View Full Version : Sharp introduces smallest DVD player (that happens to also play BD and HD DVD)
My apologies if this has already been posted.
Sharp to Introduce Smallest DVD Player
Sharp has displayed an optical-drive player, which it says is the smallest in the world, that will play CDs, conventional DVDs, HD DVDs, and Blu-ray high-definition discs. The player also uses very little power (10mW), making it ideal for playing discs on laptop computers. Moreover, Sharp said that it expects that the retail price for the device will be less than $100 when it becomes available in mid-June.

If it isn't... things will get interesting real quickly...
DrBoogie 05-29-07, 06:49 PM mystery unveiled: sharp introduces smallest laser for next gen player http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/28/sharp-readies-worlds-smallest-blue-laser-for-bd-and-hd-dvd/
wcaughey 05-29-07, 07:17 PM I'd say things just got real interesting.
Incidentally, what's the most expensive component of combo players?

This.... is good news :D
And the fact it'll be out in a month.....
AV Doogie 05-29-07, 08:14 PM The device is not a 'player' it is a new type of blue laser diode with low power consumption for use in BD and HDDVD devices.
I love it when the media gets it wrong!!

wcaughey 05-29-07, 08:33 PM regardless of not being a player, doesn't this contribute directly to upcoming combo players (announced) and indirectly (unannounced)? With more blue-violet lasers being mass produced, especially for a lower price, wouldn't it bring combo play prices down significantly?
I'm still not clear on the most important componentry inside a combo player, anyone care to fill me in?

Yeah, I remember it was mentioned here that shortage of blue lasers was instrumental in delays/prices of next gen players. And with having available one laser for all media types and systems on a chip solutions that play both formats it's logical that we should see more next gen products on a market
wcaughey 05-29-07, 09:36 PM Yea DrBoogie, It's especially important, too, to mention this is a laser able to read both hd dvd and bluray media. I'd love to see combo prices come down even more. Perhaps we'll see more combo players and not just next gen products due to the increase in supply.
Taperwood 05-31-07, 01:00 AM So BD uses a blue laser and HD-DVD uses a violet laser and now Sharp has made one that does both colors? Is that what we are talking about here?
In any case, one part costing $100 in a dual-player does not bode well for prices coming down anytime soon.
After reading the feedback in the Semiconductor-Today article, it's a wonder this world functions at all.

IMDB is on a role. (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=10665388&&#post10665388) Mistakes galore

The advertising. Reviewers and shills can add up.
Let's hope prices for either or both HD formats drop to below $200 as soon as possible; ideally, yesterday. The lower the better.
