View Full Version : Epic: UT3 is Gears on Crack, Cover is for Wimps!

The latest issue of OXM features a six-page article on Unreal Tournament 3. More important, the preview contains the first details regarding the Xbox 360 version of the game, which both the developers and the magazine editors confirmed it is looking in its current state better than Gears of War.
The reason for that is Epic Games has improved the Unreal Engine 3 for Xbox 360 since they shipped Gears of War six months ago.
In the preview, Epic Games’ Steven Polge, the lead designer of Unreal Tournament 3, confirms that the Xbox 360 version of the game will support four-player co-op and two-player split-screen in the single-player campaign, which will let you take different paths depending on the decisions you take.
The preview also revealed that Unreal Tournament 3 will feature 18 vehicles and 5 types of turrets. Epic also promises “zero-time to spectacle” thanks to the hoverboard (two of them being linked to a Manta in the picture below).
Click here to view high resolution screenshot featuring the hoverboard.
Regarding the controls, Polge revealed that they are so good that half the people who work on the game prefer to play the Xbox 360 version. Furthermore, the guy responsible for the controls has stepped in playtest sessions, where everyone was on keyboards, and with a controller he kicked everyone’s butt.
Now that Epic is known among Xbox gamers for Gears or War rather than its emblematic Unreal franchise, the comparison between the two series is inevitable.
Jerry O’Flaherty, the art director for both games, says that “Gears if a more confined game. UT is about big, huge distances. The speed of UT is so quick; it’s not a walking environment, it’s a running or flying environment.”
Finally, Polge chipped into the discussion saying: “It’s Gears on crack. Cover is for wimps!”
We encourage you to go and get the July issue of OXM to read this UT3 preview, which shows for the first time the Necris Scavenger, new levels and new screenshots of the game with plenty of gore and a disturbing headshot.
Thrillhouse17 05-29-07, 07:30 PM Since UT came first, should Gears be UT on downers?
HorrorScope 05-29-07, 07:32 PM Sounds good and I'm from Missouri on the controller comments. They'll do anything to try to force us to hate a KM that we love. I mean really why isn't there such hatred of steering wheels? Why are they allowed to exist?
One thing I find funny is the saying they are using. Crack is supposed to be really bad. So it's Gears on Crack, really isn't that supposed to be an insult? And how do they know, they do crack over there? lol
it is looking in its current state better than Gears of War.
Strong words, my friend.......strong words. :D

I'd love to believe this, but after years of competing in the UT series, I find it hard to trust.
Every demo I've seen of this game shows people running and hopping, without any dodging or proper axis movement.
Hopefully it'll be more dynamic, but I think it'll be tough to have controller vs. MKB when this rolls out.

modiGTI 05-29-07, 08:36 PM So will the 360 version have KB/Mouse Support? I hate the way the controls feel in GoW, hopefully UT3 is better.
Chuck12 05-29-07, 09:43 PM I hope UT has all the speed of the PC franchise. Who cares if it looks good. UT is all about killing with very fast weapons and fast characters.
Shizelbs 05-30-07, 06:53 PM I am VERY excited. I love the UT series.
Krevnik 05-30-07, 08:17 PM Oh, I know.....I just meant in general. Of course, they may be right.....

Considering Gears was using an early version of the UT3 engine... uhm... yeah... it should be better than Gears.
Well, so far since and before the release of GoW, nothing on either system (Xbox, PS3) comes even close to the quality of GoW. I even have my doubts that Halo3 will be much better (the beta is not impressive, and they may have detuned the beta, but its hard to believe that they will have a vastly superior product in 3 months). I have been playing Resistance and its not even close, as even CoD2 compared with that. If UT3 trumps GoW it will be the must have game on Xbox.
lacombo 05-30-07, 09:29 PM why do hover boards need shocks other than to look different than usual. The craft looks like a SW upgrade.
cant wait to see what other companies do with this engine...
formulanerd 05-30-07, 09:42 PM sorry, but it's not all about looks, gameplay plays a huge factor, and after playing the H3 beta, it trumps gears completely.
i'm a pretty big UT fan, i love fast paced FPS, but i'm not sure if it'll work on a console, but of course i'm willing to give it a chance :)
isaidme 05-30-07, 10:06 PM I hope the controls are alot better then Gears was. The controls were ok for single player mode but horrible for Multiplayer. A simple click of the anolog stick for crouching and ducking behind objects would work and being able to press a single button for jumping would speed up the controls greatly!
jedimastergrant 05-30-07, 10:23 PM I agree with some earlier posters in that the Unreal series has always been about fast paced action and quick kills. So fast in fact that the intended gameplay has only been possible with a m/kb and on the PC. I just hope that they have not changed the game and made it slower so it can be played on consoles. That would be a shame.
I also hope that 360 releases a m/kb like the FragFx for the PS3. If they do then it will be a tough decision on what platform to buy for. Much more excited about this one than Halo 3 as far as multiplayer is concerned.

