View Full Version : Need help getting image to my inFocus 4805
Rod Martin 06-02-07, 03:29 PM I'm not expecting much here, as I'll bet most have moved on from the 4805, but I am trying to get a video signal from my MacBook Pro out to my inFocus 4805.
I have a DVI to component converter and component cables running to the 4805. I'm using SwitchRezX to set timing numbers up, but I don't know which ones to set to get an image. Right now, I have these settings:
Pixel clock 31.61 MHz non-interlaced
Numbers are H pixels, V lines unless otherwise noted
Active: 854 / 480
Front Porch: 20 / 1
Sync Width: 86 / 3
Back Porch: 106 / 13
Scan Rate: 29.656 kHz / 59.671 Hz
Positive Sync
Any clues how to get an image? Right now, I can see that *something* is showing up. I had a window dragged to the 4805 and could *just* tell it was there. Screen is black, jittery, with two wide green bands on the left and right. After a while, 4805 goes to displaying the Signal Out Of Range message.
Thanks!
reconlabtech 06-02-07, 06:26 PM Your MacBook Pro DVI puts out both digital and analog. You should be able to use a DVI to VGA adapter and then a VGA cable to the 4805, or, VGA to component cable to the 4805. Much easier than trying to set up a digital to analog converter.
Rod Martin 06-02-07, 11:57 PM Isn't that I what I have with the adapter I have? It plugs into the DVI port and has RGB component out on the other side.
Ja Phule 06-03-07, 03:22 AM The 4805 will not accept 854x480 over analog, it can only be done via digital DVI with some tweaking. If you do analog, I'd recommend feeding the 4805 a resolution of 1280x720, assuming you're doing this for watching video and not web browsing.

Ok, when you said converter, I saw digital to analog.
Like said above, pick an HD resolution at 60Hz and see what happens.
Rod Martin 06-03-07, 12:05 PM This is exactly what I am using...

I can pick an HD resolution, but what about all those other numbers? I have no idea where to begin with stuff like sync width and H/V scan rate, etc...
Rod Martin 06-03-07, 12:07 PM It has DIP switches for various HD resolutions. I currently have 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i on as those are supported by the 4805. There is also a switch for 16:9 ratio, which is set on.

Why do you even need dip switches? This is the problem. You don't need a converter, just an adapter. Let the MacBook output 1280X720 and use one of these:

Rod Martin 06-03-07, 03:04 PM What is that cable and where can I get it? I went with the adapter (not converter or so the site says) because I was having a devil of a time finding ANYTHING that claimed to work with the DVI port on my MacBook Pro. The adapter I bought came the closest, and even then it wasn't a certainty, but from what I was able to see on my screen, it looked/looks possible.
According to my research, the MBP has a Radeon X1600, VRAM Type: GDDR3 SDRAM using a 16 lane PCI Express bus. But whether it's a stock card or how the signal is output to the DVI port, I don't know.
If you are saying that cable will work, I'm more than happy to buy it if you'll tell me where I can get it (although I would be out the $30 for the adapter)
Rod Martin 06-03-07, 03:05 PM Would this work? Then I could avoid plugging and unplugging my external monitor all the time.

Ja Phule 06-03-07, 06:06 PM Why are you even bothering with DVI to component? Just use a DVI to VGA adapter and use a vga connection to the 4805 using the m1 to vga cable that comes with the 4805. Or just go DVI to DVI and get the m1 to dvi cable.
Rod Martin 06-04-07, 01:39 AM Maybe because I might also want to run this through my Denon 2807, which does not have a vga port?
DVI to DVI is a possibility, but I sure can't find a reasonably priced single-to-dual DVI cable out there (so I can still keep it connected to my external monitor). All I could find were insanely priced switchboxes.
reconlabtech 06-04-07, 09:22 AM monoprice.com - have a look there for your cable.
Rod Martin 06-04-07, 05:00 PM Sorry, I'm just not seeing how this cable is different from the adapter I have already, other than the fact that it has the cables "preattached".
I see this disclaimer on almost all the DVI-component cables on monoprice.com...
(*)The Cable Not Support your Computer Monitor Video Port, or Y , Cr, Cb Video. Your Video Source Must Provide a YpbPr Component Video Signal form the DVI-I Video Ports to Use Cable
So, not seeing how this will work. If I am wrong, please educate me.

Your adapter requires some kind of dip switch setting - I don't know why if you are using a DVI-I jack on the MacBook that puts out analog. You don't need dip switches.
YPbPr is ANALOG
YCbCr is the digital format for YPbPr
The Monoprice warning is so that somebody doesn't think they are buying DIGITAL CABLE.
The item in post #10 above will also work. I would just not try to drive your monitor and your PJ at the same time.
Like I said, tell your MacBook to output 1280X720 @ 60Hz and plug one of the Monoprice cables into it and the PJ will do the rest.
Devedander 06-04-07, 05:32 PM I may be missing something, but why all the switching instead of just getting a DVI to M1 cable... straight from the macbook into the 4805?

He wants to keep his monitor hooked up.

To answer this question, your Sewell adapter has an ATI chipset in it that does a conversion on the signal from the ATI Radeon 8500 to be analog compatible with all analog devices, hence the dip switches.
Your MB Pro uses an ATI Radeon X1600 chipset and ALREADY outputs YPbPr so you don't need to convert anything. In fact, MacBook Pros all come with a DVI-I to VGA adapter, all you needed was the VGA to Component adapter to finish the connection, which I thought 4805s already come with.
So between the Mac Book Pro and the 4805, you already had what you needed, just not if you wanted to keep the monitor hooked up also. THat might not work so good anyway because you are splitting the sgnal.
Rod Martin 06-04-07, 07:23 PM Thanks! I am now understanding this much better!
Yes, ideally, I'd like to keep my LCD monitor connected, but will put up with swapping out the cable if I have to.
Yes, the inFocus 4805 does have VGA in, and while that would work, I have an A/V receiver in between the two that does not have VGA in. Rather than deal with HDMI (which the 4805 does NOT have), I want to go to component so I can choose whether I want to run my MacBook Pro to the receiver (at home) or directly to the 4805 (on the road for presentations).
Thanks again!

You can also get an M1 to HDMI adapter that will work with the 4805.
