20+ minutes is a crazy long time for the unit to be vulnerable. Even if they are using the slower NOR flash instead of NAND, it seems at least 5x slower than it should be.
If a limHD200i gets bricked due to the update process getting interrupted, is it possible to revive the unit using tftp or serial through the bootloader? I'd guess that the limHD may be using a modified version of the same "Flyduck" bootloader Sigma provided to other OEMs. Last summer, folks on the MediaGate MG35 firmware thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=576107&page=1&pp=30) did some really brilliant work starting around post 900, culminating in the discovery of the password to get into the bootloader and how to use it (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=8150591&&#post8150591). I wonder if any of this applies to the limHD?

oldpainless68 07-06-07, 03:05 AM OK...
MKV2TS version .80 is out tweaking my method (MkV2VFR > AVI)......it's still beta......but I've tested 28 samples...27 all in sync....720p and 1080p.... :D
Get version .80
http://ambamo.free.fr/temp/mp4/MKV2TS.rar
You'll need Elecard Xmuxer Pro Beta 2.5 (version .80 of MKV2TS fails to mux the final TS...at the moment, although I'm sure he'll fix this over the weekend)
Run you MKV through MKV2TS. It will fail on the 2nd graph.
Take the files it's created - audio_A1.mpa & video_VI.ts,
Open Xmuxer Pro, and mux the files to TS....job done.
K
Update - The link has now been updated to .81...and it sucks....so if anyone wants .80, let me know and I'll upload on rapidshare.

Well if .81 sucks.. Upload .80 for us.. xD I will be trying this method tonight.
Hey Kevin, I know the emphasis is on HD (as it should be!), but have you done much playback of DVD VOB/IFO and ISOs? Any navigation problems or issues with subtitles, switching audio tracks, etc.? Still waiting for my unit from Tomacro... hopefully it won't take much longer...

Let me know how you guys get on...and don't forget the whole CoreAVC for 1080p vs FFDshow for 720p thing....and AC3 vs DTS (DTS will need to be in an AVI container).....and don't forget if you have problems...read this thread, and this one too http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=869795

Mine does not show .iso files. I'm not sure if it should or not. I just started playing with mine lastnight. Although I did play some.VOB files and it worked great.
Wizziwig 07-06-07, 04:30 PM I'm curious what the maximum bitrate is over a network connection. The highest rate file I could find online is this:
http://www.w6rz.net/
Elephants Dream:
1080p@24.0, 40 Mbps CBR (with no zero stuffing) in a 48 Mbps Transport Stream
You will have to downoad all 12 parts, unzip, then combine them with this DOS command:
copy /b ed24p_00.ts+ed24p_01.ts+ed24p_02.ts+ed24p_03.ts+ed24p_04.ts+ ed24p_05.ts+ed24p_06.ts+ed24p_07.ts+ed24p_08.ts+ed24p_09.ts+ ed24p_10.ts+ed24p_11.ts ed24p.ts
If you have a Tvix, give it a try too.
Thanks.
P.S. Here is a link to the VC1 version of same clip at lower bitrate:

2007-07-05 21:59:05 City of Yantai Despatch from Sorting Center :)
So it's on the way. I have no idea how long it takes to get here.
I tried to download the latest FW from the lim website, but get a page error, so have to look figure that out. Anyone else with this problem?
The HTPC I built is for sale on ebay. It featured a Silverstone 7" LCD integrated touchscreen display which made it nicer in the HT area. I have a TVIX M4000 to keep me going for the mean time.
I plan to run the heck out of the limHD200i device with my PJ. Alot of fun.
Kevin, any idea how long the EMS shipping takes?
cheers,
I ordered my unit from GenDVD on Wednesday and it shipped yesterday. She was great with my few questions.
I'm still waiting for a response from GenDVD - I asked some questions. Tried to many media players (and other equipment) only to be burned by promises that never delivered. This product sounds promisng thus far, but before I take the plunge, I want some kind of guarantee. That, or very thorough reviews that involve streaming from NAS boxes, HD, DVD, etc.

Yes, a NAS is usually connected via Ethernet. It's a totally different connection type. So it's very important to test if it works just as fine. Some other media player boxes have problems achieving fluid playback over Ethernet.

Hello everyone.
Just finished reading/skimming through the past 26 pages :)
I have a 40" samsung LCD TV supporting 720p resolution.
So if I get this right, the limHD200i should cover all my needs, as long as I'm willing to convert .mkv files to .avi using oldpainless' method?

Well, if those needs are DiVX(+HD), TS (mpeg2HD, AVCHD, H.264HD etc), Mpeg etc etc etc....MKV>AVI if you have 720p MKV's that you want to play.

when using an external HDD through the USB interface, is it the HDD read performance which is the limiting factor, or is it the internal components? That is, is it worth spending money on a high performance external drive compared to a "cheap" one? Or won't there be a difference?
oldpainless68 07-07-07, 09:14 AM Your bootleneck is USB....but that's not an issue for HD playback. I've not had any performance issue via the USB interface.

When you have nearly 7TB of content, yes - and if you want to have one central location for your content to stream to different rooms, yes. Having 7TB of USB storage in the multiple areas I'd watch isn't cost effective.
A NAS is a must-have, and streaming from it is a necessity.

