View Full Version : Tomacro limHD200i HD media player with H.264 oldpainless68 03-02-08, 02:35 AM Jackie - does the lack of communication mean that Tomacro are no longer working on the Lim200i? K sirhc55 03-02-08, 05:03 PM Another one, Mvix did the same thing. Quit doing updates for the 760HD (last update was July 07) and launched the 780HD. Fortunately with a little hack you can upgrade the 760 to the 780. (If you want to chance it and void your warranty). But still, just dumping support for all the 760 owners is really bad. I’m with you on this. I placed my Mvix 760 in a cupboard and bought the LIM. Now with the Mvix out of the cupboard and firmware 2.0.1 installed and working beautifully - guess where the LIM is going? topcat888 03-03-08, 11:52 AM eBay...!?! :D dp70 03-03-08, 12:41 PM I have an iStar HD Mini on the way and look forward to comparing it with the limHD. It's too bad Tomacro was unable to correct the bugs in the limHD. At the beginning of this thread, this player seemed very promising. pc01 03-03-08, 12:58 PM Mark, From my understanding, it is not that they are not able to correct the bug, it is just they don't want to. I kind of understand their prospetive, but, again, we the consumers are stucked. i.e. without the cash flow, there will be no R&D. Like HiJack stated months ago (at the time even I refused to think that and hoped that Tomacro would be a "different company"), the new chip will replace the market. Obviously the new chip shifted Tomacro as well, and their focus is on their new products. What they are forgetting is, like many other different failed companies, people remember. Their reputation is down the drain for a long time, if they would ever come back again. I consider people here are somewhat "opinion leaders" in these high tech devices, as we get bad taste in our mouth, I am not sure how many more will hear about it. I hope I was all wrong here, because I do hope Tomacro will somehow hear us a little more. Jackie, please communicate this message to them, if you are still here. Burnerbum 03-04-08, 06:02 AM I sold my unit few weeks ago and now waiting for my popcorn hour. I will not buy their products again...not even with newer chipset... I have the Mvix 760 and was going to buy the Lim last fall untill i started reading the forums on it. I held off and glad i did. I recieved my PH a couple of weeks ago and it has some bugs too but at least they are constantly updating and fixing them. I suggest you do some reading on it. It has lots of features but not very well documented. I even found a feature that they didn't have documented in wiki. (it's there now) The torrent feature is cool if you download lots of torrents, it doesn't tie up your pc. Plus the PH only uses 20 watts so leaving it on all the time is much more cost effective than running a pc. It plays all the files i have so far. Only problem i have is the big difference is sound levels between clips. Even on my dvds. The sound on the menus is loud and then the movie is soft. This isn't on all dvds so it may be the way it's mastered but they did play fine on the Mvix. So between the 2 i can play just about anything, i still prefer the Mvix for playing standard dvd iso files. One big drawback is, I have the Venus 4 bay usb attached hdd enclosure. I have it set up as 4 individual drives so i can organize files better. The Mvix would recognize all 4 drives, the PH will only recognized 1 of the 4. If i combine all 4 drives to 1 the PH can see the one large drive. But now i have to rebuild the drives and reload the files into the 1 drive setup. So i guess all these unts have their good and bad features. philmckrackon 03-04-08, 06:10 AM I sold my unit few weeks ago and now waiting for my popcorn hour. I will not buy their products again...not even with newer chipset... I have the A-100 also and absolutely love it. I wish I could sell my LIM. I tried twice but had no takers. K Burnerbum 03-05-08, 06:11 AM I dont have a pch, but the usb's on the front and no usb slave would drive me nuts.... K Yes, i wish there was one usb on the back for my attached hard drive but having one in front is nice if you want to connect something quick and temporary like a flash drive. The (lack of) usb slave isn't that bad, i transfer my dvds to the PH over the network, i can transfer a full dvd to an iso image on it in less than 8 minutes. Plus, the majority of my storage is in the 4 disc usb attached storage anyway. Like i said before, all these players have their pros and cons. But in the short time i've had the PH it's an amazing little player especially for the price and the tech support is the best i've seen on any of these. philmckrackon 03-05-08, 06:31 AM I dont have a pch, but the usb's on the front and no usb slave would drive me nuts.... KI agree, it would drive me nuts if my NAS device didn't have a way around that. I have my PCH stuck behind my electronics cabinet so I don't even see it. Everything is run through my NAS. If you do, how do you use the remote with it?All my media gear is behind my TV that I don't need to access. I use a remote extender to get the signal to the ones that can't see the remote. I use an rf extender remote too. Makes life much easier. One thing i have to do is re-do my A/V cabinet, new equipment to add and some to remove but this is turning into a wiring nightmare with all these different sources and connections. Not like it was years ago. (run a composite signal, audio cable and your done). I do have a HDMI switcher and now i'm looking for a good HDMI splitter. I need to feed 5 tvs from the one source. Plus i have to re-wire the house and bring it up to HDMI. I will be placing a big $$$ order with monoprice soon. I've had good luck with their products. oldpainless68 03-09-08, 06:13 AM Mark, From my understanding, it is not that they are not able to correct the bug, it is just they don't want to. Sincerely, Perry I have emailed Jackie pretty much saying the same thing. It's a real shame, because they got a lot of things right : alloy body and no fan needed, got MKV playback pretty much spot on (and lets not forget, would the other players have got MKV playback without the push from Tomacro?) and great picture quality. Shame they could not follow through with the rest of the developments that the kind folks on here have suggested. For the moment, I'll stick with my Lim until something that I'm happy with comes out (4+ usb slots on the back on the unit, no fan, space for hard disk, HDMI & coax, jpegs and text for each movie etc). K philmckrackon 03-09-08, 08:02 AM It's a real shame, because they got a lot