version : PoTC: Comments on Liar's Dice?
asj2006 05-25-07, 01:24 AM A lot of care went into the making of this work, and it shows. Unlike Chicken Little's Alien Invaders game, which is targeted mostly at kids (although I've never been able to duplicate my wins to 5000 points after several tries), Liar's Dice is a rather complicated but fascinating dice game that combines live action with beautifully rendered animation. Disney developers were very concerened about details, including showing a slight motion in the cup with dice in the animation sequences.
They even added a nice booklet that goes into the rules (even though the game itself has the actors explaining the rules).
You can click on the thumbnails below to see the detailed pics of the booklet....

I'm taking the pulse of blu-ray owners who got this title....
asj2006 05-25-07, 02:20 AM I played around with it a little bit. I agree that clearly a lot of effort went into it. The live action clips are fun; I kind of want to keep playing it just to see all of them.
When i tried it out first this morning, I could not figure out the rules, but it seems it's more complicated than it looks....i beat pintel once, but lost every other time....but then again, i'm not a dice or card player...i would make a lousy pirate :D
There are quite a number of clips, but i noticed if you play it long enough some of the jokes repeat....disney hired the two actors to do this feature specifically....
asj2006 05-25-07, 10:53 AM Some screenshots for those who have not received their PoTC yet...the blending between video and animation was pretty ok, even artsy if you look at some shots below.....the two funny pirates plus a host of other pirates are your "drinking buddies" as you play Liar's Dice. They harangue you, make fun of you, and generally make you feel like you're not areal pirate. That is, until you actually start taking away Pintel's dice, at which point you make them angry :D

donricouga 05-25-07, 10:56 AM I'm not one thats into extra features but i must admit, this is well done. Mark my words, this is only the beginning potential of BD-J. It can only get better, especially when all players reach the minimum requirement of BD-J profile 1.1
There was an article posted to AV Watch (http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.watch.impress.co.jp%2Fav%2Fdocs %2F20070524%2Favt005.htm&langpair=ja%7Cen&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&prev=%2Flanguage_tools) which introduces authoring work for Pirates done by PHL (Panasonic), but since it's a machine translation, it's difficult to read entire thing :)

Matsushita (Panasonic) is a BIG blu-ray backer, and have been hiring developers like crazy recently, and even setting up a research center for blu-ray development.
Yah, that article is barely readable :(
Both Pirates discs are utterly spectacular Blu-ray high def movies! Great job Disney!
mdc3000 05-25-07, 10:10 PM While a cool idea, after playing around with this for a bit, I don't think I'd ever check it out again...and I had lots of comments repeat quite a few times... it was cool they shot this stuff specifically for the bd, but I'm not drooling over it...and what's with all the goat shots?! (while watching AWE last night and seeing that goat again after having played this, I laughed out loud when he was shown in the movie) Neat idea, but these 'interactive games' aren't of much interest to me really... I'll take features about the movie/making of over this anyday (luckily these Pirates discs have BOTH).

Actually, I think it's a great start for Disney, especially given that they had to restrain themselves from implementing stuff that would break almost all the players (and we already know this thing breaks players that don't have the latest firmware).
The game itself is more subtle than i at first thought, and you need some strategy to have a chance at winning (I won once in 6 tries so far)...i'm not a game player by far, so perhaps the game is similar to something out there (or did they pull it from one scene in the movie?)
The actors certainly responded correctly to the plays you made, but in future it might be possible to have better AI and software that actually morphs the actors so they become much more dynamic than just video segments.
Or, simply being able to play liar's dice online against other people would be cool. Fox demoed a multiplayer X-men game at JavaOne, so the possibilities are pretty large.
asj2006 05-26-07, 01:22 AM Hmmm...I just watched the scene where they played Liar's Dice (Will turner, Davy Jones, and the dad), and having played the Liar's Dice game earlier I could now somewhat follow the scene...but I guess there are subtleties there i was not aware of, since I got lost trying to follow it anyways....i am a bad dice player :(
This is one heck of a disc!

yeah, I knew I had seen that game somewhere...turns out they based it on that game between turner, Davy Jones, and the dad....when I first saw this movie, I just did not even try to understand how the heck will turner won (or lost) :o
Now that I have a basic understanding of the rules, I tried to figure it out....I'll figure it out yet :D

Its funny because I knew this game before pirates even came out. This is an old Chinese drinking game, the loser usually drinks a shot of something. The only difference is that we don't remove one of the dice when you lose.
Supermans 05-26-07, 07:04 AM I played it once and won on my first try only losing 1 dice. I'm going to have to play again to see if it was simply luck.
The game cheats! Yea, they're pirates, but still...lol.
Twice in the only game I played, I called pintel a liar...and the dice shown proved me correct. But the game said he wasn't a liar, and took one of my dice instead.