Just a question - what's the benefit of say a 7TB NAS, over 7 1TB USB drives under the USB host? (the reason for the question is that I don't have a NAS to test)
This is not one of my fortes, but I assume a NAS is just a box with a load of hard drives in that all connect to a central point inside the shell, and then has an ethernet connection? If that's the case, I assume, using the same shell, you could put a load of HD's each in a USB caddy (say a sata/ide usb caddy), use a usb splitter, and connect via the usb input of a media player?....or, as I sometimes do, have I missed the entire point of a NAS?

is it possible to watch ripped dvd's (IFO & VOB) from a NAS with subtitles?
Thanks

Go to www.infrant.com and look at the ReadyNAS NV - it'll explain everything.
Essentially a NAS removes having a PC in the mix, and allows it to be centrally located (i.e. not having to be in same room as a streamer). On top of that, you can't connect USB over long distances (nor does it make sense). Re-read my initial post above: having multiple Tomacro devices (theater, bedroom 1, bedroom 2), all pulling content from ONE location. It costs less to have, say, 4TB worth of data on a NAS device then it would be to have (using my example) 12TB (4TB x 3 USB devices) in each room. On top of that, as you add content, you'd have to do it three times.
And dragging a tall USB structure from room to room to watch content? We won't go there.
is it possible to watch ripped dvd's (IFO & VOB) from a NAS with subtitles?
Thanks
JAH
Should be no reason why - it's in the datastream. It's up to the capabilities of each box (Tvix, Tomacro) to make these work. I don't have a need, thus never tested it.
has dvd iso been added to the FW yet, or are they still working on that? Then again, having to convert the iso files to vob files etc isn't that much worse than copying all the files I guess.
20+ minutes is a crazy long time for the unit to be vulnerable. Even if they are using the slower NOR flash instead of NAND, it seems at least 5x slower than it should be.
I agree, that part sounds kinda bad. Even if you can fix the problem (if one was to occur), it sounds kinda messy having to go through all the hassle fixing it.

I managed to watch 95% of a (.mkv>.avi) movie over a wired network using a Samba share yesterday, without any network speed problems. The final 5% I watched from the local HDD when it just stopped playing over the network.
Looking at another (.mkv>.avi) file, it plays -every time- for just under 10 mins over the network, and then just drops me back to the LimHD menu, it plays through that point when playing from the HDD though.
Guess it's to do with the encoding somehow?

Over the Samba network the LimHD only reads the file-size as a 32 bit value causing it problems with run-length (i.e. stopping when it thinks it's ran out of file!).
Decimal size LimHD over Samba connection LimHD HDD
Movie1: 4,623,976,448 313.8 MB
Movie2: 4,693,753,286 380.3 MB 4.4 GB
Movie3: 8,542,295,149 -46522.9..
Movie4: 7,071,084,970 (nothing shown) 6.6 GB
To take Movie2 as an example:
4,693,753,286 equals 0x117C4FDC6 (in hexadecimal)
If you read only the lower 8 bytes(32 bit) (0x17C4FDC6) and convert to decimal (MB) you get
0x17C4FDC6 = 398785990. 398785990 divide by 1048576 = 380.3119564056396484375...so, the unit sees 380.3 MB as the size.
This movie only plays for ~10 minutes over the network but plays fine from the HDD, the LimHD GUI shows the correct value when looking at the same file on the HDD.
So I guess we need the velue to be read as a 64 bit value just as it appears to be when reading the HDD.
@Jackie: Would you let me know when this has been fixed?

It seems to play only two of the 5.1 channels rather than downmixing them to 2

Does the LimHD support NFS network shares? Maybe that supports 64-bit file access. Besides the file size problem, how is the quality of network playback compared to local hard drive? What's the maximum bitrate is can handle?
@Wizziwig
>Does the LimHD support NFS network shares?
Yes it supports both NFS & SMB, I only have a Samba share on my LSPro though.
>Maybe that supports 64-bit file access.
I think the problem will be with the FW requiring a declared 64 bit integer in the code somewhere.
>Besides the file size problem, how is the quality of network playback compared to local hard drive?
There is no perceived difference between HDD/Network that I notice.
>What's the maximum bitrate is can handle?
Not sure how I’d measure for that, if you give me some info. I’ll test for it.
According to this page (http://www.suse.de/~aj/linux_lfs.html), the 4 GB limit is inherent to the basic SMB protocol (but it can be overcome through an extension). This page (http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/howto-access-files-greater-than-2gb-samba/) says to try adding the lfs mount option when the limHD mounts the SMB filesystem (something the limHD firmware would need to do, of course, and with LFS support included in the Linux kernel etc.). Another interesting tidbit on the first page is that NFSv2 has a 2GB filesize limit while NFSv3's limit is 8EB. So if anyone experiments with feeding the limHD over NFS, be sure to use v3.