of things right : alloy body and no fan needed, got MKV playback pretty much spot on (and lets not forget, would the other players have got MKV playback without the push from Tomacro?) and great picture quality. The push for MKV is what got me interested in the LIM, unfortunately it seamed after that, further work dwindled. If Tomacro had followed through with the firmware work and had better communication I would seriously entertain looking at new products they might offer, as it stands, any and all people who I know and who come to me for AV advice know to steer clear of Tomacro. Bad word gets around exponentially, I tell someone, who then tells someone and so on. Pitty... Hi-Jack 03-10-08, 07:45 AM (and lets not forget, would the other players have got MKV playback without the push from Tomacro?) K yes they would have as they all stated they would look into adding it... Tomacro was first indeed but let's not forget it took them a month or 2-3 to get it working (as the first release including MKV did not play MKV at all) and we was already testing MKV with DvICo before they ever released support. I responded this back in the days as well...) I hope they won't bring newer devices... It would mean repetition of the things we already know. They can't handle it unless they expand resources severily and upgrade their skills as they shown pretty poor updates so far and could not keep up with the rest, digin behind the "HD only" excuse... In addition, I join the group of consumers that state Tomacro should not use puppets to comunicate but invest into customer support and have people directly available to interact with consumers. Sorry to say, but you are one of the main reasons Tomacro got away with this and jackie, supporting their short vision of interacting thru only few people. I'm glad I could prevent Lim from becoming a success in Eu and be happy to do that again if they launch another failure like this which is equally unsupported or worthless except in 1/8th of the parts it should deliver. Maybe they will surprise us.... maybe not... I would be careful with interpreting whatever they claim in the future as so far 50% is proven overstatements in quality, support and updates... if not more... Enjoy SNOOPY12 03-11-08, 05:02 AM After reading this thread I have made up my mind to go for the POPCORN HOUR (PCH) unit instead of the LimHD200i . I almost bought the lim last month when visiting Hong Kong , but in the last minute I decided to do some research on the internet before I bought it. Thanks to this thread I have saved myself for lots of trouble (as well as saved my money). I have noticed that there is a new lim model out as well , but found only one website that sells it .I'm not considering to buy any lim products , but just to inform others on this forum in case you havent noticed. Since this is my first post it seems like i'm not allowed to post URL's yet , but if anyone wants to chech it out you can use google to search for HOLYCOLOR , and the first result that comes up is to their company presentation at the ALIBABA website. Then under HDD MEDIA PLAYERS you will see it. Holycolor also have their own website where they sells the product , www(dot)holycolor(dot)com under products you choose cd/hd player. The model is called limHD210s There is no information about this new product at Tomacros official website yet though. However, you can "initially buy" something much better for the same money... That's the other side of the medaille from what you said above... Can't argue with the fact this is equally true... I want to sell mine, i'm just not doing it because I feel like selling a cat in a bag. If you make a reasonable offer, you got yourself a second unit. I'm actually a reasonably happy user - I got it for playing mkv and avi files over the network and it does that reasonably well - Plays all my 720p stuff and about 50% of the 1080p things. The firmware bugs are annoying but not fatal - The most annoying one for me at the moment is that the unit seems to lock up when it encounters an avi file with an unsupported codec forcing me to walk over and press the power button. If it could just display a message and return to the menu my life would be so much better. It feels like the bugs that are there should be easy to fix so I'm really glad to hear that Tomacro are still working on the firmware. oldpainless68 03-14-08, 02:28 AM I got my Lim back about a month ago now and fortunately it had the 1206 firmware on. K I'm on the 1206 firmware which I believe is the latest one. The problem I have with 1080p playback seems to affect about 50% of the 1080p stuff I have, but none of the 720p stuff There's visual artifacts/glitches that appear all over the place (really bad - unwatchable). I haven't worked out the cause yet - It doesn't seem related to bit rate. The same issue happens whether playing from local disk, or via NFS over powerline ethernet. I can send you some samples of the offending mkvs if it helps. Cheers, Fecn john duff 03-14-08, 06:39 AM I'm on the 1206 firmware which I believe is the latest one. Yes it is the last firmware Tomacro ever releases. apollo1965 03-14-08, 08:25 AM After having problems playing most 1080p and dts files I decided to try loading the previous firmware. This appeared to go fine but when I have rebooted the lim it no longer sees the internal hard drive. When it starts up it say play in the top right corner then goes to menu as usual but shows no internal hard drive. I have also tried to recover it by turning on with the ok button but it wont respond to the ok button only the power button. The external usb works fine just the internal thats not working. Is there any way I can upgrade the firmware when it wont recognise the internal hard drive. dp70 03-14-08, 01:25 PM Yes, you can upgrade the firmware from an external USB hard drive or flash drive. Even if an internal hard drive is present, the limHD gives priority to update files found on the external device. Hi-Jack 03-14-08, 03:09 PM The model is called limHD210s There is no information about this new product at Tomacros official website yet though. Thank you all for an informative thread. :) This product is made of even cheaper materials than the LimHD200i, a so called budget player but uses the exact same firmware as the LimHD200i so equaly, stay away... Currentlmy there are only 2 units we can recommend making absolute great progress, PoPCorn hour and ISTAR but both have no fast copying methods for data so should be considered mainly streamers... They differ only hardware wise where the ISTAR has power button and VGA