wow are you serious?
Gears has one of the best control schemes for a shooter on a console...ever. Multiplayer is so easy to pick up and play.
briankmonkey 05-31-07, 01:56 AM I thought the controls for Gears was fine.. I wouldn't say pick up and play just because every casual gaming friend that tried it had trouble for a bit, heck I did at first as the latching of the walls and running is awkward at first (very context sensitive). Once you get the hang it is fine. Still I'd change things like adding being able to just duck anywhere, not just against the wall.
curttard 05-31-07, 03:35 PM Well, so far since and before the release of GoW, nothing on either system (Xbox, PS3) comes even close to the quality of GoW. Judging by the last few gameplay videos of Bioshock, I'd say it smokes Gears both graphically and (especially) artistically. The dynamic lighting in particular is incredible.
TRALFAZ 05-31-07, 03:45 PM I hope it's a lot like Unreal 2004, with all the vehicles and conquer points on the map 2004 was nonstop fun. By the way... cover IS for wimps !! :p
HeadRusch 05-31-07, 04:09 PM I could use a good mindless shooter......the anthesis to the tactical shooters I've grown accustomed to lately....but I'm sick of games like Capture the Flag (seriously, i was sick of this game back in SUMMER CAMP in 1982).
I'm also getting tired of UT's style of weapons......the blob gun, the slow firing plasma ball gun....those weapons got kinda old after awhile.....I'd like more ballistic weapons like assault rifles and stuff that were actually worth using, make the game a little less bunny hopping and a little more relying on the map.....chain-missile firing rocketlaunchers is just a little bit too oldschool for me of late.
Run out into open..hope your shots hit your opponent before his hit yours...die..respawn...etc. I'd like Gears of War, with much larger maps, a few more wepaons, and no "sticky cover" so you could still move around quickly (no roadie-run), but still had map-cover to use to your advantage.
So will the 360 version have KB/Mouse Support? I hate the way the controls feel in GoW, hopefully UT3 is better.
Doubtful since they have been touting how good the controller is. I know the PS3 version will have KB/mouse support.

I really find this hard to believe.
They have been pushing this with shadowbane as well that the controller plays better, but at the end of the day it sounds like they had to goose up the auto-aim and adjust the fine pitch analog controls to make the controller guys competative. I'm sure it will be the same with UT3. Not sure which platform I'll buy for... it probably depends on if I have the spare cash to upgrade my PC when it comes out or not.

Pretty much all GoW had was detail, not really too much of a story >.>

I'll probably end up buying both. XBox version for playing with my XBox buddies. Windows version for playing the crazy maps and mods that the community will come up with.

LOL.. hahahaha :p
gimme a frackin break man.. i guess keeping in mind this is a magazine article and not some pc forum where all the real players would be, i would expect this.
let me do about 5 rail gun (sorry lightning gun :) ) kills while you're still trying to turn 180 degrees.

It looks like the article was meaning the game devs, not the magazine peeps. I agree that anyone that is skilled in keyboard/mouse will be more accurate, but for people that maybe don't play lots of PC games the controller might be the way to go...
jedimastergrant 06-01-07, 11:02 PM So does anybody have any news about kb/m support for the 360 version? All other things being equal I will probably get the PS3 version because of the FragFX. But, if MS came out with something similar I could change my mind.
4player coop in single player? i know UT isn't much for SP, but that's very cool; i was pining for that in gears BIG TIME
Sounds good and I'm from Missouri on the controller comments
am i really that stoned or does this actually not compute :) lol
oh the show me state; i'm blazed, forget it :)
Considering Gears was using an early version of the UT3 engine... uhm... yeah... it should be better than Gears.
the environments are just so much bigger though; if they can maintain gears graphics with UT huge distances, wow, that'd be quite a feat, man is this game looking great; this cool white box is doing a heck of a job
If UT3 trumps GoW it will be the must have game on Xbox.
is it even possible it won't be a must have? i mean, can these guys go wrong? such a fantastic team, with great community support, a fantastic franchise, a great engine, and now we get it on the 360? i mean, they'd really have to FCK things up for it to be anything but a "must have". and to me it looks like they're staying true to the UT style, so i can't imagine it being less than a 9
here's an unusual perspective: personally, what i like about console FPS is that it is slower; ut2k4 on the pc was so frantic it gave me a massive headache; anyone actually like the slower play, and more innacuracy of a console? i certainly wouldn't go up against someone with a kbm, but i actually prefer things to not be as fast as the flip of a wrist, it desperately tries to give me a seizure :)
joe_six_pack 06-01-07, 11:47 PM I've played the older UTs on the pc. Between halo & UT, I pick halo for fun factor. Graphically, UT should be much better than H3, but for some reason, I really dont care for UT gameplay.

You must not be from Missouri. :p