http://www.raidsonic.de/en/pages/search/search_list.php?we_objectID=4828&pid=0
Ordered one of these (as well as an internal one). Love the idea of not having a caddie. This will go well in my setup which already consist of a NAS, and various external drives (USB, FW, and now eSATA as well).
This one have USB also so it could be a nice addendum to the Lim200 or a tvix. NO fan either ;)
oldpainless68 07-09-07, 06:44 AM I still play a LD now and then just to see how much have changed the last few years. And its so fun to show my friends these 12" silver platters ;)
M.
I got rid of my 925 and LD collection a few years ago. What's it like watching it now after watching HD?

oldpainless68 07-09-07, 09:11 AM MKV2TS...version .84 is out, it seems to work with 720p and 1080p MKV with AC3...grab it before the version changes:
http://ambamo.free.fr/temp/mp4/MKV2TS.rar
Now, if someone could just ask (in French) if there is a way to leave the DTS track and mux that in.......???!!!
K
UPDATE: The progam will tranzcode DTS into AC3, but the aften and Tranzocode versions that are included are buggy. So do a search for the latest versions, delete the ones in the MKV2TS folder and replace with the new ones...It works.
Friendship Tip :
Please refrain from downloading the firmware upgrade arbitrarily from some non-official tomacro Chinese website because many of them are not the real official version, but testing version, such as 0702, 0704 version. so please do not use these versions to update, for the use of test versions of the escalation is likely to cause damage to the machine. At present, the latest official version is 0707. You can go to our website http://www.gendvd.com/service.asp#software. or http://www.tomacro.com/ .
During the process you must escalate according to the following steps to upgrade.
Specific ways :
1. Put update folder on the hard drive built-in IDE first partition
2. implement SETUP \ BOOT; After TV screen turning black, turn off the machine and reset it after 5 seconds
http://www.hdav.com.cn/images/update1.jpg
3. implement SETUP \ application; about 25 minutes later the TV screen turns black,turn off the machine, 5 seconds after boot again;

http://www.hdav.com.cn/images/update3.jpg
4.implement SETUP \ application BAK .

now,all upgrade is completed ; in the subsequent process of escalation , if you fail to escalate due to power outages and other unexpected factors ,you need to press the OK button until all VFD lights are bright, then OK button can be loosened;

For me the .mkv->.avi method you posted earlier has been the most successful -and quickest-.

I posted links to some high bitrate files a few pages back (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=10966269&&#post10966269). One of the samples is MPEG2 at 48 Mbps. If it can handle that, then the network should be fast enough for anything you will find in the real world. I also included a link to the VC1 version which is 10-25 Mbps. If you could please test those from HD and Network, that would be great. Thanks.

Are you just repeating what I asked ?:)
"The limHD200i features two USB2.0 host ports for instant access to music, photos, and videos stored on external removable Mass Storage Devices which include external USB HDDs, USB thumbdisks, etc."
Most likely it can not play original.
The Dueple 350D has DVD drive, and the CD36HD has deCSS capabilities, but is not out yet.
Just looking at options.

On the TVIX 4100sh, I use a USB dvd-rom drive all the time..
It DOES NOT play orig dvd's that have copy protection, only backup copies I make..
Very useful for playing TS files from that I may have on DVD..
Can not replace regular DVD player, too bad !
muad'dib 07-09-07, 11:32 PM Can not replace regular DVD player, too bad !
There is another option...
You can steam you orig. dvd from your computer dvd-rom drive..
You have to run a program on computer that breaks the protection as drive is being looked at.. I think one of the programs is "anydvd"
From this, you can stream the dvd to the media server, while computer breaks the protection..

Yeah, those are acceptable options to some, so that's fine. Not for me though :) And AnyDVD is Windows only, and you'd have to put the DVD into your PC, which may or may not be in the same room. But anyway.

conker2007 07-10-07, 10:05 AM TOMACRO has released a beta version: build1.60beta-070710
http://www.tomacro.com/chinese/Archive/update_beta_070710.rar
The beta070710 modified some audio output mode setting:
Case1 - using decoder of AV receiver(Amp.):
1) play video files with DTS or AC3(DD5.1) audio tracks, use 'Encoded Digital'+'5.1 channel' setting;
2) play video files with other audio tracks, use 'DPCM'+'5.1 channel' setting.
Case2 - using HDMI embeded audio or analog output(R+L):
use 'DPCM'+'2 channel' setting.
You can upgrade to version: build1.60beta-070710 directly.
Ok, after a short night of tests, I have the following comments:
1. Firmware that shipped with my unit had display issues. Upgrading to 070704 AND changing the video setting from EDID to 720p fixed this.
2. Unit has buttons on top for navigation. 3/4 of my jog buttons don't work. Not a show stopper as I always use the remote.
3. Unit will not detect my Western Digital 250GB 2.5" hard drive. It does detect my 4GB memory stick. I plan to try out some other USB drives today. Bummer since all my data is on the 250GB so it limited my testing last night.
4. Played a blu-ray title I put on the internal drive no problem.
5. Played some HD home movies no problem.
6. Played a standard DVD no problem, BUT, all I can see in the navagation is the VOB's. I prefer to select the IFO. Anyone else able to play the IFO?
cheers,

Right...sorry, we are getting our wires crossed....a true WMV-HD VC1 looks like this:
Video #0
Codec : VC-1
Codec/Info : Microsoft
Bit rate : 3951 Kbps
Width : 1280 pixels
Height : 544 pixels
Aspect ratio : 2.35
Audio #0
Codec : WMA3
Codec/Info : Windows Media Audio 3
Bit rate : 384 Kbps
Channel(s) : 6 channels
Sampling rate : 48 KHz
Find a WMV-HD file like this....if you don't have one, try a google for content (Microsoft do a showcase site for downloading clips)
What the firmware needs to do is pick the WMA3 flag up, and if it's 6 channel, encode to DD 5.1 (as the 360 does).....hopefully, Tomacro are close to putting this in...