instead of Component and also has optical. PopCorn uses internal HDD while ISTAR only external (SATA/eSATA/USB2). Next in line, even with the current issues known, is TVIX M-6500A but twice as expensive and not living up to it's price yet. Should change in a month or two... I have been following the 6500 and PCH threads, and I see no reason at all to sell my Lim - so I for one am glad that new f/w is on the way. K ALL of the media players on the market have their share of problems. If your looking for the perfect player your not going to find it. It's just really poor when a company puts their current customers on hold while they develop a new product. Mvix did the same. They hadn't issued a new fw for the 760HD since last July. Then if Feb they launch the new 780HD. In March (8 months later) they come out with a fw update for the 760HD that has a couple of fixes. By then everyone had updated their 760 to 780 with the hacked fw. It was a very easy hack but 760 owners shouldn't have been forced into doing that. Mvix should have released the fw for the 760 to upgrade it without having to hack it. Mvix is currently working on the 800 which will have a tuner and recording capabilities. I know i won't touch that one until it's on the market for some time. If they can't get a simple player to work right i can't imagine what they will do with a recorder. PCH is currently supporting their customers by issuing fw updates regularly on a monthly basis but they too still have their share of problems. Time will only tell how the support will continue. They have another unit out, the Istar, which i believe uses the same fw. So hopefully the updates will continue coming. I own a Mvix and the PCH. All i want is a fw that is stable and will do what the unit was advertised to do. Nothing more, Nothing less. Probably (hopefully) within the next couple years someone will come out with a stable player and all of these units (Lim, Mvix, PCH, Tvix etc.) will end up in our closets or garage sale. And using the excuse that we are early adapters of new technology doesn't make it with me. Being an early adapter of new technology always comes with a price $$, costs more and less features than products coming out after but we shouldn't be paying a high price for products that won't even perform the basic functions it's advertised to do. The trend seems to be, build a product and ship it as soon as possible and we will fix the problems later (hopefully) with fw updates. And the sad part is consumers are starting to accept this as normal business practice. The software industry started this, ship the software and we will fix it with updates but now it's moved into everything. Even LCD TVs are coming out with upgradeable fw. China is flooding the market with inferior (undeveloped) products and the world is accepting them. digitalkid2 03-23-08, 09:57 AM Hey...that's uncalled for! I recently decided to not purchase the A-100 but I am not sure I would call it a dud just yet. It has not been on the market anywhere nearly as long as the limHD. I will give Popcorn Hour the nod when it comes to clever marketing! Hi-Jack 03-23-08, 02:12 PM In my opinion some people should open their eyes... I'm pretty sure 80% of the lim consumers will not even consider buying the new LiM SMP8634/35 based players as the company has shown it cannot handle communications or support at all. The people they use (and I consider even OldP being used in the background favouring him for beta tests and off course GenDVD as the alround God Spokesman/reseller/lim junkie) for getting you to buy the players are constantly referring to other players. There is two different things... The status the Lim HD is in is 10 X as poor as the TVIX but it's true they fail updating nowadays too working on the newer models, waiting for new Sigma SDK's and so on... I would not even dare to compare the Lim against a PoPCorn or ISTAR as only 10% of these players would already exceed what Lim can do for you... I already said before it's stupid to upgrade from Lim (if you are happy with it) but you can make a far better initial purchase than Lim or other Tomacro products. The brand is a not only a disappointment, it's a simple joke especially if you look at al their big announcements and the endless "gendvd" messages about how "soon" things will come and improve "greatly"... Every company will move on, every company fails at some point but NO company so far failed on all of the expectations people have from claims being "worlds first and best HD player" and that includes failing in communication, in service, in updates or even make the hardware decently. Maybe they used some of the feedback in the new products passed on by Gendvd who's the only one in direct contact with Lim as they take no interest talking to consumers. Consumers should teach them a lesson in 2 ways... Stop buying the products or stop buying them from this "gendvd" character... Only way they go away and abuse these forums to lure people into purchasing a bag full of air... and for that matter gendvd, don't use TvIX to make a comparison... They no fail to deliver firmware but it has not been like that for a year like Tomacro who issues updates with hardly any changes to fool consumers again into believing they are working hard and compare with more products... like NMT who get releases every month... Will you admit LimHD200i is failing brand against PopCorn and ISTAR? Please respond comparing Syabas NMT vs. Tomacro... I look forward to what cheap excuses you might wanna use to justify again how poor Tomacro is in general on all fronts... (Here's a tip: NMT are SMP8634/35 while Lim is EM8623.... sounds like a good excuse you might use to explain while the developers and the company is failing which actually have nothing to do with the chip, right?) Some people can be very happy I'm not a moderator here as this whole junk thread would have been rid of these marketing people and posts all the time which actually hardly carry information we can do something with (not OldP as he's doing a good job, sadly for the wrong brand). Anyway... enough... Bring it on and show us once more what you're "not" made off... and along the way, you and Tomacro should learn to take frigging responsibility for what you're not doing instead of excusing yourselves because others make the same mistakes... I would have arranged a "MASS RETURN" if ever we had recommended the LimHD200i but we never did fall for your nonsense so can't return what we never bought... did we now? Quickstep 03-23-08, 03:12 PM In my opinion some people should open their eyes... I