View Full Version : HD70 and screen size?

I'm considering getting an HD70. I've got three potential screens. One is 100" diagonal manual pull down. One is an inflatable 10'8" x 6' screen. Lastly may be a homemade 16'x9' screen set up in my yard.

Now I know the HD70 should do fine in a dark room on a 100" screen. I suspect it'll do OK outside after dark on that 10' screen. I know it won't have the lumens to project 16'.

What I'd like to know is if anyone is using one with a 10' screen or nearly that size? HD70 bright enough? How far back from the screen?

Thanks

I have had 162"-120" and now 100" I have moved my projector 7 times.

I much prefer the 100" size- it is brighter and the screen door is smaller.

Bigger is not always better

sure it will work...it just won't look as good as it would around 100"......the wow effect would be less and it will be dim....you would also need brightmode on and you might want to jack up the brilliant color. it will still look good on a dark night. the brightness drops off fast once you go over 100" I notice a difference my 108" screen just with the zoom at each end of the spectrum. Its still plenty bright though.
but for reference even at 108" my hd70 is in low power mode and brilliant color at 3 and its still twice as bright as my x1 was with a new bulb on a 94" screen so it really depends on what your used to and the gain of the screen.

Is there a reason you are thinking of the HD70 and will you be using it for only outside?

Best price for 720p projection that I could find. Well reviewed. Outside only maybe two or three nights a year on the 10' screen, and inside in a home theater room the rest of the year. Moving up to the 16' screen only if there is a great demand from the neighborhood and I have the time to make that screen. I already own an inflatable outdoor screen and a pull down 100" screen.

He's probably wondering why your not considering the HD1000u....its cheaper and is a bit brighter and appears to be favored by more here on this forum....

Might be a split hair better but not cheaper.

A couple times a year outside I think my major concern would be what projector I want for inside use then and just make do with what it can do outdoors.

The big question outdoors is how much light you will have. If its out in the country on a moonless night you could go huge. But I’m guessing it’s a neighborhood setting with some lights on for guests etc. Personally for me outdoors I would rather the picture be smaller and bright.

If you have the blowup screen already just move the projector back and overshoot it outside and find how big you can go.

I’m a light cannon person and I’m looking for max lumens and then deal with them indoors with the screen. so I would pick the projector that had the highest lumens in bright mode with all the iris turned off etc in the line up of the budget 720p machines.

Keeping in mind the manf. Ratings are not always correct. Go with the tested or reported lumens.
