Nice, I'm definitely picking this up today... completely underrated De Niro movie. I also consider it his only quality comedy film.

Midnight run is part adventure movie which keeps it interesting and the casting is great. Now that I've watched most of the movie today you'll see some frames that are softer then the rest of the movie but they're far and few between. We all know the SD version was is a pretty ruff and NA. The HD version has none of the video noise plus the blacks coloring are rendered very well.

Funny Jack just threw the Duke off the freight train. "Jack the trains have regular stops. That's so people can get off the train when it stops. They don't throw themselves off the train. :) :) :)

I didn't realize it was out today either. Just happened to stop at Fry's as I was near there and it was Tuesday/new release day. I picked up Flags of our Fathers which is a movie I haven't seen yet. $19.95 for the Midnight Run, Flags is a little high at $28.99.

You need to watch midnight run about 12x to full realize the greatness of this film.

Right after college, i couldnt afford cable, so i watched tapes of this (and blazing saddles) literally every night before going to bed.

I'm cracking myself up reading some of the quotes on this thread. LOL

I just watched the movie a few weeks ago as I learned it was coming to HD DVD. I enjoyed it...and definitely enjoyed the interplay betwen Deniro and Grodin.

Hell even Joey Pants was the typical Joey Pants in this one..which is good.

Plus it was fun seeing "Taggart" get clocked a few times.

Seems there's quite a large fan club of this movie and rightfully so. The outdoor scenes filmed in Arizona look marvelous. The added special feature the making of Midnight Run is interesting, you see the large scope it took to make the movie.

Just watched this, the transfer is very good, some of the night and indoor scenes have fairly heavy grain but outdoor scenes are lovely, colours excellent and the more or less 3.0 soundtrack is surprisingly hifi.

Most importantly the film is great.

It is cheap why hurt yourself you've got HD-DVD. You can now watch this movie in HD never really getting sick of it just like before.

"You wouldn't have change of a thousand?" Looks like I'm walkin.

Damn straight. I remember - years ago (could it really be fifteen years or more?) - watching this with my dad on HBO, laughing our butts off. Definitely a classic.

Was this DeNiro's first comedy? I know he did "We're No Angels" sometime in the 80s, but I'm thinking this was first.

Personally, I don't consider Midnight Run a comedy although there are some scenes that bring a huge smile to my face.
With a good script, Charles Grodin can play a part like this brilliantly.
A must have.

When I saw this was becoming available for HD-DVD I was eustatic. Love to see It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World next. On the more dramatic The Pope of Greenwich Village would be great. Charlie! they took my Thumb!/ The summer wind, came rolling in, from across the Sea. :)

For most HD-DVDs I want custom art covers, but not for Midnight Run... its the original art! I think it suits the movie just fine. I mean, its not a trainwreck like the Children of Men cover or anything. :)

PQ looks good - not "WOW" HD stuff, but solid, especially the outdoor scenes. The AQ is a letdown for me. The theme tune (which is great!) sounds better in the menu than in the movie. There's hardly any rear surround use and there is no dynamics or punch to the AQ at all, e.g. the shotgun blast in the opening scene is flat! They could have made a little more effort on this.

...but the most important thing is that its a great film!

If it's faithful to the original soundtrack, I'm fine with that. I'd rather have that then The Jerk where Universal slapped on some new sound FX which sounded nothing like the original. Just compare the English and French tracks on the "he hates these cans!" scene to see what I mean.

I suppose you are right. But its a shame the music isn't more "surrounding". if you compare the music over the menu to that within the film you'll see what I mean. Mind you, some films they have done a decent job of adding new & improved sound effects, e.g. The Terminator, Star Wars Ep IV to name a few.

My understanding is that the older flicks stayed with Disney, with the new ones going to the Brothers. I may be wrong, but I'm thinking Jackie Brown will be BD-exclusive.

Midnight Run is one of the most underrated/unknown films ever made. So many people I come across have never seen it. It's an absolute classic, and one of De Niro's best efforts, IMO. I was shocked when he was on the Actor's Studio with James Lipton there was no mention of it whatsoever :(.

I just have to share this from the IMDB forums, on "Midnight Run"

My Mother gave me this video as a present for my sixth birthday in 1989. She thought it was a film about chickens with insomnia. I watched it at least once a week from then-on until December last year. After every viewing I'd put a mark on the cover, and at last count there were 1788 marks. I know it word-for-word.
I don't think having seen it at such a young age or so many times has had any adverse effect on me, and when I get released, the first thing I'm gunna do is watch it again. I just wish it wasn't banned in Australian prisons.

True? I don't care. I laughed anyway. :)

I am most impressed with this release. If you like this movie, which I'm sure just about everyone does, then don't let the rather negative "professional" reviews dissuade you. The video quality is often impressive and the audio gets the job done. There is good stereo separation for the musical score and ambient effects.

Now I hope Universal soon gives us The Hard Way, which is another good buddy movie that stars James Woods and Michael J. Fox.

I'm unsure if anyone mentioned this before, but the dialog on the audio track is terribly shrill whenever an actor speaks loudly, yells, or screams. Also at times, it's quite hard to understand what is being said. I know the film is certainly dated, but it's very distracting.

Totally. Especially Joey Pants. I'm thinking it was a low budget flick and they used less than ideal recording equipment, but I could be wrong.

I finally got my rental for this.
It is funny how movies change, this wouldn't work in today's age of cell phones.

Still loved it even with its liberal use of one of the worst movie cliches ever.

The one punch knockout when you want a character to "turn off".
They must have done the one punch knock out about 12 times in this movie.
I would think there would be some permanent damage if someone actually had the strength and know how to punch someone unconscious everytime.

Heh - that was one of the things I mentioned when I was describing the movie to my wife. I mentioned that, while it contains some violence, it's more of a "comic" violence, with people getting knocked out from a single punch all the time.

very average PQ, but this is one of the best movies I have ever seen...

Awesome chemistry between Grodin and De Niro, and there was never a dull moment. Much much better than a lot of movies made today.

I was looking at Martin Brest's directing credits, most recently he did....Gigli. I hope that didn't sink his career, because his movies are very entertaining.
