I just got a 61' Samsung DLP (HL-S6187W), how do I calibrate it? What should I know and where should I look?

Well, the good news is that you've gotten one of the more interesting sets to Calibrate. The bad news is that you've gotten one of the more interesting sets to calibrate.

You're probably not familiar, but you need to do a base calibration in the CCA menu where you basically measure your primaries and secondaries, enter the values in the CCA, then enter your desired REC709 values for the primaries / secondaries along with white. Make sure you turn CCA off before measuring anything and once everything is keyed in, then turn CCA back on.

Then when that's done you need to fine tune your calibration on an input level.
CCA calibrations spreads across all inputs.

Anyway, you can probably search and find a bit more information about CCA, etc.

A response like that assumes the consumer is very familiar with calibration. My take is that the poster needed basic and I mean basic calibration advice. To the poster, get Avia Home theater calibration dvd and DVE BR or HD DVD calibration disc and calibrate your display.

Thanks... I'm guessing the dvds are pretty much self explanatory? I am wondering about the different types of calibration... Will using a dvd make much of a difference? And what other routes could I take to calibrating my tv? All I'm aware of is that you generally need expensive equipment or a professional to do better calibrations, how right is that?

You can always hire a technician to professionally calibrate your tv if you don't want to spend the time to do it yourself. :)

icefirei,
I would definitely get one one the calibration disc's; Avia, DVE, if you have a hidef dvd player get one of these, BR or HD DVD calibration disc and calibrate your display. It will make a difference. If you want to have a pro calibrator come out and work on your set. A couple of guys that post over on the Rear Projection Units threads are Eliab and umr. I would highly recommend you try to contact them or you can go here to find someone; http://www.imagingscience.com/isf-trained.cfm.
That Samsung is an outstanding set from what I have read.
Good luck and enjoy
