I am a noob so sorry if this is a basic question.

I just recently purchased a 42 inch Samsung Plasma. Yesterday I was reading about the DVE Calibration DVD. Then today I saw there is also a HD version.

With the new HD Avia and HD DVE programs are the better suited for HD TVs than the old disc? Or are they only to be used with HD-DVDs? Can I get the new "HD" disk to use with my HD Plasma and standard DVD player?

Greetings

The DVE HD disc is a combo ... so it has both HD and SD.

I don't know if the AVIA HD is a combo or not.

Does the SD side of the disc work in both a standard DVD player and a HD-DVD player?

I could see where you would want to use the SD side of the disc in a HD-DVD player to check upscaling.

But until I get a HD-DVD player, I 'd like to use at least one side of the disk with my current DVD player.

Does the SD side retain the clumsy interface of the stand-alone SD version or has it been upgraded with the improved interface I've seen reported for the HD version?

The SD side is still the same and will work as usual in any player that handles standard DVDs. I was told by Ovation Multimedia that the Avia II HD discs would not be combo versions.

Does Avia have anything better then DVE?

Which versions are you referring to? The SD version of each has unique features that the other does not. The HD version of Avia 2 has not been released yet, but I expect the same will be true. Avia is typically priced nearly twice what DVE is selling for. Many people own both titles. There is worthwhile learning in both programs.

I also believe that the HD DVE disc is in the HD-DVD format, whereas the AVIA HD disc a Blu-Ray version. However, I am usure about this.

DVE is coming in BD, also. Avia II will be issued in NTSC, PAL, HD DVD and BD formats.

Glad to hear that. I would have hoped they would be released in both formats. It does not make sense that they would restrict themselves to only one format.

No certain dates. We will likely see the various formats appear throughout the Summer or into the Fall.

Hi All. I've been lurking since March. My 1st HDTV will probably be an 8g Pioneer, but which DVE disc do I buy? There are many of them on sale at the present. I'm starting out with just a progressive DVD player. Will one disc calibrate the TV and the DVD player? Thanks for the education I've already received from all the posts on this great forum!

Greetings

A disc won't help to calibrate the DVD player if there is no image to be seen. :)

Probably get the HD DVE ... since it has the SD version too.

CAlibrate the TV first ... then calibrate the DVD player (where applicable) ... then fine tune the TV settings again.

Michael,

Thanks for the help.

Yeah, got it now... HDTV, then disc, then calibrate.

Piece of cake.
