XBRSteve 06-10-07, 05:58 PM You can re-encode the video to WMV-HD and play it on a PC or media extender like the Xbox. Typical files size should be around 8GB so it will fit on a DL DVD. I have seen it played on a Xbox 360 and the video quality is quite nice. Of course you don't get the uncompressed audio but you do get standard DD5.1.

I don't think he cares about playing it on just one device like the Xbox or making data DVD's for the PS3. He cares about making DVD-Rs that acts like mini Blu-ray discs that are playable in BD players. I haven't seen any authoring programs that can convert HDV footage or TV recordings to BD-structured DVD-Rs, but those AVCHD camcorders from Sony, Panasonic, and Canon that records to 3" DVD-Rs makes discs that are playable in standard Blu-ray players. Sony's hard drive and Memory Stick based AVCHD camcorders comes with software that takes that AVCHD footage and allows you to burn 5" DVD-Rs that can play in Blu-ray players like the 3" DVD-R based camcorders. Those are using H.264 on DVD-R discs that can play in any standard BD player; however I have yet to hear about using MPEG-2 (HDV) video on DVD-Rs that plays in BD, only HD-DVD players.

TheSimplePanda 06-24-07, 01:38 AM There is in fact a BD-9 standard:

The point is basically Blu-ray authoring on red-laser DVD medium.
So yes, it seems it can be done.
Jim Kiler 06-25-07, 08:15 PM Yes, this is a really cool ability I believe both Sony and Panasonic added it to their stand alone players with a firmware upgrade. Sony and Panasonic sell HD camcorders that record to DVD media, hard drive, or SD card. All of these AVCHD camcorders are made to be able to burn to a DVD and watch on a Blu-Ray player. I am sure they could also be converted to something a HD DVD player can burn as well.
Sony and Panasonic consider it a interim solution on the camcorder front until they can get Blu-Ray support directly in camcorders.
Tom Roper 06-25-07, 10:36 PM Hate to toss cold water on this but HDV/AVCHD DVD-5/9 camcorder compatibility for Blu-Ray players is spotty at best.
For distribution on Blu-Ray, the only certainty of playback is with Blu-Ray 25/50gb media.
If your objective is playback on your personal player, success may be possible. However if you want to distribute your hi-def camcorder footage to other Blu-Ray owners, your chances for success will be hit or miss, mostly miss with DVD-5/9 red laser media.
Wish it weren't so.
It's not really much better for HD-DVD owners. While HDV 1080i compatibility on DVD-5/9 is 99.8%, with so few owners it might as well be 0.001%.
I shot some remarkable 1080i footage with the Canon XH-A1 in the Carribean, indoors and outside with 32 family members. Out of that whole group, including my brother in law who has 5 HDTV plasma televisions, excluding mine there is a sum total of (1) HD-DVD player on somebody's toshiba laptop, and no Blu-Ray players.

do you know of any links that talk about the issues? I have read of someone with a PS3 able to stream the movies over ethernet from a PC to watch them. I have not heard a peep about issues. Of course being first gen for this AVCHD format i would expect issues.

PS3 is a streaming media server, not a Blu-Ray standalone. So PS3 can do more, and is a great media hub.
But the point I am making about HDV/AVCHD DVD-5/9 camcorder compatibility is about the overall issue of using Blu-Ray as a distribution format. In other words, as long as you're willing to pony up $20-25 per BD disk and $499-999 for a BD burner, you can create disks that playback in standalone Blu-Ray players from Samsung, Panasonic, Sony, Pioneer etc. But that's a significant deviation from being to cheaply put 5 minutes of HD camcorder footage on a 30 cent disk with your existing burner with AC3 5.1 and fully functional menu structure as you can on the other HD competing format. And while you actually can reach some level of success with DVD-5/9 media on some Blu-Ray standalones, it's hit or miss, not assured compatibility unless you go the Blu-Ray media route.
