View Full Version : how to mount power outlet with slim flush mount
Forgive me if this question has been asked, but every instance I found tunred into an argument about surge protection, which is not what I am after.
I recentlly purchased a 50" panasonic plasma and a universal wall mount. The mount is very slim and only protrudes 1" from the wall.
My problem is I want to install an electrical outlet behind the TV but the power cord plug is longer than 1".
The only viable solution I have heard is to build a small alcove into the wall for the electrical outlet but I don't really know how to go about doing this.
Has anyone else ran into this problem?
torino420 06-01-07, 11:50 AM Just go down to home cheapo and get the recessed clock outlet. It's only like 5 bucks.
I did this but these parts are not typically available locally. If you want one outlet, then the clock outlet is perfect.

Is what you have called a recessed clock outlet also? Where did you get yours from?
torino420 06-01-07, 12:01 PM The outlet is a Leviton 5280 that has built in surge protection. The recessed box came from http://www.recessedelectricaldesigns.com/index.cfm/home.htm
Hope that helps.

I've got the same mount, and I love it. That thing is a beast!! I hung from mine before hanging my plasma :D
What's the make and model of the slim mount?
torino420 06-01-07, 08:58 PM Sanus VMPL3 it comes with both low profile and tilting brackets. Just got my 58 hung up too. Taking a breather hehe
The VMPL3 is only 1" thick? Is that the one hahns used?

I'm seemingly obsessed with the cleanest living room install I can do considering my goals and you just gave me a great way to recess the plugs...even though they will mostly be hidden behind my Premier AM3-B mount.
Here's another in-wall surge protector with some power cleanup as well...more expensive but thought I'd throw it out there as PSAUDIO has a great rep in the obsessed audio world:

Thanks for all of the replies everyone. I mounted the set this weekend. The outlet was exactly what I needed.
Arch, the mount that I used was very similar but a little different,

I will probably replace the cheapo outlet with a good one with Surge protection soon.
One last question. I'm in the process of building the entertainment center to go beneath the set. It will be in the style of a salamander design or the one in this link

Does anyone know where to get perforated metal to use on the doors?
Thanks.

fatman72 06-04-07, 01:20 PM oh man that is cool, how far back is your viewing distance? and how do you like it so far?
torino420 06-04-07, 01:24 PM 12ft from the couch and up to about 25 feet since the kitchen is directly behind the couch. I love it, no HD content yet, will be ordering soon though.

Yup, Recessed wall outlet is good idea. Also, I used right-angle power cords (Tributaries) that came in 1' and 3' lengths. Additionally, I used right angle RCA plugs (Steren) to make the A/V connections.
