View Full Version : I helped out HD DVD today.
thebland 05-27-07, 04:35 PM I bought:
1. Happy Feet HD DVD (yes a combo disc but the Blu Ray version, though cheaper, has no lossless soundtrack)
2. Seabiscuit HD DVD
BB had a deal for $10 off is you bought any two HD DVD discs. No such deal for Blu Ray.
I bought one Blu Ray disc: Apocalypto
So a 2:1 advantage for HD DVD today...even I can help out the 'enemy'!;)
You should have bought three HD DVDs and gotten $20 off . . . oh, I get it, you couldn't find three HD DVDs that you liked. ;)
Just ribbing you. Thanks, thebland!
David Scott 05-27-07, 05:20 PM the bland 2:1 HD-DVD sales ratio = good news for HD-DVD :p
I only just got around to watching Seabiscuit last week, had heard all the great word of mouth, never saw the movie, etc, so I had high expectations...yep, pretty much blew me away! What a great movie, wish I wouldn't have waited so long.
You just added two strong titles to your collection (maybe even 3 - never saw Apocalypto), always a GOOD thing! =)

HPforMe 05-27-07, 05:36 PM Well Seabisbuit and Apocalypto not only deliver sterling PQ but are two great movies as well.
hobbs47 05-27-07, 05:39 PM thegland will singlehandedly save HD-DVD!!! thanks!!!
;)
dad1153 05-27-07, 05:43 PM You know HD-DVD is doing something right when hardcore BD advocates like thebland reluctantly (but willingly) acknowledge there are some things the format gets right. That's good news for Blu-ray... how? :p
Seabiscuit is one AMAZING looking title. Of all the high tier releases, it arguably has the most natural color palette of them all. Even the DD+ soundtrack that you'll have to "settle for" is so well done. And it's such a great story! Definitely one of the titles I recommend to anyone going the HD DVD route.

Paul_Seng 05-27-07, 08:15 PM Jeff, please tell me how you like Apocalypto. I might buy this but I have heard mixed feelings about this movie.

I'll let you know tomorrow or later tonight....I have Letters to Iwo Jima or Apocolypto for tonight and tomorrow's viewings.
No Matrix!
I'm pretty sure he bought that earlier in the week. He had mentioned elsewhere that it was one of the reasons he bought another HD DVD player.
eizenga13 05-27-07, 08:58 PM Apocalypto = Best Movie I saw in theatres last year

Me, I am waiting for the punch line. ;)
Favelle 05-28-07, 03:25 AM How was the PQ for Seabiscuit HD-DVD??
angelo913 05-29-07, 08:21 PM How was the PQ for Seabiscuit HD-DVD??
I haven't seen it for months. But I do remember how stunning the PQ was with some scenes looking 3D-ish or surreal.
I may watch it again tonight.

halfsane 05-29-07, 08:22 PM How long will this deal be good for?
all week i believe
Has anyone tried pricematching Fry's with this deal?
I'm gonna try after work to see if they'll honor it.
Fry's pricing (usually 20$ a movie) + 20$ off when you buy 3.
60$ - 20$ = 40$
40$ / 3 = $13.33
Hope they honor it :)
Snickering Hound 05-29-07, 09:12 PM You're supposed to shake your fist at the security cam when you buy those red disks. :p
Seabiscuit was on my 5 free HD-DVD's from Toshiba I sent in when I bought my XA-2 at the end of last month when it dropped to $519 on Amazon.
I'll probably be watching that one around Christmas when it arrives. I'm hoping the video quality lives up to its tier 1 rating.

"It's probably a sale by the manf..."
I was tempted to point out the 3 different cases, each sporting their unique label and question as to whether or not they're all made in the same spot.

Wonderful Freudian slip. You got that right!

So true.
As you know HD DVD sales have sky rocketed since the HD-A2 is now well under $300 and includes 10 free HD DVD titles.
Just to pass time and make a mental note of what advertising works for us I always ask most of our customers how they heard of my company. And whenever they say AVS forum, I ask for their screen name. Well since I know many members very well, I recognize most BD favorable members and when they hesitate to give me their user name I know I'm likely dealing with a member who favors the BD camp. At my company we embrace the red and blue states equally so there is no lack of customer support for the red or blue team at VE.
So just to make things go smoothly I don't ask for any members names anymore.

heavyharmonies 05-29-07, 10:43 PM Yeah well, it didn't last long. Just yesterday thebland was posting in the BR forum about how "Blu-Ray had already won, but HD-DVD just didn't know it yet" along with other "HD-DVD is a dead format" tripe. The thread was eventually deleted.
It's all fine and dandy: he has every right to be one-sided in his choice, just don't be fooled into thinking that he is a fan of HD-DVD in any way, shape or form. He isn't.
tutelary 05-29-07, 11:12 PM Apocalypto = Best Movie I saw in theatres last year
Agreed. Easily the most appealing movie experience of last year. I can't recommend this enough.
Fargus777 05-29-07, 11:27 PM I was in Best Buy yesterday and helped out HD-DVD. This guy was being talked into a Blu-Ray player by an associate and I butted in and told him to go with HD-DVD, 5 minutes later, he had an A2 and 3 movies in his hands. : )

Good job. Nothing like the satisfaction one gets in deprogramming.

Nothing is more frustrating in sales than when another customer "intervenes" (cockblocks)in the sale.
Ahh, you just delayed the inevitable. Soon the person who bought the A2 will be fully addicted to High Def, want more content and wind up a dual supporter. That or he will be cursing you for him having invested in a format for one studio! ;)
En Sabur Nur 06-06-07, 04:14 PM Only one "exclusive" studio. Not the only studio. Just wanted to clarify that. Big difference than saying only one studio.

I think I noticed you say something that wasn't a BD cheer today also.
I am happy in the pants:)
SteroMAdMAn 06-06-07, 04:22 PM Ah yes it was this;
Well...if Walmart buys up all the media and puts it in all their stores, there big buying power could bring down the prices to $5.99 a movie (to go with the $49 HD DVD players). A Joe 6 pack field day!!
The fact that you even acknowledged HD-DVD, Wal-Mart and it being a J6P field day amazed me!
I think the grinch's heart just increased a size :p ;)