I dunno...i haven't seen it cheat yet...are you sure you're not looking at YOUR own dice? [ducks quickly] :D
dogdoctor 05-26-07, 10:57 PM I've played it 3 times and never lost more than 2 die. I've never exerienced cheating. I've experienced some dumb betting though from the computer. It's pretty easy once you get the strategy of betting and if you get the upper hand, forcing the opposition to lie to stay alive.
asj2006 05-27-07, 01:25 AM The clips are pretty funny, and i uncovered more that i never saw before by playing again....
also, it looks like i misunderstood the rules...it turns out when you guess, you are guessing your dice PLUS his dice....so, if you have two FOURS and think that he has one FOUR, if you say three FOURS you are NOT lying....

Ahh...that does make a difference...a very big difference.

Yep...i found another clip...if you don't do anything while the game is on, Pintel suddenly removed your dice and mutters "Take your turn before I take it from you!".....I was working on something and neglected the game for a few minutes..,.
The funny thing is if you do it again, he now mutters "be smart now...or davy jones be growing a new barnacle before this game end!"
And another variation after sometime, Pintel: "I'll kill(?) your scurvy bones if you don't take your turn soon mate!"
And of course, i like this:
Pintel: "Congratulations. You beat us! Now here's your chicken!"
This is like an easter egg hunt for clips ;)
PS. I also liked it when they went on their "Rum Run"...had no idea what the heck was happening...thought i had lost, until they came back again... :D
That would explain what I thought was cheating, I think...I'll have to check it out again.
Did anyone elseplay this game and find that the dice on screen weren't what the game says you had (or vice-versa for Pintel)?
In other words, I bid (lied) 3-5's, and he called me a Liar. But the game said, "You are not lying, Pintel loses a die". I kept doing this, and the game seemed to not know what the dice really were. Weird. So I quit playing as it seemed buggy to me.

You mean no matter what you have you just say three 5s all the time? Have never seen anything like it, but I'll try that.....could be a bug!
One thing that REALLY irritates me is that the thing shows Pintel's dice at the end of each round only for like 2 seconds!!!!! And there's no way to pause the thing...

No, that was just one example where the dice shown on the board had absolutely no resemblance to my bid, and when Pintel called me a Liar it said, "you are not lying, Pintel loses one die". In fact, I WAS lying and I should have lost the die.
There were multiple instances of this. And I would swear that sometimes it went the other way too. Pintel would bid 3-2's, and I'd call him a liar, and when they showed his dice...I tried to count them up really fast and i only saw 2-2's but the game said he wasn't lying.
I am running the game on a PS3 w/ firmware 1.8 if that matters.
I actually think it's a pretty cool game, not the implementation, but I'm talking about the game itself. It's fun trying to call other people's bluffs. This would be SUPERCOOL if you could play online vs. other BD owners.

Must be a bug, but I haven't seen it, and i have played it close to 10 times now...i still have don't have that latest firmware, but i doubt that's the difference....
As to the playability, it would have been great if you COULD play it online against other people, or at least have a central record of win/loss for others to see....the limits of Blu-ray at the moment because of BD-Live being MIA :(
One more thing...i think making features like this where extra clips are used as part of the feature is a great way to get more into the spirit of the title...i did not care about that dice game played in PoTC 2 when i first saw it (mainly because i had no idea what the heck they were doing), but now that i know this, i find myself replaying that scene to see whether i could pick up the game flow.....

For instance, if you have 2 fives and bid that there are 3, you are telling the truth if he has one. That is part of the whole strategy of the game.

I missed that too actually...i don't have a good head for card or dice games and could not figure out the rules at first...

Ok, I'm an idiot. I'll go check and see if that's what was going on. :o :o :o

I don't know if it was just me, but that wasn't clear to me in the rules, though I did notice that when they did "multi-player" in the movie that it was based off the total number if dice in play.
I'm going to go through the rules again and see what happens.
Jon Spackman 05-27-07, 08:00 PM I would like to play the dice game but it doesnt work on the Sony BDP-S1. It loads the rule screen and stops there. It tries to show the boxes that would show the dice and number but then loads again the rules "yes or no" and repeats. It wont go past that. Nice work BD Java programmers!!

Any chance it's because you don't have the latest firmware?
Raines8416 05-27-07, 11:19 PM That game reminds me of the days of the Phillips CD-i gaming system.
asj2006 05-28-07, 01:32 AM Funniest line - Pintel: "May you catch a cannon ball in your tender place for wasting my time with a bet like that!"
Also, something to do with turtle or turtle soup which I did not catch...but I do know of the Chinese swear word "Turtle's Egg", so it might be related to this....
asj2006 05-28-07, 04:40 PM Ahhh...history and RULES!
