View Full Version : All DVDs now freeze with 1.8
JayJervey 05-25-07, 06:14 PM After 1.8 upgrade, video freezes for all my DVDs when upscaling to1080i over HDMI. DVDs work fine at 480p (Upscaling off) and Blu-Ray works fine. I also have a Oppo 981HD and it upscales same DVDs to 1080i without a problem. What's going on here? Does anyone else have a problem? Do I have a bad cell processor that's crashing when doing the upscale?

jayoldschool 05-25-07, 06:27 PM Works fine for me. It upscales SD DVD to 1080i for me with no problems. Call tech if it still does it after rebooting...
Works great upscaling to 1080P for me.
Clean all your DVDs. Wipe them down with a paper towel and some Windex spray.
Slacker George 05-25-07, 07:00 PM This may be totally unrelated but there were BD freezing problems after a firmware update a while ago, 1.5 I think. It was related to the online connection somehow. You could prevent it by signing out of the Playstation Network before watching a disc.

Slacker George 05-25-07, 07:43 PM Here was a fix for the BD freezing someone posted. You could give it a try if you're desperate but I'd give tech support a call first.

I spent an hour on the phone with a Sony tech, and she had me reset the system in the menu (Restore Default Settings, NOT the Restore PS3 Settings). Then, turn off the power and turn off the main power in back. While holding the power on button in front, turn on the power in back and release the front power button AFTER the second beep. You will need to redo all your settings since the reset will clear everything, and you should be good to go.

I don't recommend using a paper towel with Windex spray. Use a non-lint towel or one of those optical cleaning cloth used for cameras so as not to scratch the disc. Just dampen the cloth slightly and use strokes from the center of the disc to the outside. Do not use a circular motion.
YMMV,

If you call Sony, they'll just tell you to 1)replace all your defective dvd discs 2)backup your system to a flash drive (you DO have a flash drive, right?!) and then reinstall the system 3)send it in for a replacement. So just use some Windex, but you're right about NOT using a paper towel: it's not abrasive enough. Try some sandpaper. Or rock candy... :D
JayJervey 05-25-07, 11:40 PM Did a full reset. No go. Still hangs. I must have a defective unit.
gamble1177 05-27-07, 10:24 PM no no no after the 1.8 update mine does the same thing i put a dvd/bluray/game in and it never loads. the little swirl thing does its dance but the icon for the game never shows. when i start the ps3 up with a dvd/bd/game in it just hangs at the little wave streamline thing. this pisses me off.
gamble1177 05-27-07, 11:06 PM update chech it out if you are having problems with it freezing trying to play games, dvds, or bds you must disable the media server setting under the network settings and restart the ps3. after that i was able to play dvds with upscale and all the other new features. for whatever reason the media server stuff caused a conflict with the rom and reading whatever cd format was in the rom. mine works now and i like the upscaling features. and the media server isnt that big of a loss for me cause i wasnt going to use it in the first place.
jewing1043 05-27-07, 11:20 PM fine for me
Jeff Flowerday 05-28-07, 12:07 AM I had BR planet earth keep freezing on my on Saturday. Had to turn of networking and restart the PS3 to finally get it to play through.
After that all was fine watched another BR without hickup and 2 SD DVDS.