agree with most of what you said and have been saying about the limHD but the A-100 as well as the Istar do have issues. A big one for A-100 is the reboot lockup and from my browsing over at the networkmediatank forum it does not appear that they are convinced there is even an issue yet. The other possibly related issue is the lack of a fan. It is not a good sign that there are multiple threads over there on how to add a fan. I think the A-100 is head and shoulders above the limHD but it sure is not perfect and I think the next 2-3 months will give us strong clues to the long term conclusion to the A-100! One last thing and that is that IMO the marketing gimmick (creating demand by creating the illusion of a shortage) of the A-100 is unpleasant and is almost as bad as the garbage that Tomacro tried with the limHD. I totaly agree with that, this business of signing up and waiting for an invitation to purchase is a first. This unit contains 2 boards, a case and a power supply which probably takes 5 minutes to assemble and package. I'm sure the boards can be in that short of supply. One thing about the Mvix is I was able to buy it locally and could return it within 30 days with no problems or shipping if i didn't want it. Which i did with my first one since the MAC address in the setup screen didn't match the MAC address sticker on the unit and had the wrong NAS key code. I called Mvix about it and opened a ticket about 6 weeks ago and still haven't heard back from them. But i had retuned it for another unit so i really don't care. But the fact that they don't care enough to contact me will stop me from buying from them again. oldpainless68 03-24-08, 03:08 AM The reason I'll stick with my Lim for the moment is a simple one - I don’t think any of the new players will deliver what everyone is looking for; I reckon it will take a few more generations. To clarify what I mean - my Lim plays back the files I want great. But, before I part with any cash for a new media player, it must have/be able to do the following: - Gigabit lan - USB port that can recognise a USB hub (at the back of the unit please...not on the F&^%$$% front!) - USB Slave - NAS compatibility - HDMI 1.3 - Internal Hard drive - A decent remote! (backlight touchcreen would be a nice option) - Displays covers & text - without having to be a programmer (is it that hard to create a folder for a movie/music, name it, drop it a txt file and a jpeg, and the player to just show the picture and txt??!)....possibility of adding an IMDB URL? - MP3 playlists - point and click at various files and it creates a playlist that you can save to the hard drive - Resume playback after power off (holds in memory last 5 files played and their position on poweroff- dvd players can do it!) - Alloy body (same as lim so no fan needed) - Looks like an A/V component that would look good in your rack! - Plays all the usual video and audio codecs/containers – with FF/RW - MKV playback supported by hardware, not just software - Lastly - open source f/w, once it’s stable - Oh, and while I am at it - an inbuilt dvd drive that can read cdr + dvd-+r & DL! I also understand the licencing issues with on-board DTS decoding...so passthrough over tos/coax/hdmi is fine. anyway, enough of my ranting! Phew, feel better now after getting that off my chest!...lol :D.....err hang on....have I just built a HTPC?....bugger!!! I not heard of a lockup on the A-100 but you are welcome sending me that info. As for the cooling, ISTAR does have a cooler inside which is disconnected and the user is free to connect it. It's silent as well... I never said PCH and ISTAR and other NMT have no issues, but they are quite more developed in general than Lim which was the actual message they cause less trouble and are a better choice to begin with. also the missing VFS and USB Slave can be things that give Lim an edge over these NMT players but for streaming device (what is the Lim mainly used for anyways), they are far more featured... The shortage is based on limited capacity of production and while shortage might exist for the PCH, there might be none for the ISTAR once released, the HD-X X900, the eGreat player and so on... They are all similar... but you have a point there that things are not right. (also was not my point to make) PS: Also MVIX USA is on our black list of not recommended players due to lacking support and updates but we do make a difference in brands that explain the situation or just ignore your info requests and rather lacking updates are for a few months or a full year... In reading the posts I am not really sure however that fans are the fix for the bootup lockup issues. I agree that the PCH is a much better media player than the limHD, if for no other reason than it costs way less. I almost feel sorry for the poor folks that paid nearly $600 for the early limHD units. I am not sure that I buy the shortage thing with the PCH. Maybe in the first month or so but they have been selling these units for months now. It still feels like a sales ploy. If it is not then they should take a few minutes to improve their website, at least keep it up to date. This may be a dumb question but who makes the PCH and who makes the Istar? BTW have you had a chance to look over the SageTV Media extender? Hi-Jack 03-24-08, 01:40 PM I have been systematically refusing samples for media extenders unless they can work stand alone. I'm not convinced anyone needs a box that "extends" what your PC can do on it's own unless it costs below 100$. Getting updated with the boot issues now. Seems quite a few experience it but so far, (and we have hundreds of A100 users as we done a buyin for 400 units) I can't recollect any messages about this... The whole point was to play files "without" the pc. Otherwise just use a HTPC. There is a big difference between using a PC with a media extender and using an HTPC. I have tried both and I much prefer PC or server + media extender over HTPC. I use my PC to record, remove commercials and place the commercial free video where I want it on my network. I use my two Linkplayer2s to view and delete using the universal remotes we use for our TVs. This is far less complicated and maintenance intensive than HTPC but most of all it is WAF. My wife and our adult children (when they visit) use it almost exclusively. I personally have never seen the need for an internal HDD for either of my NMPs. I have roughly 3TB of network storage spread between 1 Linux based server and a few USB drives. My main PC is used to schedule, record, cut commercials as well as everyday web surfing or whatever. My