Only a few Blu-Ray titles would ever go that high anyway. I'll try to find some more samples at lower (maybe 30-40 Mbs) and post links here.
Upgraded to FW 707. No problems.
After testing a few USB hard drives, it appears that they do work but are not getting enough power from the USB ports from the unit. Typically the drive won't even spin up when that's the case, but these do. I now can access the Western Digital 250GB 2.5" drive using a dual USB cord (extra USB for power).

All of my 250> usb drives have their own psu's...

Errr, the USB drives not getting enough power is kinda bad :/ Shouldn't that be easy to fix tho? in terms of hardware upgrade.

Maybe just me, but wouldn't powering a 250gig+ usb hard drive via the Lim's USB ports put stress on the Lim's own psu?

Portable 2.5" hard drives are intended to use USB power. In most cases this works out fine and they draw very little energy. The WD 250 is currently the largest 2.5" and very handy to carry around. No brick to plug in. The TVIX powers it just fine with one usb cord as well as my laptop. Many of these drives come with a split cord for extra power if needed. The WD doesnt come with this type of cable as they expect it should work, but i had other cables from other drives that had the split. The split cable works fine but takes up both ports.
Another comment. I tried to play a M2TS stream from a BD disc last night. One I had played fine the other day. The one I tried to play last night both from USB or Internal HDD would play for about 10-12 seconds and then fall behind. Once it does that, the audio drops out and the frames stutter indefinately.

What was the codec for the BD disc that you used: MPEG2, MPEG4, VC1?

oldpainless68 07-11-07, 10:15 AM Ok....just loaded up firmware version 0707.....
Tests for Picture:
Tomacro and GenDVD have listened, and not only removed any trace of image shimming, they have gone one better and improved the image quality even more (which I didn't think was possible!!). This applies to both 720p and 1080p sources (TS, AVI, WMV-HD etc)
Just Awesome (thanks Jackie for twisting Tomacro's arm for me!!) You have to see it to believe it.
Tests for Sound:
The 0707 is now picking up the AC3 and DTS flag in any file....so the MKV2VFR>AVI method I've posted now works fantastic!! (once again, thanks Jackie!!)
I can also confirm that the MKV to TS (latest MKV2TS files (go get them if you haven't already - in the x.264 conversion thread..or in this thread a page or two back)) work's perfect!!!....All 720p perfect....and I've even managed a couple of 1080p!!!! (just a tip, if you do an MKV2TS and it's outta sync, then try the MKV2VFR AVI)
More test results (inc network and BD) tomorrow.

Good news!! :)
As for 720p conversions..
Also good news...
I was able to convert most of mine, but only 3 or 4 720 MKV's did not convert proper..
They had perfect sync, :) but, every 30-50 seconds, I get a frozen video frame, but sound keeps going.. This is the same error I have when converting most 1080p stuff...
Strange, as most of my 720p MKV's worked perfect, and wondering why not those...
Oh well, maybe in next update that will be fixed...
Just awesome so far...

So, in rank order...these are my drivers:
1 - Image and sound quality are King
1.a - Function - FF/RR etc
2 - HD-DVD/BD and highest bitrate formats (M2TS etc)
3 - playback via network (SMB/NFS) network
4 - playback via NAS
4 - GUI
5 - Nice to have's....DVD ISO etc
Lastly, I would add MKV native playback at 1.b, but this seems to be comming almost a non issue now.

>Wizziwig:"Does the LimHD support NFS network shares? Maybe that supports 64-bit file access."
I installed NFS onto a linux box and the LimHD now shows proper 64 bit file access.
The files display on the LimHD GUI with the correct file-size....unfortunately I can't get them to play -just freezes the unit-, (maybe something to do with my lack of linux knowledge in setting it up)
Has anyone got a NFS share working yet?

I am guessing that, just like the tvix 4100, you are able to play MPEG2 codec movies, but blu ray rips encoded as MPEG4 or VC-1 don't stand up. I have tried with countless MPEG4 and VC-1 rips with the Tvix 4100 but none will play-all studder and sound cuts in and out, only MPEG2 encoded rips work. If there is anyone out there that has had success with MPEG4 or VC-1 blu ray rips let the rest of us know.

