I was at the Forum Shops exotic car dealership/display and they had these huge Ferarri red CAT speakers, I believe ffrom the tube amp company. Anyone know the story on those? Also, stayed at Skylofts at MGM Grand! 2 bedroom loft 3000 square feet, much less than Valhalla Cables!!!

Mark, they put them there because I told them you were comin' to Vegas. They know you spend the big bucks on audio and home theater gear, not gambling, and that your son Alex luvs to shop high end, too. So they put them there for you to take back to Michigan with you.

The loft that you stayed in is bigger and more roomy than most AVSer's homes!!!@@@

Mark,

Yeah, I know the whole story- I was one of the guys to set 'em up, as well as the CAT audio system throughout the rest of the ECACP showroom. The speakers are actually from California Audio Technology, they weigh 5000lb each, are self-powered, and run 560k for the pair installed (in that form- with Ferrari paint). They are owned by Creative Home Theatre in Las Vegas (CAT's local dealer) and they will actuall shuttle people from the exotic car showroom to CHT.

Because Exotic Cars at Ceasar's Palace is the only authorized US dealer for Koenigsegg CCX cars (1 mil each)- they asked for something special from Creative Home Theatre to celebrate the debut of the CCX in the US (last August)- so the owner of CHT sent those speakers (which also spent a couple years at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia, without the stands that hold the amps and the source components).

What condition were they in? Were there any drivers that were damaged? People always seem to thump the drivers with their fingernails- denting the midranges and 9" woofers, the 22" woofers have been dinged in the dustcaps- but it doesn't affect performance. I actually had to replace the 9" on the right speaker the Fri. after CES because it was so badly damaged (the surround had actually been ripped). I have to wonder if people knew just how much each of those drivers cost- would they be so disrespectful of that property.

By the way, those beasties play for real- and have no problem filling the entire store with just the 2 of them.

Here's a pic.

Hi Dan
The speakers looked brand new! Drivers were perfect. I didn't notice any other gear. Or that rare car. Thanks for the story!!

Her name is Charla, and she's one of the salespeople at Exotic Cars at Ceasar's Palace. Their whole crew (salespeople and security) is very knowledgeable, and quite friendly actually. Oddly, I admit it was a surprise to me, I expected attitude and snobbery from the staff the first time I was there- but I couldn't have been more wrong! 6 months after I was there for the first time to work on their rig- I was recognized by everyone, and was able to move freely where I needed to to do my work.

I seriously look forward to being able to buy from them someday.

Dan

PS- by the way, I took that picture!!!!!!!

What speakers???

That setup can't possibly sound any good due to the room.

I also wonder how many people actually buy from Vegas high end dealerships. I heard a rumor that one high end dealership opened some time ago (maybe this one?) and there were lineups to get in the door.

99% of the people were lookieloos on vacation in Vegas, hoping that their last $1.00 slot pull would net them the jackpot so they could buy something. Then they went back to their real life..:)

You're right, Curt:

Car Showrooms are notoriously difficult to get high fidelity sound in! But if you could find a chair that put your ears at 8' and we spread the speakers from 6 to 14 feet apart, and maybe used like 10 or 12 gobos with absorbers and diffusers attatched- that room might sound pretty darn good.

As an aside; Suge Knight (death row records fame) said that he'd never heard Tupac sound that good. And who would argue with Suge Knight?

He'd pop a cap in yo' a$$. :p

Well at least we know from his comments that the 30-40hz range is reproduced well in that room..;) Add a bit of high end sizzle and he's good to go. Mids? Who needs mids? ;)

what's a mid?

Seriously though, you should have been there to see the look on his face when he saw those 22"s....it was like someone ( rest of comment edited to protect my a$$ from caps )!

This could be very far from the discussion at hand... How do they sound?

To bad those pair of boom booms don't come with the installation.
BTW Dan Do you think we could fit them in my video room somehow? <grin>

Frantz, they do actually sound quite nice- in that showroom it's all about shock-value. There are at least 2 installations that I know of that are currently in various stages of completion that if necessary, a visit could be arranged if you're interested. Otherwise, there are at least 3 showrooms in the US that have the same driver arrays, but in a different configuration.

Jim, the boom-booms will cost alot more than you're willing to sacrifice (you REALLY don't want to go there!!!) but the speakers can absolutely go into your room! Funny, you read my mind- I was going to suggest these to you :D

Crap

Now I am going to have to enlarge the home theatre again.