PC is located on the opposite side of house from either of my NMPs. IMO just because you transfer files to an internal HDD in the A-100 does not mean that you are fundamentally doing anything different than me. I assume you still use your PC to get video and you use your network to transfer that video to the A-100. If I had internal HDD capability and it provided a way to play higher bit rate TS files I would probably use it but it really is not something that I need or want at the moment. digitalkid2 03-24-08, 03:33 PM I have been systematically refusing samples for media extenders unless they can work stand alone. Good to know if anything pop up... and we'll join people asking for a solution if we can rebuild the issue... I hear what you are saying in regards to the SageTV Media Extender but....many folks that use media extenders use something like SageTV or BeyondTV or GBPVR to schedule and record TV shows. Yes I know a lot more folks use this software for their HTPCs however there are fair number like myself who use it in conjunction with their NMPs. The one thing that all media extenders is missing IMO is the ability to view a tv guide and schedule TV recordings right from your couch. This is something that HTPC folks can do. With the SageTV Extender I could potentially get that capability and not give up anything. I would also be willing to bet that their extender will work with some of the more widely used software servers like WIZD. I understand your reason for not reviewing it but it is unique and IMO has to be considered. It is NOT like Apple TV for example because it does not force you to use certain DRM'd video types and as I said I bet it does not actually force you to use SageTV. I also think that most folks with any type of media extender need and use their PC to either record, edit, rip or download and transfer the video that they will ultimately put on the internal HDD. So basically your definition of a stand alone media extender is one that has internal HDD capability. Yes that technically makes it stand alone BUT you have to admit that a PC is still required. One final point is that stand alone media players have a very limited amount of storage. Even if you install a 1TB HDD in one you will be severely restricted to how much music, pictures and video you can access...so in the end most folks will end up hooking their so called stand alone media extender to their network and to their PC. Yes they can disconnect their media extender from their network and they do not need a PC to view what is stored on the internal HDD and that has its place but I am willing to bet that is a small percentage of folks and in the end they will still need a PC and most likely a network. My family greatly appreciates not having to view and or fast forward through commercials which is why I do as much recording as I do. We have a DVR but it rarely gets used because of the fast forwarding thing. I have never had a need to have any of my video be portable on a HDD. Unfortunately or fortunately none of our friends have media extenders. My main PC is an old P4 2.53GHz that can record two shows simultaniously, cut commercials and I can browse the internet or what ever all at the same time. We can also be viewing video on the Linkplayers. This not bragging my point is that most folks that have not done this seem to think that your PC will be consumed by either recording or streaming video and that is simply not the case provided you are not transcoding that is. obr 03-25-08, 09:23 AM Let me add one more "feature" in your collection from reseller and consumer point of view: 999) Support from the company that does hardware. The communication is usually vague and tends to be more of "be patient, this is difficult problem but you will be happy" or it is someone like oldpainless68 smothering everything, giving the impression all is well with lots of teamwork and communication but in reality all is not well. Hi-Jack 03-25-08, 03:53 PM None are well, some are just worse than others... That's the bottom line... Need to wait for several more years until someone has the guts and funds to deliver and as far as HTPC and PC / Media Extenders are concerned, they are small useless steps to fake progress where big ones are needed to make any... Extenders would be worth their 200$ value if combining both extender and standalone playback abilities. I prefer a simple player (SMB/NFS supported) over any PC with extender as the extender limits the formats i can use (applied by Microshit who paid vendors to bring these rubbish devices) or I need to go patching around and that is less user friendly. PC's often are also not the right way for families with kids... wife maybe? It would be perfectly possible to have a blu-ray player out there in combination with the NMT software + extender abilities all together for example but someone is keeping this from being developed by not issuing licenses (Sony, Sigma) or keep the market mostly progress slow... Will never change... In the mean time we pay the same price for half baked limited unstable and sometimes okaish devices which carry values close to a blu-ray player... What do they do eventually to "bridge" the gap... Add DivX Support. Anybody happy? We are getting pissed on by many, some just piss more than others and actually, I do respect the small efforts from brands like PoPCorn Hour, ISTAR and Syabas in general. They set a new price level... That's a good start to stop overcharging products and i'm all for it... :-) http://www.mpcclub.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=519 I agree, Lim communication is something I have yet to see but if you compare players, it will end up in the list from reasonable to bad to worse... at least in mine... extenders are not even on it... it's a nice useless thing wrapped into beatifull words and pricing it at 50$ / 100 bucks might offer the people ideas this is "cheap" stuff... K i'd like to add some features that u missed ;-) ... an E-Sata (sata 300) connector that is hot-swappable and multi port enabled - would be cool to have one that is able to handle L-shaped as well as the the symmetric esata plugs. multiple samba servers/shares with username/pwd per share multiple nfs servers/shares with better security real upnp/dlna features - i can see my media servers but cannot use them :( and yeah i think its a htpc we all want built in a neat standalone box :) cheers - ahab666 apollo1965 04-05-08, 06:59 AM what's the point of it ? usng a 10/100 Mbit connection to copy/move big HD files - be prepaired to calculate 6-8 times longer transfer