Hi,
I am referring to this movie file:
Video #0
Codec : AVC
Codec/Info : MPEG-4 AVC
Codec profile : High@L4.1
Width : 1920 pixels
Height : 1088 pixels

Internal HDD at 720p HDMI, FW707. Plays for about 10 seconds and then pauses/play/pauses/play. It can't keep up with it. Playing the same file from the USB HDD only gets about 5-6 seconds before stuttering. So it seems to support the codec but not fast enough to play it?
Dude787 07-11-07, 04:16 PM Hi folks
I have got one of these Limhd200i media players and I have to say the playback quality is very good.
As far as networks etc go - I am a noob so forgive my ignorance.
Can you please tell how you have connected your player for streaming from a PC as I
am stuck on this and the English manual I have read is confusing. I have windows vista and am thinking that it (vista) may be the problem. I am using a router . thanks in advance for any advice!
I'm probably not the one to answer your question Dude -stumbling about with neworks myself ATM-.
Best that I describe how I have it set up on XP and leave it to you to make the changes on Vista and your network specifics. On my XP box I made a folder in the root of drive c: called 'samba' (no quotes, and could be any name I suppose)
Set this folder as a shared folder to allow other users on the network to view it.
Determine the IP address of your router
Mine is 192.168.1.1 with a netmask of 255.255.255.0
I give my PC a static address which is 192.168.1.16
On the LimHD I set it for a static IP of 192.168.1.20 and set up the Samba share to read //192.168.1.16/samba
Now anything in the samba folder will be seen from the LimHD.
Remember however that there is a problem with the Samba part of the LimHD (as mentioned a couple of pages ago), in that it does not report the correct file size and subsequently does not play the full file if it's greater than 2 gig.
oldpain -
Are you able to play that Microsoft file? My LimHD will play it but locks up and gets choppy.
Thanks,
Enrique

defsquad 07-11-07, 10:33 PM phew, i tried to find where it says there is a file size limit to streaming media over samba. so you are positive that there is a 2 gig file size limit? most of my 720p h264 mkv's are well over 3-4 gig. does this mean i won't be able to stream those files with this device? i recently purchased an appletv thinking that the hacks i performed would allow it, but the device just isn't powerful enough, even over a wired connection. please help; i really want a media streamer that can support 720p h.264 enabled mkv's. thanks!
oldpainless68 07-12-07, 03:47 AM Ok......1080p MKV to 1080p TS. I did an entire movie and 6 clips for playback on the LimHD...
Latest working MKV2TS with all the corrected files here:
http://rapidshare.com/files/42472904/MKV2TS12jultamwithcorrectfiles.rar.html
(Goto the tools folders and run the unreg.bat, DONT run the reg.bat....Then just fire up MKV2TS and give it a try...)
RESULTS:
All files play and the audio is in sync. However, there is a slight picture breakup now and again.
Jackie, I'll upload a couple of sample 1080pMKV>TS files to the FTP.....could you have Tomacro take a look at them...for PC playback PowerDVD BD edition and the CoreAVC pluging works perfect. They will see that the files play fine on a PC, but some issues on the LimHD. I don't think it's anything too difficult for them to sort...

Every single 720p MKV (120) that I have tested can be made to play on the LimHD, in full audio/video sync.
Try the MKV2TS method (I've posted the latest version, and corrected the DTS>AC3 files again)
If, you have a movie that is not in sync (for me, so far about 1 in 12) then use the MKV2VFR>AVI method.

@defsquad,
It seems to be the way that Samba is implemented on the LimHD that is the problem. Mark pointed to a couple of links earlier that probably applies to the way they have implemented Samba on the box.
When I view the files from other Linux boxes I see the correct file sizes. I am sure that the software guys will correct the issue on the LimHD soon though.
If you can get the NFS share working that at least shows the correct file sizes on the LimHD, but for me I can't get that to play files over the network, -that could be down to the way I have it set up on a small Linux box though, I'm still playing with that-.
oldpainless was going to test some network stuff as well, so we'll see what he comes up. Anyone else with a networked LimHD should chime in with their experience too.
oldpainless68 07-12-07, 05:55 AM Hi,
I am referring to this movie file:
Video #0
Codec : AVC
Codec/Info : MPEG-4 AVC
Codec profile : High@L4.1
Width : 1920 pixels
Height : 1088 pixels
Aspect ratio : 16/9
PixelAspectRatio : 1.000
DisplayAspectRatio : 1.765
Internal HDD at 720p HDMI, FW707. Plays for about 10 seconds and then pauses/play/pauses/play. It can't keep up with it. Playing the same file from the USB HDD only gets about 5-6 seconds before stuttering. So it seems to support the codec but not fast enough to play it?
Ok, I've run a few tests, and yes some AVC's seem to pause in 0707 (0517 played them fine). This has been reported to Jackie and Tomacro - Based on experience, It won't take them long to sort.

oldpainless68 07-12-07, 06:00 AM Hi folks
I have got one of these Limhd200i media players and I have to say the playback quality is very good.
As far as networks etc go - I am a noob so forgive my ignorance.
Can you please tell how you have connected your player for streaming from a PC as I
am stuck on this and the English manual I have read is confusing. I have windows vista and am thinking that it (vista) may be the problem. I am using a router . thanks in advance for any advice!
Playback via SMB is in no no in 0707, it's getting there, but it's not there yet. This has been reported to Jackie and Tomacro.

