I know this topic has bean discussed a lot and I have read several of the posts - all great info, but I still have a couple of questions. I have an Optoma 720p projector, Denon AVR 887 Receiver, PS3, Digital HD DVR(Time Warner Cable) and Toshiba DVD. I am trying to connect PS#, Cable, and DVD through HDMI connections to both the projector and an LCD TV - only watching one display at a time. It seems from the info that my best bet is the gefen 4x2 or the octavia 3x2. My cable run to the projector is about 30'. Any opinions or help would be much appreciated.
Welcome to AVS dicky23,
Having a 4x2 or 3x2 switcher would be the easiest route...... or an alternative is what I do.
I also have two setups in the same room.
I have a Benq projector, and a Samsung DLP RP set.
All my gear is in one rack, using a 5 port in, 1 out HDMI switcher, and a component switcher, 4 in, 1 out.
What I do is have one 35Ft 22AWG HDMI cable running to the Samsung, plus a 50ft component cable along side also, and when I use the projector, I have a 15ft HDMI cable, plus a component cable run also, ready to just plug into the switchers, after unplugging the output cables of course.
Then I just plug the cables into the projector, and thats it.
This is no big deal to do, takes me 10 seconds at the longest to do.
All my cables are out of sight also.
So if you want to save some bucks, and move your butt off the couch every now and then ;), this works also.

You might want to save yourself some money and try the new Monoprice 4x1 switcher.
It works great for me and it is only $50msp

Does anyone here have any personal experience with the 4x2 HDMI switcher from Purelink?
It allows you to use two displays at the same time. It also strips off the improved audio formats from the HDMI connections, to feed to your non-HDMI equipped surrround receiver, which seems like a very good idea.

That's what I'm looking at to share a DVD player, Wii, and HD cable. Have you noticed any picture degradation at all using this? It sounds great and the price is right, but as the main, lengthy thread shows, you can drops hundreds of dollars on these if you want.
I don't want. :)

I had the same issue as the OP. I want to share my HDDVD between two display devices (not viewing at the same time). I hooked up the HDMI mechanical switcher (2 source 1 display is what it is intended for) in reverse hoping it would work and it did NOT. I hooked it up 'correctly with the same cables and it worked fine.
I'm still looking for an affordable ( read cheap) switcher to feed 1 of 2 displays. I've already tried the switch box( as mentioned) and a splitter cable.

I got the Octava 3X2 switch today. I, like the OP, wanted to switch a source ( my HD-DVD player) between display devices like a projector and TV, but not watch both at the time. I've hooked it up and it seems to do the trick. I've not tested at 1080p, but 720p ( both TV and projector) seem to work very well.
I still wish there had been a simple mechanical display switch instead of spending ~$220, having one more thing to program into my remote and one more wall wart for the equipment rack.