times compared to USB2. :-/ .... ahab666 Exacty where in my post does it say I want to copy/move big HD files to the lim. The concrete restore steps should be: press and hold the OK button and do not loosen , then turn the power on, loosened OK button after all the VFD lights turn bright, then wait for 20-30 minutes, after all VFD lights extinguished, turn off the power. And restart the machine, and it will be normal. Note: you must have the documents to restore the firmware (625 later version)within built-in hard drive, and you need confirm that firmware document include: bak.bin, update.bin, boot.bin, userpref.bin four documents, the name of the document is update (which is spelled in lowercase). Hi-Jack 04-11-08, 11:15 AM The proper procedure is... - Make the products less easy to fail - Make it work properly - Create 1 single upgrade file and not 3-4 That would help avoit this kind of frustration... Perry Hi-Jack 04-27-08, 12:17 PM Jackie has no influence on the releases and just forwards info from Tomacro to the forums spiced with his driven envie to sell sell sell... spicing up stuff before it reaches us. Anyway... if a release is due will be beta most likely just to keep the date and then pave further for months before reaching final again. If it will contain several improvements it would be great but protect yourself from expecting too much... Time does teach it's a bad thing with many brands... but Tomacro somehow is the best in that department... sta 04-28-08, 03:52 AM damit i wanna get my window fixed maybe i should give novatron an try :( windows? it works just with VISTA, XP users must limit the use with DOORS :D;) ahab666 04-29-08, 08:17 AM 5 more days, right Jackie!? I hope you keep your promise. Perry LOL - and it's 2 other days now ...... i am really courious and exited ..... ahab666 pc01 04-29-08, 09:41 PM Jackie, for some of us here, we are still hoping you will keep your words. Perry Hi-Jack 04-30-08, 02:06 AM We all hope he keeps his word... but hope if he does, the firmware has actually changed this time too gendvd 04-30-08, 12:08 PM We got a latest news from Tomacro engineers, we still need to wait for some time for the new firmware, I am afraid the new firmware will be out after the 310s coming into the market. Sorry about that. Hi-Jack 04-30-08, 01:31 PM Oh my God... This is really bad for poor Lim customers who been waiting and following your posts all over... Can you at least tell them why they have to wait this long? What firmware should we expect on the 310? The same old buggy limited version as on the current lims migrated to SMP863x platform? What is being added? What is being fixed? How much delay this time? Info, info, info, info, info.... (Anyone care to translate "info" in "craponese" for them?) john duff 04-30-08, 02:19 PM Can you at least tell them why they have to wait this long? To sell new 310s instead of secondhand 200i from disgusted customers. Hi-Jack 05-01-08, 12:28 AM That would surprise me seriously... as the messages so far point out that the 310 will hold the same FW ported to the new platform which would mean it will work as bad as the lim200 series itself... No sain person will put money on that... On the other hand, maybe Tomacro has had the "click" in the mean time seeing the community does not remain patient forever and goes in against the brand if not delivering which could mean they have extra resources on firmware development and are changing a lot around for the better... Based on history, I would still play safe and not expect too much until proper info is available or we actually can see what's going on... I don't know how Tomacro will straighten out the mess and mistrust they created with their consumers but time is running out for them to prove they can actually handle it... For all I care, they should stay in Asia and remain there... unless... they can deliver to EU standards and open up for some true communications instead of this puppet model with gendvd who makes loads of posts but never actually says anything...... SOunds familiar with the products... Should do a lot but actually doesn't do all that much after all... Enjoy dp70 05-01-08, 02:07 AM Check out what is possible (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rHahN-an1jE) just with end-user customization (no firmware changes) on the Networked Media Tank platform (Popcorn Hour, ISTAR HD, etc.) (This isn't my video... see the full thread about this movie UI template here (http://www.networkedmediatank.com/viewtopic.php?t=3187)). I had hoped that Tomacro would be able to come up with something at least remotely approaching this kind of UI, but that seems awfully unlikely at this point. I've picked up an ISTAR unit, and though it has a few quirks of its own, it is a huge improvement over the limHD. Hi-Jack 05-01-08, 02:14 AM NMT is HTML based interface allowing this kind of stuff but Tomacro is not. It does not prevent them from offering such interface though as also TVIX has it (Icon Browsing) and community developers provide tools to make things easy... It's a real shame, because the more competing suppliers in this space can only be good for us consumers - a case in point was the mad scramble by all the players to implement MKV playback. And doing things like 5 smb or nfs mount would be easy, if you have the source to curacao, without the source is it ridiculously difficult. So, that is why I spend more of my time fiddling with 863x. I'm using my lim diskless and accessing all the files over NFS from a linux fileserver. I seem to be hitting a problem whenever the lim browses through a directory which contains more than 30(ish) things listed. Once I've browsed through a big directory the lim freezes at the 'loading' screen whenever I try to play something... and the only way to restart it is to walk across the room for a power-cycle. It's not a problem with the files themselves.. they all play properly... except when I've looked through a directory with lots of files/subdirs. I suspect the lim might be using it's limited memory up with directory listings and finding that it doesn't have enough free when it tries to play the files. Does anyone else get the same problem? Does using Samba fix this one? It's annoying the hell out of me lately. If I unplug the USB cable the display comes back on. I want to have my PC permanently connected via USB to the LIM, so how can I get the HDMI output to work when the USB is connected? Cheers, Richard. dp70 06-05-08, 08:44 PM I don't think you can do that- when the PC USB connection is detected, the limHD switches to a USB slave mode. (Of