Diewrecked 07-12-07, 07:22 AM Afternoon all,
Not sure if this is the place to be asking these questions or if I should open a new thread for them, I'm sure you'll let me know if I'm wrong!
I'm looking to replace my big, bulky and noisy MCE PC with a nice quiet Media streamer. All it needs to do is play DIVX, XVID, VOB and MPG video, WAV and MP3 audio (FLAC would be nice but not essential), JPG and BMP stills (slideshow nice but not essential) - same as my old MCE box. For futureproofing it'd be nice if it could play BluRay/DVD HD rips but again is not a dealbreaker. Oh and HDMI out.
What IS a dealbreaker is that it (a) works well wirelessly, (b) can stream from a 2Tb NAS and (c) keeps the same folder structure as is set up on the NAS (I've split my movies into genres).
My top three solutions are (in descending order), the LimHD200i, the NetGear EVA8000 and the Kiss DP-1600. The specs for all seem (note *seem*) almost identical. The only reason the Kiss is there is because it has a DVD player but I'm not fussed with that. The EVA8000 was my favourite until I saw the LimHD200i. Now that is SERIOUSLY sexy!! And my first choice by a mile simply due to the aesthetics. However I need to be sure it can do what I need it to.
So - after the long and rambling scene-setter, my questions:
1. As a UK resident is there anywhere in the UK even selling them? I note from this thread that OldPainless68 got his imported from the US but that concerns me slightly (only slightly) with regard to shipping and aftercare (like if it goes bang and needs to be returned). Given OldPainless68 is fine I assume it works on a 240V supply and a PAL screen.
2. There is nothing in the spec about wifi. What sort of wifi adapters are you guys attaching this box to to make it work and how does it perform? Also what specific routers are you using and how do different ones affect performance?
3. Is it OK streaming from a NAS wirelessly, and does it see the folder structure or do you need to set up a database?
Many thanks in advance for your help, guys.
Cheers
Jon

lundman 07-12-07, 07:24 AM Hmm well regarding DVD, I downloaded the 0707 update, and its plain romfs, so mounted it and took a look. Seems to be something called Busybox, with curacao. So could be quite tempting to buy one anyway, and attempt to add libdvdread. Might perhaps have been easier if there was a kernel with it built in, but anyway, could be a fun project. There is already a telnetd in there if one wanted to just enable logins.

Plays all of the above with no problems (but not FLAC)

There's no WIFI Built in I'm afraid, and I've no experiance of NAS, so cant help there.

I bought mine from GenDVD (china), and I can vouch for the service she provides. Works with 240v and PAL or NTSC.

Not useing WIFI, and at the moment, SMB has a few bugs that Tomacro are tweaking.

Like I said, I dont have a NAS, not sure if any of the other LimHD owners have?
What this player does really well, is high bitrate HD video in virtually container, and the picture quality is just simply awesome...so, I guess what I'm really saying is if your after one of the best HD players money can buy, this is it.
Hope that helps...

Did you get the 1080p MKV to TS sample?
K
I might have missunderstood something, but what is the difference between using the .mkv --> .avi method, and the .mkv to TS method? Is there any difference quality wise, or in the conversion process that makes the TS method preferable? For 720p that is.

Nope...there's no difference in quality (as all we are doing is remuxing into a different container), but there are some MKV's that are encoded VFR, in which case MKV2TS will have problems, and there are some files that are encoded CFR, in which case MKV2VFR>AVI will have problems. So, most MKV's are encode CFR, so MKV2TS works fine, but, for those that don't, it's because it been encoded VFR, so you need to use the MKV2VFR>AVI method.
Hope that helps..

dobeman 07-12-07, 07:04 PM Just to make sure before I get one of these, a few questions (I know some of this has been answered to some extent in other threads, but I would like if possible to get all the answers here):
1) Does this unit handle ALL BLU RAY RIPS (VC-1, mpeg4, mpeg2)?
2) Can it handle DTS HD Master Audio (found on all fox blu rays)
3) Can it handle HD DVD rips (.evo files)?
4) Does it support high bit rate transfer over a LAN?

Did you guys e-mail Maggie? @ maggie [info002@tomacro.com]
lundman 07-12-07, 11:02 PM I mailed Tomacro about 10 days ago, then saw the mail was stuck in the mailq. Their qmail host is very strange, I can not reach it from half the work machines, and from the machines I can reach it from, half the time it blocks, and half the time it works.
They had the same problems mailing me back, eventually they used hotmail to do so. Seems they are aware that they are having mail problems though.
I was surprised they mailed me back with all that hassle, but they did.

As for the reseller in Japan, why don't try yourself, dear? LOL.
Samples ordered from us will be delivered promptly, never like our email box again.
Have a cool day!

I am certain I could sell these on auctions in Japan, but I don't have money spare enough to buy and try :)
But the devices would really need to be able to switch to Japanese in the menus, which I do not think they have.
Having mounted the firmware, I could add it myself to curacao, but well.. there are more things to do out there, like watch movies :)

tschang13 07-13-07, 07:52 AM Kevin,
I know this is a dumb question, but can u post detailed instructions on how to convert 720p MKV to TS using MKV2TS? (I've seen your instructions for MKV to AVI using MKV2VFR). Want to try to convert a few MKV files to TS to do some testing. (I did see the download link for latest MKV2TS version 0.84). Thanks.
oldpainless68 07-13-07, 08:32 AM Ok...
Download the latest mkv2ts that I've posted....
1 Unzip
2 double click _elecard_un_filter.bat in MKV2TS\tools\filter-mkv2ts
3 double click MKV2TS.exe in MKV2TS
4 click MKV Video folder button (top left)
5 locate your MKV and select
6 press convert
7 Make a coffee/tea and 30-45 minutes later.......
8 Play your new TS file....

