I dug up Warner's 1999 DVD today, to say it looks terrible is an understatement. I bet it could be made to look great on HD DVD.

You might be well in the minority waiting for this release. I highly recommend One Night at McCool's instead, the reference is at the end.

If I recall on one of the HTF Warner Chats, this is being remastered for 2008 rerelease

Man, I have to say that I'm baffled at some the movies that people want in HD. Here I find myself wanting what I consider the 'big' and 'obvious' titles... The Alien Series, Star Wars Series, Lord of the Rings Extended Edition, Titanic, etc. Films that can and will take full advantage of 1080p. And then I see posts of people asking about movies like 'Falling Down' and 'Fight Club'. Not to impune people who actually like these two films. But in my opinion those types of movies will receive no obvious benefit or improvement in subsequent viewings from higher resolution. Yes, yes. I know. ALL films will benefit from 1080p. But my point is, is that I believe some films are a 'no brainer' when it comes to demanding a more immediate 1080p release, where others are... well... no big whoop in my book. At least not until the HD formats are a few years older.

Ain't that the truth.

Although I enjoy the Alien, Star Wars & LOTR films, I think that Falling Down is much more rewatchable than those films. Also, as the OP mentioned, its SD dvd is far from being up to even 480p standards. It's all really subjective, though, and there's really not much point in posting to argue against Falling Down in HD, especially since its release in no way affects the releases of the films you mentioned. I just hope it would be economically viable.

Yeah, though Falling Down is actually on the "fringe" of my general film tastes.

My DVD collection (http://www.dvdaficionado.com/dvds.html?id=sehnzeleid) reflects this. All those in my DVD collection I want in HD. I want them the closet they can look to actual projected film, warts and all.

The majority of the major Hollowood films will come to HD sooner or later (and probably be treated right), but when the "minors" or the "unknowns" come to HD and are treated right, it's time to break out the champagne in my household.

I agree with live4ten, most of "big" Hollywood stuff I've bought either sits collecting dust for God only knows how long or is in a Rubbermaid bin in my attic. Not saying they're bad, it's just their kinda boring to me usually. :o

Also, what the about The Searchers on HD DVD and BD? Simply incredible picture quality, and I'm betting most of the SW and LOTR fanatics never dreamed that film could look that damn good.

One of the reasons I love HD-DVD is they aren't just releasing the big blockbuster geek titles. Sure, I bought Matrix Trilogy today, but I also bought Smokey and the Bandit and Caddyshack. HD-DVD's got a great mix of all genres, and I definitely think they should keep it up.

Put me down as waiting for Falling Down too!

I want movies put in HD that I want to watch more often, and Falling Down is one of those movies. Sure, it wasn't a huge blockbuster, but it was a very well done movie.

I'll take good movies in HD over crap movies that have a lot of eye candy and loud booms any day.

Higher resolution is akin to higher fidelity. It breaks down the veils that seperate you from the original source making for a more immediate and more immersive experience. This has been true on every single HD release I've seen- even (or especially) the ones that get slagged by the intelligensia here as being examples of 'bad transfers' - like American Werewolf and Excalibur. I've seen Excalibur more times than I can count. I can recite complete passages of dialouge in my head. It is a film that no longer holds any surprises for me, yet my last viewing of it on HD was almost like seeing the film for only the second or third time. No, it wasn't about 3D pop, or not seeing grain- it was simply a sense of being less distanced from the film due to the absence a host of video related artifacting that have been apparent to some degree in every home video version of it I've ever owned- until now. HD DVD has gotten me closer to the film than I've ever been since I first saw it theatrically.

Frankly, I would much rather see things on HD DVD that have been given the short end like Outland and Invasion Of The Body Snatchers rather than things like Star Wars and LOTR which already have SD releases that are pretty much at the pinnacle for that format. So I'm just as baffled by your choices of things that are already available in more than watchable versions.

Michael Douglas in Falling Down is more gangster than any Tony Montana.

I love this movie. Thanks for bringing this up OP. I bet this one would be one of those surprising releases(nice depth).

Is it funny that films like "Fight Club" and "Falling Down" that require the viewer think about what's going on with the movie and the motivations for it are less popular than those that shove the purpose in your face (e.g. "Alien", "Star Wars")?

I was just thinking the same thing about 'Falling Down' as I was watching it in HD on one of the movie channels a few months ago. The DVD for this film is so atrocious I don't even own it. As far as Fight Club is concerned, I certainly am waiting for that one in HD, as its my favorite film. Anyone who says it won't benefit greatly from a new HD version is crazy...this film is darker than dark throughout, and compressed as hell. It desperately needs the HD treatment, as black levels never looked right on the DVD versions. The last time a transfer was minted for this film was before the initial DVD release in 1999. To say that mastering on DVDs has improved since then is a ridiculous understatement.

I kind of like this movie, if it was out on HD DVD I'd probably buy it the day of release and I very rarely rebuy anything I've got on DVD or LD unless the quality of the previous was terribly bad and I liked the movie enough to warrant doing it. The DVD of this isn't that great. I'd also like to see Wall Street as Michael Douglas did an awesome job in that movie as well.
