I wouldn't think so, Paramount isn't serious about anything HD right now and their catalog is one of my favorites :(

Hey Gary, at least one thing you can look forward to is the fact that your set-up (which I read about on another thread concerning subtitles) will "hide" the forced subtitles on the theatrical version since I believe your home theater is full scope? or something to that affect?

I was planning on doing a full review for www.dvdreview.com of "Terminator 2" HD DVD (both theatrical and extended cuts) since I have not written any reviews for them in a few months (I have written 100+ to date), but it seems like that won't happen since my mind is not in it at the moment as my family is dealing with our mother's illness.

Sorry guys, I would have liked to have written a full review of this title like I did for "Basic Instinct" and "Total Recall" HD DVDs from Studio Canal in the past.

I should be receiving my copy by the end of the week, so I can at least post a few quick observations though. :)

Not having acquired any non-US releases before, when buying any foreign disc (French, Japanese, etc) will you still have an English soundtrack without sub-titles option?

fire407
05-30-07, 01:19 PM
The extended version will have an english audio track and allow you to turn the sub-titles off. Supposedly the theater version will have forced sub-titles. You get both versions when you order. All of the other movies that I have ordered allow me to turn sub-titles off. That includes Reign of Fire, Total Recall, Basic Instinct, and the three Rambo movies.

Digital Man5

I wouldn't mind picking up T2, Total Recall and Underworld: Evolution. It's good to know for a fact that you can turn off the subtitles and listen to the English audio. Now to find out if all three run on the HD-A1. I am pretty sure Underworld does. Don't know about T2 or Total Recall. I wouldn't be so hesitant, but with Stalingrad not running on those units it's kind of a shaky deal until I can hear confirmation.

Not having acquired any non-US releases before, when buying any foreign disc (French, Japanese, etc) will you still have an English soundtrack without sub-titles option? In addition to the titles that fire407 and Digital Man5 list where the subs are optional when you choose the English audio track, the Japanese releases of xXx (with Vin Diesel) and Equilibrium also have optional subs with English audio track.
So far only a couple of the Studio Canal releases of English-spoken movies have forced subs (Three days of the Condor and Serpico have them). Xavier Pouyat, the French HD DVD insider, posted on the insider thread a while back that his is due to licensing.
Seems weird that SC's license for distributing some English-spoken movies is for original audio track and optional subs, while with other movies it's original audio track with forced subs...

I finally got off work. So yeah, I got my copy of T2.

Woo-Hoo!!!

The good news:

Picture quality is top-notch. For a 15+ year old movie this transfer looks unbelievable. Extremely good! No exaggeration!

The bad news:

I was under the impression that the theater cut we were able to turn off the subtitles and just on the director's cut it was forced. But it appears the subtitles are FORCED on BOTH VERSIONS (both discs).

The subtitles aren't a deal-breaker, but yeah they suck big-time. Again, I thought on the theatrical release they weren't forced. It appears they are. I couldn't figure out how to turn them off, anyway. And I double-checked the director's cut. Yep, forced too.

Ridiculous!

I'm still happy I purchased the title. If for no other reason, the picture quality is top-notch. The quality doesn't show any age at all imo.

Am I an idiot or am I right in that the subtitles are forced in both versions (both discs) of this film !?!?!?

hurleyjj
05-31-07, 05:50 PM
After re-examining the email from Xploited, they said the director's cut has OPTIONAL subtitles.

Well, I'm here to tell you -- I couldn't figure it out. So maybe I'm an idiot. The menu is so simple in format that I didn't spend too much time looking. What did I to wrong, people?

BTW: If it's true I can turn off subtitles with the director's cut, then I'm super-happy. Because, to be honest, I'd rather have the extended version with no subtitles than the theatrical release.

Anyone else blown away with the PQ? Anyone else have an issue with taking off subtitles on the director's cut?

David Kiker
05-31-07, 05:50 PM
French subtitles are forced on the theatrical cut not on the director's cut. This has been posted before and here is the posted data from xploited cinema (and I am confident they tested it).

DVD 1 - THEATRICAL VERSION
Anamorphic (16:9 1080P Hi-Def) Widescreen (2.35:1) Version
English 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio, French 5.1 DTS-HD Hi-Resolution Audio & French 2.0 DTS-HD Hi-Resolution Audio Options
Forced French subtitles when accessing the English audio track

DVD 2 - DIRECTOR'S CUT VERSION
Anamorphic (16:9 1080P Hi-Def) Widescreen (2.35:1) Version
English 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio
Optional French and Dutch subtitles

Here's a review for T2 and they give a positive score.