course on my unit, the USB slave mode has never worked on ANY of my computers. I always get an error about the USB device malfunctioning.) sta 06-06-08, 04:46 AM yes, when connected to a PC the lim behaves just as an esternal HDD unit slurm 06-06-08, 08:50 AM I still don't see why the video output should need to be turned off though. Fecn 06-07-08, 06:06 AM Hello! But we have not had the problems you mentioned above when we use nfs server under windows ,so you may refer to http://www.gendvd.com/ to see How to set up NFS streaming to the limHD200i. Jackie Thanks Jackie, but NFS on windows is no solution for me - My windows machine lives in the office and gets switched off when I go home at night. Fecn 06-07-08, 06:07 AM I still don't see why the video output should need to be turned off though. It's not just the video output that gets switched off - It's everything... When you plug in the usb cable, the Lim switches off all the clever bits and just acts as a dumb USB hard disk. slurm 06-07-08, 06:22 AM It's not just the video output that gets switched off - It's everything... When you plug in the usb cable, the Lim switches off all the clever bits and just acts as a dumb USB hard disk. Well it doesn't turn off all clever bits as the software is still running fine in the background because if you remove the USB cable the display comes instantly back on and the software is still up and running where you leave it. Surely this is just some action taken in the firmware to simply turn off video output when usb is attached and if this is the case then surely this behavior can be changed? The reason why this is annoying for me is that I have a 15M USB cable (using active repeaters built in the cable) to connect my computer in one room to the LIM in my bedroom. I can then copy things without having to keep disconnecting and moving it to the room with the computer. The problem is that I have to remove the USB cable from the PC otherwise the LIM will have no TV output. Removing the USB cable from behind the computer all the time is a real pain and is going to put wear an tear on my USB port. The only other way around this would be to have a USB adapter or cable with an on/off switch but I can't find one anywhere. The only place I have found is here but it is discontinued : http://www.welovemacs.com/usbpoonsw.html and I'm not handy enough to make my own :( Cheers, Richard. av_noob 06-15-08, 01:08 PM Thats one long Chinese Festival!! I wonder what these same people who back then claimed Tomacro is promising and not bad at all, causing many people to make the purchase on wild promises and no actions at all, are saying today (It would interest me omly if these were to be excuses for personal attacks towards me for stating the truth about Tomacro which conflicted with their perfect dreams)... Probably nothing but lame responses like "i like it... it works fine for me"... are the only things that can be spoken by them to save a little dignity... Hate to say it but many could have listened better and looked at the truth... It all started around page 72 of this thread where we got fed up with the commercial posts of gendvd, unfunded positive reports and over the top positive reactions from several corners (who often turned out to be the resellers themselves launching these). Anyway... Tomacro can change... won't happen for the limHD200i though... We requested a sample of the new unit which will be sent for review in august. Make the math... The real problem (not sure why you guys afraid to recognize it) is with attitude toward customers and vendors. If customer suffered a single box issue, vendor usually had it tens or hundreds times more. Business attitude sucks at Tomacro, but device is just outcome of this business attitude. OBR No one should blame OBR indeed or other resellers for that matter, never the less, they are the ones that add the products and sell the products in their stores knowing it is not up to par. We did respond long time before you added the products so you knew our ideas and opinions... Let's be fair, company is to blame most but in the end resellers carry some responsibility as well... In fact, every LimHD200i user is perfectly in their rights to seek a solution. That's the responsibility that comes with adding unfinished expensive products and sell them... It's not as easy as blaming business attitude on Tomacro alone. Indirectly means you not done enough research or tested the product properly to see if it is worth selling. Lack of updates is not the only thing that showed the product is not ready and every update prooved they can't make progress either properly... The combination of resellers promoting the player (ab)using these forums was inadmittable, totally unexpected to even be allowed (guess admins have too much work) and so on... We seen a shameless display of some resellers and people in this thread hunting after sales no matter what...! That and the combination of attitude from Tomacro but also resellers, was the combination that failed from start to finish leading to be people being mislead it was good or could become anything more than junk... (and I don't mean OBR as I not came accross such posts from you myself). In fact, if you believe it is "junk" today while it has not changed over the last year even with the updates provided to enhance very few things, you just admitted you add junk to your store! (I'm sorry to put it this way...) If we had not blocked Tomacro (and caused no one to buy it by people we reach), we would have already taken such action long time ago... It's weird how you mention IO-DATA as also they have been blocked by us in Europe as "unrecommended" brand and so did we block several others in the same range of doing "selfish" business in the "sell and run" compartment and of some, you would not expect it until you get surprised after months as a customer... People watching the scene 24hrs / day are called biased because of making such statements against brands and used things working on Tomacro better than the competition as cheap excuses to make a poinr... I guess many seen now we was not biased but helpfull in our attempts to warn them... Does not change other products are imperfect too and a lot sometimes, but they do a lot better than others... It's all about "acceptable and unacceptable" labels fitted to the players... I hope Tomacro learns from this experience... We seen brands come back... and we need some "differences" in a market lead by NMT's and TVIX'es only but it takes a brand standing behind their products and willing to invest what it takes and some just can't do that, but it's worse when they not even "try" properly... And OBR... let's be real... It was "worse" than the others from the start!! The only thing it had a little lead in was MKV... It wasn't worse than others just does not fly here... It could not do half the things others could but just because it did MKV a bit better, many of you jumped to conclusions way too fast... http://www.mpcclub.