View Full Version : HDMI picture worse than component.
meccaho 06-04-07, 01:49 PM Sorry if this is the wrong forum.
Anyway, i have a samsung 56" dlp. 1 year old.
Ever since we bought it the hdmi picture has been a little worse than the component video picture. It's mainly the colors. I set both input color options to exactly the same and the colors just seem washed out.
I've tested this with both a directv hd box that has both hdmi and component as well as a dvd player that has both hdmi and component. On both the directv box and dvd player the component picture colors were much more vibrant. I also tested this with 2 different hdmi cables, one generic and one was a $150 monster hdmi cable. Both results the same.
Now from my understanding the hdmi signal should beat the component. Why is it not. Would this be a problem with my tv's hdmi input? And is there anyway to find out why this is happening and if it can be fixed?
thanks
Have you calibrated the hdmi and/or component inputs using AVIA, DVE, VE, GETGRAY or equivalent? The settings can be different for each input, so you have to calibrate each for best image.

That is not a correct understanding, widely held as it may be. Simply not so.
And anyway going on what Jeff said, you need to calibrate each input individually and compare that way. Use whichever is most accurate.

Care to elaborate?

Theoretically speaking, they are both fully capable of transmitting the same kinds of signals, resolutions, etc. (in fact, if we said DVI instead of HDMI, analog might have distinct advantages because 8-bit RGB via DVI is actually a bottleneck if you need to to any processing before transmisison, while analog can be any bitdepth).
In reality, we often find that in implementation, one or the other are superior, but ideally there should be no difference at all.
Where there is a difference, it is not always in favor of digital transmission either, many digital ins/outs will clip, some are noisy, etc.
I am comfortable with characterizing digital transmission as being generally more likely to be better if there are weaknesses and differences, but it certainly is not in all cases, and in many cases they are the same.
renocasino 06-07-07, 08:05 AM GREENO ......Can you explain to me how you calibrated the hdmi and/or component inputs using AVIA, DVE, VE GETGRAY
Do I need to buy something ....or is it on the plasma
Iam not very tech minded
Iam buying the new samsung plasma next week the ...Q9 42"
Iam going to be spending a lot of money on this HDMI cable .
Getting the top of the range like $370 for 2m.
hope I don't have problems like .... MECCAHO
BY the way Iam from AUSTRALIA
davehancock 06-07-07, 02:41 PM I set both input color options to exactly the same and the colors just seem washed out. That's the problem - you should not expect the user settings to be the same for both. As Greeno pointed out, get a "set-up" DVD and adjust the user controls per the DVD.

Getting the top of the range like $370 for 2m.Don't - the price of the HDMI cable will make absolutely no difference! In the states, Monoprice cables at $6 are just as good as famous premium brands at $100.
For 2m HDMI you definately don't need to spend anything beyond a bog standard cable. This is a digital format - the cable will either work or it won't - you do not get a better picture the more you spend... For much longer runs there is some benefit to buying more expensive cables, but the same theory remains - they either work or they don't.

To calibrate the connection (hdmi or component), you play the calibration DVD using one of the connections. calibrate it as per the directions on the DVD, i.e. brightness, contrast, color and tint. See other threads in this forum for details.
Best,

CT_Wiebe 06-10-07, 03:28 AM And calibration DVDs (both SD and HD versions) are available from on-line vendors (like Amazon and others). They are only very rarely available in local stores. The advantages and disadvantages of each version is detailed in many of the posts in this forum.
I would repeat the emphasis - don't buy expensive HDMI cables. They are a rip-off and won't give you any better picture quality. There is a difference between "cheap" and "inexpensive" cables. Check the AVS Alliance Members links at the top of each AVS Forum page, for places to get reasonably priced cables.
Just bought a 6' HDMI cable from Monoprice ($16!) and I can't believe the quality of its construction. Outstanding!

Hi Chris,
How does VGA connection compare to HDMI and component connections?
