I recently purchased an Infocus In72 projector and while the image quality for DVD's is fantastic i can't get a decent picture from my cable box I have it set up with a basic composite cable sd cable box (waiting for HD box) and the brightness seems to go in and out as well as a horizontal line that goes from bottom to top continuoisly. any tips on how to improve or optimum settings for watching dvd's and cable tv?
thanks

You have two problems there. The first is a lousy picture from you're cable box. The real fix for that is to literally wait for your HD box to arrive. The composite output is probably the best you have out of that box, and the signal from the cable company simply is not that good.

The second problem, the horizontal line, is almost certainly a ground loop problem. To check if this is the case, try plugging the projector into the same outlet that the cable box is plugged into. This might clear it up. You can also *temporarily* use a 3 prong adapter to see if removing the ground removes the problem. It probably will. I say temporarily because there's a reason that ground is there and removing it is a potentially serious electrical hazard. After verifying the problem with the adapter, remove it and continue using the 3 pronged grounding plug.

Before you make any permanent changes to you setup, wait for your HD box to arrive. It's possible that you may not have the problem after using the new box.

Thanks for the tip! I'll just have to wait it out i guess. How 'bout excessive white causing a halo effect?

That's typically caused be excessive "Sharpenng" of the picture. Set the "Sharpness" control on your IN72 to the lowest setting. I doubt if you cable box has this in its setup menu. You've got a defective cable box - if you complain, "strongly" to your cable company, maybe they will accelerate the delivery on your HD box.

Some cable companies deliver defective cable boxes to customers and won't do anything about it unless you complain, and keep complaining untill they fix it.

just remember that even with your new hd cable box unless your actually watching an HD channel your picture will never look as good as dvd or true hd...their just isn't as many native pixels in the picture compared to the higher res dvds or hd......standard tv is like 640x480i and dvd is 720x480p (480i means thier is two seperate less than 480 frames to make up one 480p frame) its like blowing up a smaller low res photo to view on a higher resolution computer monitor...it gets grainy or fuzzy with less contrast and definition. more native resolution= sharper better picture...even on lower resolution displays

The best I have been able to do with SD cable is I picked the best feed available coming from my cable box, in my case it was S video. I ran that feed into a DVD burner player I use as a hub for all video in. I have that set to output 480p over component and I run that component cable directly to my projector. Screen size is 72x96 120” 4:3

Below are a couple SD images the first one is a analog feed passing thru the cable box the second is a HBO digital feed both are not HD.

A strong SD signal will make a good image a poor weak signal will look lousy.

Seems to be working for me. Sometime if the host server for a linked photo is down or having bandwidth problems the links will show as broken. I always link thumbnail images of a smaller size that allow them to load faster. To see larger images or more just click on the picture and it will redirect you to the host.