The process is speeded up as it connects both audio and video in the 1st graph - basically removing a mux and remux cycle.
Run the unreg.bat in tool\filters and away you go....

I have seen this before, but can anyone who has a unit actually verify my questions above. My Tvix 4100 is "supposed" to support MPEG4 and VC-1, but in terms of blu rips it just can't handle them. So anyone who has tried these please verify. Or I can upload a sample, but how do I do that exactly.
1) How do I chop a piece of the file off?
2) Where do I upload it to?

Just to make sure before I get one of these, a few questions (I know some of this has been answered to some extent in other threads, but I would like if possible to get all the answers here):
1) Does this unit handle ALL BLU RAY RIPS (VC-1, mpeg4, mpeg2)?
Yes...as so far that I have found
2) Can it handle DTS HD Master Audio (found on all fox blu rays)
Dont know...but I've tried a few that media info reports as AC3, the LimHD picks up as DTS, so suspect so.
3) Can it handle HD DVD rips (.evo files)?
Dont know....upload a file and I'll test it
4) Does it support high bit rate transfer over a LAN?
No, not yet, but SMB/NFS is still being tweaked, I think they will get there
5) I am in the US, anyone know approximately how long it would take to get the unit, I am guessing I have to get it from GenDVd in China?
Nope, im UK
I currently have the Tvix 4100 and it plays most of what I have but would like to get a unit that can "play it all, and not interested in MKV". Tvix is able to stream at high bit rates over the LAN, but can't play many of the blu ray rips and no .evo files.
Hope that helps

Keep in mind that Dvico promised to implement the same functionality/performance as limHD has.
So, if you find such a file then don't hesitate to open a ticket in their support database.
I know that NetGear with the same hardware already supports basic MKV, so let's see how others catch up.
Also, I think that Tomacro can make you sure that they will support everything others do.
Anyone know what shipping company GenDVD uses to shipout the Lim2000? I ordered mine and they sent me a tracking number but I dont know which company they used.

The limHD200i supports the following popular Media formats:
1) Video formats:
DVD .ISO & .VOB
Can someone confirm that the unit does indeed play DVD ISOs? I've heard conflicting information regarding this.
Jackie,
I sent you a copy of my reply to Fan Zhang.

yea! I get it.
Anyone know if these are available at retail outlets in China? I'm going to be in Beijing next month and would like to seek one out if they are.

Many thanks...let me know Monday, as I think all that's required for the 1080p MKV to TS to work proberly is a simple (ish) firmware tweak....based on 0707
The 1080p MKV to TS file's play and are in perfect audio/video sync, but I get minor image shudder and minor image breakup...so should be an easy fix IMO.

it's basically a network storage supporting media streaming, someone on the TViX HD thread is also asking for the possibility to work, as far as I know the HP works with DLink DSM-520 HD media player.

Isn't it a bit misleading for gendvd to say "The limHD200i supports the following popular Media formats:" and list DVD ISO when apparently it doesn't support it? What other formats in post #943 does it not actually support? I'm just trying to get a clear picture of what it definitely plays and what it doesn't play. I'm not really interested in "wishlist" features that Tomacro may add at a later date. Also, when you say VOB do you mean IFO/VOB or just plain VOB files?

What is the best playable HD format type for this unit?
oldpainless68 07-15-07, 03:14 AM What is the best playable HD format type for this unit?
Not sure really what you mean....I've had MPEG2 upto 65mbps, AVC upto 40mbps etc...it plays VC1, and just about anything .....1080p or 720p. TS, AVI, DivX, M2TS etc........
There still some tweaking to be done, which IS being done....so, happy bunny.
What I mean is what is the best file type to give you the best resolution?
What software do you use to convert to MPEG 2, AVC and VC-1? I am having a hard time finding a good software program.

Ok, your talking about a container.....makes no difference to the quality. Its the video and audio file that dictate the image and sound quality....some containers allow different combinations. Probably at the moment, and MKV container is the most flexiable, but no players support level 5.1 (however, I've posted two methods for 720p MKV's to TS or AVI so they play on the LimHD, and we are working on 1080p MKV to TS at the moment).
So, AVI, TS, M2TS can all hold AC3, DTS, MPEG-2/1, VC1, H.264, AVC etc at either 720p or 1080p.
Firstly, why convert?....tell me what the file types are and I'll tell you if they will play on the LimHD......converting is a last resort as you ALWAYS lose quality.
Hope that helps.

