I just did an A/B comparison of my Xbox360 HD add-on vs a Philips upconverting DVD player that I feel is almost as good as my Oppo (that's on another TV). I set up my TV so I could switch between the Component of the Xbox360 and HDMI of the DVD player with a simple click of the remote. I made sure the players started within a second of each other.

It was as obvious as night and day which was HD-DVD and which one was DVD, however, some scenes in the DVD weren't that bad. The opening scene with Trinity vs the cops was quite nice even in the DVD. Strangely, the green tint wasn't as pronouced on the DVD - still there, but not as much green as the HD-DVD...or maybe the greater colors of HD-DVD just brought out the green more...I don't know.

Now the real reason for this post was regarding the Edge Enhancement (EE) I see on the HD-DVD that may have knocked The Matrix out of Tier0. It is also in the DVD!! The only thing different is that the DVD isn't as clear as the HD-DVD so it isn't as obvious. Now I have to wonder if the EE is in the film, which I doubt I  will ever see again.

The green Tint depends on the DVD release, they added tint to the Matrix on releases after reloaded. My original disc was from the original release so it wouldn't be as pronounced on it.

About details, just compare animation on HD-DVD vs. DVD upscale, there are less difference. If you are comparing a scene like blue sky with fewer clouds, then there are less differences. HD-DVD should shine when there are a lot of details.

So if we just watched movies about sky, we'd never need to spend the extra money on HD. :)

I did the same comparison of my HD-D2 vs. my oppo970 side by side, and you could definitely tell a difference. The HD DVD had quiet a bit more detail, and was much sharper looking. Even my wife commented on how much better it looked ;) .

May be too much sharper on HDDVD and may not be natural. For example, at the begining of the first one, the badge looks too new & shinny on the cop's hat whereas it looks more natural on SDDVD.

Another part, when the Agents going up to meet with Trinity, the aluminum ducts in the hallway, again look too new & shinny to be in a run-down-abandoned building. Nevertheless, I still take HDDVD images over standard def ;-)

Cheers,
TP.
