View Full Version : "Top Gun" hd-dvd up for pre-order in the UK
jaaguir 05-29-07, 12:49 PM Sorry if this is old news, but I didnt' find it and I know there are many Top gun funs around here.
It is up for preorder in hd-dvd and blu-ray in the UK, for a 3rd of September release.
Since Paramount owns it worldwide (I think), I guess you could expect a similar release date for the USA too.
For those who want to check themselves:

thewretched22 05-29-07, 02:16 PM I would love to own this on HD DVD, now if only Paramount would offer TrueHD.
johnnyknoxsvill 05-29-07, 02:27 PM Id get it but it says 3/9/07 for release. That has come and gone so who knows when it would be released..
Dutch64 05-29-07, 02:38 PM That would be September 3rd in the UK. ;)
Steve
North America: mm/dd/yyyy
Europe (and maybe the rest of the world): dd/mm/yyyy
So Dutch64 is right.
blainehamilton 05-29-07, 02:54 PM This was one of the defacto movies to own on DVD, I can see it selling huge numbers on HD format.
It's $47.00 plus shipping. I will wait for the American release.
sivartk 05-29-07, 04:03 PM this is one of my non-anamorphic widescreen DVD's, so this upgrade will be welcome, although I will probably also wait for the US release. $23 I might go for, but too high (right now) to pay 23 pounds + VAT + shipping.
The sound on the HD better kick some serious audio!
The title sequence was a get demo on LD for "HT" spks.
sivartk 05-29-07, 05:18 PM I decided to wait it out and have Amazon notify me when I can purchase the HD DVD version through their US Site...hopefully not that long.
Sweet, I might buy this if the price comes down. I've seen the Hdnet version a few times and it looks pretty good. The HDDVD shoulf look 3x better..
So I'd guess a DTS MA track hopfully toshibia gets a patch out that allow full play back of this
I will wait for the American release.
Same here... and I agree with the guy wanting TrueHD on this release. Paramount needs to get with the program and start putting lossless audio tracks on their HD discs.
crakerhead 05-29-07, 06:25 PM i would love to have this, especially if its done right in hd! this can be another great demo disc...but i think i'll wait to see reviews for the UK release
I hope they remastered this one. Was not too impressed with the recent HDNet version they were broadcasting.
johnnyknoxsvill 05-29-07, 06:39 PM I figured there was something I wasent getting  A lil to expensive, like others I will wait for a US release

Indeed it was. [On LaserDisc]
I did, however, think the last LD remaster was annoying in that the new Paramount logo and jingle was inserted in front of the remastered film--and cut off part of the opening music sequence beat/drum.
Paramount, if you are listening.. the Paramount title sequence should be silent for this film!
FoolintheRain 05-29-07, 10:24 PM I doubt it will get TrueHD, but the SE disck that was released this past year DID have DD-EX. Perhaps we will get a DD+EX track.
charlie3133 05-29-07, 10:32 PM Man, this is the video that first got me into home theatre (and motorbikes) all those years ago.
But I also think I will wait for the US version (price)
If the import has the better audio, lossless, it "may" be worth the extra $$$.
DigitalfreakNYC 05-30-07, 12:57 AM This is getting TrueHD on HD and uncompressed on BD.
shadowrage 05-30-07, 02:04 AM You should have titled the post. "Danger Zone".
jiggawhat 05-30-07, 02:22 AM I would love to own this on HD DVD, now if only Paramount would offer TrueHD.
It is.
I suspect the USA release will be before the UK one. Paramount just release American discs in the UK AFAIK and it seems they are the only studio giving UK retailers any kind of schedule at the moment.
FoolintheRain 05-30-07, 03:54 AM I could be wrong, BUT have we seen a TrueHD track on anything that old? It just seems to me that all have been on rather new releases or at least movies from the late 90s. How can you be so confident Paramount will put it on Top Gun when they failed to do so with :
Sky Captain
MI3
actually, they haven't done a TrueHD track yet to my knowledge? I may have missed, it, but can you name one?
ChrisW6ATV 05-30-07, 04:46 AM I got the Laser Disc version right after I got my first Dolby Surround decoder, in 1986. It was a great demo disc. US$30-35 in 1986 dollars is probably less than $47 in 2007, so I might order this import.
this has always been one of paramounts top titles i no i have bought it on every format once on vhs twice on ld and twice on dvd the last version got dts so this might be the first title for them with dolby truehd lets hope so !
Mr. Cinema 05-30-07, 07:43 AM Same here... and I agree with the guy wanting TrueHD on this release. Paramount needs to get with the program and start putting lossless audio tracks on their HD discs.
We have an employee at Paramount over at DVD Talk and he said Top Gun will be one of their titles to get TrueHD for HD DVD and PCM for BD.

It took them ages to put DTS on their SD. Don't hold your breath :)
Lets kick the tires and light the fires....

Then my HD DVD buy is a no brainer.
cybersoga 05-30-07, 10:54 AM play.com's release dates that far in the future are speculative at best

Sorry to get off-subject, but long time no see buddy! I've noticed you're no longer posting on DVDTALK.
On topic - i'll wait for the US release.

Yeah I know. ;)

That sounds promising. I'll keep my fingers crossed that Top Gun and a lot of other upcoming Paramount releases have LPCM/TrueHD.
Fingers crossed the audio sounds correct and is not "sped up" like other releases!

This problem has been blown way out of proportion it affected some early Studio Canal release and that is it. Paramount releases have all been pitch perfect so far.
Are these movies in english with subtitles? Or are they dubbed in another language with english subtitles?

Well, Top Gun is a UK release. That is the country that invented English so chances are, it will be in that language.
All Studio Canal releases of English language films also have english soundtracks. The problem arises with french releases when they include french subtitles that can't be turned off.

What about spanish imports?
a3willia 06-01-07, 06:13 PM I'll be all over this one, especially if it does have a TrueHD track! This is one of my favorite 80's movies. I can't turn it off if I see it on USA or some channel like that.