I'm waiting for it to be released in Australia as it's also HD-DVD exclusive so it may not have printed subtitles like the French version.

Can someone tell me where the sub are on T2.

Are they in the black border (below the 2.35:1 image) or are they over the movie itself? Just wondering if I can mask over them with my Lumagen?

I have this on order from MovieTyme (I'm in the UK) and today received an e-mail about the subs and they are saying that they can be turned off on the DC.

The subtitles are in the bottom black bar as long as that line of text can fit on one line. If the subtitles display two lines of text, which they do, then the top line appears in the actual picture while the bottom line is in the black.

On the latest batch of Studio Canal discs, including T2, you can move the subtitles wherever you want them using the letter keys at the bottom of your remote.

Well, I received my HD DVD of Terminator 2 today.....

The original packaging was opened (yet the shipping packaging was sealed, so it's not customs) the case had a huge crack the stretched from top to bottom, the disc also had a deep circular scratch that rounded the entire disc and causes skipping! WTF? Now I am waiting to hear from Tony at Xploited on what I can do about this, I sure hope I don't have to pay another $12-15 for shipping back to the US from Canada!....This will make this one hell of an expensive HD DVD if I do. :(

I can confirm that the subtitles are not forced on the extended cut.

It plays just like any other US release HD DVD on my 2.2 firmware HD-A1.

As for picture quality...it's definitely nice...but I'm really getting jaded after enjoying movies upconverted by my Zenith DVB-318 for so long now on my smallish 30" tube.

The biggest difference is the wide shots, the higher resolution of HD allows things in the background to better rendered.

Okay...now someone please bring out "True Lies" so I can import that too!

My copy of T2 from Xploited had the plastic along the opening-side of the spine ripped the entire length. When I opened the case up I could tell why: It appears Tony from Xploited threw a packaging peanut in there to protect the two discs in the case from coming loose or moving around and scratching themselves. So good job, Tony! Thanks!

Discs and case are in 100% flawless condition as usual from Xploited.

Anyway: I still haven't thrown T2 in my 360's HD-DVD player again yet, but here's some more info on my situation:

One person here suggested to remove the subtitles without using the menu. Okay, yeah, I'll look into that. My 2 remotes for my 360 (yes media remotes not controllers) don't have subtitle buttons but I'm sure you do it somehow thru them with another button (probably).

Another person (John Chu) a couple posts up makes a comment that seems to suggest he just throws in the director's cut disc and it works with no subtitles automatically. I don't know if that was his intention but that's what I got from his post. Well, my DC disc of T2 started up automatically playing with the subtitles. His may have, too, but I'm just saying his post makes it seem like maybe it didn't.

So anyway, I'll stop rambling. I'm sure I can get the subtitles removed since others say they have. It's just a matter of me figuring out how to do it with the remote without using a subtitle button since it doesn't have that button. And no, I'm not completely stupid; I have still only spent about 20 seconds total trying to figure it out a few hours ago and that's it. I haven't had the chance to try again. Let me also mention again just how beautiful the PQ is on this release. Absolutely gorgeous!!

Normally, when you first start the disc, it asks whether you want English, French, or Dutch. If you select English, the movie will play without any subtitles. The language setting is stored in the player's persistent memory, so it will not ask again. If you have the wrong language setting stored in your player for some reason (which may happen if you played other Studio Canal discs before), just click on the arrow button in the lower left corner of the main menu to change it.

here is the way it works on my French copy of Le Pacte des Loups.
the "C" button on the bottom of the remote lets you cycle thru 3 positions for the subs- on 2.35 AR movies it functions like this:
first position is inside the 2.35 image area (perfect for people with constant height set-ups)
second position has the subs straddling the bottom edge of the image area. when the subs are two lines, the top line is in the image area, the bottom is in the black bars
third position has the letters in the black bar, with the top edge of the letters hugging the outside edge of the image area.

"D" button changes the size, also in 3 increments

Yes, T2 is the same. Using the D button to shrink the size and C to shift them down, you can successfully move the subtitles completely out of the movie image.

The extended cut on Disc 2 does not have forced subtitles. Only the theatrical cut on Disc 1 has that problem.

I think it's great, but then I rent/buy movies thinking they'll be fine and that I will enjoy them. On the other hand, so many people here are ultra-picky, and for everyone that enjoys it, I'm sure a few will find hideous flaws that make it just impossible for them to enjoy it. ;)
