I'm perplexed. I see on the list that people are importing HD-DVD's from the UK, Spain and Japan. Even saw a screenshot of one of the movies I want and it had JP subtitles.......

How are you guys accomplishing this? On what hardware are you playing it on? I want to get Reign of Fire, Equilibrium, Underworld: Evolution. I understand sometimes the language obviously won't be correct, but can someone educate me? I tried a search it must have been to broad. Care to educate us new people? Someone mentioned Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.co.jp but I don't speak spanish let alone JP.

Thanks,

-JD-

P.S. The prices at Amazon.co.uk include VAT. If you're shipping to North America, they remove VAT (which means about a 15% discount off the listed price).

Someone sent me a link to a nice place. Expensive, but looks like this is the way to go if you gotta have it.

http://xploitedcinema.com/catalog/hd-dvd-c-25_34.html?osCsid=3ad2a1d43cf27d6cf126eacd4d62ab20

As far as Amazon.uk, the only thing that may even interest me a little bit is Harry Potter. I'll go through it again.

It's cheaper to get Goblet of Fire through Amazon.co.uk than it is through xploitedcinema.

Hi, JonProphet. There's a thread around here somewhere with various sites . . .

Also, I've found Amazon UK to be very easy to use -- it just won't get you all of the imports you want. The good thing about it is that you do not need to set up a new account if you are already an Amazon customer. As for other Amazon international sites, most of them are pretty easy to navigate, even if you don't speak the language, because they are set up pretty much like the US site. (You can almost always search for HD DVD and pull up the HD DVDs you are looking for.)

Other places to check out are importers in the US. You will find them in the above thread. Good luck.

xploited cinema is the easiest way (and usually fastest and cheapest). He seems to have all the releases that folks are asking for, his prices usually beat amazon."insert country here" and since he is shipping from within the US the shipping charges are not terrible and are from most end user reports very fast. The owner also posts here from time to time.

Underworld Evolution is in English with Spanish Subs but the subs can be removed (there is a thread on this)
Reign of Fire (I have the Japanese Version personally) Looks great, has Japanese subs but the language spoken is in English. The subs can be removed (I normally just hit the subtitle button until they go away on all 4 of the Japanese discs I have)

Any of the import discs will play on any HDDVD player (with one exception that apparently does NOT like the 360 add on ..it is a German disc but I can't remember the name) as HDDVD is Region Free meaninng that any disc that is made anywhere in the world should play just fine on any player anywhere in the world.

Last but not least the only other thing to be aware of is that some releases (French discs from Studio Canal in particular) have "forced" subtitles meaning that while the disc is in English the subtitles can not be turned off in any manner. There are as far as I know only a few of these discs (less than 5) and they all seem to be French in origin.

Hope this helps. I have been waiting for someone to sell me a copy of Equilibrium for a while now at a decent price ($45 is a bit steep for me) and at the moment Xploited seems to have the best prices on any of the Japanese discs (the Japanese discs are ~$49 in Japan (depending on exchange rate) I have a friend living there who is looking for a used copy of it for me as well as perusing the many FS/T forums for folks selling it but especially after you factor in shipping Xploited is hands down the cheapest I have found for 99% of the import discs if you are looking for them new

The discs are cheaper but at $15 shipping unless you are ordering a ton of them (and there aren't that many) xploited seems to come out cheaper most of the time (and no I don't work for xploited or even know anyone there..just from reading member comments here)

Stalingrad (i.e. Enemy at the Gates) is the disc that isn't playing well for many here, so just be wary of that disc. All others seem to work just great, and Underworld Evolution is currently being rated as one of THE best HD-DVD's, not just an import!

Where did you get the $15 shipping number? Here is my order from Amazon.co.uk this week:

Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire [HD DVD] [2005] - Daniel Radcliffe
£11.04 - Quantity: 1 - In stock
Condition: new
Sold by: Amazon.co.uk
Gift options None

La Haine [HD DVD] [1995] - Vincent Cassel
£12.75 - Quantity: 1 - In stock
Condition: new
Sold by: Amazon.co.uk
Gift options None

Subtotal of Items: £23.79
Postage & Packing: £4.07 <-- That's about US$8 total for two movies shipped to Canada.
------
Total for this order: £27.86 <-- US$55.28

I've found that in general UK discs are cheaper at Amazon UK than at Xploited, but French discs are cheaper at Xploited than at Amazon France.
I had a cursory glance at Amazon.fr and Xploited too yesterday, and that sounds about right. However, I note that La Haine (a French title) was cheapest at Amazon.co.uk. See my order above.

Where to buy imports seems to have been covered pretty thoroughly in this thread by now, so one more thing to add is this site (http://www.dvdaficionado.com/dvds.html?id=dvdaf.highdefinition.hd-dvd) that makes it easy to find out which movies are being released where with its per country list of HD DVD releases.

I think this is one of the best exploits of HD-DVD to ever exist.

There's tread going on about what plays on what, and what has issues:

I hope they keep it up, it's useful info. :)