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=292 obr 08-17-08, 10:33 AM I guess we supposed to be in defensive mode while I do not feel guilty :) Not quite sure this belongs to the forum, but believe some mechanics and facts below could be fascinating to some users/customers. OBR had in total 2 shipments of Tomacro (20 pcs each shipment) to "try" the market. First shipment disappeared within 2 weeks. Second took us almost 6 months. We did have huge internal debates after first shipment whether we should continue, but [fact you do not wish to acknowledge or ignore] _market_ dictates demand and resellers are just servants of you, the customer. More interesting facts. Tomacro was first and only company that agreed to provide spare parts (comparing to PH or Dvico that was huge advantage, since turn around of repairs was very quick) Also, the first shipment had about half of the units repaired this way or another (boards, plastics, front panel, top panel), while in second shipment we pressed Tomacro to test units and "only" 3 units were repaired from the second shipment. So far Tomacro was the most controversial product in our history and second shipment, despite low physical defect level, was sold by us at huge loss (check our eBay listing for as low as $60) Hi-Jack, you see world as black and white, but it is not. And, of course, I do not defend wicked resellers who continued advertising and pushing product after reading all reviews from you and others. I do not blame market for demand either :) Notice that few of my posts (check the history, please!) were about explaining how to make this device work or workarounds comparing to constant complains this does not work or that does not work or promises that it will be fixed in future (in fact, month after second shipment it became clear to us it will never be fixed, despite direct promise of Tomacro) This is the bitter salad in our internal kitchen :) Will this prevent us from selling similar stuff in future? So far we were lucky to sell only the best products (since name of the company - only best rated) based on customers reviews, but ... does happen :) Keep your good work on reviewing new products and together we can filter out products and companies that do not deserve to exist. obr No one should blame OBR indeed or other resellers for that matter, never the less, they are the ones that add the products and sell the products in their stores knowing it is not up to par. We did respond long time before you added the products so you knew our ideas and opinions... Let's be fair, company is to blame most but in the end resellers carry some responsibility as well... [read previous message for the full quote] [/url] Hi-Jack 08-17-08, 11:48 AM Well OBR, i think of you as one of the few with a decent mindset... As I said before, OBR is not to blame but a reseller can be expected to know and filter the products out... I know it is difficult as reviewer A states this and reviewer B states otherwise etc... Like you "only best rated" slogarn, we have "teaming 4 Entertainment" which means we stand as a block behind products we believe in or stand against them if we don't and it's up to the manufacturars to convince us and not just by promises... That and handling a "standard criteria" for products what they must be capable of before we even start the proces ensures manufacturars will return in preparing the products before going to market instead of afterwards as it is reality if the players don't sell enough, they won't invest and leaves behind customers... It goes without saying NMT's and TvIX, Ziova and others have numerous issues at the start too, but not in the same amount than Tomacro... Like I said, it's all about labels... acceptable or inacceptable... Anyway... Let's hope they make progress... I'm sure they can... everyone can... qz3fwd 08-17-08, 02:25 PM Well obr as a consumer you as a reseller do not have a teflon coat and cannot sherk off all responsibility as your above post seems to try to do. Any reseller as well as manufacturer will suffer from lack of consumer confidence by selling "junk". Consumers will feel ripped off. Resellers should know what they are selling and the "but I just sell it....." cop-out doesnt cut these days. I get burned by a company (reseller or manufacturer) and they lose me as a customer for life-plain and simple. BTW: I did not buy a Tarmco, but have been ripped off several times by CE companies-the names io-data, linksys, dlink, roku come to mind) obr 08-18-08, 09:11 PM I think if you got that impression, it's wrong. Let's move into positive move and here are few very specific suggestions that could increase your confidence and "punish" both - reseller and, indirectly, manufacturer: - RESEARCH the product you buy. I believe most people do. MPC and these forums are good place to start. There are tons of others (e.g. CNet, ZDNet etc.) which likely paid by manufacturers (or so it seems when you read them - they are almost always neutral-like even when put some critics) - VERIFY RETURN POLICY. Specifically, check if a company you are buying from allows 5-15-30 days returns for the products without restocking fee (more days is better) More and more companies do allow returns, so even you bought what you think is a junk, you can return it without loss to your pocket - VERIFY ONLINE STORE. Read what others say about the store. There are numerous forums discussion various resellers and there are specialized sites comparing and rating resellers and online stores - REMEMBER YOU ARE UNIQUE customer. What's write or wrong for you is not necessary right or wrong for another customers. I think this is the major point of confusion. For instance, if you don't use ethernet streaming and this functionality buggy in a particular device you buy, do you really care if everything else works perfectly? If everything works perfectly, but device is noisy while you are noise control freak, would you buy such device? We all different (though looks like we unified in dislike of limHD200i :) ) There simple steps above will help to increase your online shopping confidence. There are many stores with "grab and run" policy just like many manufacturers.