Further to my being unable to play files over a NFS network yet being able to see them on the LimHD GUI; it turns out that because I had the server unit connected via a 100/1000 switch, even while I had the server set to the lowest MTU value, it caused me problems.
Setting it up so that both server/LimHD connections fed into my 10/100 router allows me to see and play the files over a NFS connection now, and the correct file sizes are picked up by the LimHD in NFS mode.
Some useful tips on optimizing NFS performance (http://nfs.sourceforge.net/nfs-howto/ar01s05.html)...
Jomomma 07-15-07, 07:06 PM I have not seen mentioned whether or not the limHD200i has a browser, or works with the web-based media streaming. I know the Syabas browser ain't full featured, but with so many people out there using OXLY ~BOX, OpenShowcenter, and other similar backends, it works pretty well. Particularly people who would like a drop-in replacement for a Pinnacle of Buffalo that don't do h.264 and hidef. The other advantage is that you can do your own user interface for your media using PHP and Apache, or customize FOSS software like OpenShowCenter.
Am I the only one who just wants a drop-in replacement for a Pinnacle Show Center type box that will work with my existing server, but adds all the additional codecs and containers?
Upload a sample onto rapidshare and I'll download and test for you....I've tried mov files and all seems ok...but to make double sure, I'll test what you upload...

Configuration Note of limHD200i NFS:
NFS (Network File System) is a mechanism that connects the division (directory) of the remote host to the local system by the network. Users can operate the Division (directory) of the remote host through the network file system support, in the local system like operate the local branch.
The realization of Linux NFS environment includes two aspects: First, the Linux server NFS server support; 2 the goal system limHD200i’s NFS client support.
1. The configurations of Linux NFS server
Login in Linux as root, edit the shared directory configuration file under / etc directory, and pointing to the shared directory and its competence and so on. Implement the following documents / etc / exports: # vi / etc / exports
In the document, insert the following : / home / user / nfs 192.168 .*.* (rw, sync, no_root_squash) / / user as linux user directory, and user need to build nfs folder under user directory, then save and withdrawal.
The Added contents indicates : Allow ip address range visit / home / work directory in 192.168 .*.* computer as reading and writing authority .
/ Home / user / nfs are also known as the server output shared directory.
The parameters meaning within the brackets is described as follows:
rw : read / write access, the parameter of read-only authority is ro; Sync : you can also use async to write data into memory and hard disk Synchronously, at this time the data will be saved temporarily in memory and immediately be written in the hard disk.
No_root_squash : NFS server shared directory user attributes, If the user is root, then this directory has root privileges.
Then use the following command to start the port mapping :
# / etc / rc.d / init.d / portmap start
Finally start NFS services performing the following orders, at this time NFS will activate daemons, and then started listening Client's request :
# /etc/rc.d/init.d/nfs start
Users also can restart Linux server, automatically activate the NFS services.
After the NFS server is started, also you need to examine firewall settings of the Linux server (generally you need close firewall services) ensure that you do not shield NFS using port and the mainframe which allows communications, mainly checks Linux server iptables, ipchains options’ establishment and / etc / hosts.deny and / etc / hosts.allow document.
We firstly do loop testing for NFS server in the Linux server in order to verify whether the shared directory can be visited. Run the following order in Linux server: # mount - t nfs 192.168.18.106 :
/ home / user / nfs / mnt / nfs / / you need to build nfs directory in mnt
# ls / mnt
Orders will mount NFS export shared directory 0f Linux server to / mnt directory, so if NFS normally works, you are able to see the contents of / home / user / nfs shared directory in / mnt directory.
2, limHD200i-configuration
In the network configuration options NFS configuration, the screen will pop up a soft keyboard, installed Linux servers Ip and shared directory, such as : "192.168.18.106 : / home / user / nfs. "
You can delete the former IP and its path through selecting Back in the screen, you can input IP addresses and path through selecting numbers or alphabets from top to bottom, then press enter to set withdrawal.
Then select Settings static IP or DHCP dynamic to get IP then reboot the system, and choose network NFS on the main interface in the access to share the film on net.
Screen shots will be available soon.

Ok Guys....this is where I need YOUR help....this sounds like mar's talk to me....
What do I need and how do I setup NFS on WinXP?
I have been trying ProNFS server...
I have selected the mounts:
c:\documents and settings\k\my documents\home\nfs
I have set it to export and added a NFS user as the LimHD's Ip addy: 192.168.1.66 with no password needed.
Back to the the LimHD, gave it a fixed IP 192.168.1.66 (checked with my router, and it shows the LimHD as on the network with that IP)
Still on the Lim, in the NFS settings, gave it the network path 192.168.X.XX:/NFS
Then reboot....
To check the IP side of things, I used CMD\Ping 192.168.1.66.....all is well no packet losses etc...
Back to the LimHD.....entered the NFS share......and the Lim sees no files or folders...
Back to PC....check NFS server, and I can see 192.168.1.66 did connect...
What I'm I doing wrong or not doing here....

Why don't you check the Tvix 4100 thread? Many people there use NFS in XP. You could probably even use the Tvix supplied NFS application with your LimHD - it's limited but sounds easy to use/setup.
digitalkid2 07-16-07, 04:56 PM There used to be a pop-up on the gendv.com site that allowed you to purchase the limhd200i for $449 but that pop-up appears to be missing. What is the current price?
